Brewery news USA, FL: Miami Brewing Co. to expand in Florida
Miami Brewing Company, Homestead’s master of tropically inspired, handcrafted brews, is making its way to the west coast- Florida.

The beer maker, has signed a deal with J.J. Taylor Distributing. That means Miami Brewing Company's varieties will be offered in J.J. Taylor’s 17-county distribution area, including the Tampa region, Miami New Times reports on April 27.

"I think Miami Brewing Company brings some of the Miami flavour and flair to the Tampa market," says Julio Amado, assistant to owner Peter Schnebly.

"South Florida is known as a vacation destination, a tropical getaway, or somewhere that you want to go and relax. What better way to relax than with a beer in your hand? Our tagline is 'Vacation in a beer,' and we try to incorporate that thought when we brew our beers," he adds.

"After the west coast, the plan is global domination!" Amado says. "That might be further down the road, but we're working on opening distribution to the rest of Florida as a top priority. We've already been in contact with some of the other distributors around the state, and we're hoping to be in the stores and bars by fall or winter.

“MBC also began distribution to North Carolina in January, and ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, OH: Four String Brewing to triple capacity with an expansion to a new brewhouse
Four String Brewing Co. is increasing its production.

The Columbus-based beer maker is moving its mass brewery to a 25,000-square-foot building at 660 N. Hague Ave. The $2 million move also means an upgrade to a 30-barrel brewhouse and an almost immediate tripling of capacity, Columbus Business First journal reported on April 28.

“This allows us to open up to the rest of the state,” owner Dan Cochran said. “This will give us the beer to do that.”

Four String is maxed out at 2,500 barrels a year in its current facility at 985 W. Sixth Ave. near Grandview Heights. The plan for Hague Avenue is to crank out around 8,000 barrels annually at first with plenty of space for growth beyond that.

“That building has the room for us to expand to up to 50,000 barrels,” Cochran said.

Four String also is bringing on a new brewmaster. Columbus-native Larry Horwitz will return to town with more than 20 years of craft brewing expertise, including 12 years as the regional brewer for Iron Hill Brewery & Restaurant brewpub group in Wilmington, Delaware, where he oversaw brewing at six sites.

Horwitz, who consulted with Cochran on the brewery’s initial opening in 2011, also is buying into ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, OR: Craft Brew Alliance reconfirms 2015 guidance and outlines two-year capital expenditure plans
Craft Brew Alliance (CBA), a leading craft brewing company, announced on April 27 that it is reconfirming 2015 full year guidance and providing additional details of its capital expenditure plans for 2015 and 2016, which expand on the company’s recently announced investment projects. CBA recently announced two major brewery expansions in Hawaii and Oregon, as well as a new brewpub in Seattle. The planned investments will increase CBA’s annual brewing capacity by 300,000 barrels (BBLs) in 2017, while supporting the company’s long-term gross margin goals.

The expansion in the West reflects CBA’s commitment to growing and investing in its brands’ home markets through providing meaningful scale and flexibility to meet increasing consumer demand. Widmer Brothers Brewing, headquartered in Portland, will add an additional 200,000 BBLs to its existing brewery, while Kona Brewing, headquartered in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii, will build a new state-of-the-art 100,000 BBL brewery in its home market of Hawaii. The new Redhook Brewery brewpub will be located in one of Seattle’s historic neighbourhoods, where Redhook was founded more than 33 years ago. The brewery expansions are scheduled to be complete by early 2017, and it is anticipated that the new brewpub in Seattle will be complete by the end of ...More info on site

Burdock opened its doors at 1184 Bloor St. W. last month, offering a variety of craft beers and a locally-focussed food menu developed by chef Jeremy Dennis, who is also a musician and homebrewer.

In the back of the restaurant space, a glass-enclosed brewery is set to start up operations soon, with brewer Siobhan McPherson intending to have beer ready to pour by summer. As with the food, local ingredients will be sourced for the beer where possible.

Brewery news USA, MI: Bell’s Brewing Inc. to expand capacity within latest project
Michigan’s largest craft brewer is preparing to undertake an aggressive expansion, MiBiz reports on April 27.

Galesburg-based Bell’s Brewing Inc. plans to expand its manufacturing facility to be able to produce 1 million barrels of beer annually, up from about 319,000 barrels last year, according to industry data.

The craft brewer will add approximately 200,000 square feet to its brewing and corporate office campus in Comstock, east of Kalamazoo, according to a statement posted on the website of Detroit-based general contractor Walbridge Co., which will serve as the project’s construction manager.

