Brewery news USA: MillerCoors’ plan to close North Carolina brewery investigated by state authorities
North Carolina Attorney General Roy Cooper spoke at a Teamsters rally outside of the MillerCoors brewery in Eden, N.C., on March 31.

MillerCoors announced plans to close the Eden brewery in September 2015, just two days before merger talks between AB InBev and SABMiller became public. SABMiller and Molson Coors are co-owners of MillerCoors.

The Eden brewery is a large and efficient facility that accounts for approximately 12.5 percent of MillerCoors' beer production and nearly 4 percent of the entire U.S. beer market. The Teamsters believe that the timing of the closure announcement was not accidental, and the closure, if it takes place, may lead to higher beer prices.

At the rally, Cooper indicated that North Carolina is investigating the decision to close the brewery. He stated that his office has sent investigative demands and set up meetings with the companies involved. He also indicated that the state is working with the U.S. Department of Justice, which is overseeing the antitrust investigation of the AB InBev/SABMiller merger.

"This shutdown will be devastating for the brewery workers, their families and our whole community," said Vernon Gammon, Secretary-Treasurer of Teamsters Local 391, which represents the Eden brewery employees.

Cooper echoed the Teamsters' concern about job losses.

"This community ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, FL: 7venth Sun Brewery to expand to central Tampa and increase production
Justin Stange and Devon Kreps’ success at Dunedin’s 7venth Sun Brewery gave them the courage — and finances — to expand to central Tampa, where they plan to increase production, Suncoast News reported on March 31.

Since 2012, 7venth Sun Brewery has poured its beers in a 1,000-square-foot location at 1012 Broadway, a place where it can be hard to find a parking spot and even harder to find a barstool on a Saturday night.

“We definitely get busy,” said 7venth Sun co-owner Devon Kreps.

Thanks to the steady flow of thirsty customers, 7venth Sun soon will expand to Tampa. But don’t worry; the Dunedin location isn’t going anywhere. Kreps and co-owner Justin Stange said 7venth Sun’s popularity in Dunedin allowed them to expand to their new location in central Tampa.

“Our success in Dunedin has helped our growth 100 percent,” Stange said.

It’s no secret that the original 7venth Sun can handle just a handful of customers in its tap room, but that hasn’t prevented it from establishing a solid reputation around town for its “farmhouse brewing” techniques.

Kreps has a degree in fermentation science she received from Oregon State University before working at Anheuser-Busch and then Sweetwater Brewery in Georgia, where she teamed with ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, NV: Lake Tahoe Brewing closing locations throughout Nevada amid legal troubles
In the last two months, Lake Tahoe Brewing Co.'s four locations in Carson City, Truckee, Fernley and Reno closed or never opened. What would've been the region's largest locally-owned beer franchise fizzled down to nothing after a series of legal troubles flattened the brand, Reno Gazette Journal reported on March 31.

Brewery owner, Michael Candelario, said he is wrapping up closure of the final Fourth Street location that he planned to open as a tap house and largest barrel-aging facility in the region. In Carson City, the brewery represented the third brewery to close in the same downtown location since Doppelgangers and High Sierra Brewing Co. shuttered in 2011 and 2014 respectively.

The troubles for Lake Tahoe Brewing started in February when Lake Tahoe Brewing was evicted from its downtown Carson City location.

Candelario alleges a broken brewery system prevented the brewery from making beer, causing the brewery to make less money. What started out as a temporary closure to address the malfunction ended with a permanent closure and subsequent closure of remaining brewpubs and tap houses.

In an interview on March 29, Candelario said his brewery fell into trouble because of an aggressive growth plan and not receiving reimbursements he expected for equipment ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, FL: Reprise Brewing to launch on April 9 as Osceola County’s first microbrewery

Brewery news USA, CO: River North Brewery returns to Denver with new digs and quest for brewing
Less than six months after exile from its original home – thanks to Denver’s insatiable real estate development – River North Brewery returns with new digs and a quest for vengeance…or just brewing, Brewbound.com reports.

On Saturday, April 2nd, the brewery will open its new expanded facility at 6021 Washington Street, Unit A in Denver. At close to 9,000 square feet, the new location is double the size of the original. It includes a new brewhouse, more tanks, and a larger taproom.

At noon on April 2nd, River North will kick off its Grand Reopening Party with both staple and rare beers from throughout its history, food trucks and tours of the new brewery. On Saturday, April 2nd, the brewery will be open from noon to 10pm, and on Sunday, April 3rd, noon to 7pm.

