If you don't, it may be worthwhile to take a closer look
as these German researchers did. They measured the
content of calcium, magnesium, iron, copper and
zinc throughout the whole brewing process. In a
comparison with malt and yeast, hops contained
more calcium and iron. 96% of all metal ions were
malt derived, where as hops contributed 2.8%, yeast
1% and 0.2% by water. They found that during the
brewing process the highest amount of metal ions
were discharged with the spent grain. Of the total
intake only 0.1% of iron, 0.4% of zinc, 3.1% of
copper, 6.3% of calcium and 15.1% of magnesium
made it into the final beer.

USA: Beer sales expected to increase again this summer
|
As the weather begins to heat up this summer in the US, so will beer sales, said the Beer Institute, a trade association representing both large and small brewers.
According to the organization, which cites data from Nielsen, a consumer trends agency, more than 38 million American households will spend upwards of a collective $11 billion on beer this summer.
In 2013, beer sales actually topped $11 billion in the 15 weeks between Memorial Day and Labor Day. That figure, according to Andrea Riberi, senior vice president at Nielsen, made beer one of the best selling categories across all food and beverage channels in the time span.
None of this comes as a shock to Chris Thorne, vice president of communications with the Beer Institute.
“It’s really no surprise that beer will be the top choice at celebrations and occasions across America this summer,” he said in a statement. “Beer brings people together. And beer’s low ABV means it can be enjoyed responsibly.”
But it’s no longer just the large domestic brewers relying on a surge in summer sales to help meet yearly sales goals.

Beer blog Ottawa Beer Events reports that the ever-growing craft brewing community in the Capital Region will soon have another member, with the opening later this year of Bicycle Craft Brewery.
Founded by the husband and wife team of Fariborz and Laura Behzadi, Bicycle will be a “traditional, all grain, small batch brewery” with a distinctive line-up of beers, as Fariborz describes:
We will have 4 flagship brews, including our hoppy and bitter Velocipede IPA and our bitter-sweet and smokey Abyss Chocolate Stout. Our session ale, Belle River Blonde, is refreshing and easy on the palate, while our Base Camp Oatmeal Porter is nutty and smooth and will remind you of the comforts of base camp. We will also offer a variety of limited edition and seasonal brews that use local ingredients including a Pumpkin Spice Ale, a Christmas Ale and a colourful Raspberry Wheat Ale. A unique feature of our brewery is that Laura will be taking an active part in the brew process and will also feature special brews of her own, including one that will be released on International Women’s Day every year.

Strike Brewing Company is nearing completion on a brewery and tap room in San Jose that could produce up to 5,000 barrels of beer annually, SanJose.com reported on May 22.
The space on 10th Street takes up just under 6,000-square-feet of a large 90,000 square-foot warehouse building about a mile south of downtown San Jose.
The idea for Strike originated in 2008, stemming from a love for home brewing and the observation that there was a dearth of options for drinkers wanting a full-flavored beer with relatively low alcohol content.
Co-founders and South Bay residents CEO Jenny Lewis and brewmaster Drew Ehrlich wanted to make sure their first releases emphasized session beers with less than 5 percent ABV.
They also connected their brand to beer drinkers who lived very active lifestyles. Lewis was a collegiate swimmer at Rice University while Ehrlich played baseball at Stanford, eventually playing a couple years professionally with the Red Sox organization. Their commitment to starting Strike led Lewis to embark on an MBA program while Ehrlich spent those years gaining professional brewing experience.

Canada, ON: Collingwood Brewery operational just over a year after first announced
|
Just over a year after it was first announced, the Collingwood Brewery became the first of three planned breweries in Collingwood to open its doors to the public on May 17, just in time to satisfy the May long weekend thirst of local beer drinkers, Canadian Beer News reported.
Founded by partners Tim Cachia, Art Joyce, Greg Widell and Chris Freeman, the brewery launched with a single flagship brand – Downhill Pale Ale, a 5.4% American-style pale ale – which is available in 473 ml cans and 30 litre kegs at the brewery store and tasting room.
Collingwood Brewery will be open for retail sales on Friday through Sunday in coming weeks.

