USA, NV: Lovelady Brewing finally debuts in Henderson
|
First revealed in 2014, Lovelady Brewing Co. has finally debuted on Henderson's Water Street, bolstered by a strong pedigree for their brewing credentials and a long, local connection to the neighbourhood, Eater Vegas reported on April 5.
Overseen by Richard Lovelady, former chief chief local brewer for Gordon Biersch, Lovelady Brewing sits inside a built-from-scratch 5,975-square-foot taproom with an outdoor covered patio.
Promising "traditional and experimental beers," Lovelady aims to specialize in a handful of cultivated choices, rather than dozens of options. The current selection includes the 9th Island, a carmelized pineapple sour, Paradise City, a pilsner with pale ale hops and the HopAtomic, "a beer to satisfy any Hop Heads!" Crowlers and growlers are available for the beer aficionado on the go.

USA, MA: Night Shift Brewing could double production next year
|
Everett, MA-born brewery just two years into its latest expansion has new plans in the works. Night Shift Brewing could double its production in the next year, add two cans to its lineup, and expand the taproom at its 87 Santilli Hwy. headquarters, according to the Boston Business Journal.
An expansion of the brewery's taproom has been a goal since last fall. An additional 1,000 square feet of space will be added this summer as the brewery works through its new phase of development.
Night Shift has also purchased a $250,000 canning system, which means the brewery can add two cans to its existing lineup of seven. When it first opened at Santilli Highway, Night Shift operated on a 20-barrel brewing system in a space that allowed room for growth, and that's exactly what it will have in the next year with some additional fermenters, it is reported. Night Shift plans to hire more employees to accommodate this expansion.
Michael Oxton, Mike O'Mara, and Rob Burns make up the trio behind Night Shift, which started with the three brewing beer in their spare time. Later, they opened a space at 3 Charlton St. in Everett before opening the current location.

USA, IL: Perennial Artisan Ales brewer plans to open Rockwell Beer Company in St. Louis soon
|
When Andy Hille was first falling in love with the craft-beer scene, he lived on Rockwell Avenue in Chicago, and he and his friends jokingly called their home brew the Club Rockwell Beer Company.
This fall, Hille's joke will become a reality in his native St. Louis, STLToday.com reported on April 5.
Hille, currently a brewer at Perennial Artisan Ales, has announced plans to open Rockwell Beer Company, a 15-barrel production facility with a 2000-square-foot tasting room and a retail store. Rockwell's beer will be available mainly on tap in its tasting room and in 500-milliliter bottles and 16-ounce cans sold in its retail store.
Hille said Rockwell will strike a balance between the sort of experimental beers for which Perennial has become renowned and classic styles.
"We want to make a really solid pilsner and have a good oatmeal stout," Hille says. "Our goal is to find something for everyone."
Hille, who been with Perennial for three and a half years, will continue to work there through this summer's St. Louis Craft Beer Week. Perennial owners Phil and Emily Wymore have been "incredibly supportive" of his plans, he says.

USA, VA: Highmark Brewing preparing to join Virginia’s craft beer scene
|
Highmark Brewing, the most recent brewery to join the Virginia craft beer boom, plans to open in Stafford County this fall, Fredericksburg.com reported.
Led by brewer Mark Thorsted, the business plans to brew a wide range of beer styles with specialties in India pale ales, Belgian brews and stouts.
Highmark has seven local owners who are entrepreneurs and work for the department of defence.
Highmark Brewing is located in the 3,500-square-foot space at 390 Kings Hwy., Suite 107. Co-owner Chuck Rau said they are building out the space, which will feature a tasting room, brewery and outdoor seating.
“As a small, locally-owned brewery, we want to offer quality beer in a casual atmosphere,” he said.

