Brewery news USA, NJ: The Alementary already brewing in Hackensack
It took more than a year, but the owners of the second production brewery in Bergen County have started making beer, NJ.com reported on March 2.

The Alementary received a state brewery license Feb. 17, and owners Blake Crawford, 43, and Michael Roosevelt, 38, set to work on their first beers that weekend.

They closed on their Voorhis Avenue, Hackensack property Feb. 5, 2015, and it took more than a year to clear local, state and federal regulatory hurdles. The Roosevelt and head brewer John Henry stumbled on the building in 2014.

"It was a gray, cinder-block building completely overcome by weeds, completely unmaintained for a long time," Crawford said.

"It was smelly," Roosevelt said. "But it was perfect."

It was a place only a brewer could appreciate: A brick rectangle with an 85-foot wooden beam running the length of the building. The beam now hangs over the bar, and the cinder blocks are mostly covered over with wood finishing.

With the building, Alementary had cleared one of the biggest hurdles for would-be brewers.

"Finding the right property in the right town is probably the hardest thing," Roosevelt said. "If you find a building and the town wants you there, for me that's at least 60 percent ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, GA: Riverwatch Brewery ready to start brewing its first batch in Augusta
The first brewery in Augusta since before the Prohibition is ready for business. Riverwatch Brewery got its business license approved on March 3 and owners are ready to start brewing their very first batch of beer, WTVM reported.

"It's been a struggle for us to get here and to see the light at the end of the tunnel to be brewing, it just makes me so happy," said Anne Sloan.

A rewarding feeling for owners who were originally told they couldn't make it happen.

"We've been told that the commission will never allow a brewery," said Brey Sloan. "So I thought I was going to have a fight on my hands so we went early and they were like 'Yeah, that's fine.' So we were out a little early than we expected to be."

Eleven and a half months later, here's the building on 5th Street at Laney Walker Boulevard. And Augustans appear prepared to welcome Riverwatch brewery with open arms.

"The Facebook page has grown by leaps and bounds," said Brey. "We're over 1,200 now and I haven't even made any beer yet. So, that's a good sign. There's a lot of interest here in Augusta for the brewery."

Riverwatch Brewery is a production ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, IN: Terre Haute Brewing Company reopening in Terre Haute
Indiana’s first craft brewery is reopening just in time for the Indiana’s Bicentennial, WISH-TV reported on March 2.

Terre Haute Brewing Company first opened in 1837 and stayed in production for over 100 years.

Production stopped during Prohibition but picked up again before closing its doors for good in 1959.

Now a group of a beer lovers are bringing the brewery back to its roots, and expanding on them.

“We’re going pretty big,” said Jeffrey Hock, the new owner of Terre Haute Brewing Company. “We’re able to make 600 gallons at a time.”

The location at Swan and South 9th Streets has been dry for 57 years.

Hock and his business partners bought the 12,000 square foot building back in June 2015, and every day since they’ve been restoring it back to its glory days. Back in the late 1800s it was the 7th largest brewery in the country and had 900 employees.

“It was my imagination. I walked in, it was a mess in here and it really took a lot of vision to see what we’re going to do,” said Hock.

The restoration is coming at a time when competition has never been higher. There are over 120 craft breweries in Indiana, nearly half of them ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, MI & PA & OH: Short’s Brewing Company announces updated Midwest distribution plans
Short’s Brewing Company of Bellaire, MI, announces updated Midwest distribution plans. In January, the company announced it would distribute Short’s brews and Starcut Ciders outside of their home state, Michigan, for the first time. Initial distribution outside Michigan began with eastern Pennsylvania in February 2016. This area will extend to Pittsburgh beginning March 19. Wilson-McGinley, a wholesale distribution company established in the 1950s and located in the historic Lawrenceville neighborhood, will be representing Short’s in the Pittsburgh area.

The launch of Short’s Brewing and Starcut Ciders in Illinois will be complete the week of March 6, and will be followed by distribution in Indiana and Ohio, beginning March 19.

Short’s has partnered with Cavalier Distributing to represent their brands in Indiana and Ohio. Cavalier was established in 1992 by Founder/President George Fisher, and is one of the only distributors in the country with a portfolio that is exclusively American craft beverages and imports. They employ more than 260 employees throughout their territories.

“For many years, six-packs of Short’s have migrated south with vacationing Hoosiers and Buckeyes. Cavalier Distributing is excited to bring Short’s into Ohio and Indiana and help people catch up with their fantastic beers from Michigan,” said Cavalier Founder/President George Fisher.

Brewery news USA, CA: Twisted Manzanita Ales & Spirits no longer making beer
A Santee brewery — known in its six-year history as Manzanita Brewing, Twisted Manzanita Brewing, Twisted Manzanita Ales and Twisted Manzanita Ales & Spirits — is no longer making beer, The San Diego Union-Tribune reported on March 3.

While the company’s distillery remains in business, the brewery stopped making beer this week, days after its Pacific Beach tasting room closed. The owner, Jeff Trevaskis, informed his staff of the news and their impending layoffs in an email on March 2.