USA, KY: Animal nutrition company planning distillery and brewery in eastern Kentucky
|
An animal nutrition company plans to begin operating a distillery and brewery in eastern Kentucky, Daily News reported on May 19.
Alltech has agreed to purchase a former funeral home in downtown Pikeville that will serve as the location.
The company already operates a brewery and distillery central Kentucky and a distillery in Ireland, where Alltech founder Pearse Lyons is from.
Some leaders in economically depressed eastern Kentucky are looking to tourism to help reinvigorate the region, and they are using the success of Gatlinburg, Tennessee, as a model.
One major draw to that area is the Ole Smoky Moonshine Distillery.
Alltech has diverse interests, but recently has focused efforts in Ireland.
"When I think of Eastern Kentucky and I think of Pikeville, I think of Ireland and its history," Lyons said.
"The connections are phenomenal. ... From the bluegrass music that we call traditional music here to our history of whiskey, the connections run deep," Lyons said. "Therefore, for me to get involved in Pikeville and Eastern Kentucky, it is just natural. Our vision with this project is not only about job creation but making Eastern Kentucky more of a destination and economic hub."

USA, CT: Back East Brewing to double facility size
|
Back East Brewing, open less than two years, is planning to double the size of its Bloomfield facility, The Courant reported on May 23.
The brewery, which makes more than a dozen craft beers seasonally and year-round, will be expanding from 4,500 square feet to 9,000 square feet.
The main purpose of the expansion is to increase Back East's brewing capacity from 2,500 barrels a year to 4,500 barrels to keep up with growing demand.
"It's just the demand in the market," CEO and co-founder Tony Karlowicz said.
Karlowicz said the company also expects to add two more full-time employees to the four it currently has.
The expansion has been in the works several months as the company worked on financing the project. Karlowicz said that Back East has raised $200,000 from more than a dozen investors. A portion of the expansion is also expected to be financed through a $175,000 small business express loan the company has applied for from the state's Department of Economic and Community Development.
The expansion project, which will involve the company taking over an identically sized empty warehouse area adjacent to its current location on Blue Hills Avenue, is expected to begin in early June and be completed by October.

Canada, BC: Construction of Powell Street Craft Brewery’s new facility underway
|
Just over a year after it opened as a small brewery in East Vancouver – aka “Yeast Van” – Powell Street Craft Brewery has announced plans for a move and expansion that will see them progress from nanobrewery to microbrewery status, Canadian Beer News reported on May 22.
As announced in the brewery’s weekly newsletter, the new location for the brewery is several blocks away but still on Powell Street. Construction is underway now, with the move expected in late summer, and capacity to increase to microbrewery levels throughout the fall.

USA, PA: Molly Pitcher Brewing Co. coming to Carlisle this summer

Molly Pitcher Brewing Co. will begin brewing this summer in Carlisle, Pennlive.com reported on May 21.
The microbrewery and taproom will open at 10 E. South St., and joins a growing list of new breweries including Alter Ego Brewing in Harrisburg and Moo-Duck Brewing in Elizabethtown popping up on the Central Pennsylvania beer scene.
Molly Pitcher operations manager Mike Moll said the facility will include an open floor plan with a 30-seat taproom serving light fare. Patrons will be able to watch the brewing operations from the taproom.
Molly Pitcher is the brainchild of four partners, all Carlisle residents and avid homebrewers, who along with Moll, include brewmaster Zachary Ziegler, brewer Tim Fourlas and CFO Brandon Bear.
Together, they have a combined 30 years experience in home brewing.
"It's always been something each of us has talked about and wanted to do for a long time, and we finally decided to make it happen instead of just talking about it," Moll said.
Molly Pitcher will brew on a seven barrel system with an estimated initial capacity of 700 to 1,000 barrels, he said.

World: SABMiller completes $3.5 billion loan refinancing
|
Global brewer SABMiller has completed a $3.5 billion loan refinancing, amending and extending an existing $2.5 billion syndicated loan and agreeing a new $1 billion syndicated facility, Reuters reported on May 22.
The existing undrawn $2.5 billion financing, which was originally agreed in 2011 via coordinating banks Bank of America Merrill Lynch and Commerzbank, was due to mature in April 2018. The facility has been extended to May 2019 with the option of a further two one-year extension options, SABMiller said in its preliminary results on May 22.
SABMiller has joined other highly-rated European corporates like Volkswagen and Anglo American in taking advantage of competitive loan market conditions to agree cut-price amend and extends, which allow companies to extend maturities and cut pricing on existing deals while only paying a small amendment fee rather than a new set of fees for a full refinancing.
BBB+/Baa1 rated SABMiller paid a margin of 60 basis points (bps) over Libor on the existing facility but average investment-grade pricing has fallen sharply since last year with Triple B companies pricing at around 35 bps, according to Thomson Reuters LPC data.

