Brewery news Canada: SABMiller to launch Miller Lite nationwide next week
SABMiller PLC will mark on Monday, May 11 Miller Lite’s first nationwide launch in Canada with an ad campaign which will be using the beer’s history to promote it, The Globe and Mail reported.

“Mad Men correctly recounts Miller Lite as the pioneer of the light-beer segment,” said Stewart Cowan, vice-president of marketing at SABMiller Canada.

The ads, which will be in heavy rotation on television throughout the summer, tout the brand as “the light beer that invented light beer,” and will refer to its brewing heritage dating back to 1973.

Canadian consumers have high brand awareness of Miller Lite, SABMiller said, thanks to Canada’s proximity to the United States, where it has been sold for years. The beer was only available with limited marketing in Ontario and Newfoundland, and has not been sold at all here since 2010.

Until now, all of SABMiller’s products – including Miller Genuine Draft, Peroni, Pilsner Urquell and Grolsch – were sold through a partnership with Molson Coors Canada. That partnership ended last October after a lengthy legal dispute and SABMiller opened its own Canadian offices this year.

“Canadian consumers are world-renowned beer lovers,” said Paul Verdu, managing director for Canada.

That may be true, but it’s an awkward time ...More info on site

Brewery news Japan: Consumers in uprising against beer market’s blandndess
Tatsuo Aoki’s low-key Tokyo bar, Popeye, has become a destination for beer fanatics from around Japan. They make the pilgrimage to sample Hokkaido ales and Shizuoka stouts, or for an impromptu lecture from Aoki on hops and yeast, The Sunday Times reported on May 7.

He’s part of an uprising in Japan against the staggering blandness of local beer. Four beverage behemoths dominate the market, all promoting pilsner-style lagers that account for more than 95% of the suds sold. It’s a bit like sidling up to a bar in 1980s Milwaukee: Miller or Budweiser?

Tastes are changing though. Craft beer is gaining popularity in Japan through the efforts of people such as Aoki, much like it has in the US and Europe.

The four giants — Asahi Group Holdings Ltd., Kirin Holdings Co., Suntory Holdings Ltd. and Sapporo Holdings Ltd. — are experimenting with alternative brews too as they face a slide in consumption.

The competition is changing the market and beginning to produce beer drawing acclaim around the world.

“There are dozens of brewers in Japan making fabulous, highly rated beers,” said Matt Simpson, owner of the Marietta, Georgia-based consulting firm The Beer Sommelier. “They’re not exposed yet.”

Japan has been the land of lager ...More info on site

The Board of Directors of MillerCoors, the U.S. and Puerto Rican joint venture between SABMiller plc and Molson Coors Brewing Company, on May 7 named Gavin Hattersley to the role of interim Chief Executive Officer to lead the business when current CEO Tom Long retires June 30, 2015.

Hattersley, 52, currently Chief Financial Officer (CFO) of Molson Coors and former CFO of MillerCoors, will serve as interim CEO for up to six months until the Board completes its search for a permanent successor.
