Scientific Digest

We know many of the factors that have an impact on dry hopping and the resulting flavour, however, a German research team looked further into the role of the dry hopped medium in dry hop flavour development. They were able to show an increase for almost all measured hop components with the increase of ethanol addition, combining as dipol hydrophilic and lipophilic properties. They found that the octanol-water partition coefficient value (log p) of a hop oil component is a key attribute for the transfer rate from hop pellets into beer and the resulting concentration of several compounds in dryhopped beer - though biotransformation reactions might still change the picture.

Brewery news Nigeria: AB InBev close to opening $250 mln brewery in Nigeria
AB InBev is expecting its new $250 million brewery in Nigeria to start production in the middle of this year, according to its head of Africa operations Ricardo Tadeu.

Although the facility’s production capacity is yet to be revealed, the business has a strategy to continue its growth in Africa with a development of its major brands such as Budweiser and Becks, Plastics in Packaging reported on May 4.

“For the long term, in five to ten years, Africa will be an important growth driver for the global company,” Tadeu told Reuters. “We have a clear strategy to keep a good level of growth in Africa based on developing our brands in different segments of the market.”

The $250 mln investment includes the merger of its three subsidiaries in Nigeria – International Breweries, Pabod Breweries and Intafact Breweries – with the resulting business to be known as International Breweries.

Before the AB InBev deal, SABMiller was the third largest brewer in Nigeria after Heineken’s Nigerian Breweries and Diageo’s Guinness Nigeria.

Nigeria is the most populated country in Africa with 43 per cent under the age of 14. Financial analysts predict that the GDP will grow by just over 2 per cent 2018, with this largely ...More info on site

Brewery news USA: AB InBev launching lager inspired by George Washington’s handwritten recipe
Budweiser went to the history books for its latest lager, USA Today reported on May 2.

A new beer the massive brewer is rolling out this month, Freedom Reserve Red Lager, is inspired by a handwritten recipe found in George Washington’s military journal kept during the French and Indian War in 1757.

Meant to celebrate U.S. veterans and American history, the red lager is made by Budweiser brewers who are also "proud veterans," the company says. Proceeds benefit Folds of Honor, a non-profit group that provides educational scholarships to military families.

This is the latest marketing move by Budweiser to tap into historical notes for its beers. Two years ago, Budweiser was available in packaging labeled "America" on cans and bottles. And in October 2017, the brewery released its first Reserve Collection beer, 1933 Repeal Reserve Amber Lager, which celebrated the end of Prohibition.

This second Reserve Collection beer, Freedom Reserve Red Lager, was described by Washington as a "small beer" in his journal, which is online in the Digital Public Library of America.

A small beer, which typically was of lower quality and lower alcohol, would have been ideal for brewing by soldiers, the library entry notes. Washington enjoyed beer and brewed stronger, better ...More info on site

Brewery news UK: C&C signs exclusive distribution agreement for Tsingtao beer
Cider producer the C&C Group has signed an agreement with Tsingtao Brewery to be the exclusive distributor of the Chinese beer in the UK and Ireland, The Drinks Business reported on May 3.

The deal will see the producer of Magners and Bulmers become the sole distributor of one of China’s biggest beer brands from 1 July 2018.

Stephen Glancey, group CEO at C&C Group, commented: “This distribution agreement is consistent with our strategy to build an international premium brand portfolio that complements our national and local heritage brands. Tsingtao is a brand with a rich history and has become the UK’s number one Chinese beer.

“We are excited about this partnership, the opportunity to broaden Tsingtao’s presence and to introduce this quality beer to discerning consumers across the UK and Ireland”.

Ning Ma, Tsingtao’s general manager, International added: “We are thrilled to leverage C&C’s distribution strength, innovative marketing, and strong ties with millennial consumers, to usher in a new era of growth for Tsingtao in the UK and Ireland.”

Brewery news Zimbabwe: Scarcity of foreign currency threatens Delta Corporation’s business
Delta Corporation says the viability of its Shumba Maheu business unit with a monthly turnover of over US$1 million is being threatened by the scarcity of foreign currency required to import packaging material, the Zimbabwe Independent reported on May 4.

The brewer established the Shumba Maheu business unit in 2015 as part of the beverages manufacturer’s plans to diversify.

Before local production of the Shumba Maheu product brands, Delta used to import the starch-based non-carbonated and alcohol-free beverage from an associate company in Zambia.

The southern African country is currently crippled by a debilitating foreign currency shortage that has hampered manufacturers from importing key raw materials required to sustain operations.

Delta company secretary Alex Makamure told businessdigest that the acute shortage of foreign currency—which has also impacted severely the operations of the brewer—was struggling to source packaging material from South African-based firm Nampak.

Shumba Maheu sources the bulk of its packaging material from Nampak.

Some of the core raw materials imported by Delta required to sustain operations at Shumba Maheu include flavouring and milk bases.

“Our businesses rely on both direct and indirect imports. For Maheu, packaging is supplied by locals but has high import content.

“We import some flavours, spares and milk bases for Supersip. These are less ...More info on site
