SELECT THE PRUNING DATE FOR HOPS CAREFULLY

ABSTRACT
It is easy to imagine that the harvest date has a big influence on the hop oil content and hop oil composition of the harvested hops. A couple of studies have shown this already. These Japanese researchers delved far deeper into factors influencing the final hop aroma in hops and looked specifically at the variety Saaz to determine if pruning date is important. By collecting extensive data throughout four harvest years in four different regions, they found that harvest time was the most influential factor in determining hop aroma characteristics among the various factors in cultivation. They also found that the chemical compounds associated with floral, fruity, and citrusy characteristics are highly dependent on the harvest time or pruning date. This is a further confirmation of our Barth-Haas hypothesis – it seems that everything you do matters in terms of flavour with hops!.

Brewery news USA: Legalized marijuana slowing down the beer business in Colorado, Oregon and Washington - report
Legalized marijuana is harshing the buzz of three longtime craft beer meccas, according to a new report from Cowen and Company.

In Colorado, Oregon and Washington, where recreational cannabis use has been legalized, the beer business is underperforming, according to Vivien Azer, Cowen and Company’s managing director and senior research analyst specializing in the beverage, tobacco and cannabis sectors.

Azer unpacked the latest Nielsen data in those three states — beer markets that have “collectively underperformed” in the last two years — and found that “the magnitude of the underperformance has increased notably,” with beer volumes falling more than two percent year-to-date and trailing the overall U.S. beer market.

“While (marijuana) retail sales opened up in these markets at different points of time, with all three of these states now having fully implemented a retail infrastructure, the underperformance of beer in these markets has worsened over the course of 2016,” Azer wrote.

“This is perhaps not surprising, given that U.S. government data for the states of CO, WA and OR all show consistent growth in cannabis incidence among 18-25 year olds,” she added, “coupled with declines in alcohol incidence (in terms of past month use).”

In those markets, craft beer is slowing but the “biggest ...More info on site

Brewery news UK & USA: BrewDog reports progress in launching of its Ohio brewery
Giant, fantastical sea creatures are rendered in brilliant pastels on the walls of BrewDog’s brewery and U.S. headquarters in Canal Winchester, Ohio, the Columbus Dispatch reported on November 27.

So far, the science-fiction ocean scenery — the beasts cover a wall in the brewery, and most of an exterior concrete panel — are among the few projects related to the U.S. expansion that the Scotland-based craft brewer has completed.

Delays, both here and abroad, have scuttled the original plan that called for beer to begin flowing in August — this past August — and the firm’s plans to open its first U.S. brewpub, slated for the Franklinton neighborhood, have slipped into 2018.

Yet BrewDog remains confident that the tide of events has turned in its favor.

Most of its fermentation tanks, piping and brewhouse arrived this month from Germany. With equipment now on site, BrewDog anticipates it will start testing its system in February, and beer should roll out of its $30 million U.S. headquarters in April.

“I can’t wait,” said brewmaster Tim Hawn, whom BrewDog hired away from Dogfish Head. “I haven’t brewed since February. It’s all coming together now.”

Its taproom and the restaurant at the brewery also are months behind schedule, but they ...More info on site

Barley news USA, ID: Top-quality malting barley sold for cattle rations
Idaho grain companies have been buying loads of top-quality malting barley to blend into cattle rations, providing a market for surplus production growers have been unable to sell to the major malting companies, Capital Press reported on November 14.

Idaho growers raised more than 62 million bushels of quality malt barley this season, up 10 percent from the prior year, according to the Idaho Barley Commission.

IBC has been working with existing buyers, Mexican beer manufacturers and Latin American growth markets to move as much of the surplus as possible, and encouraged growers with storage to be patient while options are explored. Grain buyers Scoular and Lansing Trade Group vow they’ll find a home in feeding channels for unwanted malt — and many growers without sufficient grain storage have already taken them up on their offer, selling at about half the malt value.