“This represents the culmination of an unbelievable amount of hard work from our team,” Founder and Brewer Matt Hess said. “We can now brew more and better beer than ever before. We’ll have the flexibility to push the boundaries of styles and techniques far beyond our previous endeavors. Not to mention, we’ll be able to host many more friends in our taproom. We’re ready and, quite frankly, we’re ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, LA: Cottonport Brewing ready for opening on April 2
Cottonport Brewing, 5946 Horseshoe Lake Road, Sterlington, will hold a grand opening event, starting at 4:30 p.m. Saturday, April 2, Monroe News Star reports.

The facilities offer a taproom with 12 beers and an outdoor beer garden with an area for bands to play outside. The kitchen has a sliding door that can be opened for customers to watch brewing in process. A large, computerized brewing machine along the back wall is the center of activity.

William Cook, Troy DuGuay Sr. and Troy DuGuay II partnered on the business more than a year ago with a desire to create a casual beer drinking experience.

"It's been a long time in the making," Cook said. "Now everyone can taste what we've been brewing."

Cottonport Brewing focuses on Prohibition-era brews with a lower alcohol content and avoids wheat brews. They also have crafted several non-alcoholic soda options.

Cook said many of their own creations are on tap, including:

Prohibition Cream Ale 21st Amendment Alt Broken Levee Gateway IPA Red A** Black Water Dry Stout Saison Deloutre Cotton Top Kolsch

The other taps feature other Louisiana craft beers.

Plans include 12 taps of house beer, a full kitchen and patio space.

The brewpub and winery are both at 3946 Broadway. The brewery took over the front of the building from a former daycare.

Barley news Russia: Barley export in February 2016 smaller than a year ago
Russia exported 261.7 thousand tonnes of barley in February 2016, which was 36% lower than in February 2015 (410.2 thousand tonnes), UkrAgroConsult reported on March 31.

The pace of barley exports from Russia in the current marketing year is nearly 4% lower than last season.

Since the beginning of 2015/16 MY, barley exports reached 3.599 mln tonnes compared to 3.744 mln tonnes during the same period in season 2014/15.

UkrAgroConsult estimates that the nation’s barley export capacity has been implemented by 86%. The analysts expect 20% exports reduction in the current season in comparison to season 2014/15 due to the decrease of barley production in Russia in 2015.

Barley news Ukraine: Barley sown on 954 thousand ha as of March 31
Ukrainian farmers had sown 1.27 million hectares of early spring grain or 50 percent of the initial area as of March 31, the agriculture ministry said on March 31.

The area included 954,000 hectares of spring barley, 90,000 hectares of wheat and 132,400 hectares of peas, the ministry said in a report.

The ministry said the spring grains, mostly maize and barley, could eventually cover about 7.5 million hectares, including 2.5 million hectares of early spring crops.

Analyst UkrAgroConsult said last month that Ukraine's grain harvest was likely to fall 10 percent to 52.2 million metric tons in 2016 due to a sharp drop in winter wheat output caused by poor weather during sowing.

The wheat harvest is likely to fall to 17.3 million metric tons this year from 24.8 million in 2015, the consultancy said.

Brewery news India: Vijay Mallya may offer his stake in United Breweries to Heineken to achieve settlement with lenders of Kingfisher Airlines
Troubled tycoon Vijay Mallya may offer his shares in United Breweries (UBL) to partner and Dutch beer giant Heineken to generate cash for a possible settlement with lenders of the defunct Kingfisher Airlines, the Times of India reported on March 31.

If the lenders respond positively, the latest development offers Heineken a clear opportunity to gain controlling ownership of UBL, the largest domestic brewer and the last big Indian company which Mallya helms.

Mallya's counsel made an offer before the Supreme Court to pay Rs 4,000 crore to settle with a consortium of banks fighting to recover unpaid loans. The proposal rests heavily on his ability to divest shares in UBL, in which Heineken owns nearly 44% while Mallya's holding is slightly above 32%.

"This offer will be met from two sources — shares in UBL and a residual stake in United Spirits. Mallya will have to offer shares to Heineken as the latter has pre-emptive rights on them," said a source close to Mallya on condition of anonymity.

The Supreme Court, depending on the response from the banks, will have to lift a lower court freeze on Mallya and his Indian investment company UB Holdings selling assets, the source added.
