USA: Sales of beer at multi-outlet and convenience stores up 1.5 percent through March 25
|
Market research firm IRI Worldwide, which tracks category-wide sales trends at off-premise retailers in the US, reported on April 5 that dollar sales of beer at multi-outlet and convenience stores were up 1.5 percent through March 25.
Much of that growth is being driven by imported beer, and specifically Mexican imports, dollar sales of which were up 11.5 percent during the period.
Dollar sales of craft beer, meanwhile, were up 5.3 percent, according to the firm.
Among the five largest beer companies – Anheuser-Busch InBev, MillerCoors, Constellation Brands, Heineken USA and Boston Beer – only Constellation and Boston Beer posted positive dollar sales growth, up 14.5 percent and 14.2 percent, respectively.
Boston Beer is growing to start the year, in spite of sales of its flagship Samuel Adams flagship declining 14 percent. Sales of the company’s seasonal SKU were up 69.5 percent while sales of Twisted Tea grew 22.8 percent.
AB InBev, MillerCoors, and Heineken were down 1.2 percent, 1.6 percent, and 4.2 percent, respectively.
Among craft brewing companies, Yuengling and Sierra Nevada both grew dollar sales 5.8 percent and 3 percent, respectively.
Dollar sales for New Belgium Brewing, however, were down 4.7 percent as its flagship Fat Tire Amber Ale declined 16.8 percent.

USA: Brewers Association publishes list of 50 fastest growing craft breweries
|
The Brewers Association (BA) — the not-for-profit trade group representing small and independent craft brewers in the US — released on April 10 its inaugural list of the 50 fastest growing small and independent1 craft brewing companies of 2017.
Median growth from 2016 to 2017 for these breweries was 216 percent; the median size of breweries on the list went from 284 barrels in 2016 to 963 barrels in 2017. These companies represent 5.5 percent of craft’s growth by volume for 2017 and include eight brewpubs, 40 microbreweries and two regional craft breweries, the Association said.
The top five breweries on the list are:
1. CraftRoots Brewing Co (Milford, MA)
2. GoatHouse Brewing Co (Lincoln, CA)
3. Crowded Castle Brewing Co (Phoenixville, PA)
4. Idyll Hounds Brewing Co (Santa Rosa Beach, FL)
5. Royal Docks Brewing Co (Canton, OH)
“With 5 percent growth overall for small and independent brewers in 2017 and microbreweries and brewpubs delivering the majority of that, we wanted to spotlight some of the breweries driving that growth,” said Bart Watson, chief economist, Brewers Association. “As the growth base for craft becomes more diffuse, these fast growing brewing companies illustrate that a diverse set of success stories still exist.”
Breweries had to have opened 12/31/2015 or earlier to be considered.

USA: AB InBev launches orange flavor Bud Light beer
|
AB InBev has launched an orange flavour of its Bud Light beer in the US as it aims to profit from the popularity of flavoured lagers, FoodBev.com reported on April 9.
Released ahead of summer, the launch coincides with updated packaging for Bud Light lime.
AB InBev said that citrus flavours now account for 84% of the overall flavoured beer category in the US. Both variants incorporate real citrus peels into the brewing process.
To build consumer interest, Bud Light’s new commercials – titled ‘earth’ and ‘taste it’ – aim to highlight how both beverages are brewed with real citrus peels for perfect summertime refreshment.
The colourful new packs for Bud Light lime and Bud Light orange feature bright orange and lime details, with accents of real citrus peels.
Bud Light vice president of marketing Andy Goeler said: “Our millennial consumers are eager to try new, flavoured options in the light lager category. We wanted to create something new to engage with these consumers and bring them into the Bud Light family.

Canada: Feed barley prices bring more joy to farmers than those of malting barley
|
Canadian farmers with barley in the bin have a bit of a love-hate relationship with barley prices right now, the Alberta Express reported on April 10.
They love that feed prices are so high, but hate that malt prices are so low.
“These prices are definitely something — to have feed prices where they’re at right now, it’s definitely out of the norm,” said Rimbey-area farmer Jason Lenz.
“I think everybody is enjoying these feed prices, but we’re just hoping that there are some good pricing opportunities for this year’s malt crop coming up.”
Demand for both feed and malt are up, here and abroad — partly because of sharply lower Australian production last year. That’s shown by Canadian exports, which had topped two million tonnes as of the start of March, nearly a one-third jump from a year earlier.
But while feed supplies are stretched, there was plenty of high-quality malt grown on the Prairies last year.
As a result, old-crop feed barley prices have shot up to C$5 per bushel in some parts of the province, while old-crop malt has fetched as little as C$4.25 a bushel.
