A CLOSE UP - HOP PARTICLES IN DRY HOPPING

ABSTRACT
In dry hopping it is all about extracting the flavours from the hop particles. German researchers closely examined particle size during dry hopping, as the process of pellet disintegration of very important. Fast swelling hop pellets with small particle size distribution are seen as ideal for dry hopping. Swelling velocity was found to be both temperature and variety independent. The researchers also found that the swelling volume is higher in low alpha varieties. As sedimentation of particles happens quickly, agitation is suggested for better extraction. They also found the lower particle size distribution of pellets is beneficial in this context compared to the properties of hop powder prior to pelletization. These insights should help to make dry hopping more efficient!

Brewery news USA, WA: Washington state lawmakers may cut taxes for breweries soon
There could soon be a bigger selection of beer in Washington with the hopes of state lawmakers to cut taxes for breweries, krem.com reported on February 26.

One could say No-Li Brewhouse is a popular spot. Glasses not going empty, and taps not going dry. Spokane’s largest brewhouse however has room to grow. Owner John Bryant says a proposed tax break would help.

The Craft Beverage Modernization and Tax Reform Act would lower the federal excise tax from $7 to $3.50. Right now, Washington state craft brewers pay that $7 per barrel in an additional 4.8 per barrel in state tax.

“Really in that system, there’s nearly about $12 a barrel of tax,” Bryant said.

Bryant said he would be able to reinvest about $50,000 a year back into his business if the tax cut were passed.

“We could ultimately buy fermentation tanks, we could give raises, we could hire new people we could update a lot of things that would go right back into the business,” Bryant said.

Bryant thinks it would also give Washington state brewers a better leg up on competing states like Oregon. According to the Brewers Association Oregon’s excise tax is about half that of Washington’s.

“I think part of what’s happened ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, GA: Craft breweries and distilleries could soon be able to sell their products directly to customers
Craft breweries and distilleries located in Georgia could soon be able to sell their products directly to customers, WJBF-TV reported on February 26.

Right now, alcohol manufacturers have to sell their products to a wholesaler who then sells the products to retail stores.

Breweries can offer “free samples” of beer to customers who purchase tickets for tours, but customers can’t just show up at breweries to buy beer.

Last week, Savannah River Brewing Company opened in Augusta. It’s the 2nd craft brewery to open in the Garden City.

Savannah River Brewing president, Steve Ellison, says the current state law is confusing for consumers.

“The first person who showed up at the brewery on Saturday was a gentlemen who didn’t really understand the laws that are currently in place. And he just wanted to buy a beer. He was just like, ‘can I buy one of your beers? I see you’re open now, so can I get one of your beers?’ And I said, ‘no you have to buy a tour,'” Ellison said.

Georgia Senate Bill 85 was created for craft breweries, but distilleries were recently added to the legislation.

The bill passed the senate and should pass the house. After that, the governor will have to sign ...More info on site

Brewery news Canada, ON: Refined Fool Brewing receives approval to open second brewing facility
Blackburn News reports that Refined Fool Brewing has received approval from Sarnia city council to open a second brewing facility at 1326 London Road, a location that currently houses a home renovation supply store.

This marks the second attempt by the brewery to expand to a new location, after its plans to take over a property in downtown Sarnia were approved by the city but later abandoned due to issues with the building owner.

The new location, which will be vacated soon due to the impending liquidation of TJ’s Home Renovation Centre, is planned to feature a brewhouse producing “nearly 2,500 barrels a year at startup, with long-term annual production at the site of just over 9,700 barrels.” In addition, the new facility will have a full service restaurant, taproom, and retail store.

While most of Refined Fool’s production will shift to the new brewery, the taproom and retail store at the existing downtown location will remain open.

Brewery news USA, VA: Corcoran Brewing Company to merge with with B Chord Brewing
Jim and Lori Corcoran's Corcoran Brewing Company announced on February 24 they are forming a new partnership with B Chord Brewing, owned by Marty and Rose Dougherty, to create a “better and stronger” brewery operation, Loudoun Times-Mirror reported.

The new brewery, which will be under the B Chord Brewing Company name, will have operations in Round Hill and in Purcellville, pending the licensing and approval process.

As one of the first farm breweries in Virginia, the Corcorans became friends with the Doughertys while B Chord was working to have their license approved in Bluemont.