The Netherlands: Dutch brewers ask for lower beer excises to reverse decline in sales
|
The Dutch Government should lower the excise duty on beer, to reverse a decline in sales and preserve jobs in the industry, Dutch brewers' association, Nederlandse Brouwers, warned recently.
The association noted that the 30 percent tax hike in 2009 caused beer sales to plummet by 6.7 percent, while the 10 percent rise last year led to a further 3 percent decline in the market. Excise duty on beer, which currently stands at EUR37.96 (USD52.1) per hectolitre, has increased by almost 80 percent since 2000, it explained. It said that consumers are instead opting to purchase beer abroad where tax rates are lower.
Nederlandse Brouwers highlighted the importance of the Dutch beer industry to the nation's economy, pointing out that approximately 85 percent of beer consumed in the Netherlands is brewed in the Netherlands, and that the country is the fourth largest beer exporter in the world.
The beer sector pays about EUR2.2 bln in tax every year, of which EUR390 mln is in excise duty and EUR800 mln is in value-added tax (VAT), the group said. It said that 2,000 jobs are at risk if excise duty is not cut.

Australian beer drinkers are shunning traditional brands like VB, Carlton Draught and Crown Lager due to high-end competition and less demand for tap beer, The Age reported on May 23.
Brewing giant SABMiller said three of its top Australian brands recorded falls in volumes over the past year as "competitive intensity," persisting economic uncertainty and weak consumer sentiment hurt the company's share of lager.
"Victoria Bitter declined by one per cent and Crown Lager declined, reflecting both a strong prior year comparative and price compression from imported brands," London-listed SABMiller said in its March 2014 full year results.
The company also indicated that pub drinkers were turning their backs on popular tap beers.
"Carlton Draught was impacted by its exposure to the more depressed on-premise channel," SABMiller said.
Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) figures released in April found Australian drinkers consumed less beer in 2013 than they have in the past 67 years.
Meanwhile, anecdotal evidence suggests craft beers are gaining favour over mainstream brands.
Still, SAB managed to report strong volume growth in its mainstream Carlton Dry and Carlton Mid brands as it looks to promote its premium beers.

China: Craft beer scene getting more exciting

After years of swilling cheap mass-produced domestic beers like Yanjing, Tsingtao and Snow, Chinese microbrewers are starting to make a splash in Beijing’s craft beer scene, China Realtime reported on May 23.
Once primarily the bailiwick of expats, China’s own brewers are opening storefronts as more domestic consumers warm up to the idea of sipping a cold one that isn’t found in a convenience store. “A lot of Chinese young guys are getting involved,” says Pan Dinghao, founder of one such local pub, Panda Brew.
The emerging domestic brews aren’t yet comparable to Western craft brews — many have muted flavors that fall somewhere above a Yanjing but aren’t quite up to par with, say, the Honey Ma at American-owned and operated Great Leap Brewing — but there’s growing enthusiasm to educate the Chinese on flavorful indie-made beers.
Last year in Beijing, Yin Hai opened NBeer Pub, a brightly-lit joint that includes 37 taps and 13 fermentation tanks. The pub currently has 25 domestic beers on tap, ranging from classic lagers to ales made with organic fruits and aged in local wood. Many are from microbrewers in other Chinese cities, including Master Gao’s brewery in Nanjing and Chengdu’s Zhanchun Brewing.

Hungary: Benedictine Abbey of Pannonhalma to build its own brewery
|
The Benedictine Abbey of Pannonhalma in Hungary will build its own brewery to produce premium beer, the abbey said in a statement on May 22.
The Pannonhalma Abbey Beer Manufacture will be set up to revive an old tradition and start brewing three or four premium-category beer from the autumn.
The brewery will be part of a scheme to offer visitors a broad scale of locally made premium products, which already include chocolate, wine and perfumes.
The abbey will soon also start bottling and selling mineral water under its own label.
The Pannonhalma Abbey with a history of more than 1,000 years in north-western Hungary is a UNESCO World Heritage site.
