The hidden treasures of hop bracts

ABSTRACT
We know we don't know everything about hops, but we're always discovering new things! Japanese researchers have used a novel separation technique using a sequential liquid chromatography (LC) method in the following steps: (1) highspeed countercurrent chromatography (HSCCC); (2) hydrophilic interaction chromatography (HILIC) using an amide column; and reversed-phase (RP) LC using a (3) octadecylsily (ODS) or (4) phenyl column. The comprehensive separation and structural analyses identified four compounds for the first time in plants, and 20 compounds that have not been reported from hops were also identified. Most of the compounds were hydrophilic glycosylated and/or esterified analogues of abscisic acids, hydroxycinnamic acids, flavonols, lignans, hydroxybenzoic acids, or carotenoids. In addition, large amounts of highly oligomeric proanthocyanidins were found in the hop bract extract. Who knows, maybe these compounds will become physiologically important in the future!

Barley news Canada: Government invests C$1.95 mln in the Canadian Malting Barley Technical Centre
Shelly Glover, Member of Parliament for Saint Boniface and Minister of Canadian Heritage and Official Languages, on behalf of Agriculture Minister Gerry Ritz, announced on November 14 an investment of C$1,950,000 to the Canadian Malting Barley Technical Centre (CMBTC) to support its market development efforts in existing and new growth markets.

With this investment, CMBTC aims to maintain and boost Canada's global competitiveness by being the focal point for technical support and market knowledge to companies involved in selling Canadian malting barley or malt to export markets. CMBTC will achieve this by providing technical training and problem-solving to stakeholders, ensuring new varieties meet international customers' needs, and providing direct sales support to international customers.

Founded in 2000, the CMBTC facilities include state-of-the art- brewing and malting equipment that allows it to duplicate any malting or brewing system in the world producing commercial quality malt and beer.

Canada's brewing industry drives C$14 billion in value-added activity and over 160,000 jobs.

Canada supplies approximately 20% of the global malting barley market and is the world's third largest exporter of malt.

This investment is being made through Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada's AgriMarketing Program, a five-year, up to C$341-million program under Growing Forward 2.

Brewery news Canada, ON: Craft beer industry develops in northeastern Ontario with new openings and expansion of existing breweries
Region joins thriving Ontario craft beer scene with opening, expansion of local breweries

The craft beer business in northeastern Ontario is gaining a full head of steam as new operations open and existing microbreweries expand, cbc.ca reported on November, 14.

With the demise of Northern Breweries in 2006, beer production largely stopped in northeastern Ontario, but the growing popularity of craft beer is putting the region back on the brewing map.

Stack Brewing in Sudbury opened in 2012 and recently purchased a new brewing system to expand its production.

Owner Shawn Mailloux said work is underway to get Stack products into LCBO stores. In the meantime, he is working to expand to markets outside of Sudbury.

"We are already too big [for Sudbury]. It's a little sooner than I expected. That's why we are starting to work a lot in North Bay and Sault Ste Marie," he said.

"You've got to go where the beer scene is. The beer scene now is Toronto and Ottawa and those markets, so it would be kind of nice if we could get some dialogues and relationships forming with those markets."

The provincial and federal governments are betting on the success of the northern beer industry. Stack Brewing received C$125,000 ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, NC: Appalachian Mountain Brewery, Inc. announced increase of Q3 revenue by 77%
Appalachian Mountain Brewery, Inc. (AMB) announced 3rd Quarter revenue increased significantly and was up 38 % to $266,283 compared to 2nd Quarter 2014 at $192,450, Globe Newswire reported on November, 17.

Revenue increased by 77% to $266,283 for Q3 2014 versus $150,703 for Q3 2013. AMB's gross margin improved during the 3rd Quarter to 76% as a result of higher sales and effective cost controls vs. 39.6% in the 2nd Quarter of 2014. "The 2nd and 3rd Quarter's of 2014 were particularly strong due to increased customer traffic at our taproom, a robust economy, successful launch of Farm To Flame, tourism in the High Country, new strategic alliances and the soft launch of our self-distribution program being head up by our new Sales Manager, Michael Schriber", said Sean Spiegelman, CEO of Appalachian Mountain Brewery, Inc.

