ABOUT THE STABILITY OF BITTER COMPONENTS IN HOPS DURING STORAGE

ABSTRACT
German researchers are specialists in identifying and quantifying bitter components in hops. In this project, heat maps were developed for all bitter components during the storage of several years. The data presented gives profound insight into the molecular bitter compound variability of certain hops. Quantitative analyses of hops stored with and without the influence of oxygen revealed that the decline of distinct hop constituents cannot be explained by an increase in transformation products formed during beer aging, thus implying unknown degradation mechanisms in hops. In a controlled, cool and oxygen free environment, the relevant bitter components proved to be stable for a period of 2 years.

Brewery news Canada: ‘Ground shifting’ under beer consumption as Canadians age and women increasingly prefer cider
As Canadians age, they are drinking less beer with baby boomer women leading the decline in consumption. But cider and local craft beer can help soften some of the downturn, a recent Mintel report found.

“While beer remains far and away the most popular alcoholic beverage in Canada (accounting for 80% of alcoholic beverage consumption), the ground is shifting,” Joel Gregoire, senior food and drink analyst at Mintel, said.

“Canada’s population is aging and one of the key distinctions is that the drop off in beer consumption among seniors primarily occurs among women.”

The declining pace of beer consumption has slowed down over the past two years and Canadians reported drinking an average of six and a half fewer litres in 2016 compared to five years ago; and 35% of Canadians over the age of 55 say they do not drink beer at all, according to Mintel.

The drop-off in beer consumption does not appear to be based on any one type of beer with declines evident across lager, ales, malts, and stouts, Mintel noted.

Consumer feedback revealed that women are less likely to drink beer than men – 58% of women over the age of 65 said they did not drink beer ...More info on site

Barley news USA: Barley acres expected to decline significantly in 2017
To no one’s surprise, the US barley acres are expected to decline significantly in 2017, according to the Prospective Plantings report issued by USDA on March 31.

Nationally, growers intend to plant approximately 2.5 million acres of barley this year, which is 17 percent less than the 3 million acres seeded last year.

According to Steve Edwardson, executive director of the North Dakota Barley Council, growers in the state intend to plant 470,000 acres this spring, a decrease of 36 percent from last year’s 740,000 acres. The following table, prepared by Edwardson, shows the trends in harvested acres for the key barley producing states in the U.S.

A brief review of production history over the last two years is needed to better understand the barley marketing outlook growers are currently facing.

“In general, growers in North Dakota experienced good yields and quality in the last two crop years of 2015 and 2016. The malting and brewing industry had relatively high acceptance rates for malting barley, and consequently it will take time for the industry to process the supply, thus resulting in reductions in planted acres and production for 2017,” Edwardson said.

In 2015 and 2016, North Dakota growers produced 67.2 million and 42.88 million bushels, ...More info on site

Brewery news USA: Molson Coors’ beer sales forecast to suffer due to increasing marijuana use
Wall Street came out on April 20 with comprehensive research about the negative ramifications of rising cannabis use on alcohol consumption.

Cowen lowered its rating for Molson Coors on April 20 to market perform from outperform, saying the beer company's sales will suffer due to increasing marijuana use.

"We believe alcohol could be under pressure for the next decade, based on our data analysis covering 80 years of alcohol and 35 years of cannabis incidence in the US," analyst Vivien Azer wrote in a note to clients. "Since 1980, we have seen 3 distinct substitution cycles between alcohol and cannabis; we are entering another cycle."

The analyst noted during the three most recent cycles of alcohol consumption there was a "notable inverse correlation with cannabis use." She cited how during the 1980s and 1990s alcohol consumption fell 22 percent while marijuana use rose 18 percent.

In addition, alcohol drinking in the 18 to 25-year-old demographic has declined for five straight years through 2015 as marijuana use increased, according to Azer.

"For TAP, the emerging cannabis category could prove more problematic, given the company's exposure to mainstream beer in both the US and Canada," she wrote. "While we are confident in TAP's ability to ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, OR: Oregon brewers increase market share last year
Oregon-brewed beer dominated draft lines across the state once again in 2016, according to the Oregon Brewers Guild, which on April 19 reported that 64.9 percent of all beer served on tap came from an in-state producer. That’s up nearly 2 percent from 2015, when 63 percent of all draft beer sold in Oregon was made by an in-state brewery.

As part of its annual “By the Numbers” report, the non-profit trade association said Oregonians drank 707,000 barrels of Oregon-brewed beer in 2016, or about 23.3 percent of all beer consumed in the state. That’s up from the 650,000 barrels of Oregon-brewed beer sold to drinkers in 2015.

