|
Anheuser-Busch announced on August 29 a $22.5 million investment in its Houston brewery, which includes upgrades to the facility’s internal systems to enhance workplace safety and improve brewery efficiency. Anheuser-Busch has a long history of commitment to being a strong partner to the communities it calls home, and these upcoming local investments reflect the brewer’s dedication to delivering the highest-quality beer and other beverages to consumers while driving economic prosperity around the country.
“Investing in our people and in our communities to drive economic prosperity is part of who we are,” said Brendan Whitworth, CEO of Anheuser-Busch. “We’re excited that this $22 million investment will improve the work environment for our frontline employees while also serving as engine of economic growth for Houston and surrounding areas. USA, NC: Mint Hill’s only brewery preparing for September opening
|
Mint Hill’s only brewery plans to open next month in downtown with a Caribbean vibe, the Charlotte Observer reported on August 29.
Panzu’ Brewery at 7251 Matthews-Mint Hill Road will serve craft beers and tapas with an atmosphere “like a vacation to the Dominican,” according to the brewery’s Facebook page.
Panzu’ expects to open Sept. 15, co-owner Rosa Marte de Pacheco told The Charlotte Observer.
“Imagine yourself in a white wedding on a beach with light Latin and Caribbean music. We want people to feel relaxed,” de Pacheco said.
De Pacheco and Johan Marte, natives of the Dominican Republic, named the brewery in honor of their late father, who they and the grandchildren called Papá Panzú. The siblings had been shareholders in theirs father’s fruit pulp production company.
“He loved beer. He had a big beer belly, and that’s what panzu’ means — big belly,” de Pacheco said.
The two have been homebrewing for several years with small batches of 50 to 60 bottles of IPA, American blondes and American ales, according to the Panzu’s Instagram.
Mint Hill’s first brewery, Barking Duck Brewing Co., closed in 2018 after two years at 4400 Morris Park Drive.

USA, CO: LowDown Brewery + Kitchen to close for good on September 30
|
When Scott O’Hearn and Philip Phifer opened LowDown Brewery + Kitchen in 2014, it was on their own terms: a brewery with food — unusual at the time — on an underused corner in Denver’s urban core, and serving straightforward beers rather than trendy styles, The Denver Post reported on August 25.
On Sept. 30, O’Hearn will close the brewery for good, but once again it is on his own terms, for the most part, which is a rare achievement for craft breweries in Colorado.
“It was a really good run. We had a great staff culture and customer culture … and we were extremely profitable, even through COVID,” he said.
But about a year ago, LowDown’s landlord began asking whether the brewery wanted to renew its lease at 800 Lincoln St. because he’d received an offer from a developer who wanted to buy the building. At first, O’Hearn and Phifer (who moved to Oregon a few years ago and backed away from day-to-day operations) rejected the notion of closing. But then O’Hearn said he began to think about it more.

Australia & China: Australia ships first cargo of barley to China since tariff lift
|
Australia has shipped the first barley cargo to China since tariffs imposed in 2020 were lifted earlier this month, the country's minister for agriculture said on August 29, Reuters reported.
China ended anti-dumping tariffs on Australian barley earlier this month, roughly three years after the 80.5% duties first dented exports once worth up to A$1.5 billion ($967 million) annually and led Canberra to file a case at the World Trade Organization (WTO).
"It's terrific to have heard that overnight the first shipment has been dispatched from Kwinana and its gradually working its way towards China," Minister for Agriculture Murray Watt said at a news conference on August 29.
The chief of grain exporter CBH Group said the shipment was roughly 55,000 tons of Maximus barley, a malt variety.

Ukraine: Winter barley planted area may decrease significantly this year
|
Ukrainian farmers plan to increase the sown area of winter rape for 2024 to a record 1.9 million hectares but may cut the sown area of winter wheat, an agriculture ministry survey showed on August 28.
The survey said that 45% of farmers did not plan to reduce the winter sowing area while 38% would increase it and 14% would not sow winter crops, the ministry said in a statement.
"The overwhelming majority of farmers do not plan to significantly change their winter crops acreage compared to last season," the ministry said.
Earlier this month, Ukraine, facing difficulties in exporting its grain, asked farmers to report their sowing plans for 2024 to form preliminary estimates for the 2024/25 season.
It said 2,403 farmers and agricultural producers participated in the survey.
The ministry said the composition of winter crops might change and producers could reduce the share of wheat and barley, but increase the area under winter rape.
According to the survey, winter barley area may decrease most significantly - by 5.4%.
It said the overall winter crop area could rise by 0.5 million hectares, or 8%, compared to the previous season.

Finland & Norway: Nordic drinks firm Anora to distribute AB InBev beer brands in Finland and Norway
|
Nordic drinks firm Anora has announced the signing of a partnership with AB InBev, under which it will distribute beer brands including Corona, Stella Artois and Budweiser in the on-trade channel in Finland and Norway, the European Supermarket Magazine reported on August 28.
The agreement comes into effect at the start of September, and will enable Finland-headquartered Anora to strengthen its offering to on-trade customers, a key element in its growth strategy, the drinks firm said.
“We are honoured and excited about this partnership with AB InBev," commented Pekka Tennilä, Anora chief executive.
"We have been focusing strongly on building our on-trade excellence at Anora and this partnership is another important step on that path. In line with our purpose of bringing the world of drinks to Nordic consumers, with the addition of these iconic beer brands in our partner brand portfolio we can offer even better service to our on-trade customers in Finland and Norway."
Elsewhere. Jerry Maguire, director, Growth Markets Europe at AB InBev, praised the "outstanding reputation" developed by Anora in recent years, adding that the brewer is "delighted to go hand-in-hand with Anora to grow our strong global brands".

Japan: Asahi Super Dry to get new low-alcohol spinoff
|
Asahi Super Dry is Japan’s favorite brand of beer, so it was a big deal when Asahi Breweries changed its recipe for the first time ever last year. Now they’ve created a new member of the Super Dry extended family, Asahi Super Dry Dry Crystal, SoraNews24 reported on August 27.
Yes, “Dry” is in the official name twice, but Asahi Super Dry Dry Crystal isn’t an extra-dry version of Super Dry, nor is it a Sailor Moon Crystal-themed brew. Instead, Asahi Super Dry Dry Crystal is a low-alcohol version of Super Dry. While the standard Super Dry is 5 percent alcohol by volume, Dry Crystal is 3.5 percent, as indicated on its can.
Despite the lower alcohol content, Asahi Super Dry Dry Crystal won’t have a watery or bland taste, Asahi Breweries assures the consumers. The company is promising a satisfyingly full flavor, achieved in part through the use of Polaris hops and a higher-than-average fermentation rate for Dry Crystal.
