Australia: Consumption of low carb beer stabilizes in Australia
|
Consumption of low carb beer has stabilised in Australia and the people who favour it are not who you may expect, according to new research cited by Australian Brews News.
When the low-carb craze reached its peak in September 2011, almost 11 per cent of Australia’s adult population (or 1,853,000 people) were drinking it in an average four weeks, up from 1.6 per cent in June 2006.
The trend has since stabilised, with the latest findings from Roy Morgan Research revealing that low-carb beer is now consumed by 8.5 per cent of Australians.
However, the total proportion of Australians drinking beer has steadily declined over the same period from 42.3 per cent to 36.5 per cent. Low-carb beer consumers now comprise almost one quarter of people drinking beer in an average four weeks — well up on June 2006, when they accounted for just three per cent of the country’s total beer drinkers.
Only one quarter of low-carb beer drinkers are women (about average for beer drinking in general), and men aged under 35 years easily outnumber those aged 50+ (33 per cent vs 21 per cent of total low-carb beer drinkers respectively), Roy Morgan found.

The Czech Republic: Demand for canned beer registers rapid increase

Twenty years ago no self-respecting beer drinker in the Czech Republic would be seen dead swigging beer from a can. There was a widespread perception that bottled beer is superior and beer in cans loses its quality, tasting flat and acquiring a metallic tang. That is fast changing and breweries are expanding their packaging capacities to meet growing demand for canned beer, Radio Praha reported on June 4.
While Czechs, who pride themselves on making the best beer in the world, are still resisting the canned beer revolution abroad, the change in consumer demand is becoming increasingly evident. While bottled beer still has the lion’s share of the market, Czechs are increasingly throwing canned beer into their shopping carts. One reason behind the increasing demand for canned beer is a whole new generation for whom cans are perfectly normal packaging. Another is that more and more consumers are buying canned beer for practical reasons – they are light, unbreakable, easy to open and ideal to take on trips. And thirdly, they are easily disposed of, as compared to returnable glass bottles which you need to wash out and take back to the store.

The state-run Taiwan Tobacco and Liquor Corporation has reportedly spent NT$65 million on recalling 3.7 million beer bottles and reprinting labels ahead of a new government regulations on warning labels, The China Post reported on June 5.
On Jan. 5, the tobacco and liquor division at Finance Ministry's National Treasury Administration updated its regulations on labels of alcoholic beverages. The regulations become effective in July.
The rules stipulate that the font size of each character in the health warning must exceed 0.265 centimetres in height and width.
In addition, the warning "minors should not consume alcohol" should be replaced with "don't drink and drive," according to the regulations.
Ahead of July, TTL deployed around 200 35-ton trucks that recycled 3,700,000 beer bottles from all around Taiwan. The bottles were transported to a manufacturer in Maoli County for recycling.
A member of the public said the recall was a waste of money, water, electricity and other resources. Asked to identify the differences between the old and new beer bottles, two consumers were unable to do so immediately, according to the United Evening News.

Russia: Russia approves new wheat export tax as from July 1
|
Russia approved the launch of a new wheat export tax from July 1, which traders say could threaten profits on advance contracts for the new crop if the rouble weakens in coming months, Reuters reported on May 29.
Russia's government said on May 29 that the new tax was intended to stop exports surging if the rouble drops steeply. The rouble fell sharply against the dollar in 2014, fuelling grain exports, and is yet to fully recover.
The new tax is set at 50 percent of the customs price per tonne minus 5,500 roubles ($105), but not less than 50 roubles per tonne, the government said in a statement.
"This level of export tax, apart from fiscal function, will have a regulatory impact depending on the change in global prices," the government said.
The profitability of already concluded forward contracts for the new marketing year, which starts on July 1, is now at risk because exporters do not know what the rouble rate will be at the moment of supply, several traders said.