“Oregon is a consistent leader in the U.S. for craft beer whether it’s the number of breweries per capita, the percentage of dollars spent on craft beer, or the economic impact per capita by Oregon’s breweries,” Brian Butenschoen, the executive director of the Oregon Brewers Guild, said via a press release.

The Guild also reported a 4.8 percent increase in the amount of beer produced by Oregon breweries; in-state producers collectively cranked out more than 1.78 million barrels of beer in 2016.

As in-state production has grown, so too has direct and indirect beer industry employment, ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, NC: Charlotte’s two biggest craft brewers appear headed to court to raise their production limit
Charlotte’s two biggest craft brewers appear headed to court after a campaign to raise their production limit collapsed in the face of opposition from North Carolina’s influential beer wholesalers, the Charlotte Observer reported on April 19.

Olde Mecklenburg and NoDa breweries have spearheaded the so-called Craft Freedom fight, a bid to raise the 25,000-barrel cap on production before craft brewers must enter a distribution contract with a wholesaler.

But House Bill 500, which would have raised the cap to 200,000 barrels, was gutted on April 19, barely three weeks after it was introduced amid fanfare and support from the state’s more than 200 craft brewers.

“I’d say it’s disappointing, but disappointing doesn’t do it justice,” said John Marrino, owner of Olde Mecklenburg. “It’s outrageous. It’s backroom politics. … I’m not sure the General Assembly is the best avenue to ensure the success of the micro-brewery industry in North Carolina.”

If the 25,000-barrel cap remains in place, Marrino said he won’t be able to build a planned second brewery in Cornelius.

Todd Ford, owner of NoDa Brewery, said, “Apparently our only path to success is going to be a legal one.”

The two brewers and their advisers plan to meet Thursday with former N.C. Supreme Court Justice ...More info on site

Brewery news Canada, BC: Dedicated to contract and partner brewing, Factory Brewing to open soon in Vancouver
The first brewing facility in British Columbia exclusively dedicated to contract and partner brewing is set to open soon in Vancouver, Canadian Beer News reported on April 17.

Factory Brewing is being established by a core team that includes CEO Andrew Harris, Brewmaster Andres Palma (former Director of Brewing at Molson‘s Vancouver plant), and Head of Operations Rick Dellow (co-founder of R&B Brewing).

Brewing on a 50 hectolitre Newlands Systems brewhouse, Factory will have an annual capacity of over 60,000 hl, and offers clients a full packaging line and quality control lab.

“Unlike other contract breweries, Factory is completely collaborative,” explains Harris in a statement. “Our brewers work with our partner breweries every step of the way. We’re like their assistant brewers.”

Factory will be launching later this spring at 1575 Vernon Drive, and will initially be producing beer for 11 partner breweries, including providing additional brewing capacity for Doan’s Craft Brewing of East Vancouver.

Brewery news USA, SC: Blue Ridge Brewing Co. plans to open in downtown Greer this fall
Blue Ridge Brewing Co. is heading back downtown to the 19,000-sqaure-foot former White Horse Paper Co. at 405 Westfield St. in Greer, right on the GHS Swamp Rabbit Trail and a block from the future City Park, the Upstate Business Journal reported.

The restaurant and brewery plans to open in the fall.

After losing its North Main Street lease in 2015 after 20 years in Greenville, Blue Ridge owner Bob Hiller says they are “chomping at the bit” to reopen downtown.

The new building, which will require almost as much demolition as new construction, is owned by Rallis Holdings, also the owner of the Mohawk Drive development Blue Ridge previously signed a lease for in late 2016. Because of inadequate parking, the restaurant had to pull out of the deal.

Hiller says despite appearances, the current Trade Street location in Greer was already in the works before the Greenville location closed.

“We never left downtown. It just happened to coincide with our losing our lease,” Hiller says. “We always planned to open the second location in Greer.”

Since the Greenville Blue Ridge closed, Hiller has been on the hunt for a new space in Greenville that would allow the restaurant to expand its operations and brew ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, MN: Back Channel Brewing Collective set to open this summer on Lake Minnetonka
Back Channel Brewing Collective is set to open this summer in Spring Park on Lake Minnetonka. The brewery will be the first on the upper lake and will feature beer produced with ingredients from local maltsters and sustainable farms, Brewbound reported.

