GENOMIC STUDIES IN HOPS
ABSTRACT
Breeding hop varieties for higher yield, disease
resistance and improved brewing characteristics is a
lengthy and expensive process. Use of new genomic
tools enables greater precision in selection as well
as reduced dependence upon lengthy phenotypic
evaluations. This research group performed genomic
studies in hops that looked at multiple quantitative
traits to identify potential molecular markers for use
in selection. Quantitative trait loci (QTL) studies
focused upon the identification of SNP markers linked
to downy mildew resistance. Genome-wide association
studies (GWAS) looked for markers linked to yield,
alpha and beta acid levels, cohumulone levels, hop
storageability, oil amounts, and levels of caryophyllene,
limonene, humulene and myrcene. They were successful
in identifying a total of 98 SNP markers as significantly
associated with one of the 10 traits. An additional
outcome of this study was the identification of a set of
7 SNPs that effectively differentiated all 116 varieties.

USA, MA: The Cape’s third and newest brewery to open in early summer

The Cape’s third and newest brewery will open in early summer in the Jailhouse Tavern, with a little help from the peninsula’s oldest maker of beer, Cape Cod Times reported on February 14.
Cape Cod Beer in Hyannis has sold some its tanks to the Jailhouse, where they will be the main equipment for a brewpub. Cape Cod Beer co-owner Beth Marcus said the deal involved the 15-barrel, three-vessel brewhouse and three 15-barrel fermenters. Each fermenter can hold about 500 gallons of beer, she said.
“We’ve been talking about it (starting a brewpub) for a little over five years,” Jailhouse co-owner Mike McNamara said.
The restaurant on West Road has been operating as the Old Jailhouse Tavern since 1984, and incorporates the iron cell bars that, back in Prohibition days, the town constable put in a bedroom of his home to hold prisoners overnight on weekends, according to the business’s website.
McNamara and partner Mark Powers bought the restaurant about three years ago, dropped “Old” from the name, and are renovating the building. The brewpub will be located where a carport once stood.
“We got some nice, industrial-looking windows (for the brewing area), … getting concrete poured for floors,” McNamara said.

USA, PA: Brewery slated to open at The Millworks in Harrisburg
|
A 2,000-square foot brewery is slated to open this spring at The Millworks, a restaurant, bar and art gallery in Harrisburg's midtown district, Wift.org reported on February 12.
The brewery, which will be visible to the public, will use a 15-barrel system to create draughts featured on tap at the bar, according to a news release.
Jeff Musselman, whose resume includes cider maker at Hauser Estate Winery and lead brewer at Tröegs Brewing Company and Weyerbacher Brewing Company, will take on the role of Brew Master.
Since opening at 340 Verbeke St., Harrisburg last spring, The Millworks has become a destination for arts, culture and food, focusing on local, seasonal ingredients.
During dine-in hours, customers can explore The Millworks' three art galleries and 18 in-house artist studios and speak with artists about how they create their works.
The restaurant also offers an open-air biergarten courtyard, a rooftop terrace overlooking the city and free on-site parking.

USA, OH: HiHO Brewing co. scheduled to launch this fall in Cuyahoga Falls
|
The continued emphasis on craft beer in Cuyahoga Falls continues to grow, with the impish-sounding HiHO Brewing Co. scheduled to open this fall on Front Street, Cleveland.com reported on February 12.
The area is booming with Craft Beer Bar and its 30 taps, The Office's second location with more than a dozen craft beers and others. Now, Jon and Ali Hovan are adding to the scene with HiHO, which will be located at 1707 Front St.
The leased 12,000-square-foot building is very close to Summit County Metro Parks, and the city put up a parking lot close to the brewery.
The couple had been living in Denver for eight years. They met Hudson and recently moved back to Ohio. Both taught kindergarten through eighth grade – physical education for Jon, art for Ali.
But the brewing bug caught Jon Hovan, who started home brewing in college and became passionate about it in Denver. Colorado has upwards of 250 breweries, third most in the nation.
"We're really passionate about it," he said. "We're putting 100 percent into it. We're going to make it work."