"We will hopefully be able to provide you all with more of an update on this as soon as we can. In the meantime, we will continue to work hard to make this plan a reality!"

A few people already have posted on the blog, welcoming BrewDog to the state capital, which prompted the brewery to respond: "Thanks for the good wishes, we can't wait to progress discussions and hopefully get everything sorted. Columbus is a great beer town and we can't wait to play a part in that."

Stone looked into building a brewery in the community last year, ultimately deciding to open in Richmond, VA. Stone co-founder Greg Koch, who grew up in Pataskala and knew ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, OR & NC: Deschutes Brewery to expand in North Carolina
Another major craft brewer looking to grow its East Coast presence is considering North Carolina for a large-scale operation, Charlotte Business Journal reported on April 28.

Brewery of Bend, Ore., has visited the Asheville area as it scouts locations for a brewery that would come on line in 2019.

Deschutes President Michael LaLonde told the newspaper he was impressed with the quality of life and the restaurant scene and is "looking for great culture, a lot of outdoor activities - a place where employees who live here in Bend would love to go and move to an East Coast location."

LaLonde said that along with North Carolina, the company is considering spots in Greenville and Charleston, S.C., as well as Virginia and Tennessee. The company is planning for a brewery that can produce about 200,000 barrels each year and would have a work force of about 100.

Deschutes was founded in 1988 and now ships beer to 28 states (but not North Carolina) and is the eighth-largest craft brewery in the country, based on 2014 sales figures compiled by the Brewers Association.

Western North Carolina has proved to be a popular locale for craft breweries looking to reach East Coast consumers. Sierra Nevada Brewing Co. ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, LA: Flying Heart Brewing to open in Bossier City, Louisiana
On April 20, Flying Heart Brewing, located in Bossier City on 700 Barksdale Blvd, became Louisiana's 15th and Bossier City's first brewery. A grand opening celebration will be held on May 1. "We've got a lot of beer in the tanks ready to go," co-founder Ben Hart says, Best of New Orleans reports on April 27.

Flying Heart Brewing will work with Glazer Distributing to get the beer into the Bossier area, and its tap room will be open at the brewery.

Hart and his partners Jason LeBleu and Ben Patillo began homebrewing together with a clone of Samuel Smith's Oatmeal Stout. For their business, they learned as much as they could from educational institutions such as the Siebel Institute of Technology, as well as fellow craft brewers. LeBleu and Hart have backgrounds in biology; LeBleu works with the yeast, Hart focuses on hops and malts and Patillo, a water engineer, oversees water quality and filtration.

The brewery is located in a converted firehouse, which the three bought from Bossier City last year. The Flying Heart logo and name come from Hart's family's ranch in Washington State.

The three are excited to build on northwest Louisiana's growing craft beer culture, which started with Shreveport's ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, AZ: Copper Canyon Brewing Co. to join the Havasu community
Copper Canyon Brewing Company, located at 1050 N. Lake Havasu Avenue in Lake Havasu City, opened its doors on April 26, and received a positive reception from the community, Havasu News reported two days later.

“It was fantastic,” said owner Greg Wales. “It was all we hoped for. It wasn’t crazy-busy, but we were busy all day.”

Wales attributes his location in front of the London Bridge resort, and its relative distance to other bars such as Barley Brothers and Mudshark's Breweries, to a portion of his success.

“We want to make the best food and the best beer possible,” Wales said. He plans to install chalk boards throughout the brewery to show what other beers may be available at College Street Brewery, Mud Shark Brewery and Barley Brothers.

“This is about the beer, not about the business,” he said. “We’re instituting a lot of things for customers and beer lovers in the area, and we're coming up with ideas on how to create a Havasu pub crawl.”

Brewery news USA, WY: Cheyenne Brewing Company to postpone opening till June
Cheyenne Brewing Company is gearing up to start business at the Depot Plaza in Cheyenne with a bang. But structural damage has caused some delays in a soft opening. "It just seems you run into something else, so one step forward two steps back," owner Robert Fertig was quoted as saying by CBS News Channel on April 26.

Initially, the opening was supposed to take place Sunday April 26, but dealing with an old historic building comes with extra maintenance. "So there's always going to be a few issues here and there, especially mechanical."

But structure issues aside, the historic atmosphere makes for a great representation of Cheyenne's past. "Everything is original - from the wood to the clock tower to looking out the window and seeing the trains going by. It's awesome," says co-owner, Adam Filas.

