The continued release of novel hop varieties with uniquely identifiable organoleptic characters is evidence that the flavour potential of hops has not been fully explored. Plus, the genetic basis of hop organoleptic chemistry is relatively poorly understood. A mapping cross containing 166 genotypes has been established into two replicated field trials (Tasmania and Victoria, Australia), separated by about 5 degrees latitude. To date we have collected two years of data on various parameters. Such data allows analysis of genetic variation and genotype by site interactions. However, the ultimate aim for the study is to obtain an extended chemical phenotype of hop flavour volatiles, polyphenols, glycosides, laboratory scale beer volatile SPME profiles, and to integrate this with organoleptic data. Successful completion of this hop flavoromics study will allow the identification of quantitative trait loci (QTL) in hop directly associated with beer organoleptic traits.

Brewery news USA: Brewers eager for millennials' attention
The millennials' love for alcoholic beverages has a huge impact on the market. With their high alcohol consumption, alcoholic drinks company are stepping up their game to boost their sales. Wineries and spirit drink manufacturers are rejoicing as their sales continually increased. As for the beer companies, however, reports claim that beer sales are continually decreasing over the past years, Parent Herald reported on February 19.

The millennial generation paved the way for economic progress as they tend to strive for success and value accomplishment. They may be young professionals, but millennials also make sure to have a lot of time for fun and recreation. Most of them would prefer to go out and party, while some would opt for a more laid back vibe. One of the things that gave them the edge, however, is their capacity to consume alcohol.

Anheuser-Busch, Miller Coors, and Heineken were greatly affected by the sales' decrease based on the report released by Morgan Stanley, according to Business Insider. "Overall beer consumption trends remain weak, and it appears millennials are increasingly turning to other alcoholic beverages," Coors said.

Brewery news USA, GA: Creature Comforts Brewing Company expanding brewing operations in Athens
Creature Comforts Brewing Company of Athens, GA is expanding its brewing operations with the addition of four new 120-bbl fermenters and one 120-bbl brite tank, Brewbound.com reported on February 19.

Since opening in 2014, the brewery has invested heavily back into operations, with more than $1.25 million dollars dedicated to new production, packaging, and lab equipment. This expansion will allow the brewery to gradually increase brewing production from its current annual capacity of 15,000-bbls up to 23,000-bbls.

With the addition of the new tanks, the brewery anticipates an increase of production output to reach 18,000-bbls for 2016. Looking down the pipeline, the team plans to add a fourth brewhouse vessel later in 2016, with a goal to brew at a maximum available capacity of 28,000-bbls by 2017. The current jump in production will allow Creature Comforts to yield more consistent distribution to its existing markets, with no plans to expand the sales footprint beyond Athens and Atlanta market at this time.

In addition to the production increase, this expansion will also result in the creation of new jobs for the company. The Creature Comforts team is immediately adding two new full-time brewer positions, and additional part-time packaging positions.

Brewery news USA, CA & RI: Coronado Brewing’s award-winning beers to become available in Rhode Island in the spring
Coronado Brewing’s award-winning beers are expanding in the east coast to include Rhode Island, arriving on draft and introducing packaged beer in the spring. Coronado Brewing’s Core Series will be offered including Islander IPA, Orange Avenue Wit, Mermaid’s Red, as well as releases of seasonal Crown Series favorites such as Sock Knocker and 20th Anniversary Ale, Brewbound.com reported on February 19.

Coronado has partnered with McLaughlin & Moran, Inc. of Cranston, R.I. who will be distributing Coronado’s beers throughout the entire state. “We’re honored to partner with Coronado Brewing and bring its West Coast-style beers to Rhode Island,” said Terry Moran, President of McLaughlin & Moran. “With their approachable beers and wide range of portfolio, we feel their coastal vibe will translate well in the market.”

Brewery news USA, IN: Thomas Stieglitz Brewing about a month away from opening in Goshen
Goshen’s third brewery is about a month away from opening, according to one of the owners cited by Goshen News on February 20.

Jeff Thomas, co-owner, said last week that there is no hard deadline to open Thomas Stieglitz Brewing in the Goshen Innovation Center building at 211 N. Fifth St. Gary Stieglitz, his wife Laura, and Thomas’ wife Margaret, are the other co-owners.

The space was most recently used as The Local art gallery to display works by local artists. He said depending on how far along the owners are in the renovation process, the opening might be a “big to do” or a soft opening.

