Brewery news USA: Big brewers struggling to tap into shifting consumer trends
Once the undisputed kings of beer in the US, AB InBev and MillerCoors are struggling to curtail a multi-year slump in sales of their top brands and re-energize brews that have failed to keep pace with changing consumer tastes and trends, Food Dive reported on April 26.

"If you could go back in a time machine you would say, 'Shoot, I wish back then that we had started to follow those trends that were growing,' ...but we recognize it now and we're fixing it," Greg Butler, vice president of Miller Brands at MillerCoors, told Food Dive. "We held on to the equation for too long."

The major beer producers are facing threats on several fronts as Americans move away from domestic lagers in favor of Mexican imports, craft beers and wine and spirits. A growing number of consumers are also turning to low-calorie and no- or low-alcohol brews as part of a broader health and wellness trend sweeping the food and beverage industry.

Despite a host of new products tied to these preferences and trends, the big players in U.S. beer continue to struggle to curtail slumping sales and stem the loss in market share. Total beer shipments declined 1.3% in 2017, ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, OH: Lock 15 Brewing Co. plans to open in Akron this summer
A strong sense of history is fuelling Lock 15 Brewing Co., which plans to open in Akron this summer, Cleveland.com reported on April 25.

The brewery, in the shadow of the Y Bridge, is in the Cascade Valley Metro Park. It's a mix of old, new and nature: Trails wind through the area and its montage of historic buildings, rushing water and electrical towers. Soon, Colin Cook's vision and restaurant background, Tony Troppe's development acumen and Joe Karpinski's brewing know-how will converge to open one of Akron's newest breweries.

Not that long ago, "The area was a complete utter disaster. Nothing was in the park area, no signs of life," Cook said.

He said revitalization of the area where Lock 15 Brewing is located - not far from the main drag of West Market Street - really began years ago. The Cascade Locks Park Association was incorporated in 1989. Subsequent preservation efforts started to breathe life into the area. One of Akron's oldest buildings, the Mustill Store, was transformed into a museum. A walking bridge now connects the store to the Cascade Lofts building on North Street, where the brewery is located.

"These cascade locks saw 50 to 75 boats a day," Cook said. ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, IL: Knox County Brewing to be launched by husband and wife in Galesburg this summer
Later this summer, Matthew Hansen and his wife Sarah Hansen, a Knox College admissions counselor, will be opening a new craft brewery in Galesburg. The brewery, Knox County Brewing Company, will be located in the Sustainable Business Center on Main Street, The Knox Student reported on April 25.

After moving to Knoxville from Austin, TX 18 months ago to take a sabbatical from the world of nonprofit startups, the couple hopes to bring the new craft brewing company to the community. Aware of the economic situation in Illinois, they began studying what the nonprofit world is doing and what they are prevented from doing due to the financial situation.

“Because we are entrepreneurs, we began to ask the question: what would a social economic community localized in a place like this through the nonprofit world look like?” Matthew said. “We came to the conclusion [to open a brewery] not so much by saying we want to be brewers. We came to the conclusion by asking what way can we forward the very thrust that has been a part of our lives since the beginning. In other words, how can we be major players in community economic and social development?”

According to Hansen, a ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, OR: Ordnance Brewing brewer departs to open own brewpub
After four years of service, Logan Mayfield departed Ordnance Brewing earlier this week with plans of opening a local brewpub, close by in Boardman, OR, Brewbound reported on April 25.

Although Logan will be missed, he leaves behind a solid brewery team led by Paul Anderson (formerly of Deschutes Brewing). The transition has been in process for the last several months but Logan’s departure was finalized on Tuesday the 24th of April.

Ordnance’s management team, led by Craig Coleman, hope that Logan is successful in his new venture and are equally excited to have such a good neighbor close by. “We are pleased that Logan has the opportunity to pursue his dream,” said Coleman about Logan’s new venture.

Logan will be starting up Burnt Field Brewing less than a mile away in Boardman’s historic train depot. “We’ll start with a pizzeria, and contract brew, as well as carry some of Ordnance’s delicious beers. But eventually, we’ll be brewing all of our beer in-house.” commented Mayfield. Logan hopes to have the pizzeria side open early summer.

Brewery news Canada, ON: Contract brewing Equals Brewing Company to open next month in London
The London Free Press reports that a large brewing facility exclusively dedicated to contract brewing will be opening next month on Sovereign Road in London, Ontario.

As originally reported late last year, Equals Brewing Company is being established by Southwest Sun Group, a private investment partnership with nearly three decades of experience in various ventures, all of which were divested in order to concentrate on this new project.

The C$10-million brewing operation is currently in the final stages of construction, and is expected to be producing test batches by May 14th, with full-scale operations to launch soon afterwards.

Brian Semkowski, one of the partners in the business, tells the paper that Equals already has contracts in place to brew 10 beers, including 3 for Toronto-based companies, and 7 for local companies including Toboggan Brewing.

Brewing will be overseen by Justin McKellar, a former Labatt Breweries employee, with client breweries welcome to have their own brewers on hand to be involved in production.

