POLYPHENOL PROFILES OF DIFFERENT
HOP VARIETIES AND THEIR IMPACT ON
BEER FLAVOR
ABSTRACT
A Japanese research team investigated the different
polyphenol profiles of the varieties Hallertau Mittelfrueh,
Hallertau Tradition, Saazer, Tettnanger, Perle and
Cascade. Analysing a range of different polyphenol
monomers, they found that the classic European land
varieties have more proanthocyanidin whereas the
others had more flavonones and prenylflavonoids.
These different profiles showed a flavor difference
in the brewed beers in regards to sweetness and
astringency. A strong correlation to the genetic
heritage was also visible. The researchers found that
proanthyocyanidin correlates with the fullness of beer
while the content of flavonone and prenylflavonoid
correlates with the intensity of astringency.

World: AB InBev wins approval for its takeover of SABMiller plc
|
Anheuser-Busch InBev NV on September 28 won approval for its $100 billion takeover of rival SABMiller PLC, ushering in a new world order for the beer industry.
Shareholders voted overwhelmingly in favor of the $100 billion-plus acquisition, one of the largest in corporate history. AB InBev will drop the SABMiller name and begin trading as a combined company Oct. 11.
It also strengthens rival brewers who were able to scoop up discarded pieces of SABMiller. AB InBev sold off dozens of brands to gain regulatory approval for the deal, including Miller Lite, Peroni and Snow, the world's top-selling beer.
The takeover is just the latest in a string of acquisitions for the Budweiser brewer. Built through the 2004 combination of Brazil's AmBev and Belgium's Interbrew, the company has now bought four major brewers since 2008, including Anheuser-Busch Cos., Mexico's Grupo Modelo and Korea's Oriental Brewing.
Its pursuit of SABMiller began a year ago at a time when Belgium-based AB InBev was struggling to revive Budweiser in the U.S., its biggest market, and facing an economic downturn in Brazil, its second-biggest market.

EU: Low alcohol and alcohol-free beer drive consumption volumes in Western Europe in 2015
|
Low alcohol and alcohol-free variants have been major drivers of beer consumption volumes in 2015, and are becoming widely accepted as flavorsome alternatives to regular strength beer, according to consumer insight firm Canadean.
The company’s latest report states that due to the health and wellness trend becoming more entrenched in consumer lifestyles, low alcohol beer volumes in West Europe have been growing by 1 percent annually. Indeed, alcohol-free beer recorded growth of 7 percent in 2015, and is the fastest growing segment by alcohol strength over a seven-year period.
Germany, a country whose alcoholic beer culture is internationally renowned, is a key driver of West Europe’s low and non-alcoholic beer volumes, accounting for over half of low alcohol and alcohol-free beer consumption. Growth in Germany’s low alcohol beer and alcohol-free beer volumes outpaced that of West Europe in 2015, at 5 percent and 3 percent, respectively. This growth can be attributed to the strength of the domestic industry, as Germany boasts the most popular brands in both strength segments, with Erdinger Alkoholfrei (Erdinger) generating the largest alcohol-free volumes, and Oettinger Radler (Oettinger Bier Brauhaus) leading the low alcohol segment. Vietnam: Sabeco’s listing on the Ho Chi Minh Stock Exchange approved by government and expected by December
|
Vietnam's largest beer producer Sabeco has secured government approval to list shares on the Ho Chi Minh Stock Exchange, a government official said on September 27, with a listing expected by December, Reuters reported.
Ho Chi Minh City-based Sabeco, or fully known as the Saigon Beer, Alcohol, Beverage Corp, is valued at $2 billion by the government and is known for its Bia Saigon and 333 beers.
"The approval has been granted," Phan Dang Tuat, head of the Industry and Trade Ministry's enterprise renovation and development committee, told Reuters, confirming earlier state media reports.
"(Sabeco) has 10 to 12 weeks to debut, depending on the consultative contract," he added, referring to Sabeco's plans to hire a consultant firm to advise on the listing.