The brewery is the next step in his and Stieglitz’s interest in brewing all types of beers. Thomas said his own hobby of brewing beer grew slowly after he received a gift.

“Believe it or not, nine or 10 years ago my wife bought me a brewing kit and it has spun off from there,” he said. “My grandfather was a home brewer and I kind of picked it up and stayed with it.”

Brewery news USA, WI: Good City Brewing LLC to debut in Milwaukee this year
The first brewery on Milwaukee's east side is joining five other microbreweries that plan to debut in 2016, Milwaukee Business Journal reported on February 22.

Good City Brewing LLC signed a lease and will begin construction to convert the former Crank Daddy's Bicycle Works space at 2108 N. Farwell Ave. into a production brewery.

The 6,600-square-foot space will house a 17-barrel brewhouse capable of producing a maximum of 10,000 barrels per year. Co-founder David Dupee of crowdfunding platform CraftFund, said the brewery will start out at about 2,000 barrels per year, under leadership of brewmaster and co-founder Andy Jones.

The brewery, like the other five new microbreweries opening in Milwaukee this year, will look to sell its beer out of the taproom and through distribution to other bars and retailers. The added volume will help grow Milwaukee's reputation as a beer destination, but will also increase competition for tap handle and shelf space in the region.

Good City raised the funds for the project, about $1.4 million in total, through a private offering and an SBA loan facilitated by Alterra Bank, Dupee said.

Brewery news USA, IL: Anheuser-Busch InBev buying the Chicago brewpub where Goose Island was founded
Anheuser-Busch InBev, which has been on a bit of a craft-brew buying spree, is buying the Chicago brewpub where Goose Island was founded, BizJournals.com reported on February 22.

The brewpub was not included in AB InBev's 2011 purchase of Fulton Street Brewery LLC, Goose Island's parent company, for $38.8 million.

Now Goose Island founder John Hall is selling the brewpub to Fulton Street, the Chicago Tribune reports. Terms of the deal, expected to close in 60 days, weren't disclosed.

AB InBev didn't have much interest in the brewpub in 2011, which it couldn't buy under Illinois law at the time, anyway, Hall told the newspaper. Now, to comply with Illinois law, the brewpub will be reclassified as a taproom subsidiary of the company's Fulton Street production brewery and no longer will be able to sell wine or spirits, the Tribune reports.

The brewpub's kitchen will remain open, and it will collaborate more with the Fulton Street production brewery, officials said.

Brewery news USA, TN & AR: Memphis-based Wiseacre Brewing Co. to start selling its beers in Arkansas next month
Another Southern brewery will expand its distribution reach to Arkansas next month, The Fayetteville Flyer reported on February 23.

Memphis-based Wiseacre Brewing Co. will cross the river in early March, company officials confirmed earlier this month.

Kellan Bartosch, one of Wiseacre’s two founders, said the initial plan is to distribute the brewery’s four year-round beers: Ananda, an India Pale Ale packed with Centennial and Cascade hops; Gotta Get Up To Get Down, a coffee milk stout brewed with a rare variety of Ethiopian coffee; Tiny Bomb: An American version of a Czech Pilsener brewed with Memphis’ famed Artesian well water; and Neon Brown, a light American brown ale brewed with brown sugar, oatmeal, and chocolate malt.

Bartsch said a rotating variety of canned seasonal beers are also planned, with some rare specialty beers arriving from time to time on draft and in 22oz bottles.

Wiseacre has expanded its capacity twice in the past two years. An increase of 20 employees and a bump in production facility space in 2014 was followed by four new 80-barrel fermentation tanks last summer in preparation for the company’s plans to enter the Chicago craft beer market.

The continued growth of the UK craft beer market will lead to deals being struck between key players in the year ahead according to Scotland’s largest independent firm of chartered accountants and business advisers, Scotland Food and Drink reported on February 22.

Adam Hardie, Head of Food & Drink at Johnston Carmichael, whose firm works with a number of well-known craft beer brands including Stewart Brewing, Edinburgh Beer Factory and Speyside, spoke ahead of Craft Beer Rising. The annual industry event gives brewers the chance to meet potential trade buyers, and will be held in London later this month (26 – 27 February).

Hardie predicts continued growth with the launch of new breweries and consolidation across the sector in the coming year. “Consolidation is undoubtedly here. We are seeing, and will continue to see, big players with more investment behind them operating in the British craft brewing market. Last year Camden Brewing sold to AB InBev for £85 million which got everybody’s attention due to the high price achieved, whilst in Scotland Johnston Carmichael were recently involved in the sale of Broughton Ales.”

