Scientific Digest

LUPULIN GLANDS IN FULL BEAUTY

ABSTRACT
Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) is a powerful way to see exact details in a nano or micro scale. This work used SEM to assess lupulin glands from different hop varieties. These pictures show the changes and development of lupulin gland during the growing season. For each hop variety, 50 micrographs were visually assessed and compared based on lupulin surface topography, degree of fullness, and volume. The gland features were correlated and clustered against the chemical properties of the corresponding variety. The cluster data confirmed there are larger gland volumes in the bittering hop varieties independent of the country of origin. In further research it would be valuable to investigate the same hop variety grown in different countries and to determine the effect of environmental and handling conditions on the structural features of the lupulin glands.

Brewery news Australia: Carlsberg and Coopers Brewing to launch jointly new Carlsberg Mid 3.5% beer
Australia will be one of the first markets globally to see the launch of the new Carlsberg Mid 3.5% beer, with Coopers Brewing adding the beer to its international portfolio, The Shout reported on February 12.

The new beer has been in development for six months and Carlsberg has worked closely with Coopers, who will be brewing the beer at its Regency Park headquarters in South Australia.

Birgitte Funch, Carlsberg’s master brewer said: “Carlsberg Mid 3.5 per cent is light, easy drinking and refreshing. The all malt recipe and Carlsberg yeast strain give a balance between body and flavour, even with a lower alcohol making Carlsberg mid-strength the ideal choice.”

The beer will be distributed by Premium Beverages and Coopers’ national sales and marketing director Cam Pearce said the beer will be available nationally from March.

“Sales of Mild Ale 3.5% grew by 13.7 per cent during 2015 to become Coopers’ third-largest product by volume,” Pearce said.

“We believe the category will continue to grow and we were looking for a mid-strength lager to round out our offering. Following discussions with Carlsberg, agreement was reached to brew and distribute Carlsberg Mid 3.5%.”

Carlsberg country manager Australia, Jacob Anderson, added: “We are excited to be launching Carlsberg ...More info on site

Barley news Canada: Lethbridge feed barley prices strengthen on bargain buying
Lethbridge feed barley prices have strengthened on bargain buying, according to one market watcher, while demand for feed wheat is steady at best, Canadian Cattlemen reported on February 11.

Lethbridge barley prices have increased from C$200-C$205 in January to C$205-C$215 in February, as the grain becomes more difficult to source, said Jim Beusekom, president at Market Place Commodities.

“It’s not an issue, but it becomes a market factor,” he said.

Demand for feed barley has increased, he said, as buyers have been swayed by cheaper prices.

“I think the feed wheat situation is a little different.”

The amount of feed wheat being used is limited, but constant, Beusekom said. “It’s steady at best, and buyers just pick away at the supply that’s out there.”

Despite fluctuations within the market, feed grain prices in Lethbridge are stronger than those seen a year ago.

Producers saw increased amounts of export-quality wheat and barley this year, which take away from the amount of feed available.

“A lot of it is milling grade, so we have less pushback into the feed market with wheat.”

Producers are favouring malting barley, and have seen higher-quality yields this year, he said. Product that is rejected by malt companies becomes feed.