After ABC denied B Chord's brewery license in Bluemont, B Chord decided not to appeal and they've moved to Round Hill, where they are still awaiting licensing approvals.

“Marty is very passionate about farm brewing and his desire to bring additional agricultural usage to Loudoun through brewing was right in line with my ideas,” Jim Corcoran said in a prepared statement.

“Together, as B Chord Brewing Company, we’ll be able to focus on great craft beer, brewed with fresh ingredients sourced from our own Round Hill farm or from other nearby farmers. I’m very excited to be part of a farm brewery again,” Corcoran added.

Once all the appropriate licenses and government ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, WI: Old World Wisconsin planning to build a $1.65 million brewery
Old World Wisconsin is planning to build a $1.65 million brewery and biergarten, modeled after Wisconsin’s historic 19th century breweries, the Milwaukee Business Journal reported on February 24.

The new brewery and biergarten is included in Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker’s 2017-2019 capital budget, released earlier this week by the state Department of Administration.

While the project is included in the budget, it will not be built with public dollars, said Dan Freas, director of Old World Wisconsin, the 600-acre outdoor museum near Eagle.

“The project is funded through donations,” he said. “It’s included in capital budget because the building is being built on state-owned property. Actual funds will be privately obtained.”

Old World Wisconsin, which is a part of the Wisconsin Historical Society, is aiming to secure funding for the project by 2018.

The brewery is part of a larger plan for Old World Wisconsin, in particular a new entry complex and arrival experience that hasn’t been updated since the 1970s, said Freas.

The brewery itself will be created in partnership with the Milwaukee-based Museum of Beer and Brewing, and will feature brewing techniques used by immigrant brewers in Wisconsin in the 1800s.

In an effort to rediscover historic brewing skills, there will be a temporary brewhouse ...More info on site

Brewery news Canada, ON: Barnstormer Brewing & Distilling buys land parcel in Midland for its second brewery
The town of Midland in Ontario’s Huronia Region has announced that its Council has unanimously approved the sale of a parcel of land at 526 Bay Street to Barnstormer Brewing & Distilling, allowing the company to open a second location 50 km north of its original facility in Barrie.

According to a press release announcing the agreement, the land which currently houses a municipal parking lot was declared surplus last month “for the purpose of pursuing the economic development opportunity and enter into negotiations to sell the land to the prospective buyer.”

“We are thrilled that Barnstormer has chosen Midland to launch their (new) microbrewery,” said Midland Mayor Gord McKay in a statement. “Their three million dollar investment in our downtown will spur our local economy, provide jobs and serve as a new attraction for our area’s tourism industry.”

No timeline has been announced for the construction and opening of Barnstormer’s Midland brewery, except to note that the project is “slated to begin after applicable engineering related issues are completed.”

Brewery news Canada, NS: Stillwell Brewing to launch its own dedicated brewing facility
Following the release of several beers brewed in collaboration with breweries including North and Big Spruce, Halifax craft beer bar Stillwell has announced plans to launch its own dedicated brewing and barrel aging facility – albeit with the assistance of another local brewery.

Stillwell Brewing is being set up in a warehouse space in the back of the Gottingen St. location of Propeller Brewery, and will be focused on producing “dry, balanced, drinkable, table-friendly farmhouse” beers.

Brewing is expected to start within a month, with the first oak-aged releases to come out in late summer or early fall.

Brewery news USA, WI: Noble Roots Brewing Co. joins the Green Bay brewing scene
Noble Roots Brewing Co. is the sixth craft beer brewery in metro Green Bay, the Green Bay Press Gazette reported on February 23.

The brewhouse and taproom opened on February 23 at 2790 University Ave.

The brewery is family-owned and operated. Marvin Falish is head of sales and taproom operations, Alex Falish is head of brewing operations and Jordan Sullivan is head of finance. Tyler Falish is head of marketing. Rounding out the ownership group is Megan Falish, Jeanne Falish and Katie Sullivan.

Noble Roots is the second brewery to locate on Green Bay's east side. It had looked at downtown and other areas, but the University Avenue building, which it remodeled, fit its needs.

"One of the reasons we like it, it's really embedded in a residential neighborhood," Tyler Falish said. "That's been great for us right from the beginning. Neighbors come by, checking on the progress, asking when we are going to be open."