This brewery is going to give an edge to Cheyenne's bar culture everyone can enjoy. "We just want to make sure we do it right the first time and make it a great experience for everyone when they come in," says Fertig.

Brewery owners hope to host a soft opening sometime this week and hope to have a grand opening in June.

Malt news Australia: Coopers planning A$60 mln investment in malting plant and upgrading of its Adelaide brewery
Coopers is planning to spend A$60 million upgrading its Regency Park, Adelaide brewery, Herald Sun reported on April 29.

The work would include a malting plant, extra car parking and creating better truck access, according to plans lodged with the state’s Development Assessment Commission this month.

Coopers management and the commission would not comment on the project or say how many jobs it would create.

The proposed malting plant would be a first for the South Rd site, which opened in 1998.

About 80 B-double trucks access the site daily to deliver beer around South Australia and interstate.

The company has already invested A$20 million since 2013 on a second bottling line, four new fermenters and improved truck access.

Port Adelaide Enfield Mayor Gary Johanson said the project would boost the state’s economy.

He said it would help ease the blow from pending job losses at Kilburn’s Bradken foundry and Holden’s Elizabeth plant.

“They (Coopers) are in a strong financial position and they are a proven brand,” Mr Johanson said.

“There would be no reason why the investment should not proceed.

“It would create some highly-skilled jobs and some of these (beer) processes are a real art form to produce the right outcome and flavours.

“It has a potential for many ...More info on site

Brewery news Norway: Carlsberg and Brooklyn Brewery to open second joint brewery, this time in Norway
Danish beer giant Carlsberg said earlier this week it is to open a second joint brewery with Brooklyn Brewery, this time in Trondheim, Norway.

The EC Dahls Brewery follows a similar project in Sweden, launched last year, and strengthens the collaboration between the Danish and New York brewers, the companies said on April 27. The latest project will see a new brewery with pub, restaurant, conference facilities and visitor centre opened at the existing Ringnes EC Dahls brewery site in Trondheim.

It is due to open in late summer next year and will produce local Dahls beer as well as new craft brands. Financial details of the tie-up have not been disclosed.

A spokesperson for Carlsberg said the new craft brands will be available in Norwegian on- and off-trade. "The ultimate ambition would be to sell internationally too, but immediate focus is limited to Norwegian market," the spokesperson added.

In April last year, Brooklyn Brewery and Carlsberg unveiled an 8,000-barrel capacity site in Stockholm, called Nya Carnegiebryggeriet (the New Carnegie Brewery). The brewery initially brewed five new beers.

Brewery news India: Diageo set to make Vijay Mallya quit United Spirits board
London-headquartered Diageo Plc, the world's largest liquor producer by revenues, is set to swing into action to ring-fence its $3 billion investment in India, VCCircle reported on April 27.

The firm is looking at options to push out Vijay Mallya out of United Spirits board after the former promoter of United Spirits Ltd (USL) appeared defiant over calls to make him step down as chairman of India's top liquor maker. Diageo's moves - to be initiated soon - would also seek to get pending dues owed by UB Group firms to USL, sources said.

Diageo owns 54.78 per cent stake in USL, while Mallya owns 4.09 per cent stake, partly through public listed holding firm United Breweries (Holdings) Ltd. Over half of UB Group's stake is pledged with financial institutions. However, UB Group is still counted as a co-promoter of the firm.

The development is related to an investigation probing irregularities over financial transactions involving USL and other UB Group firms, controlled by Mallya.

The probe covered the company's financial dealings with various UB Group companies including a loan of Rs 1,300 crore to United Breweries Holdings, which may have been further lent to Kingfisher Airlines, a defunct aviation venture of UB Group.

Brewery news Portugal: Portugal raises minimum age for alcohol sale to 18
The Portuguese Government approved amendments to legislation on alcohol, establishing a ban on the sale of alcoholic beverages to minors, ESM reported on April 27.

Currently, beer and wine sales were allowed to those older than 16 years.

A statement issued after the meeting of the Council of Ministers says that it is now forbidden to provide or sell alcoholic beverages to minors and put them at their disposal for commercial purposes, in public places and in places open to the public.

It also adds that this measure “is not intended to punish or penalise the consumer, but put barriers to access to alcohol by adolescents, adopting the recommendations of national and international specialized agencies such as the World Health Organization".

The National Spirits Association has welcomed the raising to 18 the minimum age for the consumption of all types of alcohol in the country.

For its part, the Portuguese Beer Producers Association believes that the new changes are “premature” as the existing law has been in force only for two years, after four years of discussions between the Ministry of Health and the civil society.
