Do you know the metal levels of your raw materials?

ABSTRACT
If you don't, it may be worthwhile to take a closer look as these German researchers did. They measured the content of calcium, magnesium, iron, copper and zinc throughout the whole brewing process. In a comparison with malt and yeast, hops contained more calcium and iron. 96% of all metal ions were malt derived, where as hops contributed 2.8%, yeast 1% and 0.2% by water. They found that during the brewing process the highest amount of metal ions were discharged with the spent grain. Of the total intake only 0.1% of iron, 0.4% of zinc, 3.1% of copper, 6.3% of calcium and 15.1% of magnesium made it into the final beer.

Brewery news USA, ME: Maine’s craft beer industry expected to grow 200 per cent in the coming four years
Maine's craft beer industry is expected to grow 200 per cent during the coming four years, Maine News reported on May 17.

The Maine Brewers Guild said on 15 May, 2014 that the industry is expected to record strong growth during the coming years. The estimates are backed by a study conducted by economists at the University of Maine. It found that Maine breweries were able to sell $92.6 Million worth of beer during 2013. They employed around 1500 workers across the state.

Estimates showed that impact on the Maine economy in 2013 for Maine Craft beer is $189 million. The study also found that Maine brewers plan to boost production by 36 per cent between 2013 and 2014 and by 200 per cent by the year 2018.

The data was gathered from 35 breweries that were operating in Maine in 2013 and there are more than 53 breweries in operation and another 5 are expected to open shortly.

Dan Kleban, owner of Maine Beer Co. and president of the Maine Brewers Guild, said, "The future is bright for Maine craft beer. We are creating sustainable manufacturing jobs, driving tourism, and supporting allied industries like Maine farms."

Brewery news USA, PA: Roundabout Brewery granted a brewpub license
Steve Sloan, who is opening Roundabout Brewery on Butler Street in Lawrenceville, is ready to serve up his beers by the pint, Pittsburgh Business Times reported on May 20.

After launching his Roundabout Brewing Co. on Butler Street last year by selling his beers in growlers last year, Sloan and his wife Dyana recently were granted a brewpub license, allowing the brewery to sell its beers by the glass.

"We're excited about the next step here," said Sloan, who opened Roundabout last summer.

As part of the expansion, Roundabout has also added a new fermenter that will help increase the amount of beer it can make by 50 percent. Sloan said the new licensing and the added equipment gives him greater flexibility of what to make and serve.

He's also added two more taps, growing the number of beers he can sell at any one time from five to seven.

Sloan, a former brewer of the year at the Great American Beer Festival, expects some beers will be better to serve by the glass than the growler.

Brewery news USA, OR & WI: Deschutes beers to hit Wisconsin shelves on July 1
Move over Wisconsin-made brews, Deschutes Brewery, which is based in Oregon, will bring its beer to Wisconsin store shelves on July 1 through a deal with beer distributor Wirtz Beverage Wisconsin, Milwaukee Business Journal reported on May 19.

Deschutes makes a number of beers including Mirror Pond Pale Ale, Black Butte Porter, Chainbreaker White IPA, and Twilight Summer Ale.

“Wirtz Beverage has been a great partner for us in other markets and we’re looking forward to complementing their beer portfolio in Wisconsin with our handcrafted beers," said Stacy Denbow, expansion manager for the brewery.

Deschutes Brewery will also have launch events the week of July 14, 2014.

“Wisconsin is home to beer lovers and there’s no doubt Deschutes’ entry into the market with some of their most well-loved brands causes great excitement,” said Nate Phippen, vice president of sales for Wirtz Beverage Wisconsin. “We’re extremely proud to play a role in bringing their beers here and confident Wisconsin will be a huge opportunity for them.”

Wirtz Beverage, a division of Chicago's Wirtz Corp., is also supporting the company by having a statewide craft beer team, which includes beverage industry experts and beer aficionados who will focus on brand education and sales. The team consists of ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, OH: Rhinegeist Brewery receives state tax credits allowing it to expand
Rhinegeist, the growing Over-the-Rhine brewery, received state tax credits on May 20 that will allow it to bring 40 new jobs, retain 15 existing jobs and invest $6.5 million in an expansion of its current facility’s production capability, Cincinnati Business Courier reported.

The Ohio Tax Credit Authority approved the 40 percent job creation tax credit. That means Rhinegeist’s state corporate income taxes will be 40 percent less on income it generates beyond what it already earns today.

Under the agreement with the state, Rhinegeist has to maintain operations at its site for at least eight years. Rhinegeist distributes kegged and canned beer and operates a large tap room where it often holds events at 1910 Elm St.

Rhinegeist expects to have $1.2 million in additional annual payroll by Dec. 1, 2016.

“The company is seeking to expand in the brewery districts of Cincinnati or in Northern Kentucky,” according to details of the agreement published by the authority. “Support will ensure the company continues to grow in Ohio.”