Over the last few months the crew has been transforming the former Family & Cosmetic Gentle Dentistry building at 4787 Shoreline Drive in Spring Park into a lakeside destination for beer, craft sodas, and cold press coffee on nitro using locally-roasted coffee beans. Food will be available from local restaurant partners Dakota Junction and Minnetonka Drive-In—delivered by golf cart, as well as offerings from other Spring Park, Navarre & Mound establishments. The brewery is also working with the city to allow for food trucks during special events and the drive-in’s off-season.

“We’re excited to bring quality beer and an inviting place to gather on this side of the lake,” said Josh Leddy, co-owner of the brewery and owner/operator of Life’s a Beach Shoreline Service on Lake Minnetonka. “It’s really about the community to us—we’re partnering with local businesses and vendors as much as possible to help create an experience that is second to none.”

Other owners include Melissa Langseth, Matt “Olie” Olson, ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, AZ: Tucson's Barrio Brewing Company expanding northeast to Mesa
Tucson's Barrio Brewing Company is expanding northeast to Mesa, ABC15 reported on April 18.

The brewery renovated a 3,800-square-foot space at Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport after the owners of Flight Deck Cafe decided to close and retire after 13 years in business, according to an airport spokesperson.

Even though it is at the airport, Barrio Brewing Company hopes to cater to not only travelers but airport employees and those at Arizona State University's Polytechnic Campus.

The 125-seat brewery is slated to open on April 29. It will have 12 beers on tap, six seasonal brews, and six regulars, according to a news release.

The hours will be Sunday - Thursday, 6 a.m. - 9 p.m., and Friday - Saturday, 6 a.m. - 11 p.m.

According to its website, owners Dennis and Tauna opened Barrio Brewing in 1991 in Tucson.

Brewery news USA, AK: Barnaby Brewing Company opens its doors this weekend in Juneau
Matt Barnaby has become Juneau’s newest professional brewer, five gallons at a time, the Juneau Empire reported on April 21.

Barnaby has been an avid home brewer for years, making small batches in his kitchen. After a while, he and his wife Kelly started to hatch an idea.

“I got sick of cleaning up the mess,” Kelly joked, “so I was like, ‘We’ve got to do something.’”

That “something” ended up being Barnaby Brewing Company, which opens its doors this weekend.

They started pursuing the idea in February 2016, and then signed a lease on the space on Franklin Street that used to house the Juneau Arts &Humanities Council (JAHC) in August. They then sent in their paperwork for approval in September and were awarded their federal alcohol license in March.

Ticketed events take place this weekend, but are mostly sold out. The beers will be open to the public starting at 3 p.m. Sunday, and Barnaby hopes to tap a new beer every Sunday moving forward.

Barnaby Brewing is the first of its kind in Juneau, producing craft beer in small batches. Barnaby, who grew up in South Carolina and has seen numerous breweries pop up and thrive there, is shocked that there hasn’t been ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, OH: Heavier Than Air Brewing Co. entering final stretch before opening later this spring
A new Washington Twp. brewery is entering the final stretch of construction work ahead of a projected opening later this spring, WHIO reported on April 21.

“We’re still looking at late spring or early summer,” said Chris Tarkany, co-founder of Heavier Than Air Brewing Co. in Centerville with his brother Nick. “May, optimistically. June, realistically.”

The Tarkany brothers have attended informal gatherings of founders of other Dayton-area breweries. They said the local craft brewing community has been supportive, offering advice and guidance as they navigate the obstacles that craft breweries must overcome before opening.

“Everything’s coming together,” Nick Tarkany said. “Hopefully we will be at AleFest and joining in on the Dayton Beer Week festivities as the latest addition to the Dayton brewery community.”

Heavier Than Air Brewing Co. is located at 497 Miamisburg-Centerville Road in the Normandy Square Shopping Center, east of the Dayton Mall. The two founders are getting an assist from two of Nick’s sons, Ben and Nick Jr. The idea for the brewery came from Ben.

The new brewery will have about 10 taps, will seat about 40 and will employ about five. As befitting its name, Heavier Than Air will have a aviation theme — in part because the Tarkany ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, MO: Standard Brewing Company announces closure less than two years after opening
Less than two years after opening its doors, Standard Brewing Company (12322 Dorsett Road, Maryland Heights; 314-548-2270) has announced its closure, the Riverfront Times reported on April 20.

The brewpub was founded by Jeff Harlan and Jeff "Jonesy" Jones, who'd previously opened the brew-it-yourself store J2 in Chesterfield. They renovated a former Fuddruckers in Maryland Heights and opened in September 2015, offering a half-dozen branded brews and a small pizza-based menu. Four months later, they brought in Chef Wade Waller to increase the food offerings.