With 2013 Craft Beer Sales up 17.2% in the US to $14.3 bln and overall US beer sales down 1.9% at $100 bln, there is a growing trend of consumers choosing a more distinctive individualistic approach to drinking beer. Considering less than 1 in 10 beers consumed in the US is craft and the current change taking place of more and more consumers drinking craft, the ...More info on site

Brewery news USA: AB InBev preparing a line extension for Bud Light
Anheuser Busch InBev is prepping a line extension for Bud Light called Mixx Tail that appears to continue the brewer's recent innovation strategy of blurring the lines between cocktails and beer, Ad Age reported on November 14.

AB InBev filed a recent trademark application for the product which lists it as a flavored beer. The company on November 14 confirmed the launch to Ad Age but did not provide other details, only saying that it would debut this spring.

One of the brewer's distributors recently tweeted about the launch, saying the product would come in flavors such as Hurricane, Firewalker and Long Island Ice Tea.

AB InBev, the world's largest brewer, already sells a version of the product in Argentina where the product is sold under the Quilmes brand name.

The brewer did not share marketing details on the U.S. launch. But typically AB InBev puts significant money behind products that carry the Bud Light name. For instance, the launch of higher-alcohol line extension Bud Light Platinum in early 2012 was accompanied with a Super Bowl ad. And the brewer continues to invest behind its Bud Light Ritas franchise, which is a line of fruity, margarita-inspired flavored malt beverages.

Brewery news USA, MO: Boulevard Brewing to expand fermentation capacity by 40%
Boulevard Brewing has started construction on an expansion project in Kansas City, Missouri which will increase the company's fermentation capacity by 40%, The Drinks Business Reveiw reported on November, 13.

The $12mln Cellar Five project includes a fermentation facility spanning 3,600ft2 with six 1,000-barrel fermenters, as well as 8,400ft2 two-story utility and process building.

An additional $2.5mln will be invested in an effluent equalization system and filtration centrifuge.

Boulevard Brewing Engineering director Mike Utz said: "We've been planning Cellar Five for the better part of two years.

"It's an exciting and challenging project, as it will house our largest fermentation tanks to date. The new structures will complement the appearance of the adjacent Cellar Three, with design elements from our Brewhouse Two building."

Both the facilities are expected to become operational in 2015.

Boulevard also plans to launch a few new markets in the first quarter of 2015.

Brewery news USA & CA: Kona Brewing Company expands distribution to Canada
Kona Brewing Company has announced its island brews will be available throughout British Columbia beginning in late November, The Drinks Business Review reported on November, 13.

Kona beers will make their official Canadian debut at the Hopscotch Whisky Beer and Spirits Festival to be held November 21-22 at The Grand Tasting Hall in Vancouver, B.C., and will roll out in Alberta on December 1st. Draft will be available in both provinces starting early January 2015. Distribution is made possible through partner Beerthirst, and this marks the first time the Hawaiian brewer will have both on and off-premise distribution in Canada.

"For more than a decade, Kona has been bringing its Hawaiian Liquid Aloha to thirsty fans across the mainland," said Kona Brewing Company brand manager Aaron Marion. "Our pubs in Kona and Oahu attract nearly one million visitors a year, and Hawaii is a top destination for Canadian travelers who have long been asking when we'll bring Liquid Aloha to their door. We're stoked to help our new ohana in the north relive their island memories by enjoying their favorite Kona brew back at home."

With a footprint of 40 U.S. states and 16 countries, Kona Brewing will be entering the Canadian market ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, CO: The Telluride Brewing Company to expand by installing a new grain silo
The Telluride Brewing Company (TBC) broke ground on the site of a new grain silo — set to be delivered in mid December — that will cut costs and ensure product consistency for the award-winning brewery, telluridenews.com reported on November, 16.