REDI Cincinnati, the state’s economic development partner in southwest Ohio, hailed the agreement, along with a move by the Ohio Controlling Board to approve a Clean Ohio Assistance Fund request for $736,520 that will be used to clean ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, NY: The Iron Flamingo Brewery expected to open this summer in Corning, NY
Corning's popular brewpub, Market Street Brewing Company, has something special on tap for its customers, TWC News reported on May 19.

“We've been here for 17 years, and we know what people like and it was time to take to step,” said Pelham McClellan, brewer and co-owner of Market Street Brewing Company.

The owners of Market Street Brewing Company, in a joint venture with two other friends, are opening a new microbrewery in the city. The Iron Flamingo will feature three of the brewpubs flagship beers. The owners say they've had a hard time keeping up with the high demand for their specialty beers at their current location.

“We have a seven barrel system which means we produce a little under 200 gallons of beer. In the summertime, we'll go through that within two to three weeks,” said McClellan.

The Iron Flamingo adds to a growing list of microbreweries in the region. There were about 24 microbreweries in the Finger Lakes region in 2011. That number has nearly tripled since then. Statewide, the number of microbreweries has gone from 85 to 154 in the last two years, contributing to overall economic impact of more than $2.2 billion annually.

Barley news USA: Movement of barley off farm still slow
Steady market prices and not much barley moving to markets – these are things Marvin Zutz, Minnesota Barley Growers Association executive director, has grown accustomed to expect in recent months. But the USDA planting intentions report that was issued at the end of March was surprising to him, The Prairie Star reported on May 17.

“I was fairly impressed with the numbers that came out, both for Minnesota and North Dakota,” Zutz said, referring to the planned number of barley acres. “The numbers were stronger than what I was led to believe going into that report. But they may come in a little lower now with the late spring we are having.”

Minnesota growers actually indicated they were going to plant 11 percent more barley in 2014, with 100,000 planned. Meanwhile across the border, North Dakota producers were expecting to plant 650,000 acres, a decrease of 14 percent.

Canadians are also looking at lower barley acres. Statistics Canada is expecting 6.3 million acres of barley will be planted this year, down from 7.08 million last year and 7.4 million in 2012. Only a decade ago, Canadian farmers seeded nearly 11 million acres of barley.

Movement of barley off the farm is still slow, Zutz ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, CO: Sanitas Brewing Co. amid multi-pronged expansion effort
Sanitas Brewing Co., which opened last September in Boulder, is a contributing member to the craft brewery boom, Daily Camera reported on September 19.

Not even a year into the game, the startup is taking big strides to ensure its longevity if the upswing busts.

The fledgling Sanitas is in the throes of a multi-pronged expansion effort designed to help the brewery churn out more beers, create unique offerings and gain a wider following.

"We really made a decision to up that ante," said Michael Memsic, a former Boulder Beer brewer who founded Sanitas with Chris Coyne and Zach Nichols.

Last week, Sanitas dropped in a 60-barrel fermentation tank at its 3550 Frontier Ave. warehouse unit off Pearl Parkway.

The new arrival joins a 15-barrel brewhouse, three 15-barrel fermentation tanks and a 60-barrel fermenter to up the brewery's capacity by more than 50 percent in one fell swoop, Memsic said.

On the docket next is the expected arrival of 200 additional kegs, which will allow Sanitas to land its beers on more taps in a wider swath of Colorado's Front Range.

The aim, Memsic said, is to hook up more draft accounts and spread distribution outside the Boulder region to Denver and Fort Collins.

The third move involves ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, NC: Charlotte’s Four Friends Brewing has shut down
Four Friends Brewing, which had been up and running in Charlotte since 2010, has shut down, according to its Facebook page. The brewery was best known for its I-77 IPA, but had struggled in a marketplace that's become increasingly more crowded in Charlotte.

Four Friends incorporated in 2007 and opened in 2010. It was Charlotte's second oldest craft brewery, behind Olde Mecklenburg Brewery, which opened in 2009. While Olde Meck stuck to German-style beers, Four Friends was more experimental. "Four Friends was Charlotte's first brewery that came in and did something different," says Daniel Hartis of charlottebeer.com. At first, its owners tried out British style ales but saw more of a demand for IPAs, he said.

Once NoDa Brewing and Birdsong Brewing opened in 2011, Four Friends began to fade. "They weren't as present from a marketing standpoint as some of the new breweries," says Hartis. It took them longer to open up a tap room at their brewery in Steele Creek, while Olde Meck, NoDa and Birdsong had tap rooms running immediately after they opened.

Four Friends says its beer will be available at local bars and restaurants until it runs out.

Brewery news USA, WI: Door County Brewing Co. to open on May 24
What its owners hope will be a new Door County destination opens its doors Saturday, May 24 in a former feed mill and grocery store in Baileys Harbor. The Door County Brewing Co. unveiled its repurposed tasting room during a “soft opening” party over the previous weekend, doorcountyadvocate.com reported on May 20.

As John McMahon welcomed visitors on May 17, he said the renovations inside were done for the benefit of the community.

“We want to make everybody proud of what we’ve done, and we want it to be a legacy,” McMahon said. “We want people to see this place for many years in the condition it’s in. We want to make this village proud of what we’ve done.”