In a post on its Facebook page on April 19, the company announced it would close its doors after service April 30. It did not give a reason for the closure.

Jones did not immediately respond to a request seeking comment on April 20.

Whisky news World: Pernod Ricard says sales growth slows slightly in Q3
French spirits maker Pernod Ricard said on April 20 that sales growth slowed slightly in the third quarter, reflecting weakness in India and the earlier timing of the Chinese New year.

Pernod, the world’s second-biggest spirits group after Britain’s Diageo, kept its profit outlook unchanged and achieved some robust quarterly growth in the United States and in Europe.

Pernod Ricard posted sales of 1.987 billion euros ($2.13 billion) in the three months to March 31, up 3% on a like-for-like basis, compared with 4% growth in the second quarter.

This was, however, above the average of analysts’ estimates for 1% growth in a company-compiled consensus.

The owner of Mumm champagne, Absolut vodka, Chivas Regal Scotch whisky, and Jameson Irish whiskey kept its forecast for underlying operating profit growth of between 2% and 4% in the full year to June 30.

Barley news France: Barley and soft wheat crop condition declines affected by persisting dry spell
The condition of French wheat and barley crops declined last week, marking a second successive weekly fall, farm office FranceAgriMer said on April 21, suggesting a persisting dry spell was starting to affect crops.

Warm, dry weather in the past month has raised concern about low moisture levels in France after a very dry winter.

FranceAgriMer estimated that 85 percent of soft wheat crops were in good or excellent condition as of April 17, compared with 89 a week earlier.

Winter barley was rated 78 percent good or excellent, down from 82 percent a week earlier, while spring barley was rated 85 percent good/excellent against 86 percent the prior week, it said in a weekly crop report.

For grain maize, farmers had sown 57 percent of the expected area by April 17, up from 31 percent a week earlier and well ahead of the 9 percent progress seen at the same date last year, FranceAgriMer said.

Whisky news UK: Diageo to cut more than 100 jobs in Scotland over Brexit concerns
GMB union has accused the UK government of “gross betrayal” after drinks company Diageo announced plans to cut more than 100 jobs across its Scottish operations because of concerns over Brexit, the Independent reported on April 20.

Workers and trade unions were informed in the afternoon on April 20 that 70 redundancies will be made at Diageo’s Leven plant in Fife and a further 35 redundancies at its Shieldhall site, near Glasgow.

Diageo, which owns drinks brands including Baileys, Smirnoff and Guiness, confirmed the cuts are part of a review process which will see selected white spirits production moved to the company’s Santa Vittoria plant in Italy and to plants in the US.

GMB Scotland earlier this year warned the UK government’s Scottish Secretary David Mundell about the need for special measures to protect Scotland’s drinks manufacturing sector against the backdrop of Brexit uncertainty.

“We warned David Mundell and the UK government about the possible impact of Brexit on the future of jobs across our drinks manufacturing sector and about the need for protective measures to safeguard an industry worth billions to the Scottish and UK economies,” Louise Gilmour, GMB Scotland Organiser, said.

“Instead of listening to the real concerns of working people and ...More info on site

Brewery news India: Heineken’s shareholder agreement with Vijay Mallya at odds with regulatory order
Dutch beer maker Heineken International is in a bind. Its shareholder agreement with Vijay Mallya for United Breweries Ltd entitles the Indian businessman to remain the local company's chairman for life, but a regulatory order makes him ineligible to be a director of any listed company, the Economic Times reported on April 20.

UBL has been forced to hold board meetings without a regular chairman, since the Securities and Exchange Board of India barred Mallya from the securities market as well as from holding any board or key managerial positions at companies.

The regulator's decision came after lenders declared him a "wilful defaulter".

Brewery news South Korea: Fierce competition brewing in Korea’s beer market

Two local industry leaders, Lotte Liquor and Hite Jinro, unveiled new products this week in hopes of taking on imported beers that have been gaining popularity among Korean consumers, the Korea JoongAng Daily reported on April 21.

Lotte Liquor on April 20 launched Fits Super Clear, its first beer brand since entering the market with Kloud in 2014. “Now our product portfolio comprises Kloud, positioned as a premium beer, and Fits Super Clear, which is targeted for a more general, low-cost market,” said Yang Moon-young, public relations head at Lotte Liquor.

Fits Super Clear is similar to rivals Cass and Hite, which are the preferred beers for connoisseurs of somaek. With ...More info on site
