Seasonal harvest pressure and expectations for large corn deliveries from the United States should limit any upside potential in feed barley bids in Western Canada for the foreseeable future despite this year’s smaller crop, the Canadian Cattlemen reported on September 21.
“We’re getting some better-than-expected yields (in central Alberta), so there is some harvest pressure with guys needing to move grain for bin space,” said grain trader Jay Janzen of CorNine Commodities in Lacombe, Alta.
“It seems like (the market) will grind sideways for a while, and then once the corn hits the market in November… I imagine it will limit the upside on things,” Janzen added.
He noted while farmers are not excited about selling at current prices, they likely won’t have much choice going forward.
Janzen estimated about three million tonnes of corn would be coming up from the U.S. during the marketing year, making up about a third of Canada’s feed demand and offsetting any losses in Canadian production.
Canada grew 7.8 million tonnes of barley in 2023, according to the latest Statistics Canada estimate. That was down by 100,000 tonnes from the August forecast and well below the nearly 10 million tonnes grown the previous year.

USA, MO: Lotawana Brewing opens to public in Grain Valley

There’s another new brewery in the Kansas City area. On Saturday, Sept. 9, Lotawana Brewing Co. opened to the public at 9430 S. Shrout Road in Grain Valley, Flatland KC reported.
The brewery opened with a lineup of five flagship beers, including an American pale ale, golden ale, red ale, stout and shandy.
The brewery is also accommodating to non-beer drinkers. The brewery carries hard seltzers, canned cocktails from Tom’s Town, wine and a few non-alcoholic options. While the brewery doesn’t have a full food menu, they do offer a homemade Bavarian pretzel with beer cheese to snack on.
One of the interesting aspects of the new brewery is a service that few, if any, craft breweries offer. Lotawana Brewing Co. will be offering an in-home keg service. The service is meant specifically for homebrewers who want their kegging systems dialed in for them by the pros. This means no more foamy beer while you try to get the correct temperatures and/or levels of CO2.
At the moment, the brewery is open Friday from 4-10 p.m., Saturday from 12-10 p.m., and Sunday from 12-6 p.m. Eventually, the plan is to expand those hours to include Wednesday and Thursday from 4-10 p.m.

Canada, AB: Odd Company Brewing opens its second location in Edmonton’s Ritchie neighbourhood

Odd Company Brewing has announced the opening its second location in Edmonton’s Ritchie neighbourhood, the Canadian Beer News reported on September 18.
The taproom and patio at the production brewery officially opened last Friday September 15th, and offers a full line-up of Odd Company beers on tap, and a food menu that includes many beer-friendly options including pizzas, wings, burgers, fries, and more.
Odd Company Ritchie is located at 9959 76 Ave NW in Edmonton, and is currently open Wednesday to Sunday from 12:00 noon to 11:00 PM.

USA, WA: Old Stove Brewing launching new facility in former Lagunitas Brewing Company space in Seattle
|
The Seattle craft brewery Old Stove Brewing is opening its doors this weekend in the former Lagunitas Brewing Company space at 1550 NW 49th St., My Ballard reported on September 20.
Lagunitas closed its Ballard taproom in January after six years in that location. It was also home to Hilliard’s Beer before Odin Brewing acquired Hilliard’s in 2016.
Now, the 16,500-square-foot building has been transformed into Old Stove Brewing. Along with a full-service taproom and outdoor beer garden, Old Stove will serve barbecue-themed food and serve as a 12,000-square-foot production facility.
Co-founders Chris Moore and Brian Stan opened their first Old Stove brewery at Pike Place Market in 2016. They also have a spot in Queen Anne at 600 W. Nickerson St.
“We originally were attracted to the space so we could quickly build out a production facility to meet our growth needs,” Chris Moore, co-founder of Old Stove Brewing said in a statement about the opening. “Then we started imagining what could be done with the large outdoor space and the Old Stove Gardens concept was born.

USA, OH: North High Brewing to officially launch its Westerville location on September 22
|
North High Brewing celebrates the grand opening of its largest location yet today, Friday, September 22.
The brewery has once again partnered with coworking space COhatch to open the location at 240 S. State St. in Westerville, replicating a model they first debuted in Dublin. (North High took over the former home of Brazenhead, while COhatch built a new location behind…one that will be expanding.)
“That one really set the tone for what our expansion plans would be – suburban, high-traffic areas with patios,” North High Owner Gavin Meyers says.
He calls the new Westerville spot the dream location. There’s a large parking lot and lots of street parking. It’s in a dense residential area with Otterbein University nearby and Uptown Westerville a half a mile up State Street.
It also has a massive patio, something Meyers found was lacking at their original Short North location in a pandemic/post-pandemic world. Front patio seating faces State Street, while the back patio abuts to Westerville South High School. The back patio has a full bar, along with a playground-like atmosphere fit for all ages. The Westerville Bikeway also runs behind the property and North High is prepared with parking for about 30 bikes.