Canada, AB: Grain Bin Brewing opens in Grand Prairie, Alberta

The first of two microbreweries planned for Grand Prairie, Alberta has opened with a unique business model, Canadian Beer News reported on February 16.
Like most small breweries, Grain Bin Brewing has several core brands – such as Participant Special Bitter and Smoky Flats Dunkel Weizen – that are available on draught at local bars and pubs, and in growlers at the brewery. But they also offer a number of custom brewing services, including making exclusive house beers for licencees, and one-off beers for events such as weddings, parties, and charity events.
In addition, the brewery will be brewing a series of beers under the Democracy! banner that will be developed based on input from customers and released in limited runs of bottles or growlers. Some especially small-run beers will be released exclusively to those who contributed to the crowdfunding campaign that was run late last year.
Grain Bin beers are currently available at local establishments including The Den Pub & Carvery, and via growler fills at the brewery.

The middle is an increasingly tough place to be in the beer business. With that in mind, two of the US craft beer's best-known mid-sized breweries are joining forces, CNBC reported on February 16.
Downingtown, Pennsylvania-based Victory Brewing Company and Lakewood, New York-based Southern Tier Brewing are forming an alliance that will operate under parent company Artisanal Brewing Ventures.
"The craft beer community is at its most critical moment since its inception as larger brewing corporations have bought into our grassroots movement, irrevocably changing the marketplace," Bill Covaleski, founder and brewmaster of Victory Brewing, said in a statement. "Like-minded brewers such as Victory and Southern Tier can preserve our character, culture and products by banding together."
Under the new arrangement, the two breweries will operate independently but combine marketing, sales and distribution forces to increase scale and expand distributor and retail partnerships.
A Victory and Southern Tier combination would account for more than 250,000 barrels based on 2015 production volume, placing it among the top 15 largest craft brewers in the United States as ranked by the Brewers Association.
In 2014, the latest ranking by the Brewers Association, Victory Brewing was the 29th largest craft brewer and Southern Tier ranked 35th in size.

USA, MI: Warren-based Kuhnhenn Brewing Company sets opening date

The long-awaited opening date for Warren-based Kuhnhenn Brewing Company’s new location in Clinton Township has been set, The Macomb Daily reported on February 15.
The family-owned craft brewery -- located at 36000 Groesbeck, north of 15 Mile Road -- will officially open its doors to the public on Monday, Feb. 29 at 11 a.m.
Brothers Bret and Eric Kuhnhenn have worked for more than two years to convert and expand the closed Evergreen Home & Garden Center into a 45,000-square-foot state-of-the-art bottling facility and tasting room.
Jon Piepenbrok, vice president of marketing and sales, said the Kuhnhenn crew is “extremely excited” to open their doors to the public.
“We hope to elevate the Groesbeck corridor by becoming a new destination spot, and are continuing to add to the growing craft beer culture in Macomb County,” Piebenbrok said.
Clinton Township Supervisor Robert Cannon said the craft brewery will be an asset to the community. “These microbreweries have become very popular in recent years, and the Kuhnhenns are at the top of their game,” Cannon said. “You’re going to love the look. The interior is absolutely stunning.”

USA, KY: Wooden Cask Brewing Company owners hoping to open in Newport by June or July

Ever since he sold his share of Rivertown Brewery back in the fall of 2014, Randy Schiltz has been working on plans to start another brewery, Cincinnati.com reported on February 12.
He and his wife, Karen, are now moving forward with those plans. They hope to open Wooden Cask Brewing Company at 629 York St. in Newport by June or July.
Named for the traditional method of serving beer, Wooden Cask will be a production brewery with a tap room. "Traditional" is how the Schiltzs hope to set themselves apart in the growing local craft beer industry. Randy Schiltz said the new brewery's primary focus will be on traditional, easy-drinking beers that are a little lower ABV, "beers that people can relate to." He's particularly interested in making some English, Irish and Scottish styles.
That reflects his own taste and background: An English-style bitter got Schiltz interested in craft beer, and it was the first style he made when he started home brewing about 17 years ago. He went on to co-found Rivertown Brewery with Jason Roeper in 2009. Roeper bought Schiltz out in the fall of 2014.