They also like that Festival Foods and planned Kwik Trip are a mile to the west as part of the city's University Avenue revitalization project.

"I think the east side of Green Bay has capacity to support more like this," Falish said. "With Festival up over there and the new ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, IL: Vice District Brewing nearly all set to open in April
Vice District Brewing is nearly all set to open in Homewood. The brewery is eyeing a mid-to-late April opening date at its already approved site at 18022 Dixie Highway, according to a recent report from the Homewood-Flossmoor Chronicle.

Owners Curtis Tarver and Quintin Cole already operate a popular brewery in the South Loop of Chicago, but the Homewood location has potential to be even better. The Dixie Highway facility will be able to make about 4,000 barrels of beer per year at the start, while their Chicago brewery produced 800 barrels during all of 2016.

Other sure to be popular aspects of the Homewood brewery will be the 15-barrel brewhouse and taproom.

While most of the leg work is already done, it will be about a six week process before the beer will be ready for patrons and to distribute to local establishments.

“We are working on getting the barrels, kegs and cans in place,” Tarver said. “We anticipate that we will be able to start brewing in mid- to late-April.”

Brewery news Canada, MB: Brazen Hall Kitchen getting ready to open in Winnipeg
Look up the definition of "brazen," and the first word to pop up is "bold."

That’s what the owners of Brazen Hall Kitchen and Brewery have planned for 800 Pembina Highway in Winnipeg when it opens its doors a few weeks from now, the Metro reported on February 16.

They promise bold and flavourful food. Bold and unique beer brewed on site. Bold new look where the former Round Table used to be.

Like a phoenix rising from the ashes, the new 225-seat restaurant and microbrewery is taking over the former 8,000-square-foot establishment that first made its presence known in 1973 as a favourite place to gather in the Fort Rouge area for drinks and good food, like prime rib. The favourite dish may make a resurgence, or maybe not. That’s still up in the air.

“This is about out with the old and in with the new,” said Brazen Hall President Kristjan Kristjansson, whose family has been part of this spot for 44 years.

“We served our last customers in June of last year, closed up, and then immediately moved on,” he said. “It was time for something new. We hired consultants who told us just as much.”

The isn’t the first restaurant rodeo for ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, GA: Savannah River Brewing Company opens for business in Augusta
The Garden City’s 2nd craft brewery is open for business, WJBF-TV reported on February 25.

Savannah River Brewing Company is located in downtown Augusta on 5th Street.

Hundreds of people showed up at the brewery on February 25 to get a taste of the brewery’s five beers on rotation.

The brewmaster gave beer drinkers tours of the facility and told them how the beers are made.

Savannah River Brewing President Steve Ellison says the opening day was a dream come true for him, especially because of all the positive feedback.

“They said it’s wonderful beer. They’re happy we’re here. They’re happy about the place. They love the facility and so it couldn’t be a better first day,” he said.

The brewery’s beers will soon be available in bottles at stores around the CSRA.

The beer will also be on tap at local restaurants.

Right now, the five beers are the Savannah River IPA, the Dynamite Brown Ale, the No Jacket Required Pilsner, the Witty Belgian Witbier and the Westobou Amber Ale.

Brewery tours are offered Thursday through Sunday.

Brewery news USA, KY: Holsopple Brewing becomes Lyndon’s first craft brewery
Lyndon got its first craft brewery on February 21, when Holsopple Brewing opened to enthusiastic crowds, Insider Louisville reported on February 22.

The cozy taproom tucked away in a building just off Lyndon Lane buzzed, and the line to the bar ebbed and flowed. Meanwhile, a makeshift tent sheltered the overflow, many of whom were displaced members of the Bluegrass Brewing Co. Worthogs club.

Holsopple, owned by Sam and Kristy Gambill, announced last fall it would open in early 2017. Time since has been spent finishing out the taproom and getting the six-barrel brewing system up and running, not to mention acquiring permits.

The brewery opened with six beers on tap: Amber Lager, Aloupa Pale Ale, Bob’s Blessing Porter, Paula’s Pilsner, Project Alpha “A” IPA, and St. SÖB, a dry Irish stout.

