Brewery news USA, WA: Craft Brew Alliance and Pabst Brewing Company enter into brewing agreement
Craft Brew Alliance, Inc. (“CBA”), a leading craft brewing company, and Pabst Brewing Company (“PBC”), the largest American-owned brewer, announced on January 11 that they have entered into a brewing agreement that supports strategic growth objectives for both companies.

PBC subsidiary Rainier Brewing Company (“Rainier”) will begin brewing Rainier Pale Mountain Ale, as well as other Rainier brands, at CBA’s brewery in Woodinville, Washington in the spring of 2016. As part of the agreement, PBC has been granted an option to purchase the Woodinville facility at any time during the next three years.

The agreement between CBA and Rainier provides benefits for both companies. As part of CBA’s strategy to continue evolving its national brewing footprint and drive financial profitability, the company is making significant investments to increase production capability and efficiency and support its growth in key markets. The expansion investments include increasing capacity in its largest and most efficient brewery in Portland to 750,000 barrels per year and building a new 100,000-barrel brewery in Hawaii. The agreement with Rainier enables it to maximize capacity in its Woodinville brewery while pursuing these expansion projects. For Rainier, the agreement marks a true homecoming with the return of brewing to its home ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, MO: Springfield Brewing Company purchases new building to triple brewing capacity
Springfield Brewing Company has purchased the building directly west of its downtown Springfield location, as the company prepares to triple its brewing capacity, Springfield News-Leader reported on January 11.

Bryan Bevel, a partner and the brewing company's managing director of operations, said the installation of eight 30-barrel stainless steel fermentation tanks in the building at 521 W. McDaniel will give the brewery the ability to produce about 6,000 barrels of beer annually. In 2015, operating at maximum capacity, the brewery produced about 2,200 barrels.

"It's not that we need more space," Bevel said. "We need more fermentation."

Bevel said 2015's output was about double that of 2011, the year that he and fellow partners purchased the brewery from Springfield-based Paul Mueller Company, which opened the brewery and restaurant at 305 S. Market Street in 1997 as something of a showroom for its stainless steel tanks.

The brewery did minimal distribution when it was owned by Mueller. Now, four permanent beers and three seasonal ones are distributed to 60 counties in southwest Missouri, Bevel said. The most popular? Hop Lobster.

The additional capacity will allow the company to add an additional permanent beer, along with a fourth seasonal one, to those it distributes, Bevel said; additional ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, WI: Enlightened Brewing Company planning to triple brewery size
"Drink it down. Enlighten up." That's the tagline of one of Milwaukee's newest breweries, a company that could have bigger digs and a Bay View tasting room by early summer, OnMilwaukee.com reported on January 8.

Enlightened Brewing Company, a partnership between native Milwaukeeans Tommy Vandervort and James Larson, has plans to more than triple the size of its brewery, currently located on the second floor of Bay View's Lincoln Warehouse at 2018 S. 1st St. #207.

Thanks to funding through WWBIC, the brewery has enacted plans to expand its footprint from 500 square feet to 1,700 in a move that will allow it to quadruple production and increase exposure through the addition of a tasting room.

"It's something we're excited about," says Vandervort. "It will go a long way to help us get the word out about our beer."

Of course, the beer Enlightened brews isn't for just anyone.

Brews like the cleverly named limited edition English mild "Polly Baker's Porridge" (a reference history buffs may recognize, but many others should look up) are not only meant to be sipped and enjoyed, but also to incite curiosity and inquisition.

Named with references to science and philosophy, the brewery's three year-round offerings include A Priori Pale Ale ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, PA: Troegs Independent Brewing to expand its Hershey brewery
Troegs Independent Brewing plans to expand its brewery at 200 E. Hersheypark Drive in Hershey that will involve large scale production of some of its typically short-run, wood-aged beers, witf.org reported on January 8.

Troegs was started in Harrisburg in 1997, but moved to Hershey in 2011 when it outgrew its old building and decided to build a new one.

The expansion was announced by co-owners John and Chris Trogner on the brewery's blog.

The Trogners mention in the blog post that the expansion will be done by Dave Maule Architects and Pyramid Construction, the companies behind the design and construction of the Hershey facility.

"This new collaboration, called the Splinter Cellar, will create a dynamic area that adds needed fermentation space for wood-aged specialty beers and serves as the new entrance for our behind-the-scenes guided tours," John Trogner said in the blog post.

Trogner explains that the Splinter Cellar will feature glass exterior walls on the northeast side of the brewery, and three wooden fermenters that stand more than 23 feet tall.

"We started our Splinter Beer series not long after our Scratch Beer series," Jeff Herb, marketing communications coordinator for Troegs, said. "Both of those consisted of small batches of experimental brews."

Brewery news Canada, PE & NS: Upstreet Craft Brewing planning entrance into Nova Scotia beer market this week
Upstreet Craft Brewing is planning its entrance into the Nova Scotia beer market with four days of events starting with a launch party at the Stubborn Goat Gastro Pub in Halifax Jan. 14, Truro Daily News reported on January 11.