Town Chairman Don Sitte cut the ribbon, asking for and receiving “a big resounding applause” from the small group of friends and supporters who arrived at the start of the four-hour open house.

The company is a family affair. McMahon’s wife, Angie, is in charge of the retail aspects of the business; son Danny is the brewmaster and son Ben is in charge of the tasting room as well as assistant brewer.

The plan is to be open 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. seven days a ...More info on site

Brewery news Kenya: Kenya ranked low in alcohol consumption despite being largest beer market in the region
Kenya is ranked at the bottom compared to neighbouring Tanzania, Rwanda, Malawi, Burundi and Uganda in alcohol consumption despite being the largest beer market in the region, Standard Digital reported on May 18.

Kenya is also one of the lowest informal beer markets in Africa, at 20 per cent, compared to 89 per cent in Uganda, 87 per cent in Tanzania and 17 per cent in South Africa.

According to figures released by the World Health Organisation (WHO) in a report titled Global Status Report on Alcohol and Health 2014, only 23.1 per cent of Kenya’s population drinks alcohol. This is compared to Rwanda where 44.7 per cent of the adult population take alcohol, 41.8 per cent in Tanzania, 41.1 per cent in Burundi and 41 per cent in Uganda.

While Kenya has a lower alcohol-consuming population in the region, it has the largest number of beer consumers at 56 per cent of all alcoholic beverages consumed.

Analysis by Standard Investment Bank estimates that in Burundi, only 25 per cent of those taking alcoholic beverages drink beer.

This is compared to 50 per cent in Ethiopia, 11 per cent in Rwanda, 9 per cent in Uganda and 11 per cent in Tanzania. Kenya’s alcohol consumption ...More info on site

Brewery news UK: Mexican Corona beer may be in shortage over the next several months
Molson Coors, exclusive UK distributor of the AB InBev-owned Corona brand, has warned retailers that orders it placed for the Mexican beer in the first quarter of this year would not be delivered to schedule, The Grocer reported on May 18.

“This is expected to lead to a shortage of stock in the UK,” Molson Coors said this week, adding that “to minimise the impact on our customers and consumers, we have taken the decision to proactively manage Corona stock until further notice.”

Some experts think the lack of stock on Corona, a £60 mln-sales brand in the UK that’s imported from Mexico, has been caused by increased demand ahead of the World Cup.

But other industry insiders claim AB InBev’s brewery in Mexico has been suffering a shortage of bottles and it was not known when this would be resolved. AB InBev said it would work closely with Molson Coors to manage stock and minimise disruption. “We are working hard towards a solution,” it added.

Neither brewer would say what direct impact the shortage was likely to have on retailers, although a senior buyer at one of the big four said he did not expect to run out altogether.

Brewery news UK: Britain is fast developing a taste for Polish lager
Britain is fast developing a taste for Polish lager thanks to the influx of workers from Eastern Europe, new industry figures reveal.

The extra strong Tyskie brand is now so popular in the UK it has made the top ten ‘World Beers’ table alongside better known brands like Heineken and Kronenbourg.

The list records the best selling foreign beers and lagers sold in shops, supermarkets and off licences across the UK, outside the mass market brewers like Carling and Stella.

But while the other brands have built up a strong following in Britain over decades, Tyskie is a relative newcomer thanks to the wave of Polish immigrants in recent years.

In Poland, it accounts for one in five of all beer sales and at 5.6 per cent is stronger than most other lagers sold over here which are often too weak for Eastern European tastes. Now it is owned by multinational brewing giant SAB Miller which also has Peroni, Grolsch and several other foreign beers.

Miller Brands sales director Tim Clay said: 'Retailers should aim to have a selection of world beers available alongside their mainstream and everyday premium lager to encourage consumers to trade up.'

Sales of so-called World Beers are soaring in the UK ...More info on site

Brewery news India: United Breweries delays announcement of fourth-quarter results pending court ruling on its sale of United Spirits
United Breweries (Holdings) Ltd (UBHL) said it would delay the announcement of its fourth-quarter results, pending a Supreme Court ruling on its sale of United Spirits Ltd. (USL) shares worth at least Rs1,400 crore to Diageo Plc, Livemint reported on May 19.

UBHL, the holding company of Vijay Mallya’s troubled UB Group, said in a statement to BSE that it would publish its fourth-quarter results within a month after the Supreme Court passes judgement on the Diageo stake sale case.

UBHL filed an appeal with the Supreme Court in January against a Karnataka high court order that annulled the sale of USL shares.

The high court, which passed its verdict on 20 December, reversed an order passed by the same court in May when it gave conditional approval to UBHL to sell its shares to Diageo.

The December order came in response to a winding-up petition filed by creditors of UBHL, which, according to the company’s latest annual report, has extended corporate guarantees worth thousands of crores to lenders of troubled group affiliate Kingfisher Airlines Ltd. Proceedings related to the winding-up petition will continue in the high court.

Diageo completed its takeover of USL last July, nearly eight months after the companies announced the deal. ...More info on site