The new silo will be delivered the week of Dec. 15 and hold 50,000 pounds of grain, allowing for more consistent quality in the beer according to brewmaster and co-founder Chris Fish.

“The silo will help us be more consistent with our product,” Fish said.

Currently, the brewery purchases their grain, which makes up 70 to 90 percent of a beer, in 50-pound bags which are delivered weekly. Using small batches of grain can lead to product inconsistency, according to Fish.

“With the silo we can contract our base malt out,” he said. “At harvest time I can pick the lot I want and have it be pretty consistent for the whole year. There are much more variations when you’re buying 50 pound bags.”

The silo will also reduce costs at the brewery, which could lead to further expansion.

“The silo is going to save us a ton of money,” TBC president Tommy Thacher said. “Right now we’re buying all our grain on pallets. Being ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, CO: FATE Brewing to expand space and production capacity
A major expansion is coming to Boulder’s FATE Brewing Co., not yet two years old, The Denver Post reported on November, 14.

The brew pub, known best for its kolsch beers, bucked Colorado’s recent trend of new breweries opening neighborhood taprooms, instead opting for a full-scale restaurant, with its beers sharing taps with drafts from other breweries. The expansion, set to start next month and finish early next year, will nearly double FATE’s fermentation space.

It also includes the acquisition of 2,500 square feet next door. The newly added space will house a barrel aging room and packaging facility, both aimed at expanding the brewery’s production capacity (nearly doubling it) and its range of offerings. FATE is adding five fermenters that will accommodate three to 30 barrels each.

“We knew that increased production capacity would be a goal at some point down the road,” FATE owner Mike Lawinski said. “Never did we imagine it could happen so quickly, but we have hit capacity and we need more space to keep up.”

Brewery news USA, GA: Creature Comforts Brewing Co. launches first canned beer and plans to double production in 2015
Twelve pallets of canned Creature Comforts Brewing Co. beer were loaded onto trucks headed to Athens bars and retail establishments for the first time last week, a dream-come-true for local beer lovers and the first move in the young company’s next phase of growth, onlineathens.com reported on November, 12.

Of the brewery’s four core offerings, Tropicalia and Athena are the first to hit the shelves, and suggested retail for a six-pack is about $10. Reclamation Rye and Bibo, the brewery’s Czech-style Pilsner will come later.

The canning line — a contraption that fills and tops 40 cans per minute — is a testament to the rapid growth the brewery has seen in its first six months.

Draught sales have also continued to climb since the brewery’s first month, which saw 50 barrels out the door, to 230 barrels in October.

“We knew Athens drank, but we didn’t know they drank quite that much,” Herron joked.

Now, with operations aimed at producing about 4,000 barrels per year, brewing capacity will double in early 2015, he said, with future plans to produce up to 20,000 barrels per year.

“We’ve had a lot of ups and downs, and we’re still learning very much,” he said. “We’ve run out ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, PA: Spring House Brewing expansion to be completed by spring
Next May or so, Spring House Brewing’s new city brewery and brew pub will be operational, replacing a smaller brewery in Conestoga, lancasteronline.com reported on November, 13. That’s when Keasey will no longer need to ration how much of his Spring House Brewing beer he sells to his wholesale distributors.

“It’s difficult,” said Keasey, the founder, brewmaster and co-owner.

“(Wholesalers) always try to get a little more out of us.”

“Hopefully in six months, we’ll be able to give them what they want and have the capacity to open some new markets too.”

Keasey took a major step toward that goal when his company bought its future home for $480,000.

A new brewery to be built in the idle city property will be capable of producing 10,000 barrels of beer annually.

That will be more than triple the Conestoga location’s capacity of 3,000 barrels.

The new brewery will be complemented by a brew pub of 150 or more seats.

Renovations and equipment for the Hazel Street facility, on top of the price of the property, will push the total project cost beyond $2 mln.

City zoners in May approved a special exception to allow a brewery at the property, which is zoned for manufacturing.