The brewery also has tap takeovers planned at Stillwell Bar and Good Robot Brewing Co., as well as several tasting sessions at Bishops Cellar.

In addition to being on tap at a number of Halifax establishments, bottles will be sold at Bishops Cellar. The product line includes Upstreet flagships strawberry-rhubarb wheat beer, traditional Czech pilsner, white IPA and American pale ale and it also offers a rotating selection of seasonal beers.

The brewery opened its doors in Charlottetown, PE in the summer of 2015 and within six months the beer was selling in dozens of local restaurants and pubs, while bottle sales were exceeding expectations. Its reputation for beer, as well as for building strong partnerships and giving back to the community helped Upstreet to position itself as a player in the Maritime beer industry, say the owners.

Mitch Cobb, the company's co-founder and CEO, hopes that Upstreet will have similar success in Nova Scotia as it has seen in P.E.I.

Brewery news USA, AK: Kenai River Brewing Company to move into bigger facility by May
Even with walls of plywood and bare fixtures, the new Kenai River Brewing Company building in Soldotna, AK gives off a welcoming air, Kenai Peninsula Online reported on January 11.

Situated with its back to Soldotna Creek and facing a quiet side street from the main vein of the Sterling Highway, the future brewery blends into the trees, despite its size — several thousand square feet.

The Soldotna-based beer company is planning to move from its current facility on Aspen Street into the new building, boilers and all, by May. The move will add more pub space for customers as well as significantly more space for brewing and canning, said Doug Hogue, co-owner of Kenai River Brewing Company.

“If you’re (at the brewery) on a Friday night, it’s packed,” Hogue said, gesturing to the future pub space. “This has room for about 85 people.”

The new facility will have freestanding and wall-mounted tables with a bar where customers can order some of the brewery’s beer, which they can watch being made through a set of windows. The overall aesthetic is meant to be like a cannery, Hogue said. Industrial is an easy look for a brewery, with all the metal fermenters and boilers, he ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, OR: de Garde Brewing adds another production facility in Tillamook
When they opened their first tasting room in the fall of 2013, de Garde Brewing co-founders Linsey Hamacher and Trevor Rogers chose a small storefront in downtown Tillamook, Tillamook County Pioneer reported on January 12.

From the start, their wild, sour beers, brewed at the time in their home garage and made available to consumers at limited release events, took the regional craft beer scene by storm. As word rapidly spread, fans of deGarde began snapping up tickets for quarterly release events at a rate of 600 per hour. Eleven months later, in August, 2014, they relocated the tasting room from 1909 2nd Street to the Port of Tillamook Bay where they could set up shop in larger quarters and expand production to meet growing demand for their beer.

However, with the recent purchase of the former NAPA Auto Parts building at 114 Ivy Avenue, de Garde owner Hamacher and head brewer Rogers are planning to relocate their tasting room back to the city’s commercial core, hopefully in early fall.

“We love the idea of being back in Tillamook,” said Hamacher. To head off rumors of a de Garde brew pub, she added, “But it will just be a tasting room, not a ...More info on site

Barley news USA: ND Genesis barley added to AMBA’s 2016 list of recommended malting barley varieties
The new North Dakota State University two-rowed barley variety ND Genesis has been added to the American Malting Barley Association's (AMBA) 2016 list of recommended malting barley varieties. The announcement came following the AMBA board meeting held in December in Milwaukee.

ND Genesis was released by the North Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station in 2015 and distributed for the first time through the North Dakota County Seed Increase Program.

Improved foliar disease resistance and yield potential give ND Genesis an advantage over Pinnacle, an NDSU two-rowed barley variety released in 2007.

"ND Genesis seems adapted to all parts of North Dakota and adjacent areas of Minnesota, Montana and South Dakota," says Richard Horsley, NDSU Department of Plant Sciences head. "ND Genesis also has some promise in the spring barley production areas of the eastern U.S., where growers producing barley for the craft market have been growing Pinnacle because of its low protein."

ND Genesis is a high-yielding barley variety. Based on eight years of the barley breeding program's yield trials across the state, ND Genesis has about a 5 percent yield advantage over Pinnacle. The average yield advantage is more than 8 percent in eastern North Dakota and nearly 3 percent in western North Dakota.

Brewery news USA, PA: Yards Brewing Co. looking for bigger location in Philadelphia
Yards Brewing Co. sells enough beer - 42,000 barrels last year - that it is running out of space at the 40,000-square-foot plant it opened in Philadelphia in 2007, Philly.com reported on January 11.

The brewery - Yards' third since president Tom Kehoe opened the original tiny plant in Manayunk 22 years ago - is crowded with 22 shining 200-barrel fermenter tanks; cold storage; a loading dock; a research lab; a tasting room/restaurant, which opens at noon daily; and offices, all in the riverside neighborhood near the SugarHouse Casino.