“The Vietnamese love their beer, there’s no doubt about it. They’ve got an amazing beer culture,” says Sean Symons, a 42-year-old Australian and one of the first, if not the first, expat brewers to make craft beer here commercially, The Wall Street Journal reported on February 24.

They do indeed love their beer, consuming roughly 3.4 billion litres (nearly 900 million gallons) of it in 2015; it makes up about 98% of the country’s alcoholic drinks industry. Per capita consumption doubled between 2005 and 2011, thanks to Vietnam’s booming economy and the numbers reaching drinking age annually: about 1 million people.

Something new is filtering into this powerhouse market though: craft beer.

The vast majority of beer in Vietnam is cheap (the famous homemade bia hoi or fresh beer costs 22 American cents); it’s easy to drink in a hot climate (often served over ice); and it’s possible to drink a lot of it (3-5% alcohol content). “The Vietnamese have lived for so many decades with just lagers,” says Vietnam-based, Belgian native, beer-ingredient importer Gert Keersmaekers, 44. “This new middle class wants new things.”

Indian beer makers have demanded that all the state governments should delink the beverage from hard alcoholic liquors as far as levying taxes is concerned, New Indian Express reported on February 22.

All India Brewers Association Director-General Shobhan Roy said the current policies pertaining to alco-bev sector in India are driving people towards consumption of hard spirits.

"There is a strong need to delink beer from hard spirits and rationalisation of taxes as per actual alcohol content to bring a slow but definite change in consumption pattern. Just like other parts of the world, the emphasis will then shift to not only controlling consumption but to reducing intake of more hard spirits," Roy said in a statement.

Additionally, the reach of low alcoholic beverages needs to improve keeping social objectives in mind and it is imperative to create better retail environment with focus on having beer only at outlets/restaurants and rationalise the number of outlets to commensurate with population, he said.

Brewery news Kenya: Court orders Heineken not to terminate contract with three distributors until the case is heard and determined
A court has ordered Dutch brewer, Heineken, not to terminate a contract with three companies based in Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania, Standard Media reported on February 23.

High Court Judge Erick Ogola ruled on February 22 that the firm should not terminate the deal until the case filed by Kenya's Maxam Limited, Uganda's Modern Lane Limited and Tanzania's Olepasu Limited is heard and determined.

"Pending the hearing and determination of this application, the defendants or any other person acting on their instructions are hereby restrained by an injunction from appointing any distributor for the distribution of the Heineken beer brand in Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania, being the business currently carried out by the applicants," Justice Ogola ordered.

The three contractors sued the beer maker, arguing it had no authority to cancel their licences and that it would affect their businesses. In a case filed by lawyer Phillip Nyachoti, the distributors argued that allowing the beer maker to terminate their contracts would also affect other companies from whom they have leased warehouses, lorries for transportation and sub-distributors to move the import products.

Barley news Australia: New barley variety Alestar could offer good option for growers and maltsters in coming years
A new barley designed for the malting market could offer a good option for Australian growers in coming years, Weekly Times Now reported on February 21.

Alestar, a barley variety which will be bulked up this year and be released extensively next year, has yield benefits over current varieties and is less likely to fall over, or lodge, than some other varieties.

That’s according to Elders seed manager Chris Willis.

Elders is marketing the new variety that, Mr Willis said, would be submitted to Barley Australia’s malting accreditation process next year, which is recognised as the required standard to determine which new barley varieties can be used for malting.

“We plan to put Alestar into the malting process. We are doing samples with the malting companies, and we aim to enter this in the barley malting accreditation process next year,” he said.

Mr Willis said in National Variety Trials and also their own company trials Alestar performed well, despite the dry season last year.

“It went well in the high rainfall region, the line has been tested for three to four years in that area,” he said.

Craft beer may not be making the sort of waves in Malaysia that it is in the United States, but there is a growing market and demand for craft beers in the country, Star2.com reported.

Where Malaysians used to only get beers from the two major breweries – Guinness Anchor Berhad and Carlsberg Malaysia, there is now a much bigger selection of beers from all over the world available in craft beer outlets such as Taps Beer Bar, The Great Beer Bar, Ales & Lagers, and Messrs Barley, Malt & Hops.

The number of Malaysians drinking craft beer has increased, thanks in part to events like The Better Beer Festival 2015, held at Taps Beer Bar.

“It’s hard to define what ‘craft beers’ are these days.