Brewery news USA, MN: Lift Bridge Brewing Company to build larger production facility in Stillwater
Lift Bridge Brewing Company, Stillwater’s first craft brewery since Prohibition, announced April 25 that it has purchased 5.5 acres of property in Stillwater to build a much larger production and distribution facility. The new facility will allow the growing business to keep up with demand for its flagship beers and continue to add to its repertoire of new brews. Construction on the first phase of the new location will begin this August to kick off the brewery’s 10-year anniversary celebrations, ECM Publishers reported.

The new Lift Bridge brewery will be located less than a quarter-mile north of the current location, at the southeast corner of Orleans St. W. and Washington Ave., and will feature a taproom, patio and outdoor space.

“When selecting our future location, it was very important to everyone that the brewery remain in Stillwater,” said co-founder and vice president, Brad Glynn. “As we continue to expand into new markets across the Midwest, this will ensure that we are remaining true to our roots and our community by brewing and distributing everything from Stillwater.”

The new taproom will be double the size of the current taproom, but will keep the same feel, Glynn said.

“We want the taproom to be a comfortable ...More info on site

Brewery news Canada, BC: Trench Brewing officially opens its doors to public
The Prince George Citizen reports that after more than a year of planning and construction, Trench Brewing has officially opened its doors to the public.

Founded by couples Craig & Esther Schwenning and Bailey & Jesse Hoefels, Trench has been in soft launch mode since earlier this month, and officially opened last weekend, offering glasses and growlers of several beers including Fang IPA (6% abv, 45 IBU), Viking Amber Ale (5.5% abv, 25 IBU), and 6 Mile Stout (6% abv, 40 IBU). Trench beers are also on tap at several bars and restaurants in Prince George.

As indicated by the full name of the company – Trench Brewing & Distilling – there are plans to distill vodka and gin in the future, with production expect to start this summer.

Trench Brewing is located at 399 2nd Avenue in Prince George.

Brewery news USA, MS: Crooked Letter Brewing moves into new home in Ocean Springs
The Mississippi Gulf Coast's Crooked Letter Brewing Co. has moved into a new home in downtown Ocean Springs, a Mississippi newspaper reports.

The Sun Herald reported April 17 that the new location for the brewpub will move the brewery to a more visible location and take advantage of the downtown nightlife.

Crooked Letter first opened in another location in Ocean Springs in 2012. Mississippi's Gulf Coast is home to several other microbreweries, including Biloxi Brewing Co., Chandeleur Island Brewing Co. in Gulfport and Lazy Magnolia in Kiln.

Crooked Letter's Paul Blacksmith told the newspaper the menu focuses on dishes that will complement the company's brews. The beer will always come first, he said.

"Beer will always be the priority at our brewpub," Blacksmith told the newspaper.

Brewery news Latin America: Corona edges out Skol from the position of Latin America’s most valuable brand
Mexican beer Corona is the most valuable brand in Latin America, overtaking Brazil's Skol, which has held the title for the past two years, according to the sixth-annual BrandZ™ Top 50 Most Valuable Latin American Brands announced on April 27 by WPP with data prepared by Kantar.

Corona took the top spot in the ranking after seeing an 8% brand value growth to $8.292 billion, edging out Skol, which grew by just 1% to $8.263 bln. The brand is sold in more than 180 countries and its success and global growth have been helped by Corona's ability to generate an affiliation with the "fun-loving" attributes associated with Mexican and Latin culture.

The overall Latin America Top 10 ranking is mainly represented by beer (four brands – Corona, Skol, Brahma, and Aguila), followed by financial institutions (two brands), retail (two brands) and communications providers (one brand).

Over the years the beer segment has been dominant in this ranking, but this year, four beer brands are present in the Top 10, rather than five. In addition, brands in the financial institutions category have achieved their best positions in the Top 10 since 2012.

The four beer brands in the Top 10 this year together posted ...More info on site

Barley news EU: Spring plantings almost done in Denmark and Sweden
Spring barley plantings in Denmark and South Sweden are more or less done whereas Sweden still has about 50% to do, GrainCom said in their latest newsletter on April 27.

Plantings in UK are still not finished yet due to weather conditions and it is not unlikely that some of the spring barley area will be lost.

There was some more activity this week on both old and new crop as the current price levels seem to generate more buying interest.

Logistics in France remains a big issue with train traffic heavily hurt by the strike and high demand for trucks and barges leads to higher prices.

Brewery news Mozambique: Brewers and importers warn against imposing fiscal stamps on beer
The producers and importers of alcoholic drinks have warned that plans by the Mozambican Tax Authority (AT) to impose fiscal stamps on beer will backfire and result in less tax, not more, being collected, AllAfrica.com reported on April 27.

A ministerial diploma of 2016 made it obligatory to place fiscal stamps on tobacco products and alcoholic drinks. Since then the stamps have been introduced successfully on cigarette packets and on wines and spirits.

Putting stamps on cans and bottles of beer is much more challenging. At a Maputo press conference on April 25, the Association of Drinks Producers and Importers (ABIBA) warned that, if the measure goes ahead, taxes raised from beer could collapse from the current eight billion meticais (about 132 million US dollars) a year to five billion meticais. That would be an annual loss to the exchequer of over 49 million dollars.

The chairperson for the beers sector of ABIBA, Neyde Pires, said that adding fiscal stamps puts a heavy technical burden on beer producers.

Furthermore, the process of adding fiscal stamps is an additional cost for beer producers. That cost would be passed on to consumers, who might react by buying less beer. If less beer was sold, the breweries ...More info on site
