Less skunky with more hops
ABSTRACT
Sunstruck flavor is a widely known off-flavor in beer
often described as skunky. It occurs when beer is
exposed to sunlight during storage owing to
photodecomposition of isohumulonein the presence
of riboflavin. Polyphenols are known to be off-flavor inhibitors. Since hops are rich
in polyphenols the aim of this study was to specify a
suitable hop product and the process parameters to
reduce the sunstruck flavor perception in beer.
Because of the high total and single polyphenol
content the tannin extract was selected for further
trials. After exposure to light, the tasting results
concluded that the higher the tannin extract level the
lower the sunstruck perception.

USA, CO: Boulder’s Fate Brewing to increase capacity
|
Fate Brewing Co. plans to increase its beer-brewing capacity by expanding into space that formerly housed Avery Brewing Co. at 5763 Arapahoe Ave. in Boulder, BizWest reported on November 20.
Currently, Fate is producing about 4,000 barrels a year at it brewpub at 1600 38th St. in Boulder, and will have the capacity to produce an additional 50,000 barrels, the amount Avery was able to produce per year at its old site.
Alyssa Lundgren, Fate’s chief operating officer, said Fate will operate pubs and breweries at both locations.
The company is leasing the added 13,000 square feet of space from Avery, and has purchased equipment that will increase its fermentation capability by more than 80 percent.
Of the 13,000 square feet, Fate will use about 8,000 square feet for a second pub and warehouse space and use 5,000 square feet for brewing. Fate’s current brew space is about 7,000 square feet and its brewpub is 3,500 square feet.
Fate has the ability to brew 10 barrels per batch at its current site on 38th Street, and 35 barrels per batch at the old Avery site.
Since opening in February 2013, Fate has won several awards including a Gold Medal in the German Style Kölsch category at

USA, PA: Victory Brewing launches its third brewpub in Parkesburg
|
Victory Brewing Company announced the opening of Victory at Parkesburg, the third brewpub for the Philadelphia-based national craft brewer, FSR Magazine reported on November 20.
Located at 3127 Lower Valley Road in Parkesburg, Pennsylvania, the brewpub will feature self-guided tours of the EPA-Green Power Partnership accredited 160,000-square-foot facility, giving fans a behind glimpse into the brewing process, bottling and packaging lines. The brewpub will boast a rotating selection of 30 Victory beers on draft, a double-headed growler machine, a crowler (custom can filling) machine, and a menu inspired by local ingredients.
“Opening our third brewpub is truly a Victory for Ron and I, and for our fans,” says Bill Covaleski, Victory’s president and brewmaster. “As the popularity of craft beer has grown, so has the desire of fans to see where the barley-and-hops magic happens. We are proud to show our fans the great lengths to which we go to give them delicious beer and food made with the highest quality and freshest ingredients. This is what they have come to expect from Victory, this is what they deserve, and this is what we will deliver.”

USA, VA: Screech Owl Brewing becomes West Virginia’s 14th craft brewery
|
The 14th craft brewery in West Virginia just opened this past September in Preston County, WBOY-TV reported on November 20.
"I always thought in my younger days, my lot was to drink as much beer as I could, but I found out I was better at making it," said Roger Johnson, owner of Screech Owl Brewing, located in Bruceton Mills.
This discovery happened when Roger Johnson's wife Crista gave him a store-bought beer brewing kit for Christmas one year. His concoctions were a hit with friends and family. This is when he decided to make a go of it and become a part of the brewery community.
Screech Owl Brewing has five different beers on tap, from the IPAs to the dark beers, and there's also seasonal ones. But one of the favorites is the Threshold Floor Wheat. They also have CAPS IPA, Ryker's IPA, Adalyns Brown Ale, and their seasonal Preston Harvest Ale.
All of Screech Owl's beers are for sale and are available in six-packs, refillable glass jugs, and kegs. Johnson takes pride in each of his hand crafted beers.
"Add your own little twist to it, you know that's what craft beer is all about is