USA, MO: Logboat Brewing Co. invests in expanding its grain silo and production capacity
|
Logboat Brewing Co. employees won’t be hauling 50-pound sacks of malt for long, Columbia Daily Tribune reported on February 13.
The popular brewing company has plans for a major expansion in late spring to add a 60,000 pound grain silo and two more 60-barrel fermenters.
Co-owner Tyson Hunt said he hopes to see production double in the next year thanks to the new equipment coupled with the brewery’s planned expansion into the St. Louis market in April.
The grain silo will sit near the northeast corner of the two-story building at 504 Fay St., Hunt said.
Instead of dumping 50-pound bags of malt into the mill, which Hunt called “back-breaking and time-consuming labor,” brewers will be able to use automated settings on the silo to bring in the right amount of grain.
“They won’t be constantly standing by the mill heaving sacks of grain into it,” he said. “It’s definitely more efficient.”
The brewery has applied for a city permit to pour a concrete slab for the silo, which Logboat plans to install by early April. The company also expects its new fermenters to arrive in April.

China’s microbreweries are on the rise, creating premium drinks out of indigenous flavors for a thirsty nation with a taste for the unusual, Ecns.cn reported on February 17.
Swedish-born Thomas Gaestadius, brewmaster and co-founder of Beijing-based microbrewery Arrow Factory Brewing, works surrounded by stainless steel tanks filled with his latest concoctions, which release a thick and pleasant malty scent.
The small brewing facility next to Liangmahe in eastern Beijing opened to the public in January, serving food and craft beer.
It was only two years ago that Gaestadius and British business partner Will Yorke started brewing on a small scale to supply their sausage restaurant Stuff'd, near the Lama Temple in the Chinese capital.
They now brew 1,000 to 2,000 litres per week, also supplying craft beer to other restaurants in town.
The business partners, who used their own savings to start the brewery, say craft brewing is a demanding business not right for everyone.
"It is an expensive business to set up and it is very labor-intensive," said Gaestadius.
"The necessary equipment can cost 500,000 yuan ($78,000) to 1 million yuan. You also need a lot of space, and getting a commercial venue in downtown Beijing is not cheap, either."

The firm said in October tax on mild beer (lower alcohol content) was raised by 27 percent and strong beer by 32 percent. In November taxes on strong beer was raised by another 29 percent.
Though a reduction in tax on mild beer was announced in November it was quickly reversed again taking the total tax increase up to 70 percent.
While excise tax on strong beer was raised 70 percent, tax on arrack, Sri Lanka's most popular hard alcohol was up only 24 percent.
Tax policy that encourages hard liquor is "unusual and defies rationality" Lion Brewery told shareholders.
"…Sri Lanka is in a unique position; in this country, the tax per millilitre of alcohol is inversely proportionate to the alcohol content in the beverage," Lion Brewery said.

San Miguel Corp., the Philippines’ largest company, may sell bonds to small investors and cut its dollar-denominated debt to tap the country’s growing wealth and shield its earnings from a weaker peso, Manila Bulletin reported on February 15.
The energy, infrastructure and beer company plans to borrow more in pesos and sell preferred shares to refinance existing dollar debt and fund infrastructure projects ranging from rail and power to ports and toll roads, President Ramon Ang, 62, said in an interview Feb. 12.
Marketing bonds to mom-and-pop investors, rather than just to big institutional clients, mirrors a move by the Philippine government and companies including Globe Telecom Inc. and Filinvest Land Inc. Retail investors typically buy bonds in smaller denominations, allowing San Miguel to tap the population’s growing prosperity and flush liquidity from call-center revenue and overseas remittances.
“The retail bond market is very liquid,” making it more attractive at times than bank loans for fundraising or refinancing at San Miguel units, Chief Finance Officer Ferdinand Constantino said on February 12.

HiteJinro Co, a leading beer and distilled rice liquor soju manufacturer of South Korea, is looking at a lucrative year from higher soju and beer prices, the Pulse reported on February 16.
HiteJinro surprised the market by reversing into a net profit of 14.4 billion won ($11.8 million) in the fourth quarter ended December with operating income surging by 121.7 percent on-year to 31.4 billion won and sales gaining 5.6 percent to 495.2 billion won. A rise in soju prices was the main factor behind its improved balance sheet.
The factory price for its flagship soju label Chamisul was bumped up to 1,015.7 won per bottle from 961.7 won at the end of November last year. Preorders ahead of the price hike led the surge in sales in the final October-December quarter. The higher price tag is expected to translate into a 40 billion won increase in sales for this year as well.
“For soju, consumption remains steady regardless of higher prices,” said Baek Woon-mok, an analyst at KDB Daewoo Securities. HiteJinro usually sells 800 billion won in soju a year, and extra 40 billion won will roll in when prices are raised by 5.62 percent.

