Brewery news Australia & India: Australia’s craft brewer Coopers secures new distributor in India
Coopers craft beers are available across India after the Australian brewery secured a new distributor. This follows an introduction by Austrade to VBev, one of India’s largest importers and distributors of wine, spirits and beer, the Mirage News reported on December 8.

‘Coopers is the only Australian craft beer in the Indian market,’ says John Southwell, Trade and Investment Commissioner, Austrade India. ‘VBev’s nationwide network means Coopers’ craft beers will become more widely available to Indian consumers.

‘There are not many imported craft beers as many international beer brands have set up their own breweries in India. We expect Coopers beers to do well in India, especially in states where there is less tax on beer.’

Founded in 1862, Coopers Brewery is the largest Australian-owned brewery. It makes ales, stouts and lagers and has been brewing its signature Pale Ale for 6 generations. Coopers uses only natural ingredients including malt, hops, sugar, water and a special yeast strain that’s over 90 years old.

Beer accounts for a third of the Indian alcoholic beverages market, in volume terms. Euromonitor projects the total volume of beer will increase at a 6% CAGR to reach 2.9 billion litres in 2025.

India is home to around 440 million millennials. ...More info on site

Brewery news South Korea: Hite collaborates with Australia’s Joe White Maltings on a special edition single malt beer
South Korean brewer Hite has collaborated with Australia’s Joe White Maltings on a special edition single malt beer made exclusively from Tasmanian barley, the Beer and Brewer reported on December 5.

Terra Single Malt For Christmas is an extension of Hite’s ascendant all-malt lager brand Terra, which has been brewed exclusively from Australian grown malt supplied by Joe White since the beer’s inception in 2019.

The special edition doubles down on the Australian provenance story that underpins the beer, showcasing barley supplied by Joe White’s Tasmanian barley provider, Vaucluse Agriculture Company, which was malted at Joe White’s Devonport facility.

It is packaged in cans featuring a QR code that consumers can scan and trace the origins of the malt, from barley farm to harvest to malting – including dates, times and processes – made possible by Joe White and Vaucluse’s fully traceable supply chain.

Joe White Asia Pacific Key Account Manager Daniel Baillon said the project continues the maltster’s longstanding relationship with Hite.

“Hite was eager to offer its customers an end-to-end view of the product through a ‘grain to glass’ concept and we were able to work with valuable partners such as Vaucluse to deliver a product that was fully traceable,” he said.

“The market ...More info on site

Barley news France: Nearly all wheat and barley fields in good condition in France
Nearly all French wheat and barley fields are in good condition as crops head into their winter dormancy phase, data from farm office FranceAgriMer showed on December 9.

Regular rainfall and warm temperatures during autumn helped sowing and early cereal growth in France, the European Union's biggest producer.

An intensifying cold spell this week is being monitored by the market although traders say the cooling of temperatures may help plants build up resistance if frosts remain moderate.

For soft wheat, France's main cereal variety, an estimated 97% of crops were in good or excellent condition in the week to Dec. 5, FranceAgriMer said.

That was down slightly from 98% the previous week and also just below a 98% rating in the same week last year, it said.

Nearly all soft wheat and barley crops had emerged and were running about a week ahead of the average growth pace of the past five years, FranceAgriMer said.

The favourable growing conditions suggest strong yield potential for next year's harvest. But French crops tend to be more affected by weather from spring onwards, like this year when drought and heat stressed crops.

FranceAgriMer will resume its weekly cereal reports in February after a winter break for the dormancy period.

Whisky news USA, KY: Pernod Ricard to construct a new distillery in central Kentucky
A new long-term project is expected to boost the local Kentucky whiskey economy. Pernod Ricard plans to construct a new distillery for bourbon brand Jefferson’s in central Kentucky — just a 30-minute drive from nearby Bardstown, Ky., a popular site for whiskey distilling, the Vine Pair reported on December 9.

Spirits corporation Pernod Ricard holds brands such as Jameson Irish Whiskey, Absolut Vodka, and Glenlivet. It’s investing an initial $196 million (with a potential to grow to $250 million in the next decade) to construct a 75,000-square-foot facility to house Jefferson’s production, according to a Dec. 8 press release from the State of Kentucky.

“The commonwealth’s bourbon industry continues to gain momentum and grow to new heights,” Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear states in the press release. “This investment by Pernod Ricard is a welcome addition to the Lebanon and Marion County community and will reinforce our bourbon industry and set us apart in our continued sustainability efforts. I want to thank the leaders of Pernod Ricard for their vision to grow in Kentucky, and I look forward to seeing their success in the coming years.”

Plans for the 265-acre space in Lebanon, Ky., include a distillery, drying operation, three warehouses, and a visitor ...More info on site
