Brewery news USA, MN: Little Thistle Brewing Co coming to Rochester soon
Dawn and Steve Finnie aren’t like most people currently opening a brewery. That’s because Little Thistle Brewing Co., soon to open in Rochester, Minnesota, isn’t their first, The Growler reported on August 18.

Following the elation of opening Grand Rounds Brewpub in 2015, Steve, co-owner, managing partner, and head brewer, and his wife Dawn, who lent a hand with the brewpub’s social media, recipe development, education, and quality control, quickly hit the nadir of their venture in craft beer when they made the difficult decision to walk away from a souring business relationship.

Now, a year into the planning and construction of Little Thistle Brewing Co., the couple is ready to jump back into the game, for better or worse.

It’s the beginning of August when we visit, and the Finnies are well on their way to realizing their dream brewery. A Scotch ale made with Bairds Malt, from near Steve’s hometown in Scotland, is ready to be served. A hazy IPA was brewed earlier in the day with help from Steve’s former brewing partner from Grand Rounds, Adam Fredericksen (who is currently in the process of opening his own brewery in Rochester, the Thesis Brewing Project).

Even with the milestones, the journey’s been ...More info on site

Brewery news Canada & USA: Vancouver’s Red Truck Beer Company opens second location in Colorado
Vancouver’s Red Truck Beer Company has travelled south to open a second location in Fort Collins, Colorado, Straight.com reported on August 20.

The brewery and “truck stop” pours 18 beers from the B.C.–born suds maker, including its flagship lager, amber ale, and northwest IPA, as well as rotating seasonal varieties and Fort Collins–specific taps. Tours, tastings, growler fills, and diner eats are all on the menu.

Like the Vancouver outpost, the venue also features an industrial look, a collection of vintage red trucks, and a water tower emblazoned with the words Red Truck. Guests can also expect to find live music and community events, like Red Truck’s Truck Stop Concert Series, on the docket.

Since launching in North Vancouver in 2005, Red Truck has set its sights on U.S. distribution. Rather than simply delivering its beer to stores, pubs, and restaurants across the border, however, the brewery decided to go the unconventional route of opening a production establishment and tasting room in Fort Collins, a city known for its flourishing beer culture.

“From our first visit, we could see that Fort Collins was a hub for first-class brewing,” Jim Dodds, general manager at Red Truck Beer, said in a news release. “We wanted to ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, WA: Fair Isle Brewing aims at summer 2019 opening in Ballard
Forthcoming farmhouse brewery Fair Isle Brewing, a project of two former homebrewers, has signed a lease on a space in Ballard, the Eater Seattle reported on August 20.

When it opens in the summer of 2019, Fair Isle will serve a “large range of mixed culture farmhouse and wild beers, including Saison, Grisette, Biere de Garde, ‘Farmhouse’, and American Sour beer.”

The project was originally announced back in 2016, with initial plans to open this year. Fair Isle has an equity partner in respected Austin, Texas brewery Jester King, which also specializes in farmhouse-style beers.

Fair Isle co-founders Andrew Pogue and Geoffrey Barker plan to make beers that “will include locally foraged items such as fireweed, elderberries, mushrooms etc and many will also be refermented on fruit. We also plan to have a coolship and produce true spontaneously fermented ‘wild’ beers.”

The brewery hasn’t published an address yet, but promises to share that detail along with renderings of the space via Facebook next month.

Brewery news USA, TN: Jackalope Brewing Company to launch its new Wedgewood-Houston brewery and taproom on August 25
One of Nashville’s favorite breweries is ready to welcome visitors into its new Wedgewood-Houston brewery and taproom, The Tennessean reported on August 22.

Jackalope Brewing Company will debut the new facility, which is nicknamed “the Ranch,” at 429B Houston St. from 12 p.m. to 10 p.m. on Aug. 25.

“We are so excited for all of our hard work to come to fruition,” Jackalope founder Bailey Spaulding said in a statement. “This brewery is a representation of where we are now - we’ve grown so much, not only in volume but also creatively. We’ve had a lot of fun in the past seven years, and I think the Ranch will really showcase that.”

The original Jackalope outpost at 701 8th Ave. S. will remain open and will be used to create small-batch, specialty brews. Bailey opened the flagship in 2011 and the company is now producing about seven times as much beer as its first year in operation.