To create space for the brewery ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, MI: Farmington Brewing Company opened in downtown Farmington
Jason and Gary Schlaff and Jason Henricks are the beer-loving guys behind Farmington's newest commercial venture, the Farmington Brewing Company, which is taking its place among Michigan's 186 breweries, hometownlife.com reported on November, 13.

The team purchased equipment from Psycho Brew, a Michigan company, for half the price of others they researched. And better yet, the equipment is made with Michigan steel. Staying with Michigan, the men have also purchased some of the brewing ingredients from Michigan farmers, Hendricks said.

"You want to plan for success. You need to find the right location. That is key," Gary said.

Now some 18 months later, the team had a grand opening on Nov. 15 at their storefront brewery in downtown Farmington.

"We were unbelievably fortunate this building was available," Gary said, referring to the former Meantobe Cafe. The site was already complete with the water, drains and the electrical that was needed for the brewery.

Support and networking have helped the team as they proceeded from planning to reality. They have relied on suggestions and recommendations from other brewers, as well as meeting nearby businesses in Farmington. The brewing company will not offer food, but will allow patrons to bring in food or have it delivered. ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, OH: Numbers Brewing Company to open in Lisbon
Jeramy DeBord, a local entrepreneur from Lisbon, is looking to flip the old liquor store on North Beaver Street and to turn it into Lisbon’s first microbrewery, wkbn.com reported on November, 17.

“We think we might be the furthest along. I’m not 100 percent sure on that but we will most likely be the first in Lisbon and from there who knows,” said DeBord.

The new brewery will be called Numbers Brewing Company and being Lisbon’s first microbrewing company, it will be a fully local brewing company taking advantage of other local business in Lisbon.

“First of all, a new business generates tax revenue for the area. Also, we will be adding some jobs. At this point we don’t have a firm grasp on how many that will depend on how successful the business is, but one of the other things that we will do as a member of the business community we will buy locally, we’ll use as much local product as we can to produce,” said DeBord.

Although it’s about three or four months away from completing construction on Lisbon’s newest addition, DeBord said that there is still more work to be done even after completion.

“Probably a couple of months to go ...More info on site

Brewery news Belgium: AB InBev faces tax authority investigation
Anheuser-Busch InBev NV said Belgian tax inspectors are seeking to investigate a unit of the world’s biggest brewer, Bloomberg reported on November 13.

“The Belgian Special Tax Inspection Authorities wishes to look into what would be the most appropriate fiscal treatment for one of our subsidiaries, Ampar BVBA,” Karen Couck, a spokeswoman for the Budweiser maker, said by e-mail. She said the company can’t comment further as discussions started recently.

AB InBev complies with all fiscal rules and regulations in Belgium and other countries where it does business, Couck said.

Multinational tax avoidance has become a top political issue across Europe. On November 12, European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker responded to disclosures by the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists about favorable tax deals that Luxembourg entered into with hundreds of big companies. Juncker had previously served as Luxembourg’s prime minister for almost 19 years.

The European Commission is probing the terms of tax deals granted by Luxembourg, the Netherlands and Ireland to multinationals including Apple Inc., Starbucks Corp. and Fiat Finance and Trade Ltd. The commission said in September that Ireland and Luxembourg had provided illegal state aid to Apple and Fiat through deals that didn’t comply with international tax rules. Brewery news Vietnam: Beer manufacturers oppose government plans to introduce beer stamping requirements
Vietnam’s beer manufacturers believe the requirement that they need to stamp their products will increase their production costs and weaken competitiveness, Vietnamnet.Brigde reported on November 17.

The Ministry of Industry and Trade (MOIT) plans to ask beer manufacturers to stamp their products to help state management agencies prevent tax evasion and trade fraud. However, enterprises have opposed the plan.

Tran Dinh Thanh, deputy general director of Habeco, said breweries will have to buy more machines for the stamping, which will be a technical problem for enterprises because of the limited number of stamping machine suppliers.