Red Stripe Jamaica plans to bring production of its beer destined for sale in the United States market back home to Kingston, The Gleaner reported on February 17.
This will mean the end of a third-party brewing contract with City Brewing in Pennsylvania, which commenced in 2012.
The local brewer's new managing director, Ricardo Nuncio, is scheduled to provide particulars on the move at a press conference on February 17, accompanied by Finance Minister Dr Peter Phillips.
The company wouldn't hint at details of the announcement, but the finance minister's presence might speak to the employment tax credit - a provision under the new tax legislation that allows for companies to reduce income tax payable by up to 30 per cent through measures that lead to increased jobs - from which Red Stripe should benefit.
It's not likely that the Government would give the brewer a tax break under Section 86 of the Income Tax Act, from which Red Stripe benefited between 2002 and 2006. Then, the J$2.2 billion, five-year tax break was given to the brewer to shore up the company's export drive.

New Zealand: Craft beer prices may have to rise because of hop shortage

A number of factors, including droughts in the United States and Australia, combined with a growing demand for hops, means beer prices may have to rise, New Zealand’s Stuff.co.nz reported on February 14, citing local brewers.
Black Dog Brewery manager Adrian Klemp said all beer makers were feeling the squeeze because of the global demand for hops.
Klemp said hops can be sourced from a number of countries, including New Zealand, but the demand for aromatic US hops such as Simcoe, Citra and Amarillo – which give tropical fruit-flavours to pale ales and IPAs – is at an all-time high.
"The prices of all the American hops have sky-rocketed, they are very expensive. A lot of the smaller breweries can't commit to those prices, so it is very difficult."
He expected the cost of craft beers to rise, especially for American pale ales, because the price of some of the hops needed to create the brew had doubled in the past year.
Klemp said it wasn't the first time prices had spiked. In 2012 there was a similar problem of demand outweighing supply.

India: Punjab National Bank declares United Breweries Holdings a wilful defaulter

United Breweries Holdings shares slumped nearly 14 per cent on February 16 after the Vijay Mallya-controlled company was declared a wilful defaulter by state-run Punjab National Bank, NDTV reported.
The lender tagged United Breweries Holdings as wilful defaulter for not paying back a loan of Rs. 800 crore given to now-defunct Kingfisher Airlines.
Both Mr Mallya and United Breweries Holdings were guarantors to a Rs. 6,900 crore loan Kingfisher Airlines had taken from a consortium of 17 lenders led by State Bank of India (SBI) in early 2010.
According to the Reserve Bank, a wilful defaulter in one who as a borrower has the ability to pay, but is unwilling to pay.
Punjab National Bank's decision to declare United Breweries Holdings as wilful defaulter comes months after India's biggest lender by assets - SBI - declared Mr Mallya, Kingfisher Airlines and United Breweries Holdings as wilful defaulters in November 2015.
United Breweries Holdings said that it will challenge Punjab National Bank's decision. "The company is in consultation with its legal counsels to challenge the decision by taking appropriate legal action that may be required in this regard," UB Holdings said in a press release.

Vietnam: Vietnam Brewery Limited has no plans to change its joint venture or sell Laru beer to China

Vietnam Brewery Limited (VBL) would neither change its joint venture member, nor sell Laru beer brand to China, VBL managing director Leo Evers was quoted as saying by SGGP on February 16.
Reporting to Secretary of the Da Nang City Party Committee Nguyen Xuan Anh, Leo Evers affirmed that the group was working to expand Laru market share.
He has rejected recent rumors of the deal, adding that it had greatly affected VBL's production and trading.
VBL Da Nang is a member of VBL Vietnam which is a joint venture between Singaporean Asia Pacific Breweries Ltd (APB) and Vietnamese Saigon Trading Group (Satra).
Last year the company contributed nearly VND1.7 trillion (US$76 million) to the city's budget, said Mr. Xuan Anh.

Namibia Breweries Limited has taken the task upon itself to grow and use local barley, a key input in its manufacturing process. This will also make Namibia Breweries Limited the first and only brewer in Africa to grow and use its own barley, Southern Times Africa reported on February 15.
The initiative recently gave birth to a new beer mark, King Lager, which Namibia Breweries has stated is born of the land. Inside Southern Africa recently caught up with Ohlthaver and List Group spokesperson, Roux-Che Locke on the local barley initiative.