Jackalope’s expansion to Wedgewood-Houston comes as no surprise for the thriving Nashville brewery. Spaulding said the team worked on development plans for almost a year, based on the need to produce more beer than is possible at the 8th Avenue South facility.

Brewery news USA, OH: Fat Head's Brewery opens its doors to the public
Fat Head's Brewery - all 75,000 square feet of its cavernous space in view of Interstate 71 - is open for business in Middleburgh Heights, Cleveland.com reported on August 20.

The owners of the massive beer production-brewpub-kitchen-gift shop held a ceremonial ribbon-cutting with dignitaries, friends, family and beer-thirsty patrons on Monday, Aug. 20. As soon as the ribbon was sliced the doors opened and the taps began flowing.

"It's a hell of an accomplishment," said Matt Cole, about an hour before he lined up with founder Glenn Benigni and others for the ceremony. "We still have a long way to go."

Cole was referring to fine-tuning a few beers, but in reality it is a big deal - for the brewing community, for economic development in Middleburg Heights, and for tourism in Northeast Ohio.

Middleburg Heights Mayor Gary Starr, Cuyahoga County Executive Armond Budish and Ohio Rep. Martin J. Sweeney were among those who attended the opening on August 20.

Starr credited the "dynamic experience" Fat Head's brings to Middleburg Heights along with job creation. Budish echoed his sentiments.

"I don't know much about beer - I don't drink - but I do know about jobs," he said, stressing Fat Head's is "more than just a ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, NY: Victor's VB Brewery gets new name: Twin Elder Brewery
Victor's first brewery got new owners earlier this year, and now it has a new name: Twin Elder Brewery, the Democrat & Chronicle reported on August 22.

After buying Victor's VB Brewery in February, Chris Thomas and Chase Lowrey worked to update and upgrade the nearly 5-year-old brewery.

"The new name is more marketable, but it’s also more of a reflection of us," Thomas said. "We wanted to personalize it. We wanted something with meaning behind it. It stands for who we are and what the old place was. We’re just trying to take the old place and make it a little bit better."

Thomas and Lowrey bought the nano-brewery from brewery founders Tom and Cath Bullinger. (Tom Bullinger was a co-founder of Fairport Brewing.)

The farm brewery opened in early 2014 in a space on Route 96 just outside of the village of Victor and moved to its current village location at 160 School St. in June 2015. It features a 1.5-barrel brewing system and 18 rotating taps. The brewery is just a few blocks from Stumblin' Monkey Brewing, 61 School St.

For such a small place and with such a small brewing system, brewer Keith Sillman produces a ton of different beers across ...More info on site

Brewery news Canada, ON: Black Creek Historic Brewery to shut down production for the rest of this year
Black Creek Historic Brewery has announced that due to the departure of brewmaster Ed Koren, production at the brewery at Black Creek Pioneer Village will be shutting down for the rest of this year, Canadian Beer News reported on August 20.

More details have been provided via a blog post:

“Since we are dedicated to quality control and serving you the best beer possible, we are going to be switching gears a little bit. Brewing with the historic method using historic equipment by hand can be complex, and adequate time and understanding is needed for a brewmaster to begin brewing the excellent historic beers we pride ourselves on serving and selling. Because of this, we will be halting brewery production on site for the remainder of 2018. We still have some growlers in stock, likely until the beginning of September.”

The post also notes that while on-site beer production will be halted, the brewery will remain open for guided tours, and will offer tastings of the commercial versions of Rifleman’s Ration Brown Ale and Canadian Frontier Best Bitter which will continue to be brewed at All or Nothing Brewhouse in Oakville.

Updated plans for the on-site Black Creek brewery will be announced in 2019.

Brewery news Malaysia: Carlsberg Brewery Malaysia warns of consequences of sales and service tax implementation
Carlsberg Brewery Malaysia Bhd is expecting the implementation of the sales and service tax (SST) on Sept 1 to impact consumer spending on beer negatively, The Star Online reported on August 17.

Speaking after the group’s results briefing for the first half of financial year 2018 (1H18) on August 16, Carlsberg Malaysia managing director Lars Lehmann said the group was urging the Royal Malaysian Customs to further intensify its efforts to fight contraband beer, following the abolition of the goods and services tax and the reintroduction of the SST.