USA, MN: Bryn Mawr Brewing changes name to Utepils Brewing
|
Bryn Mawr Brewing, which just raised $1.2 million to help refurbish the vacant Glenwood water plant in north Minneapolis, has had to change the name of the brewpub that should be open by next spring, the StarTribune reported on Novmeber 20.
The new name is Utepils Brewing, also the name of the parent company. It’s Norwegian for the first beer enjoyed outdoors in the sunshine after a long, dark winter. The Utepils owners this fall were contacted by lawyers in Oregon who own Bryn Mawr Winery and have the name trademarked.
“We tried to talk to them about various ways of living together … as a brewery in Minnesota and a winery in Oregon, but they didn’t want to talk,” founder Dan Justesen said. “Our lawyers said we had a chance [if we sued them], but we could lose and our lawyers bill by the hour and that’s a lot of money.
“We started out with the name Utepils Brewing before we bought the property in Bryn Mawr. Utepils is not just about a beer, but about the experience and it’s a great, evocative name.”
Justesen, a veteran of the local craft microbrew industry, and CFO Jim Moore said earlier that there’s room for

South Korea: Beer imports climb to new annual high in just 10 months this year
|
South Korea's beer imports have climbed to a new annual high in just the first 10 months of the year, data showed on November 22, due to what market observers here called growing consumer exposure to foreign delicacies amid a continued surge in the number of people going abroad, Yonhap news reported.
In the January-October period, the country imported some $118 million worth of beer, already surpassing the annual total of 2014, when beer imports surged to a record high of $112 million, according to the data from the Korea International Trade Association.
The 10-month tally also marks a 26.9 percent spike from the same period last year.
The country's beer imports have been growing steadily since 2010, posting an annual growth of between 17.7 percent and 33.6 percent.
"A growing number of people are looking for the same beer they have tasted while traveling abroad, which has also apparently led a rise in the number of brands imported," said an official from a beer importer.
In 2014, 14.2 million South Koreans traveled abroad, a 16.6 percent on-year gain and an astonishing 61.4 percent spike from just four years earlier when only 8.8 million Koreans

The Czech Republic: Survey shows both men and women drink more beer per week this year
|
Czech men have raised beer consumption by a quarter of a litre to 8.3 half-a-litre beers a week this year, according to a survey that centre CVVM made in September among 953 people aged over 18 who drink beer at least sometimes, Jiřķ Vinopal of CVVM said at a press meeting on November 24.
Czech women drink 2.5 beers a week on average this year, 0.1 litre more than in 2014.
According to data from the Czech Association of Breweries and Malt Houses (ČSPS), beer production in the Czech Republic dropped by 2 percent in the first eight months of this year.
Beer in the Czech Republic is regularly consumed by 91 percent of men and 56 percent of women. The survey has been conducted in the Czech Republic for 12 years.
“In the long term, the declared beer consumption stagnates or falls moderately by men and grows by women,” Vinopal added.
Women drink beer on average twice a week and men every second day.
Older people drink beer a bit more often. However, the poll shows that the share of people with university education who drink beer is growing. The share has reached 93 percent this year, while in 2004 it stood at around

Croatia: New craft brewery to open in Osijek in December
|
Croatia's craft beer revolution continues, now expanding in Slavonia, Total Croatia News reported on November 25.
In early December, the first craft brewery in Osijek, Black Hat, will start its production at the premises of the Bios business incubator in Osijek. The project has been launched by Igor Ilić, a graduate of electrical engineering, and Danijel Bo˛urić, an owner of a private company, reports Glas Slavonije.
These beer lovers say that the idea for launching a craft brewery occurred a year ago when they decided to turn their hobby into a business. One of the reasons was the fact that in recent years in Croatia there has been a growing interest in craft beers. Also, Daniel from an early age had a vision of opening his own private brewery.
The opening ceremony of the Black Hat brewery is planned for 9 December, when the first batch of their beer will come on the market. At first, the production capacity will be 4,000 litres of beer per month, with plans to reach a capacity of at least 8,000 litres a month in the near future.
"The first beer that we will produce is Blond Ale, which is most similar to the beers that