USA, LA: St. Charles Parish’s newest and only brewery to open sometime in early 2024
|
Chemist and brewer Brandon Zeringue and his spouse June Zeringue announced this week plans to open St. Charles Parish’s newest and only brewery sometime in early 2024 at 13899 River Road in Luling, the St. Charles Herald Guide reported on September 21.
The new craft brewery, which will be called the German Coast Beer Company, anticipates opening in the first quarter of 2024 inside its soon to be renovated building, situated beside Crawfish and Chill, a new seafood restaurant slated to open around the same time.
“People in the parish need a place like this; the closest brewery is 25 miles away in the city of New Orleans,” Zeringue said. “This will be a family friendly place – you’ll be able to bring kids, we’ll do live music and games.”
The couple say they have brewed dozens upon dozens of batches of beer before arriving at the final selection of beers they plan to regularly offer new customers.
“I’ve brewed 200 plus batches of beer; it’s hard to pick out which ones are your favorite,” Zeringue commented. “But there are a handful that we definitely know are going to be [offered as] what we could call flagship beers.”

USA, SC: Bierkeller Brewing Company holds its official grand opening in Columbia

There is a new authentic German Brewery and ‘Biergarten’ on the Columbia river front ABC Columbia reported on September 21.
This week, Bierkeller Brewing Company held its official grand opening with Columbia City leaders. The owners say the brewery will provide an authentic experience of a true German beer hall and Biergarten. Bierkeller will also serve authentic German food such as fresh made pretzels, sausage, bratwurst, and schnitzels.

USA, VA: Honor Brewing announces grand opening of its new Sterling location in October
|
Honor Brewing is thrilled to announce the grand opening of their Sterling, Virginia (Loudoun County) location, slated for October of this year, Brewbound reported on September 18.
Honor Brewing currently has two other locations – the Chantilly tasting room and the Honor Brewing Kitchen in Fairfax.
When founder Allen Cage began Honor Brewing in 2014, he knew he wanted it to be more than just a brewery as he is more than just a brewery owner himself. Cage, a small town boy from West Virginia, says that, from a young age, he knew he wanted to be two things when he grew up: a pilot and an entrepreneur. He went on to serve in the military with 24 years of active duty – 12 of which were as a Cobra pilot and the other 12 are still classified. North America: Diageo appoints North America CEO to jump-start growth in the US
|
Diageo PLC has unexpectedly replaced its head of North America as the company’s chief executive tries to jump-start growth in the U.S., the Johnnie Walker maker’s largest market, MSN reported on September 21.
The world’s largest global liquor maker has appointed the former head of Clif Bar, Sally Grimes, to the newly created role of North America CEO. Clif was bought by Mondelez last year in a deal worth at least $2.9 billion, and Grimes stepped down from the snack maker in February.
Heading the North America business is one of the highest-profile and most demanding roles at Diageo. New CEO Debra Crew and her predecessor, the late Ivan Menezes, both previously served as presidents of North America.
Grimes will join the executive board and rank above Diageo’s existing North America president, Claudia Schubert, who will stay on as president and chief operating officer but step down from the executive board next month. Schubert—who previously served as Diageo’s U.S. and Canada spirits head—was named to the executive board and her current position heading North America only last year.

Two Texas beer brands that are stocked on shelves and available on taprooms all around San Antonio have announced they are officially merging, MySanAntonio.com reported on September 20.
Alamo Beer Company and VIVA Beer announced the consolidation on Wednesday, September 20, aiming to "bring together the best of both worlds, creating a powerful synergy that will strengthen their shared commitment to crafting exceptional, approachable beer for the San Antonio community and beyond."
VIVA Beer co-owners Micheal (MJ) Johnson and Bobby Jones have tackled the local craft beer scene in their own innovative style, utilizing a self-distribution model to grow from homebrew to contract brewing partnerships since 2019. The brand can be found in stores including H-E-B, Quiktrip, and other convenience stores around San Antonio.
Johnson and Jones had a "fortuitous meeting" with Alamo Beer Co. last year that was parlayed into "a dynamic partnership built on shared values and a deep passion for San Antonio," according to a news release.