“Contraband beer consumption still makes up 22% to 25% of the market, with the bulk of it occurring in Sabah and Sarawak and impacting government tax revenue. “There will be an impact from the implementation of the SST, although the size of the impact would depend on how the sales tax is applied,” he said.

Lehmann explained that the previous services tax threshold for food and beverage outlets was at an annual revenue of RM3mil and the expected threshold is RM1mil.

“If the sales tax is at 10% with a lower revenue threshold for distributors, there will be some impact to consumer spending,” he said.Carlsberg Malaysia is hopeful that the government will not impose any ...More info on site

Brewery news Croatia: Craft beer accounts for 1.5% of Croatia’s beer market
There are about 40 craft breweries in Croatia, with a market share of about 1.5%, the Total Croatia News reported on August 21.

The brewing industry in Croatia, directly and indirectly, employs around 28,000 people.

There are six major industrial breweries in the country, but there is also a growing trend of small craft breweries. New products raise the image and value of the overall sector, which strengthens the potential of small and medium-size enterprises and ultimately results in rising employment trends in the food industry.

According to the Croatian Chamber of Commerce (HGK), Croatia is at the 20th position in the EU by beer consumption. When foreign tourists’ “contribution” is taken into account, it reaches the eighth position. Although Croatia is not usually perceived as a traditional beer country, the data of the HGK’s Brewery Association show that Croatians increasingly appreciate higher-quality beers.

With an annual production of 3.4 mln hl of beer, Croatia is ranked 22nd in the European Union. However, according to the HGK’s analysts, the total annual consumption of beer in the country, including consumption by foreign tourists, is about 80 litres per capita, and Croatia is therefore at the eighth position in the EU. Without tourists, the beer ...More info on site

Barley news UK: UK winter barley acreage down more than 6% this year
The acreage of English winter barley was down more than six per cent this year, according to government statistics, FarmingUK reported on August 21.

Provisional arable crop figures released by Defra showed that the area of winter barley in England fell by 6.2 per cent between 2017 and 2018, although the department said yields were holding up well.

It said yield reports were "variable, particularly across regions, but early indications suggest winter barley yields are above the five-year average."

ADAS, in a report for AHDB Cereals & Oilseeds, reported both yield and quality were holding up.

"The current GB yield estimate for winter barley is 6.8-7.0t/ha (adjusted to 14.5% moisture), which is in line with the GB five year average of 6.9t/ha," said ADAS in its third harvest report, with the harvest of winter barley 99 per cent complete.

"The majority of malting varieties are meeting specification, and quality overall is good."

The Defra figures are the first results from the 2018 June Survey of Agriculture and Horticulture. Provisional estimates are included for the main cereal and oilseed areas on commercial holdings on June 1, 2018.

The ADAS report is from the week ending August 7. It uses data supplied by regional reporters - mostly independent agronomists. ...More info on site

Brewery news Antigua and Barbuda: BREWTECH Antigua Limited expected to return to Antigua and Barbuda next year
Antiguans and Barbudans will, if all goes according to plan, have significant stake in BREWTECH Antigua Limited which is expected to return to the country and start operations next year, the Antigua Observer reported on August 22.

Jobst Meier Zu Biesen, managing director of BREWTECH Antigua Limited, told OBSERVER on August 21 the aim is for the brewery to be owned primarily by Antiguans.

“It is an Antiguan company and our aim is to have majority Antiguan shareholders so that it could be called truly Antiguan. One reason is for marketing purposes and secondly it is about the benefit of the country. If it is an Antiguan country the dividends plus everything else stays in the country,” Biesen said.

He added that if the company was owned fully by a foreign investor then all the profits and other benefits would be for the investor himself. However, he stated that, the management of the brewery will be based entirely on the shareholder status.

The Germany-based brewer, will assume responsibility for the setting up and management of the new brewery plant at Crabbs Peninsula in the interim stage. He said that all the engineering has been taken care of and he will also be responsible for ...More info on site

Brewery news Vietnam: Little and no alcohol content beers gaining popularity
Vietnam imbibes more beer than any other country in Southeast Asia, but increased health awareness is creating a market for alternative brews with little or no alcohol content, the Nikkei Asian Review reported on August 17.

Saigon Binh Tay Beer, a Ho Chi Minh City brewery known as Sabibeco, intends to quintuple production of its Sagota brand of low-alcohol beer in the coming years.