“There were a lot of good people that worked there,” said John Olsen, the brewery’s vice president of business development. “They were passionate about the craft world. It’s sad to see that they are going to have to move on.”

Olsen estimated that the brewery had fewer than 15 full-time employment positions.

The closure took many of Twisted Manzanita’s fans by surprise. The company’s website makes no reference to any changes, and is still accepting reservations for $25 brewery tours into August.

On Facebook, Twisted Manzanita advertised beer sales and encouraged people to drop in for “one of our last Thirsty Thursdays!”

Typical reader reaction: “??”

“Come celebrate the memories,” the company responded. “Under new ownership.”

In recent weeks, it seemed that the company had decided to emphasize ...More info on site

Brewery news Singapore: Demand for local craft beer not so strong yet
CRAFT Singapore, the city-state's first-ever craft beer festival, launches on March 4 in hopes of luring lager and ale guzzlers to more independent fare, SNCB reported.

The festival comes on the heels of a global boom in craft breweries, also referred to as microbreweries, that has seen larger players acknowledging the competition. Anheuser-Busch InBev, the world's largest brewer, announced purchases of three craft brewers in the month of December alone.

Microbreweries are broadly classified as small, independent operations producing limited volumes. In the U.S., annual production for an individual craft brewer is capped at 6 million barrels or less.

Singapore is home to around a dozen microbreweries, with four alone opening last year, Charles Guerrier, founder of CRAFT Singapore, told CNBC.

But the island nation's most popular beer—in term of total volume sales—still remains Tiger, made by Heineken-owned Asia-Pacific Breweries (APB), according to Euromonitor.

Indeed, craft accounts for only around 2 percent of Singapore's beer market share, noted Winston Kwang, owner of Beerstyle Distribution, a local company specializing in the import of American craft beers.

Industry observers highlighted a few factors behind the lower volumes.

"We're not yet at the stage where there's strong demand for local craft beer. Unlike the U.K., where people get very territorial ...More info on site

Brewery news Malaysia: Guinness Anchor Berhad concerned by hike in excise duties for beer and stout
Guinness Anchor Berhad (GAB) expressed concern that a hike in excise duties for beer and stout may drive up demand for illicit alcohol, malaysiakini.com reported on March 2.

"We are also concerned that the demand for illicit and unregulated alcohol products may increase," GAB managing director Hans Essaadi said in a statement.

He also said the hike would make their business harder amid an economy that is already bearing down on businesses and consumers,

"The state of the economy is having a significant impact on businesses and consumers and the latest increase in excise duty on beer and stout will make the environment more challenging to our industry," Essaadi said.

GAB, he said, will make price adjustments to its products in line with the new tax structure.

The Malay Mail on March 2 reported that excise duties for beer and stout were expected to go up by 10 percent. The current rate is 10 percent.

Malaysia has the third highest tax on alcohol worldwide behind Norway and Singapore.

Brewery news Malawi: SABMiller’s Chibuku plant ordered to suspend production
A health inspection at the Lilongwe plant of SABMiller’s unit has prompted Malawi to suspend Chibuku beer production and operations by Chibuku Products Limited as the country intensifies a crackdown on products deemed unfit for human consumption, Independent Online reported on March 3.

Chibuku is an opaque beer product manufactured from sorghum by SABMiller in most of its African markets.

SABMiller recently developed a longer shelf variant of the product, giving it extra muscle in an African market where illegal and other traditional brews still have demand.

But in Malawi, hygienic concerns have forced the Malawi Bureau of Standards to shut down operations at Chibuku Products Limited, according to the standard board’s director-general.

Chibuku Products Limited is owned by Malawi Breweries, in which SABMiller has an interest. The Malawi Bureau of Standards said it had “with immediate effect suspended production and distribution of Chibuku shake-shake opaque beer for Lilongwe plant due to non-compliance with hygiene standard”.

Chibuku Products Limited was due to make a statement on the issue by the time of writing. However, Facebook users on the company’s page queried “how such a big company” like Chibuku had failed to meet hygiene standards.

The director-general of the standards body said the plant would be ...More info on site

Brewery news South Africa: COSATU vows to fight SABMiller takeover unless AB InBev guarantees no job will be lost
The Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU) has vowed to fight the pending merger between SABMiller PLC, Gutsche Family Investments and Coca-Cola unless a guarantee is made that no jobs would be lost, Iol.co.za reported on March 2.

The federation said it was worried about the potential devastating impact the merger would have on jobs, small businesses and the economy at large.

In its letter requesting to make presentations to the Competition Tribunal which is handling the proposed transaction, COSATU appealed with the entity and the Competition Commission to ensure that there was a binding contract protecting workers.

“The Competition Commission has already identified job losses as a big concern in its investigation. While we support its suggestion that conditions be put before any decision to approve the merger; we feel strongly that these proposed conditions are still inadequate,” said COSATU spokesman, Sizwe Pamla in a statement.

SABMiller announced last year it had accepted a takeover bid by the world’s largest brewer takeover bid by Anheuser-Busch InBev (AB InBev).

If approved, the deal would be one of the largest mergers in corporate history.

COSATU said given the 34% expanded unemployment rate in the country and the mass job losses witnessed in sectors such as mining ...More info on site