USA, CA: Central Coast Brewing Co. to nearly triple production thanks to new facility
|
Central Coast Brewing Co. is expanding into a second location in San Luis Obispo, which will allow the brewery to nearly triple its current production, The Sna Luis Obispo Tribune reported on April 4.
Owner George Peterson said he signed a 10-year lease in January for a 10,095-square-foot building at 6 Higuera St. in the former home of San Luis Motorsports near Range Master, Caltrans and the San Luis and Sutcliff cemeteries.
Peterson plans to expand the longtime brewer’s operation there, with about 55 percent of the building being used for brewing and production. Portions of the new space will also feature a bar; a tasting and growler refill area; food service, including a pizza oven; at least one outdoor patio; and possibly live music.
“The new brewhouse is substantially larger than we have now, but we’ll be able to grow into it,” he said. “We’ve overbuilt the infrastructure to allow for future expansion.”
Peterson said he hopes the new venture will be running by August. The property is in San Luis Obispo’s commercial-tourism zone, which requires bars or taverns to obtain a use permit from the city’s community development director, San Luis Obispo assistant planner Walter Oetzell said.

USA, MN & ND & SD & NB: Surly Brewing to expand distribution to three more states
|
Surly Brewing Company, the Twin Cities-based craft brewery, will begin distribution in North Dakota, South Dakota and Nebraska in May, KDLT News reported on April 6.
Omar Ansari, founder and president of Surly Brewing said: “We have been talking to Surly fans in North Dakota, South Dakota and Nebraska for ten years now, and every day we receive messages for them asking when we’re coming to their cities. Finally, we’re now able to pay them all back for their awesome support and patience by getting our beer onto their shelves and taps.”
Starting the week of Monday, May 2, Surly will be available at bar and restaurants and retail accounts, which are currently being determined and will be listed on the brewery’s website.
To start, Surly Furious, Hell and Overrated will be featured on draft in bars and restaurants. An assortment of cans, including Bender, Coffee Bender, Furious, Hell, Cynic, Todd The Axe Man, and Overrated! will be available at the retail accounts.
Surly will be introducing itself to the three new markets with programs of events, showcases and ‘Surly Gives A Damn’ community projects in months-long invasion campaigns across the respective states.

USA, OH: Three Tigers Brewing Co. expected to open in the next few weeks
|
The upcoming Three Tigers Brewing Co. is another twist on how to build a beer business, Columbus Business First reported on April 4.
While many brewers start with the beer and build up to the food, the new Granville brewpub expected to open in the next few weeks is doing the opposite. Three Tigers is an offshoot of Mai Chau on Prospect, a six-month-old Vietnamese eatery opened by husband and wife Scott Wilkins and Ashley Wilkins. The two spent several years teaching in Vietnam before returning to their hometown.
Scott Wilkins is a fan of craft beer having been a bartender and sales representatives for Cavalier Distributing, but the business addition is a practical one as well. The 1,700-square-foot space, next to the 980-square-foot Mai Chau at 138 N. Prospect St., was available and he saw an opportunity not just to tap into the craft beer boom, but also to better his business. He had wanted a full liquor license for Mai Chau, but there wasn’t one available in Granville.
“We started thinking about going out to purchase one from outside the village and bring it in,” Wilkins said. “Or, with a brewing permit, a liquor license could follow.”

USA, AL & FL: Trim Tab Brewing expands distribution of its products
|
Trim Tab Brewing is expanding outside of the state of Alabama only six months after the brewery started canning its beers, Al.com reported on April 4.
The Birmingham brewery will start distributing next week in south Alabama and the Florida panhandle.
Allstate Beverage Company will be distributing in the Montgomery area; Gulf Distributing on the Alabama coast; Goldring Gulf Distributing in the Panhandle; and Premium Beverage in Opelika.
"We've had countless people ask for our beers in Montgomery, Auburn and the Gulf Coast in general," owner Harris Stewart said. "We get people who visit Trim Tab form these areas, and now we're so excited to bring our gravitational nectar to them."
The beers will hit shelves on April 11 and the Trim Tab Crew will be holding launch events in six cities in three days starting April 12. The schedule will be posted on Trim Tab's website and Facebook page.
The expansion comes just after the brewery released its Paradise Now Raspberry Berliner Weisse in cans.
"Paradise Now can be enjoyed anywhere, but it's a perfect beer for the beach and anywhere sunny," Stewart said.

