The hidden treasures of hop bracts
ABSTRACT
We know we don't know everything about hops, but we're
always discovering new things! Japanese researchers
have used a novel separation technique using a sequential
liquid chromatography (LC) method in the following steps:
(1) highspeed countercurrent chromatography (HSCCC); (2)
hydrophilic interaction chromatography (HILIC) using an
amide column; and reversed-phase (RP) LC using a (3)
octadecylsily (ODS) or (4) phenyl column. The
comprehensive separation and structural analyses identified
four compounds for the first time in plants, and 20
compounds that have not been reported from hops were
also identified. Most of the compounds were hydrophilic
glycosylated and/or esterified analogues of abscisic acids,
hydroxycinnamic acids, flavonols, lignans, hydroxybenzoic
acids, or carotenoids. In addition, large amounts of highly
oligomeric proanthocyanidins were found in the hop bract
extract. Who knows, maybe these compounds will become
physiologically important in the future!

USA: Rahr Corporation announces new Rahr Malting president
|
Rahr Corporation announced on November 20 that Ron Johnson has been promoted to president of its subsidiary Rahr Malting Co., one of North America’s leading malting companies. Johnson has worked for Rahr Malting for more than 28 years.
During his career with Rahr Malting, Johnson has moved up the commercial ranks of the business from his start as a barley buyer to managing sales, supply chain, logistics, and risk management activities. As president, he will have administrative as well as profit and loss responsibility for the entire malting business, including facilities in Shakopee, Minnesota; Taft, North Dakota; and Alberta, Canada.
“Ron has been an integral part of Rahr Malting’s success and growth over the years,” said William Rahr, president and chief executive officer of Rahr Corporation. “We believe Rahr Malting is well-positioned for further growth, and Ron is the perfect person to pursue new strategies and fulfill that potential.”

EU & Japan: EU planning to talk to Japan to open its beer market to European countries within free trade agreement
|
The European Union (EU) is planning to talk to Japan on opening the latter's beer market to the European countries prior to the signing of a free trade deal in 2015, Drinks Business Review reported on November 20.
The EU countries including France and Germany will ask Japan to alter rules controlling alcoholic beverage imports, as well as product specifications, Reuters reported.
The news agency quoted an EU document as saying: "For beer, the impact on trade is rather significant.
"Many of the European beers cannot be marketed as beers in Japan because of insufficient - according to the Japanese legislation - malt content or because they have some ingredients such as coriander."
The EU-Japan trade agreement is anticipated to increase economic output of both the countries by around 1%.
Said to be the world's third largest beer market in terms of profit generation, Japan is dominated by domestic producers such as Kirin, Asahi, Sapporo and Suntory.
Europeans have a negligible presence with joint ventures allowing local production of beers such as Heineken.

South Korea: AB InBev names new CEO for Oriental Brewery
|
Anheuser-Busch InBev (AB InBev), the world's largest brewer, has named a new CEO for its Korean unit, Oriental Brewery (OB), while appointing former CEO Chang In-soo to a newly established vice chairman post, The Korea Times reported on November 20.
The move is largely seen as an effort to solidify AB InBev's control of the nation's largest brewer and create synergy with its units in other countries. In April, AB InBev acquired OB, which accounts for about 60 percent of Korea's beer market, for $5.8 billion.
OB said on November 20 that Frederico Freire, 43, former vice president of AB InBev's Asia-Pacific regional headquarters in Shanghai, will come to Korea to take the helm. Freire, born in Brazil, has been with the brewer since 1996, serving in various posts in sales, marketing and procurement.
"I am happy to be part of the OB family which has successfully transformed the company into Korea's No.1 brewer," Freire was quoted as saying by the company. "I will do my best to further strengthen OB's competitiveness and help it achieve sustainable growth by making the best use of AB InBev's global network and advanced production knowhow."

Ireland: Report shows craft beer industry is booming in Ireland
|
Minister Coveney has launched the first official development and economic impact report on microbreweries in Ireland. The report was commissioned by the Independent Craft Brewers of Ireland (ICBI), an association set up earlier this year in response to the dramatic growth within the micro brewing market in Ireland, ftt.ie reported on November 21.
Although significant growth and development within this market was noted in recent years, there was no numerical or growth research carried out prior to this to quantify the market growth and the resultant economic impact of such.
Seamus O’Hara, spokesperson for the ICBI and of Carlow Brewing Company, said: “A natural first step of an association is to establish an official piece of research on what impact its industry is having on both the national economy and on its operational market.”