“There are very few companies in the world making stamping machines, because the stamping policy is now being applied in only three to four countries in the world,” Thanh said.

Nguyen Thanh Ha from S&B Law Firm noted that the current laws require manufacturers to give detailed information on products’ labels, and there is no need to request manufacturers to stamp their products as well.

According to Ha, the stamping is now required for helmets and tobacco products as well, but it is still unclear about the efficiency of the policy.

Therefore, Ha said MOIT would “make an unnecessary requirement” when forcing manufacturers to stamp their beer products.

Brewery news South Africa: SABMiller starts own craft beer in South Africa
SABMiller — the world’s No. 2 brewer by earnings — has started its own craft beer in South Africa. The beer — No. 3 Fransen Street — is named after a brewery SABMiller opened in 1998 to experiment with beer in small batches, according to a report in Euronews.

The strategy is similar to the one SABMiller uses in the U.S., where it sells the Blue Moon craft beer, the report said.

In doing so, SABMiller is competing with Ndumiso Madlala and hundreds of other microbrewers in South Africa’s burgeoning craft beer scene.

Madlala’s brewery, Soweto Gold, is a first for the sprawling township and produces as much beer a month as SABMiller makes every six minutes. But that may be enough to cause a stir in SABMiller’s long domination of the South African beer market, Euronews reports.

South African craft brewers are gaining momentum.

While craft brews are mostly aimed at wealthier South Africans, Madlala says Soweto Gold’s appeal lies in its township roots.

Mauricio Leyva, a managing director at SAB, said there’s space for everyone to play in the growing beer category. “The more people that move into beer, the better for all,” he told Euronews. “We like to see it as a ...More info on site

Brewery news Greece & Australia: Greek Nissos beer making debut in Australia
Nissos, a 'boutique' beer produced in the heart of the Aegean Sea on the island of Tinos, is making its debut in Australia. Considering its award-winning journey within only 15 months of the production of its first bottle, this Greek craft beer coming to Australia is set to deliver a new refreshing experience for all those who appreciate a good beer, Neos Kosmos reported on November 17.

At a time when businesses in Greece were shutting down the one after the other, four aspirational people - Alexandros Kouris, the well-known in Greece travel journalist Maya Tsokli, and Elina and Kostis Dalas - decided to set the foundation stone of their microbrewery Nissos.

"It has been created from scratch as a greenfield project, privately financed. Nevertheless, in a very short space of time, Nissos beer achieved a high level of brand awareness and recognition among consumers and professionals alike as a great tasting premium craft beer from the Cyclades," said Alexandros Kouris.

"In Greece and within only a few months of commercial operation, our brand has managed to establish a strong presence in leading restaurants throughout the Cyclades, as well as at trendy venues in Athens, Thessaloniki and elsewhere in Greece. Nissos has also ...More info on site

Brewery news India: SABMiller India appoints new MD
SABMiller India Pvt. Ltd, India’s second-largest brewer, has appointed Shalabh Seth as managing director (MD), replacing Grant Liversage, who is returning to South Africa after less than 18 months in charge of the company, Livemint reported on November 16.

Seth, who has held various roles at SABMiller India, including that of sales director, since joining the company in 2003, will take over from Liversage starting January, the company said in a statement.

Liversage replaced Paolo Lanzarotti as SABMiller India managing director in August 2013. With Seth’s appointment, SABMiller India will have had four different managing directors in the past eight years or so.

SABMiller India, owner of Foster’s and Haywards beer, has lost market share to rivals United Breweries Ltd and newer entrant Carlsberg over the past few years with analysts blaming management issues.

SABMiller Plc, the parent company of SABMiller India, entered the country in 2000 by acquiring Narang Breweries. It built its business in India through more acquisitions, including that of Shaw Wallace and Foster’s India, and emerged as the biggest rival to market leader United Breweries, owner of Kingfisher beer. However, newer entrants Carlsberg and Anheuser-Busch InBev have been quicker in launching brands and spotting consumer preferences ...More info on site