The beer has an alcohol content of less than 0.5% and goes for 15,000 dong (65 cents) per 330-milliliter can. It did not sell well when it was released in 2014, but it has picked up a following, especially among women and younger drinkers. So the affiliate of Saigon Beer Alcohol Beverage Corp., or Sabeco, is aiming for annual output of 1 billion litres by 2025.

Imports of non-alcoholic beer from Germany and Japan are also increasing. At a Fivimart supermarket in central Hanoi, German brand Oettinger's alcohol-free beer has prime placement. A 500 ml can costs 33,000 dong, around 10% more than typical imported brews.

Other non-alcoholic beers, such as Asahi Breweries' Dry Zero and Baltika from Russia, are available at Vietnamese supermarkets and online stores.

Vietnam consumed 4.1 billion litres of beer in 2016, the ninth-most worldwide, according to ...More info on site

Barley news UK: Spring barley quality reported to be better than expected so far
So far spring barley yields in the UK have varied drastically with the average yield at this point estimated at 5.1-5.5t/ha, this is slightly below the five year average yield of 5.8t/ha, AHDB reported on August 17.

Around 35% of the GB spring barley area has now been harvested, as at 14 August, slightly behind 2014 but ahead of other harvests in the last five years. Reports so far suggest that quality is better than expected given the difficult conditions this year. Due to the split in planting windows this year crops vary greatly in their maturity which may lead to swings in yield and quality information as harvest progresses.

Overall, 75% of the total GB cereal and oilseed crop area has now been harvested according to the latest GB harvest report for the week ending 14/08/18. This remains at least a week ahead of progress in the previous five years despite heavy showers and continual rainfall halting progress in most regions from 09/08/18 onwards.

The winter barley and OSR harvest has now drawn to a close for the most part, with only 7% of the OSR crop left unharvested in Scotland. The winter wheat harvest is now 80% complete and any ...More info on site

Brewery news Hungary: Craft beer production set to rise by up to 30% this year
Output of Hungarian craft breweries is set to climb by as much as 20-30% this year, Ádám Dudok, the head of the countryʼs Craft Beer Association, was cited as saying by business daily Világgazdaság on August 15.

Based on the 100,000 hectolitres produced last year by craft breweries in Hungary, compared to the 6.2 million hectolitres produced by major breweries, small brewers account for only around 1.5% of total beer output in Hungary. Last yearʼs craft beer output was already double that of 2016, however, and Dudok believes its share could rise to 4-5% within six to eight years.

Dudok, who is also managing director of craft brewer Horizont, told the paper that small breweries need to expand their capacity and invest in product and technology developments. Exports offer another growth opportunity, he noted, adding that a number of Hungarian craft brewers already generate 8-10% of their revenues from exports.

Dániel Kurucz, co-organizer of a major beer festival in Budapest and owner of First Craft Beer Co. in the capital, puts start-up costs for a small craft brewery at HUF 40-50 mln. While this is enough for capacity to supply a few pubs, adding a bottling line raises costs to at least HUF ...More info on site

Barley news Ukraine: Barley and wheat harvest completed in Ukraine
According to the Agrarian Policy Ministry of Ukraine, the harvest of early cereals and pulses was 99% complete as of August 20, UkrAgroConsult reported on August 21.

Wheat and barley had been gathered from 99.6% and 99.2% of their projected harvest areas, respectively.

Wheat yield is down 9% from last year, while that of barley is 12% lower than in 2017.

Barley news Ukraine & Saudi Arabia: Ukraine’s barley exports to Saudi Arabia up 55% in July
Ukraine's barley exports to Saudi Arabia jumped by 55 percent in July from a year earlier to 464,000 tonnes thanks to a decrease in barley production by the main producing countries, analyst APK-Inform said on August 17.

"This growth is associated with a decrease in barley production this year in key exporting countries - Australia, Canada and Russia," it said in a statement.

The consultancy said that Ukraine's exportable surplus of barley remained practically at the previous season's level of 4.1 million tonnes.

Ukraine harvested 7.1 million tonnes of barley from 95 percent of the sown area as of Aug. 13.

APK-Inform also said that a diplomatic dispute between Saudi Arabia and Canada that was affecting their trade relations could enable Ukraine to increase shipments to Saudi Arabia.

Ukraine exported a total of 4.28 million tonnes of barley in the 2017/18 July-June season, including 1.9 million tonnes to Saudi Arabia.