The Aloupa, a crisp and approachable American pale ale, is a flagship beer of sorts. Paula’s Pilsner and the Amber Lager are the first in what Sam Gambill promises will be an ongoing series of lager beers, while the Irish stout will be a pleaser for Guinness fans, and the porter is a rich, roasty version of the style.

The Gambills have worked in the industry for many years, so it’s no surprise ...More info on site

Brewery news Canada, NB: Celtic Knot Brewing set for a move and large expansion this spring
The Atlantic Canada Beer Blog reports that a home-based nanobrewery near Moncton is getting set for a move and large expansion this spring.

Celtic Knot Brewing was launched in June 2013 by veteran homebrewer Bruce Barton, who has been brewing on an 80 litre system in his home in Riverview, and releasing his beers exclusively on draught at select local bars and pubs.

Barton announced on Facebook last week that he has obtained a location elsewhere in Riverview where he will be installing a 3.75 barrel – or approximately 450 litre – brewhouse, and also starting retail growler sales.

The new Celtic Knot location is planned to be up and running in two months.

Barley news USA, MT: USDA announces $300,000 in funding for Montana State University and the Rocky Mountain Malting Barley Cooperative
U.S. Senator Steve Daines announced on February 23 $300,000 in funding from the U.S Department of Agriculture for Montana State University and the Rocky Mountain Malting Barley Cooperative, KXLF Butte News reported.

The Rocky Mountain Malting Barley Cooperative is led by Dr. Jamie Sherman, the Project Director at MSU that is working to develop new barley varieties that are demonstrated to provide flavor and are adapted for dryland production in Montana and the West.

"Agriculture is Montana's number economic driver and I'm thrilled to announce funding to make agriculture sustainable and growing for generations to come," said Senator Daines.

The senator has also been a consistent advocate for robust funding of agriculture research that is essential to ensuring Montana's farmers and ranchers can continue to be among the most productive and efficient in the world.

Brewery news USA, PA: Pocono Brewing Company to reopen
The Pocono Brewing Company, also known as PBC, is coming back. And it may feature beers like Big Pocono and Grey Towers, the Pocono Record reported on February 25.

The restaurant is reopening sometime in April under the new management of its owners after closing a year ago. It will spotlight Italian-American food offerings and a variety of on-site brewed beers in a family atmosphere.

Silvio Vitiello of Tobyhanna bought the restaurant in 2014 after his Gilbert restaurant, Luna Rosa, in Polk Township, burned down. He then leased it out to a third party.

"The major issue with the other owners, they were doing nothing different," Vitiello said. "The food was the old diner food you could buy anywhere."

The restaurant has undergone remodeling since last July. He's bringing in new equipment, including a new brewing system.

The food will range from homemade pasta to traditional Neapolitan pizza, fresh mozzarella, and a wood burning pizza oven that he bought in from Napoli, Italy. Vitiello's family has been in the restaurant business for over 30 years, also owning restaurants in New Jersey.

"We have our heart and soul into our business," Vitiello said. "We are from the area."

The marketing has a lot to do with it, he ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, CA: South Lake Brewing Company on the verge of opening
South Lake Brewing Company is officially on the verge of opening. Owners Chris and Nicole Smith signed a lease for their brewery in June 2016, and the process — which, from concept until now, lasted almost four years — is nearing its end, the Tahoe Daily Tribune reported on February 25.

Since the couple received their building permit in December, the site has primarily housed construction. New concrete was poured in January, along with the installation of a trench stream for draining the fermentation tanks, which were brought in approximately three weeks ago.

"We jacked up a fork lift in the storm — it was the craziest thing. The tallest portion of the brew house barely fit — there was about ¼ of an inch between the top piece and the roof," Nicole said.

Now, few steps remain before the Smiths decorate and open their establishment, which is located on Lake Tahoe Boulevard just west of the Y.

"Coming up is dry walling and painting, and pouring the bar. It'll be a concrete bar, and we'll make it look nice with recycled wood," Nicole stated.

Before those final steps can happen, the electrician and plumber to make the proper connections, when they will then passivate ...More info on site

Construction on a new downtown Winston-Salem brewery began this week in a former tobacco warehouse on Trade Street, the Triad Business Journal reported on February 22.