USA, NJ: Jersey Girl Brewing scheduled to officially open on April 15
|
With a head brewer whose name is Stoudt, the craft beer must be good at the new Jersey Girl Brewing Co. in Budd Lake, New Jersey Hills reported on April 5.
This Jersey Girl has nothing to do with Tom Waits who wrote the song of the same name or Bruce Springsteen who made it famous.
Rather, it is the name given by its owners, Charles Aaron, 47, and Mike Bigger, 48, both of Flanders, to Morris County’s first microbrewery at 426 Sandshore Road. The brewery will open on Friday, April 15 and there will be a launch party at 4 p.m., Tuesday, April 19, at Morris Tap and Grill, 500 Route 10, Randolph.
Initially, Jersey Girl will offer golden ale, pale ale, Porter and ESB, an extra special bitter English-style pale ale. The brewery is licensed to produce up to 50,000 barrels of beer a year. That production would make Jersey Girl one of the largest on the east coast. Instead, Bigger said he hopes to produce 1,500 to 2,000 barrels in the first year.
The brewery is not licensed to offer entertainment or to serve food but visitors can bring in pizza or other dishes to enjoy while drinking Jersey Girl beer.

South Africa: SABMiller’s success story overview

South African Breweries (SAB) owned brands that could be counted on two hands 20 years ago, and four of them were Castle: Lager, Draught, Lite and Milk Stout. The other big brands were Carling Black Label and Hansa, BDLive reported on April 7.
The previously iconic Lion Lager was slowly being squeezed to death, there were labels of little consequence and some licence agreements.
Founded in 1895, SAB took a commanding grip on the domestic beer market and saw off many aspirant interlopers through ruthless attention to detail, costs and distribution channels. Marketing was largely irrelevant.
In the ’70s and ’80s, SAB chairman Frans Cronje and CEO Dick Goss were two of the most influential business leaders in SA. The beer division was larger than most of SAB’s other businesses, but an integral part of the Byzantine financial structures created when most doors around the world were closed to South African business.

South Korea: Tsingtao becomes South Korea’s No. 1 import beer brand
|
The Chinese beer Tsingtao has emerged as the No. 1 import brand in South Korea at a leading supermarket chain amid the rising popularity of Chinese cuisine in the country, industry data showed on April 8.
According to the data compiled by E-Mart, Tsingtao outpaced other rivals in sales over the January-March period, pushing out traditional leaders, including the Netherlands' Heineken and Japan's Asahi.
In 2014, Heineken stood as the No. 1 player, trailed by Asahi and Belgium's Martens. At that time, Tsingtao was the fourth player.
"The rising popularity of Chinese food, including roasted lamb on skewers, helped Tsingtao gain further ground in South Korea," an E-Mart official said.
It marked the first time for the Chinese beer to take the throne since reaching the South Korean market in 2000.
Industry watchers also said restaurants that serve Chinese-style roasted lamb, which used to operate only in local Chinatowns, are expanding to other areas to reach a wider number of South Koreans. The trend eventually led to more consumers eyeing exotic beer, they added.
Separate data compiled by the state-run Korea Agro-Fisheries & Food Trade Corporation showed imports of Chinese beer brands in 2015 came to 11,490 tons, up 70.6 percent from a year earlier.

Russia: Russian Communist Party wants to copyright the red star used by Heineken among others
|
Russian Communist Party officials have launched a revolution over their beloved red star — seeking to copyright the five-pointed proletariat symbol so that Macy’s and Heineken can’t use it, New York Post reported on April 7.
“Sometimes, our symbols are used for commercial purposes, and the state must protect state symbols from commercial use by foreign firms,” said Vadim Solovyov, the party’s chief lawyer, the Moscow Times reported.
Foreigners “have nothing to do with our symbolism,” he added.
Solovyov said his comrades would appeal to Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev to ensure “protection of our symbols, including the red star — the symbol of victory that appears on our military flags.”
Red stars are featured in the logos of several prominent Western companies, including Macy’s, Heineken beer and Italy’s San Pellegrino mineral water.
Most of the firms predate the Communist Party, an inconvenient fact that leaves the Russians unmoved.
Solovyov said Russian companies can use the red stars — but only if they do not “intentionally distort [it] or use in an incorrect form.” But he did not specify what would constitute the correct or incorrect use of a red-star logo.