Growers have reported malting companies have been hesitant to buy surplus production beyond contract volumes — even of the best malt — and have also indicated their intentions to contract for about 15 percent less acreage next season.

Many growers, such as Derek Reed of Idaho Falls, are still waiting to see if malting companies will buy some of their overages, ...More info on site

Brewery news Canada, ON: Katalyst Brewing to release its first beer next month
A new contract brewer with an aim to open a physical location in Toronto’s west end is getting set to release its first beer next month, Canadian Beer News reported on November 25.

Katalyst Brewing has been founded by long-time homebrewer Mark Verok, who is treating contract brewing as “a means to an end” in order to build up the brand and attract investors for a bricks-and-mortar operation.

Verok is currently brewing out of Cool Brewing in Etobicoke, and will soon be launching Symington Saison, the first Katalyst brand.

Symington Saison is a 5.5% abv ale brewed with a grain bill that features rye, wheat and 2-row malt, and Saaz hops.

Symington Saison will be available at select LCBO outlets in Toronto and surrounding area in early December, retailing for C$2.90 per 473 ml can.

Brewery news USA, OH: West Side Brewing aiming at spring opening in Cincinnati
Next spring, a team of four craft beer enthusiasts will bring West Side Brewing to 3044 Harrison Ave. in Westwood, Cincinnati, Soapbox Cincinnati reported on November 29.

Owners Joe Mumper, Jim and Kurtis Remmel and Brian Willet want to get away from the more experimental and over-hopped styles that are currently dominating the beer market and make beer for everyone. Mumper became interested in craft beer about 15 years ago when his brother gave him a homebrew kit for Christmas. He started talking about opening a brewery, and even looked at the space that is now Rhinegeist. The Remmels and Willet have been working on opening a brewery for about the past two years, and when they met Mumper a year ago, they started to design West Side Brewery. When it opens, West Side will have 12 styles of beer on tap — six of those are already nailed down, with the last six still up in the air and room to expand as more styles are developed. The beers will range in style and will be very drinkable with moderate alcohol contents and hoppiness. The taproom will have a bar at its center that will connect two separate taprooms. Brewery news USA, NC: Uptown Brewing Company at final stages before opening
The newest brewery in eastern North Carolina will open soon. The final stages for Greenville’s first full production brewery, Uptown Brewing Company, are underway, WCTI12.com reported on November 28.

The space located at 418 Evans Street had been vacant for the last 30 years. Benjamin Self is one of the three men behind the company. He said they are now moving equipment in, getting things set up and working on some of the permits necessary before they are fully open.

The business will not only fill the cups of beer enthusiasts, but all also produce beer for restaurants and bars across eastern North Carolina.

“You'll be able to come over here and have a beer you know fresh local, delicious. You'll be able to enjoy that, watch the TV or watch us make beer," Self said.

A date for the grand opening is not set yet but the goal is to open by the New Year.

Brewery news USA, IL: Off Color Brewing to launch second brewery in Chicago
Off Color Brewing, which has developed one of Chicago’s strongest craft beer followings despite its remote West Side location, is about to become much more accessible, the Chicago Tribune reported on November 30.

The brewery plans to open a taproom and second brewing operation next year at 1460 N. Kingsbury St., co-founder John Laffler said on November 30. The goal is to have it open by summer, he said.

Laffler said the expansion comes much more quickly than he and partner Dave Bleitner anticipated. The current brewery, near Armitage Avenue and Pulaski Road, hit five-year sales and production goals in year two and quickly reached capacity, he said.

“We’re so far ahead of where we thought we’d be at this point, it’s crazy,” he said.

With a healthy following that includes long lines for bottle releases and tourists showing up looking for a taproom that doesn’t exist, plans were accelerated with a goal of being more centrally located.

“The outskirts of Logan Square is perfect for what that the current brewery is supposed to be — production, and not that convenient to the public,” Laffler said. “Now we want to fill in the second half and have a space where people can come and hang ...More info on site

Brewery news Vietnam: Carlsberg says Habeco share price fuelled by speculative buying
Carlsberg A/S, the Danish brewer that wants to buy a majority stake in Hanoi Beer Alcohol Beverage Corp., said a surge in the Vietnamese company’s share price has been fuelled by speculative buying, setting the stage for heated negotiations in Southeast Asia’s fastest-growing beer market, Bloomberg reported on November 27.