Cousins Stuart Barnhart and David Ashe said they expect construction of their Fiddlln’ Fish Brewery Co. at 772 Trade St. NW to take about 4 1/2 months. Barnhart and Ashe are leasing the land. They obtained a building permit on Feb. 13 for an estimated $722,000 in renovations.

The brewery shares a loading dock with neighbor Broad Branch Distillery. Black Mountain Chocolate Factory & Kitchen sits at the opposite end of the same retail complex.

Barnhart and Ashe obtained large industrial windows from a Winston-Salem building and 105-year-old heart pine for the counter in the taproom. Cable spools will make up some of the tables. They’ve also purchased some roll-up, glass doors.

Brewery news USA, PE: Montague Brewing Company announces details of its planned business
The Guardian newspaper reports that a brewery planning to open later this year in Montague on the eastern end of Prince Edward Island has announced details of the business and what it will offer.

Montague Brewing Company – which will also be known as Beer Island – is being established by businessman David McGuire, and will be located in a former call centre building at 9 Brook St. in the picturesque town.

McGuire tells the paper that he has hired a Bavarian brewmaster with three decades of experience at breweries throughout Europe, and that the brewery will offer “a lineup of authentic, flavourful beers, with seasonal offerings throughout the year.”

The facility will also feature a retail store, taproom, and restaurant focused on local food, and beers will also be canned for off-site distribution.

While no firm timeline has been announced, McGuire hopes that the brewery will be up and running sometime this summer.

Barley news Australia: Exporters finding solid demand for Australian barley
Exporters appear to be finding solid demand for Australian barley, the Stock & Land reported on February 28.

This comes little more than a week after ABARES dramatically raised its estimate of last season’s harvest to a record 13.4 million tonnes.

Strong exporter demand for barley has seen feed barley prices into Geelong climb by A$10 a tonne from the lows of mid-January to A$164 last week. Barley exports in containers from Victoria have rocketed in recent months. Monthly Port of Melbourne data reveals 48,071 tonnes of barley was shipped in January, up from 34,200 tonnes in December and a monthly average of less than 10,000 tonnes for most of 2016.

China has returned as a major barley buyer. It imported 561,000 tonnes of Australian barley in January – the largest monthly imports by China in two years and third-largest ever.

Brewery news China & Taiwan: Taiwan's Kuomingtang Party claims ownership of Tsingtao Brewery
Taiwan's Kuomingtang (KMT) Party is aiming to retake Tsingtao Brewery, one of China's biggest beer makers, from the Chinese mainland with recently presented archival ownership documents to prove its claim, China.org.cn reported on March 1st.

Speaking at a press conference on Feb. 17, Chiu Da-chan, director of KMT's administration and management committee, argued that the KMT was not empty handed when it came to Taiwan after the civil war with the Communist Party of China.

Archival documents discovered in Taiwan last year can purportedly prove that the Chiloo Industries, KMT's earliest property, owns Tsingtao Brewery and used to operate a rubber plant and a flour mill, he explained.

Chiu also called on the "Ill-gotten Party Assets Settlement Committee" to retake the assets from the Chinese mainland.

Taiwan media also cited KMT insiders that the rubber plant, also owned by Chiloo Industries, has been developed into Bridgestone, the world's largest tire and rubber company.

Brewery news Thailand: Craft beer wave lapping at Thailand’s shores
The global craft beer wave is lapping at Thailand's shores, igniting a debate over strict rules that limit market access and brand independent brewers as outlaws, the Nikkei Asian Review reported on February 27.

The Thai beer market is dominated by Boon Rawd Brewery and Thai Beverage, the brewers behind the Singha and Chang brands. Restaurants and bars that serve craft beer and other alternatives are sprouting up around the country, but meeting increasingly diverse consumer tastes has its pitfalls.

One man serving up distinctive suds is Piek Pipatnapon, owner of the Golden Coins Taproom. The craft beer bar, nestled among restaurants in Bangkok's Ekkamai neighborhood, opened at the end of last year. Crowds start forming around an outdoor counter at about 6 p.m., when the bar opens. Six beers are on tap.

A 22-year-old Thai university student who was drinking alone said the beers are a little pricey, but the unique flavors make it worthwhile to come back once or twice a week. A 40-something British tourist was just happy to sample something other than Singha and Chang, for a change.

Piek said craft beer started to catch on in Thailand a few years ago. His solution for getting around the liquor law ...More info on site