USA, IA: Peace Tree Brewing Co. owner planning to sell her business
|
The owner of Peace Tree Brewing Co. announced Sept. 14 that she plans to sell her business, the Business Record reported on September 18.
Megan McKay, who founded one of Iowa’s first craft breweries and the first 100% woman-owned Iowa brewery nearly 15 years ago, said she is seeking a new owner or ownership group to propel the company forward.
Peace Tree was established in 2009 as a small taproom in downtown Knoxville. The brewery emerged from McKay’s desire to create a place for community, connections and conversations. In 2017, Peace Tree opened a Des Moines taproom in the Historic East Village.
“I’ve had the time of my life building a business that has exceeded my expectations,” said McKay in a prepared statement. “We’ve created an economic spark in Knoxville, driven tourism, generated employment opportunities, enhanced community bonds, crafted exceptional beverages and had a blast doing it all.”
McKay is a Knoxville native and a University of Iowa graduate.
In addition to its two taprooms, Peace Tree has evolved into a full-scale production facility with distribution networks across Iowa and Nebraska. The brewery’s lineup includes gold medal winners Blonde Fatale and Get a Little Hazy as well as its popular nonalcoholic root beer.

USA, TX: Circle Brewing Company to close both its locations after 15 years in business
|
A North Austin brewery is closing both of its locations after 15 years, CBS Austin reported on September 19.
Circle Brewing Company announced the permanent closure on September 18 on Facebook of its brewery located on West Braker Lane and its new Elgin location next week.
"It is with a heavy heart and the utmost sadness that we must announce the closing of Circle Brewing Company. It is hard for us to believe that we have been at this for almost 15 years, although some of those years certainly went by faster than others," the owners said in the lengthy statement.
Circle Brewing Company said it opened its doors in 2008 with only two draft beers: Blur Texas Hefe and Envy Amber and barely a dozen draft accounts. Ben and Jud, co-owners of the brewery, add it was a different time to run and operate a brewery because of the "real spirit of camaraderie."

Huckleberry Brewing, located at 600 Frazier Drive in Franklin, has now closed, the Williamson Source reported on September 19.
The restaurant/brewery opened in 2022 in the former Cool Springs Brewery spot. The business has no information regarding the closure on social media or the door of the business; however, Google shows the business is now permanently closed.

Jamaica: Heineken introducing Heineken Silver in Jamaica

Beer maker Heineken is introducing the latest addition to its line-up of products in Jamaica, Heineken Silver, the Jamaica Observer reported on September 21.
Dubbed a captivating twist on the classic beer, Heineken Silver will be available throughout Jamaica starting this month, the company said in a press release.
According to the release, Heineken Silver is a unique beer that stands out because of its unique brewing process. Unlike most beers, it is brewed at an ice-cold temperature of -1℃, which gives it a smooth and balanced taste, the company said, adding that the lagering process also helps retain Heineken's signature fruity aroma that is less bitter.
Heineken Brand Manager Amoye Phillpotts-Brown commented on the brand’s newest innovation.
"Heineken is intentional in creating meaningful connections. In the spirit of this, we wanted to create a more accessible taste profile where quality meets innovation. We wanted a beer that would be more inclusive and interesting to young adult consumers, and Heineken Silver is the outcome. Romania: Ursus Breweries invests in thermal energy system
|
Romania's Ursus Breweries said on September 22 that it has invested 2 million euro ($2.1 million) in an installation which recovers thermal energy from flue gas at one of its breweries, SeeNews reported.
The installation will reduce the Buzau brewery's natural gas consumption by some 18%, thus lowering the associated carbon dioxide emissions, Ursus Breweries said in a press release.
"Following the investments made so far, Ursus Breweries' carbon emissions have decreased by 50% in 2022 compared to the reference year 2019. We're just getting started: the investment in Buzau was successfully completed in the summer of this year and represents a step forward in reducing carbon dioxide emissions in our factories to zero," said Robert Uzuna, Vice President of Corporate Affairs of Ursus Breweries.
Last month, Ursus Breweries signed a multi-year virtual power purchase agreement (VPPA) with Austrian green electricity provider Enery.
Bucharest-headquartered Ursus Breweries has been controlled by Asahi Breweries Europe since 20217. The company owns breweries in Timisoara, Buzau, Brasov and a mini-production facility in Cluj-Napoca, according to its website.