A near tripling of Habeco’s price since its Oct. 28 listing on Vietnam’s regulated over-the-counter exchange doesn’t accurately reflect the underlying value of the business as it’s “mainly due to speculative buying on very thin volume,” Tayfun Uner, chief executive officer of Carlsberg Vietnam, said in an interview in Hanoi.

Habeco shares closed as high as 144,700 dong ($6.40) this month after initially being listed at 39,000 dong, a price Uner described as fair. The government announced in August it wants to sell its 82 percent stake for $404 million, or about 48,000 dong a share, which according to Uner is a reasonable valuation.

Vietnam is in the midst of restructuring state ownership of Habeco in the north and top brewer Saigon Beer Alcohol Beverage Corp., known as Sabeco, in the country’s south. The potential divestment is drawing interest from the world’s largest brewers including Heineken NV, Anheuser-Busch InBev NV and Asahi Group ...More info on site

Brewery news Vietnam: Heineken may be given green light to increase production capacity in Ba Ria-Vung province soon
Heineken Vietnam Brewery may be given soon the go-ahead to increase the capacity of its beer production factory in the southern province of Ba Ria-Vung Tau to 610 million litres per year from the existing 50 million litres, VietNamNet Bridge reported on November 29.

This information was published on the MoIT’s website. The adjustment is based on Vietnam’s plan on beer, wine, and beverage production to 2025 with a vision to 2035. According to the forecast in the plan, the volume of beer consumed in the country is expected to reach 4.1 billion litres per year by 2020. The figure may be 3.3 billion litres already in 2016. Thus, the adjustment seems suitable with the above plan.

The Ba Ria-Vung Tau Industrial Zones Management Authority asked Heneiken Vietnam to carry out a survey on market demand as well as the necessary infrastructure. Besides, Heneiken Vietnam will have to determine the specific capacity for each phase of expansion.

Earlier, in late August, Heineken Vietnam completed the purchase of Carlsberg Breweries A/S’s entire holding, equalling 55 per cent, in Carlsberg Vietnam Breweries-Vung Tau JSC, a joint venture between Carlsberg and Hanoi Beer, Alcohol and Beverage JSC (Habeco). The stakes were transferred at a ...More info on site

Brewery news Vietnam: Sabeco to be officially listed on the Ho Chi Minh City Stock Exchange on December 6
On December 6, Vietnam's largest brewer Saigon Alcohol, Beer and Beverage Corporation (Sabeco) will be officially listed on the Ho Chi Minh City Stock Exchange, eight years after its initial public offering in January 2008, VietNamNet Bridge reported on November 29.

According to newswire Vneconomy, 641 million Sabeco shares, representing a chartered capital of VND6.41 trillion ($286.67 million), will be available for trading at the initial reference unit price of VND110,000 ($4.84) under the ticker SAB.

After the listing, Sabeco’s capitalisation is expected to reach VND70 trillion ($3.13 billion), propelling it into the ranks of the top five enterprises on the HoSE in terms of capitalisation, following Vinamilk, Vietcombank, PV Gas and Vingroup.

Earlier, on September 26, the Ministry of Industry and Trade approved Sabeco’s proposal to list on the HoSE. Listing on a stock exchange was an imperative condition for state divestment from Sabeco.

Sabeco consolidated its reputation as the top beer producer in Vietnam with a nine-month revenue of over VND21.8 trillion ($974.95 million), up 9 per cent on-year, of which beer made up 86 per cent of total sales, equivalent to VND18.8 trillion ($840.78 million), or 1.2 billion litres of beer.