Malaysia: Malaysian brewers planning to ask the government to revise its taxation strategies
|
Fearing a possible hike in taxes for alcohol, Malaysia’s brewers are planning to send a memorandum to the government to revise its taxation strategies, as a pre-emptive measure to stave off a possible increase, The Malaysian Reserve reported on November 20.
Their argument is that a hike in excise tax would be counterproductive and would hurt the beer industry and help increase the consumption of contraband beers which are priced lower than locally produced beers.
Guinness Anchor Bhd’s (GAB) MD, Hans Essaadi said the local brewery manufacturing cost has increased by 10% since 2013 due to the new transfer pricing valuation which was implemented in Nov 1 last year.
“Ad valorem tax is only imposed on the manufacturing costs of imported beers. For locally produced beers, ad valorem tax is imposed on the manufacturing costs, advertising and promotional costs as well as on the royalties.
“This has resulted in a switch in demand to imported beers, namely contraband beers which have successfully evaded tax and are priced 25% to 40% lower than locally produced beers,” said Essaadi.
Essaadi said the government should maintain and enhance its enforcement activities against contraband as its recent efforts have improved the industry’s revenue.

USA: Anheuser-Busch InBev cuts jobs in U.S.

Anheuser-Busch InBev NV confirmed it is cutting jobs and consolidating its sales division in the U.S. after the world's largest brewer posted weak third-quarter results in its largest market, marketwatch.com reported on November, 19.
AB InBev declined to specify how many employees are being laid off. The job cuts affect salaried employees in divisions ranging from marketing and procurement to sales and brewery operations, according to people familiar with the matter. One person estimated hundreds of jobs could be eliminated.
The brewer has about 15,000 employees in the U.S., where sales volumes of key brands like Budweiser and Bud Light have been declining for years. The company reported last month that earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization in the U.S. fell 2.1% in the first nine months of 2014.
Anheuser-Busch Vice President, People Jim Brickey said in a statement that the layoffs follow a "detailed business review" and reductions "were minimized as much as possible." He added, "These are always difficult decisions, but are important in evolving our business and improving our competitiveness."

New Zealand: Moa Group posts wider loss for H1 2014
|
Moa Group posted a wider first-half loss after the unprofitable boutique beer maker restructured its fledgling business and changed distribution and brewing arrangements to underpin future growth, The New Zealand Herald reported on November 19.
The Auckland-based company posted a loss of NZ$3.21 million, or 9.5 cents a share, in the six months ended Sept. 30, from a loss of NZ$3.04 million, or 10.1 New Zealand cents, a year earlier, it said in a statement.
Revenue rose 71 percent to NZ$2.5 million, while the company took a one-time charge of NZ$438,000 to write down packaging, old stock, plant and glass moulds following its decision to change its local supplier. That compares with one-time charges of NZ$353,000 in the year-earlier period to end its New Zealand and Australian distribution agreements.
Moa, headed by chief executive Geoff Ross and chairman Grant Baker who developed the 42 Below vodka brand, has changed to a more direct distribution model, contracting out brewing for many products to McCashin's brewery in Nelson and raising NZ$5.75 million from shareholders to fund growth.
The company's gross profit margin improved to 19.7 percent in the first half, from 13.6 percent a year earlier as it focused on improving New Zealand sales.

India: Beer makers to intensify lobbying for tax structure rationalisation
|
India beer makers have decided to intensify their lobbying for rationalisation of tax structure with the governments of major states across the country. To begin with, they have approached the Andhra Pradesh (AP) excise minister and apprised him of the need to tax the beverage based on the alcohol content and not to club it with spirits (hard liquor), Business Standard reported on November 16.
"We have started with AP as we came to know that the state government is on the verge of framing a new excise policy. We will take up this issue from now onwards with all the major states in the country by March 2015, before the commencement of the next financial year," All India Breweries Association (AIBA) director general, Shobhan Roy, said.
Besides tax rationalisation, the AIBA is also seeking issue of separate licences for sale of beer so that exclusive beer retail shops and consumption outlets can be established.
Roy said beer in India was taxed more than the spirits due to lack of understanding of the negative consequences of excessive consumption hard liquor. Policies in this regard were "fueled by greed not understanding".

South Korea: New Korea Craft Brewery focuses on local ingredients as much as possible

In Korea's bourgeoning craft beer scene, much attention is paid to what comes from the outside. A newly imported ale, for example, can send a wave of excitement through the community of beer enthusiasts, The Korea Times reported on November 14.
Brewers at the new Korea Craft Brewery (KCB) in Eumseong, North Chungcheong Province, however, are more excited about what Korea has to offer ― namely its local ingredients and a booming market for quality beers.
The construction of KCB - a partnership between a local entrepreneur and Japan's Kiuchi Brewery - was completed in July. The brewery has generated buzz because of the popularity of Kiuchi's Hitachino Nest beers, with their iconic "owl" logo.
"We are trying to find more natural Korean ingredients in to come up with authentic Korean flavors as well as to secure consistent supply sources," KCB director Seok Jin-young said.
The brewery was built and is operated with Korean funds, while Kiuchi supplies expertise from its master brewers. Beers brewed at the site have hit store shelves.
"The beers are definitely Korean products. Although they use the Japanese brand and craftsmanship, they are made largely with ingredients from Korea."
