Serbia: Heineken invests in new production line at Novi Sad brewery
|
Heineken Serbia, a unit of the Dutch brewing group Heineken, said it has invested 16 million euros in a new production line for bottling and canning beer and the development of the production line for packing bottled beer at its factory in Novi Sad, which will increase the factory’s output by 50%, the Serbian Monitor reported on April 27.
At the same time, carbon dioxide emissions have been reduced by more than 1,000 tonnes annually, 20 percent more compared to the previous year, with almost 100 percent utilization of total production capacities achieved.
“Heineken has so far invested more than 220 million euros in Serbia, and in the last two years alone, capital investments made in the brewery in Novi Sad amounted to 16 million euros,” Heineken Serbia director general Nada Djokic said in a press release on April 26.
The Dutch brewing group operates two factories in Serbia — in Zajecar and Novi Sad.

Ireland: Diageo’s brewery plans stalled by a lone objector
|
Brewing giant Diageo’s plans for a €200 million brewery on a greenfield site outside Newbridge are being stalled by a Kildare man who believes it should instead be built in Athy, The Irish Times reported on April 27.
John Lynch, from Athy, is the sole objector to the proposal. He has lodged an appeal with An Bord Pleanála against Kildare County Council’s decision last month to grant planning permission for the project.
The new 24/7 facility will brew lagers and ales including Rockshore, Harp, Hop House 13, Smithwick’s, Kilkenny and Carlsberg. The new brewery will deliver 70 jobs when operational and is designed to support the future growth of Diageo Ireland’s beer brands.
It will have a capacity of two million hectolitres and will be the second largest brewing operation in Ireland after Diageo’s operation at St. James’s Gate.
Mr Lynch of Cloney, Athy said the proposal for a site at Littleconnell should be rejected and the brewery built instead in Athy on environmental grounds.
Mr Lynch said that if there was ever a competition for a future brewery site of this scale in this country, Athy “would win out by miles from a financial point of view”.

Jamaica: Heineken’s Red Stripe to get a new managing director
|
Red Stripe, part of the Heineken Company, is making a change at the top, the Jamaica Observer reported on April 27.
The beer maker announced in a press release that Luis Prata, who joined the company as managing director in August 2019 will end his assignment, effective June 30, 2023. Prata will be replaced by Daaf van Tilburg, who is currently managing director of Brasserie Nationale d’Haïti (BRANA), which is also part of the Heineken Company, effective July 1, 2023.
Prata will assume the role of managing director at Heineken Slovakia, with effect July 1, 2023.
Since August 2019, Prata has been leading Red Stripe through a period of transformation, “successfully delivering numerous projects that have improved the company performance,” the release stated.
According to the release, during his tenure, Prata piloted the company through the turbulent years of COVID-19, implementing several initiatives that ensured the safety and health of the team while supporting customers with the initiative “For our Bars, For Jamaica”.

Canada, BC: Swift Brewing officially launching in Victoria, BC
|
Swift Brewing is officially launching in Victoria, BC, and it certainly looks like a must-hit new spot for brew-loving folks in and around the area, the Daily Hive reported on April 27.
The fresh brewery and “good time tasting room” is located at 450 Swift Street in Victoria. It’s set to open in May.
Swift Brewing will offer a wide range of beer as well as cocktails and “basement snacks.”
This spot is brought to us by the team who created Craft Beer Market. We’re told patrons can expect the same good times and beer-fueled fun that Craft is known for at Swift too.
Swift will have a nostalgic throwback vibe. Think old-school charm with modern-day comfort.

USA, PA: Lavery Brewing Company just hours away from opening
|
Finishing touches are underway at Lavery Brewing Company, the Erie News Now reported on April 27.
With a grand reopening just hours away, owner Jason Lavery is all smiles with a few nerves.
"I'm so excited," he said. "I'm really excited for Erie to see it. We're pumped."
Since buying the former Hungry Howie's, Lavery set about expanding his downtown business.
He's torn down walls, installed a brand new, larger bar and created a full kitchen with an expanded menu.
"We have a griddle and four burners and a pretty awesome pizza oven and a little fryer," he noted.
A facelift of sorts, much like the ones other parts of downtown Erie are seeing.
Lavery says he's proud to be part of that construction, taking an active role in rebuilding his home.
"Bringing people in from out of town like we tend to do with tourists and family and friends, people see all these cranes erecting new buildings and all this construction everywhere, it's awesome to be a part of that," he said. "I feel like Erie's on the upward swing and trajectory, and we're glad to be a part of it."

Ireland: Barley production up 1.9% in 2022
|
Ireland’s creal production grew by 3.7% following a strong year for wheat, oat and barley growth, new figures from the CSO reveal.
New data also shows significant increases in winter wheat, up 9.1% year-on-year, with winter oats also seeing growth of 9.7% in the same period.
The yield of wheat rose by 0.1 tonnes per hectare, up by 0.8%, with barley falling by 0.1 tonnes per hectare, a decrease of 1.5%. Oats were up by 0.2 tonnes per hectare, representing a rise of more than 2% year-on-year.
According to the CSO, wheat production grew by 57,600 tonnes, up 8.7%, with barley growing by 28,900 tonnes (1.9%) and oats by 3,300 tonnes (1.4%).
Speaking on the findings, Donal Kelly, Senior Statistician in Agriculture Surveys said “Overall, there was an increase in the production of wheat, oats, and barley crops in 2022.” “Production of beans and peas rose from 54,400 tonnes to 65,700 tonnes in 2022, up by more than 20%.”
According to Mr Kelly, the growth was largely driven by an increase in the area sown of 1,100 hectares and an improvement in the yield from 5.6 tonnes per hectare to 6.1 tonnes per hectare.”
