Flavoromics in hops

ABSTRACT
The genetic basis of hop organoleptic chemistry is relatively poorly understood. This Autralian Research team is looking into a mapping cross containing 166 genotypes in two different fields. Data about survival, plant structur, flowering, sexual phenotype, yield and hop acid chemistry on male and female plants are being collected to analyse genetic variation and genotypes by site interactions. The ulitamte aim for this study is to obtain an extended chemical phenotype, including headspace solid phase micro extraction (SPME) of hop flavor volatiles, polyphenols, glycosides, laboratory scale beer volatile SPME profiles to be intergrated with organoleptic data. So that one day QTLs (Quantitative Trait Loci) in hop associated with organoleptic traits can be identified.

Brewery news Vietnam & Canada & USA: Saigon Asset Management Corporation acquires Canadian and US distributor of popular Saigon beer
Ho Chi Minh City-based Saigon Asset Management Corporation has struck a deal to acquire Heritage Beverage, the sole distributor of the popular Saigon beer in Canada and the US, Vietnam media reported on November 18.

The acquisition will allow the privately-owned investment manager to boost exports of Vietnamese beer products into the countries, Louis Nguyen, CEO of the company, was quoted as saying by news website VnExpress.

The deal's value was not revealed.

Founded in 2007, Saigon Asset Management Corporation now manages two funds - Vietnam Equity Holding and Vietnam Property Holding, the website reported.

The funds have invested more than US$250 million in more than 45 companies and projects across Vietnam, mainly in the sectors of food and beverage, education, technology and health care. Their portfolios also include private companies in the US.

Headquartered in California's Beverly Hills, Heritage Beverage was established in 1994 to import and distribute the products of Sabeco, now Vietnam's largest brewer, according to VnExpress. Best sellers of Sabeco include 333, the red Saigon Export and the green Saigon Special.

Brewery news USA, FL: Civil Society Brewing Company launching in Jupiter
Beers from Jupiter, Florida’s first brewery will start being served on Nov. 20, MyPalmBeachPost reported.

After all the permits, the licenses, the inspections, the work — it’s finally going to happen,” said Karl Volstad, 33, as he drew a Jupiter Rising, a brown ale with coffee, from the tap at the bar in Abacoa Town Center.

Customers to Civil Society Brewing Company will find a 5,400-square-foot industrial looking place that is half brew house and half tap room.

Civil Society joins several others in Palm Beach County, including Due South Brewing Co., in Boynton Beach, Funky Buddha Brewery, founded in Boca Raton with its main brewery in Oakland Park and Tequesta Brewing Co. in Tequesta. Whole Foods on Palm Beach Lakes Boulevard has a beer bar.

Camaraderie — not competition — is the relationship among the county’s microbreweries, said Volstad, a graduate of Jupiter Christian School and one of the three owners from north county.

“We’re all the underdogs. The macrobrews like Coors, Budweiser and Anheuser-Busch, they control most of the beer market. I’ve talked to the other local brewmasters. They’ve been a great help,” Volstad said.

The other two owners of Civil Society are Volstad’s cousin, Chris Volstad, 29, a Palm Beach Gardens ...More info on site

Brewery news Canada: Muskoka Brewery to cease operations in Alberta, British Columbia and Saskatchewan
An Ontario craft brewery says it will be ceasing operations in Alberta, British Columbia and Saskatchewan by the end of the year, Hamilton Spectator reported on November 16.

Muskoka Brewery says it was "shocked and disappointed" by the Alberta government's decision to increase the tax rate for craft brewers outside of the New West Partnership.

It says the tax increase has created unacceptable conditions for all craft brewers that operate outside of the New West Partnership and wish to sell beer in Alberta.

Founders Gary McMullen and Kirk Evans opened Muskoka Brewery in Bracebridge, Ont., in 1996 with their Muskoka Cream Ale.

Today, the brewery employs more than 105 people and claims it is one of the fastest-growing craft breweries in Canada.

McMullen, the president of Muskoka Brewery, says the company had been planning to widen its footprint in the western provinces, but the tax change means it's "unsustainable to sell our beer in these provinces."

"We'd like to sincerely thank our customers for their support and passion for us, and we'll be back when these trade barriers are squashed," McMullen said.

Brewery news Canada, ON: Kame & Kettle Beer Works already operational in Fonthill, Ontario
The small community of Fonthill in Ontario’s Niagara Region is now home to one of the province’s newest craft breweries, with the recent opening of Kame & Kettle Beer Works, Canadian Beer News reported on November 13.

Named for the Fonthill Kame, a local geological feature, Kame & Kettle was founded by long-time friends Dave Beifuss and Todd Barber.

Currently brewing on a single keg system, the duo are producing a constantly changing line-up of beers that are available exclusively in the K&K tasting room at 25 Pelham Town Square where they can be sampled on-site or purchased to-go in 950 ml “crowler” cans that are filled to order.

Brewery news USA, ME: Mast Landing Brewing gets approval for launch in Westbrook
Beer tourists traveling between Sebago Brewing Co.’s headquarters in Gorham and the lineup of breweries on Portland’s Industrial Way cut right through the center of Westbrook.

Soon, they’ll have a reason to stop, Press Herald reported on November 18.