Its consolidated after-tax profit reached nearly VND3.66 trillion ($165.47 million), up ...More info on site

Brewery news Russia: Russia’s craft beer labels seen as a relatively inexpensive luxury amid crisis
A staple drink of Russia’s recession comes in different flavors but it’s best consumed standing up. Food is optional.

Not a beer country until the arrival a decade ago of a central European tradition of sit-down bars that married brews with hearty meals, Russia is now revelling in the new craft labels that have exploded in popularity during the nation’s longest recession this century. The number of Russian microbreweries soared 10-fold in the past five years, and almost all of Moscow’s 100 or so watering holes serving craft beer opened in the last two years after the rouble’s crash left some local brews costing less than half the price for imported beer, Bloomberg reported on November 29.

“It’s a relatively inexpensive luxury,” said Douglas Zent, a Texan who’s been the financial muscle behind Moscow Region-based Victory Art Brew.

While the craft beer revolution may have been decades late to touch down in Russia, it’s caught on as inflation and a currency crisis gutted salaries, forcing people to make do with less. The new names on offer are taking off not just by appealing to the palate but also by sparing the wallet. What’s more, the dives serve up craft beer as part of ...More info on site

Brewery news Belgium: Belgium's unique beer culture inscribed on UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity
Belgium's unique beer culture has been inscribed on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), the UN agency announced on November 30.

"Making and appreciating beer is part of the living heritage of a range of communities throughout Belgium. It plays a role in daily life, as well as festive occasions," UNESCO said in a press release.

Almost 1,500 types of beer are produced in the country using different fermentation methods, while some Trappist communities have also been involved in beer production giving profits to charity, it noted.

UNESCO also praised Belgium's efforts to pass down the traditional skills and knowledge in the beer industry.

"Besides being transmitted in the home and social circles, knowledge and skills are also passed down by master brewers who run classes in breweries, specialised university courses that target those involved in the field and hospitality in general, public training programs for entrepreneurs, and small test breweries for amateur brewers," it said.

Belgian Prime Minister Charles Michel posted the news on his Twitter account, and invited people to "come on to Belgium and taste it."

Meanwhile, culture ministers of Belgium's three linguistic communities (Dutch, French and German) issued ...More info on site

Brewery news Spain: Mahou San Miguel launches new craft beer division
Spanish beer promoter Cervecera Independiente announced the launch of microbrewery Nómada Brewing's craft beers on November 25, ESM Magazine reported.

The company, which is the 'new business' division of Mahou San Miguel and aims to develop and drive beer culture in Spain, introduced the line made by Javier Aldea and Sami Claret, who founded the microbrewery in 2011.

The eleven beers are the first craft range developed fully at the R&D facilities of Mahou San Miguel in Alovera, Guadalajara.

The range will be available in select retailers and features labels designed by young artists.

The beers are divided into three production lines: an 'everyday' beer, available throughout the year, and the seasonal and limited edition beers, which will only be sold at certain times of year.

Whisky news UK & India: Scotch Whisky Association urges government to prioritise free-trade agreement with India
Following the UK’s decision to leave the EU, The Scotch Whisky Association (SWA) has urged the government to prioritise a free-trade agreement with India, reports Drinks Business.

“Brexit poses challenges and uncertainty but also brings opportunities if the UK can secure favourable bilateral trade deals with key export markets”, said David Frost, Scotch Whisky Association chief executive.

“India, for example, is a growing market for Scotch but we are being held back by a 150% import tariff. EU talks with India have proved challenging for a decade now and we hope the UK will now take a fresh approach to securing an ambitious trade agreement.”

Given the changed scenario, Beam Suntory is betting on increased business with India and has launched two peated single malts in the market – The Ardmore Legacy and Bowmore 12 Year Old.

Launched under its Peated Malts of Distinction portfolio, the whiskies join Islay malt Laphroaig 10 Year Old, and signal the company’s continued commitment to the India market, where it sees huge potential.

“India is one of the world’s leading Scotch markets, and we expect these incredible brands to become exclusive and aspirational expressions in India,” said Beam Suntory in a statement announcing their release. “We are confident that ...More info on site