USA: Trump presidency could be particularly troublesome for Constellation Brands - analyst
|
Donald Trump has repeatedly promised that if elected president, his tenure would be good for business. But one Wall Street analyst says if the Republican nominee wins the White House, it could be particularly troublesome for Big Beer producer Constellation Brands.
Susquehanna Financial Group food and beverage analyst Pablo Zuanic issued a research report warning a potential Trump presidency would have a “meaningful and negative effect” on Constellation Brands, which generates 70% of earnings from the import of well-known Mexican beer brands, such as Corona, Modelo Especial and Victoria. Zuanic points out that if Trump’s policies were implemented, it could hurt both Constellation Brands’ target customer base (Mexicans that live in the U.S. that would potentially face deportation) and also the crossover appeal of Mexican heritage in beer.
The warning from Zuanic comes as polls have tightened and show Trump in a near dead-heat with Democratic rival Hillary Clinton. The Wall Street analyst says Constellation Brands investors are essentially ignoring any worries about a Trump presidency, as the stock is up about 17% so far in 2016.

Rwanda: Rwanda’s first craft brewpub to be launched by entrepreneur Josephine Uwineza in collaboration with Canada’s Beau’s All Natural Brewing Company

Rwandan entrepreneur Josephine Uwineza is accustomed to challenging the status quo in her country’s food scene. In 2000, she brought Asian cuisine to the capital city of Kigali with the country’s first Chinese restaurant. Now she has her sights set on disrupting the pub culture in the Central African nation, TakePart.com reported on September 25.
“There’s no craft brewery owned by a woman in Rwanda—not only never owned by a woman, but there’s no craft breweries in Rwanda right now,” Uwineza told TakePart.
Uwineza hopes to fill the void by establishing a brewpub in Kigali, where customers can socialize over a tasting or buy a six-pack to enjoy at home. This week, Uwineza and Beau’s All Natural Brewing Company, based in Canada, announced their partnership with a Kickstarter campaign, seeking roughly $72,000 to purchase a bottling line.
Microbreweries have started cropping up across Africa, gaining popularity in Kenya, Botswana, and South Africa, but they haven’t made their way to Rwanda. The most commonly found beer in Rwanda is Primus, a light lager produced by a Heineken subsidiary.

Vietnam: Ministry of Health considering a ban on sales of liquor and beer at night
|
Vietnam’s Ministry of Health is considering a ban on sales of liquor and beer after either 10:00 p.m. or midnight as officials aim to reduce negative impacts of drinking, VnExpress International reported on September 27.
Nguyen Huy Quang, director of the ministry’s Department of Legal Affairs, told a seminar in Hanoi on September 26 that the ban is part of a new bill on alcohol consumption that is being drafted.
The proposal is based on similar bans already in place in several countries, which the official said have proved effective in curbing the impacts of drinking.
The bill is expected to be put before legislators in 2018.
Vietnam is currently the second biggest consumer of beer and liquor in Southeast Asia, only after Thailand; the 10th largest in Asia; and the 29th largest in the world, Vice Minister of Health Nguyen Thanh Long said.
“If prevention measures are not applied effectively, Vietnam may become the biggest consumer of beer and liquor in the world, not just the 29th,” Long said.
A new study jointly conducted by the ministry and the World Health Organization (WHO) shows that 77 percent of Vietnamese men drink liquor and beer, nearly half of them drink at hazardous levels.

Saudi Arabia: SAGO to take over barley imports from the finance ministry
|
Saudi General Grains Organisation (SAGO) will take over barley imports from the finance ministry starting next week, its director-general was quoted as saying by Reuters on September 25.
SAGO, which was previously called the General Silos and Flour Mills Organisation (GSFMO), handles the storage and operation of silos and production at mills.
SAGO will handle barley imports and more details will be available later this week, SAGO Director-general Ahmed al-Fares said on his twitter account.
Saudi Arabia is one of the world's largest importers of barley.
