USA, MI: Longship Brewing Company preparing to open in downtown Lawton later this fall
|
It’s been nearly five years since Joe Magers first tried his hand at brewing beers.
Now with close to 60 beers and four ciders of his own, he’s preparing to open his own brewery, mlive.com reported on September 24.
Magers hopes to be pouring the first beers at Longship Brewing Company later this fall at 114 N. Main St. in downtown Lawton, which is about 20 miles southwest of Kalamazoo.
Magers has more than 20 beers and four hard ciders he’s comfortable showing off at the new brewery.
The hard ciders are all named after Norse goddesses. His flagship cider is called Iduna, named after the keeper of the lifegiving apples that kept the gods young, Magers said.
With a youthful, crisp flavor, he hopes the cider will have the same effect on his patrons.
Magers isn’t the first person to open a brewery at 114 N. Main St. The first brewery to occupy the space was Duster’s, which opened in 1993. Old Hat was then opened by craft beer industry legend Larry Bell in 1998. The space changed hands twice before closing in 2012. Barn Brewers most recently occupied the space from 2015 to 2022.

USA, PA: Iron Hill Brewery & Restaurant ready to open brewpub No. 22
|
Back in the pre-pandemic days, it felt like Iron Hill Brewery & Restaurant was opening a brewery and/or restaurant every other day as part of its “20 by 20” initiative. Things have slowed, real estate-wise since nailing that objective, but the Iron Hill team is once again aiming to “open two full-service brewery and restaurant concepts each year for the next few years.” First up is a new restaurant in Pennsylvania’s Lehigh Valley in Spring 2024, the Craft Brewing Business reported on September 26.
A much-anticipated construction milestone is the delivery of brewery equipment, including the tank delivery and installations in the first quarter.
The planned spot in the Lehigh Valley Mall, the largest shopping mall in the Lehigh Valley, will be the 22nd brewery and restaurant overall for Iron Hill, originally founded in Delaware in 1996. The other 21 locations span across Delaware, Pennsylvania, South Carolina and Georgia.
“The Lifestyle Center at the Lehigh Valley Mall in Whitehall is a large, dynamic shopping center, with the location being a naturally strategic step for us to strengthen our brand presence in suburban markets,” said Chris Westcott, CEO of Iron Hill Brewery and Restaurants. “We are thrilled to introduce the Lehigh Valley community

USA, WI: 1840 Brewing Co. bringing its craft beers to Milwaukee’s West Bend
|
Kyle Vetter, owner of 1840 Brewing Co., said when crafting beer, he goes for these five flavors: "Something light, dark, hoppy, sour and fruity."
And now, 1840 Brewing Co. will be bringing those flavorful homemade craft beers to West Bend, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported on September 26.
The brewing company, which opened in Bay View in 2017, is hoping for a November opening at a location near downtown West Bend in a new mixed-used development, said Vetter.
This business already has its foot in West Bend by being the Bock beer provider for Bockfest, a new festival in West Bend planned for March 2, 2024.
Vetter said when city officials approached him about opening a location in West Bend, he embraced the idea with open arms. "We are super excited to highlight what we do. We want to be a part of West Bend," he said.
Vetter said for now, the plan is to brew and craft all beer in Bay View and transport the products to West Bend. He said, however, he is hoping to be able to craft beer in West Bend, possibly by 2024.
Vetter said that 1840 Brewing Co. will have a coffee shop, a tap room and a restaurant area.

USA: Molson Coors loses bid for retrial in Stone Brewing trademark case
|
Beer giant Molson Coors on September 25 failed to convince a federal judge in San Diego to overturn a jury's decision that the company owes $56 million for violating craft brewery Stone Brewing's trademark rights, Reuters reported.
U.S. District Judge Roger Benitez said that Molson Coors was not entitled to a new trial or a court ruling in its favor, rejecting its arguments that the evidence did not support the verdict.
Benitez also denied Stone Brewing's motion for a new bench trial on its allegations that Molson Coors used the "Stone" name in bad faith, which could have justified additional damages.
Molson Coors spokesperson Rachel Dickens said the company disagreed with the decision and is evaluating its options, including a potential appeal. Representatives for Stone Brewing did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the decision.
Escondido, California-based Stone Brewing sued what was then MillerCoors in 2018, arguing its marketing of Keystone beers that focused on the words "Stone" and "Stones" without "Key" caused consumer confusion and infringed its trademarks.
Stone Brewing told the court that Molson Coors had rebranded Keystone to capitalize on the brewery's consumer goodwill. A jury returned a $56 million verdict for Stone Brewing last March.

USA, DE: Blue Earl Brewing Co.’s business coming to a close at the end of the week
|
For the second time in two months, a major Delaware craft brewery has made headlines for closing its doors, the Delaware Online reported on September 25.
This time it's Ronnie Price, the owner of Blue Earl Brewing Co., breaking the surprising news that his nearly 8½-year run in Smyrna would be coming to a close at the end of this week.
"It's with a heavy heart and overwhelming sadness that we announce the closure of Blue Earl Brewing Company," the brewery posted on its Facebook page on September 25. "This is the last week of service at Blue Earl. Stop in and say goodbye.
"We love you Delaware, Blue Earl family, friends and fans everywhere."
The 11,535-square-foot brewery's final day in operation will be Saturday, September 30.
Said Smyrna Mayor Robert Johnson of the closure: "It's unfortunate that we're losing a great business. They have provided a wonderful service to this town."
In an interview on September 26, Price pointed to both after-effects of the COVID-19 pandemic and a more competitive alcohol market for his decision to pull the plug.
Prices for materials needed to both make and package beer have risen and his Smyrna Business Park taproom sales never recovered from the pandemic due to changing

USA, OH: North High Brewing to cease operations
|
Columbus-based North High Brewing planted a flag in Ohio City (2814 Detroit Ave.) two summer ago. On September 25, management announced that it would cease operations, the Cleveland Scene reported.

The brief announcement follows:
"A bitter-sweet farewell to our Ohio City location. Today we made the difficult decision to permanently close NHB OC. We want to thank the entire Ohio City and Cleveland community for their continued support over the past 2 years. Thanks for the memories, Cleveland."
The attached COhatch co-working space remains open.

Russia: Guinness soon to be sold in Russia again, state agency claims
|
Guinness could soon be sold in Russia once again, according to reports stating a Kremlin agency has approved its importation, The Drinks Business reported on September 25.
The reports via Russian state agency Rosaccrediation reveal that the Moscow Brewing Company (MPC) has officially approved the distribution of Guinness in an agreement that will assist with the importation of the stout brand to the sanctions-hit country.
Despite the claims being made, Guinness owner Diageo told The Drinks Business (db) that an about-turn has not been made from the company’s end and Diageo has reiterated its stance on imports to Russia.
A spokesperson for Diageo exclusively told db: “In March 2022, we stopped all imports of our products to Russia and stopped third-party, local production of beer and bottling of spirits. In June 2022, we then took the decision to responsibly wind down our business there and that process is now almost complete. Diageo is not either directly or indirectly importing or selling any products in Russia.”
The situation of Guinness being made available in Russia, despite Diageo’s moves to stop it, has been speculated to have arisen from Russia’s access to parallel imports where a Russian company has a registered declaration issued by the respective