Mast Landing Brewing Co., which got its start in a garage in Freeport, plans to open the city’s first brewery and tasting room in an industrial building downtown by the end of January.

The Westbrook Planning Board on November 17 approved the change of use for the former home of Atlantic Limousine at 920 Main St. into a microbrewery.

Mast Landing joins a rapidly growing craft beer industry in the state, where about one third of its 67 breweries opened in the past two years, according to the Maine Brewers’ Guild.

Having a brewery in every community is where the beer scene, here and across the country, is headed, said Sean Sullivan, the guild’s executive director.

At the same time, the growing number of craft beer drinkers in Maine and nationwide has created a sector of tourism based on visiting breweries and tasting beers.

Thirty-five percent of visitors to Maine stop at a brewery or brewpub while they’re here, according to the Maine Office of Tourism’s latest survey.

Brewery news USA: Heineken USA ending tequila-flavored beer experiment
Heineken USA is ending its tequila-flavored beer experiment. Desperados, a lager aged in tequila barrels that launched in the U.S. in 2014, will be discontinued, the marketer confirmed on November 18.

"We're shifting our focus to continue amplifying our four priority brands of Heineken/Heineken Light, Dos Equis, Strongbow & Tecate," a Heineken USA spokesman said in an email.

"Desperados is a great brand that's growing globally, but domestically, we want to remain laser focused on those four."

Desperados, which is sold in 85 international markets, had been handled globally by Wieden & Kennedy. But that relationship ended this past summer at the same time W&K's contract for the brand Heineken account was terminated. On November 18 Heineken announced that it appointed Amsterdam-based agency We Are Pi to be its lead global communications partner for Desperados, which is especially popular in France.

"Desperados is a beer born with tequila – this unique proposition defines the brand's challenging attitude," Walter Drenth, Heineken's senior global director for international brands, said in a statement. "We were looking for a fresh creative partner with profound understanding of our target audience and the bold attitude which the brand deserves. We are convinced We Are Pi's approach makes it a ...More info on site

Brewery news UK: British craft brewing industry may be living a golden age
The traditional world view of the British pint is of something warm, flat and rather unpleasant. But the recent signing of a multi-million-pound deal to supply barley to China underlines the extraordinarily far-reaching esteem in which the British brewing industry is now held, The Conversation reported on November 17.

There are now almost 1,300 breweries in Britain, according to the Good Beer Guide 2015. Such a figure would have been unimaginable in 1970, when the bent for bland, big-name products was so dominant that Essex-based brewer Ind Coope saw fit to advertise its Long Life brand with the slogan “It never varies!”.

The Campaign for Real Ale (or CAMRA), founded in 1971, has changed everything. As Peter Swann explained five years ago in his paper The Fall and Rise of the Local Brew, it showed how discerning tastes and an appetite for diversity can lead to economic success.

This lesson did not go unnoticed elsewhere in the world. America took CAMRA as its inspiration and introduced the notion of “craft brewing”, as practised by comparatively small and local brewers determined to offer a distinct alternative to the mass-produced wares of the mega-players.

And now it’s Britain’s own craft-brewing revolution that is shaping global trends. ...More info on site

Brewery news Japan: Young Japanese consumers embracing foreign beer brands
Sales of foreign beers in Japan are increasing due to their growing popularity and fashionable image among young people who had previously shied away from the beverages, The Japan News reported on November 19.

Attention is focused on whether foreign beer brands could halt a decline in the popularity of beer.

Many young men and women these days stop off at a restaurant offering a wide selection of beers on the east side of JR Shinjuku Station in Tokyo to enjoy conversation and a glass of the Dutch beer Heineken. The restaurant is adding foreign beers to its menu, including Guinness from Ireland, and also Belgian brands.

Significant commercial efforts to introduce foreign beer brands to the domestic market began in the 1980s, but their sales have been increasing in recent years.

Heineken’s domestic sales in 2014 increased by 11 percent compared to the previous year. In particular, sales of bottled beer were up 37 percent.

Budweiser, an American beer, also enjoyed a sales increase of 10 percent from a year earlier, while the Danish beer Carlsberg was up 19 percent year-on-year. According to the operator of the FamilyMart chain of convenience stores, sales of Mexico’s Corona Extra increased three times from a year earlier, ...More info on site

Brewery news South Korea: Ministry of Strategy and Finance in dispute over imported beer prices
Can the government take issue with a merchant for selling imported beer too cheap?

South Korea’s Ministry of Strategy and Finance said it won't, denying some media reports that it might ban imported beers from being sold too cheap. However, controversy is continuing in the beer market where imported brands are increasing their stake every year, The Korea Times reported on November 20.

It started at a meeting presided over by vice finance minister Joo Hyung-hwan in October, when local beer brewers reportedly complained that imported beers are offered at huge discounts.

When consumers go to shops, they often find promotions that sell diverse imported beers at discounted prices ― for example, a bundle of four cans sold for 10,000 won.

Local beer companies say these promotions are "misleading" consumers and distorting the market.

"Domestic beers have their brewery prices. The law bans selling beer at prices lower than the brewery prices," said a spokeswoman for a leading domestic beer company.

"In the case of imported beers, however, they don't have brewery prices. Importers just put a high price on the tag in the beginning, and then pretend as if they are giving a huge discount," she said. As imported beers aren't subject to price regulations ...More info on site