Partners Kehoe and Trevor Prichett are looking for an 80,000- to 100,000-square-foot home, and want to remain in the city, close to its most loyal users, if it can find the right place.

"We hope to start building in six to 12 months," and move in by 2018, Kehoe said. The company settled in the current site in 2007 after he split from ex-partner Bill Barton, who went on to cofound Philadelphia Brewing Co. at Yards' former Kensington site.

Unlike the factories that continue to leave Philadelphia looking for cheaper space and costs, Yards says demand for its product is growing from its local customer base. "Look for the hipsters," Kehoe said, laughing. "We would ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, OR: Ordnance Brewing announces major expansion
By his own description, Eastern Oregon farmer Craig Coleman doesn’t like to get bored. So in addition to growing blueberries, hay, field corn and cut flowers — not to mention renting ground to a potato farmer – he and several partners decided to open a brewery in Boardman, Capital Press reported on January 8.

“Why not?” he said. “The way I look at things is, if we can do one, why not do 10?”

Ordnance Brewing, named for the ghost town across the highway from the defunct Umatilla Chemical Depot that once housed the deadly agents used in chemical weapons, opened for business around Halloween 2014 and this month announced a major expansion.

The brewery, in the Port of Morrow, will jump production from seven barrels per brewing cycle to 50. For perspective, one barrel equals 31 gallons. The company now produces two or three brews per week, head brewer Logan Mayfield said. Production eventually will increase to six or eight brews per day, he said.

The company will focus on producing four types of beer in cans and bottles: A Rye Pale Ale; an India Pale Ale called FMJ, for Full Metal Jacket; Rivercrest Kolsch, a German-style light lager; and an English-style ale ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, WA & Canada, BC: Port Townsend’s Propolis Brewing launching distribution in British Columbia
Port Townsend’s Propolis Brewing is teaming up with Beerthirst to distribute its multi-awarding ales in British Columbia, Brewbound reported on January 12.

The new expansion will bring Propolis’ unique, hand-crafted seasonal herbal ales to specialty liquor stores throughout British Columbia in late January 2016. The introduction will give British Columbian craft beer drinkers access to award winning Propolis ales such as Beltane Golden Elderflower Saison Brett and Spruce Golden Saison.

“Propolis is making extremely small batch high end herbal seasonal ales, many that fall into the farmhouse beer style that the consumers are craving regularly,” says Jason Lehr, rare beer director at Beerthirst. “Having the bottles both wax dipped and corked shows that they care about how the liquid is cared for after leaving the brewery. They are one of a few breweries that pride themselves on `beer care’; how to store the bottles and for how long, how to pour the beer, and array of food pairings are outlined for every beer they sell”.

Propolis Ales are brewed using 100% Certified Organic Pacific Northwest Malted Barley and Wheat, as well as organically sourced spelt, oats and rye. Utilizing locally grown organic herbs, or wild-craft herbs from the forest and ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, VA: Roanoke Railhouse Brewing Company now for sale
Roanoke Railhouse Brewing Company is now for sale, wsls10.com reported on January 8.

The founder Steve Davidson said he accomplished his biggest goals.

Davidson said there is no price tag on the brewery and will discuss that with potential buyers.

“We have a fully capable brewing operation and appropriate amounts of cold storage, plus our Franklin Road Taproom,” said Davidson in a statement. “But a new brewer will want our licensing and our signature recipes.”

Roanoke Railhouse Brewing Co. has federal and state licensing.

The brewery opened in 2009 and is Roanoke’s oldest brewery.

Brewery news South Africa: AB InBev obtains secondary inward listing in Johannesburg
Anheuser-Busch InBev (AB InBev) has obtained a secondary inward listing on the JSE Main Board with effect from the commencement of trading on January 15, the Johannesburg Stock Exchange announced on January 12.

The world’s largest brewer announced in November that it intends to list on the South African Reserve Bank and the JSE for the secondary inward listing after acquiring SABMiller for US $107 billion.

An inward listing is required if a non-South African company wants to raise capital in South Africa or issue shares as acquisition currency to South Africans as part of a merger or acquisition.

The JSE on January 12 said AB InBev would be considered for index inclusion at the March 2016 Quarterly Review for the first time, subject to all other index eligibility criteria being passed, since index series is not applicable to any share that is classified as foreign for index purposes.

At the time of this announcement the average net market cap of the All Share Index was approximately R41 billion, whereas 5 percent of AB InBev’s global market capitalisation was approximately R160 billion.

The beer geeks’ conversation veered away from chit-chat and they dug through the table’s collective gustatory vocabulary in search of the right words to describe what they just drank. Haam yu, salted fish? Not quite.

Tàisuì isn’t a lambic, but it’s something imagined in that direction—cloudy, sour, with a thick mouthfeel. Drawing inspiration from spontaneous fermentation involving wild yeasts, Dugar and his crew at Young Master ...More info on site
