Brewery news India: Beer about to become more expensive this summer
Like most consumer products, beer is about to become more expensive this summer as brewers in India try to cope with a steep increase in the prices of barley, glass and other packaging material, the Money Control reported on May 30.

According to industry estimates, the price of barley has almost doubled in three months, and the cost of labels, cartons and bottle crowns risen by more than 25 percent. Glass makers, too, have raised prices by 30 percent in three months.

“We have as such been compelled to either raise the landed cost of our beers or reduce discounts in order to remain viable,” said Prem Dewan, Managing Director (MD) of DeVANS Modern Breweries, which makes beer brands such as Godfather, Kotsberg Pils and Six Fields.

“…there may not be any immediate effect on retail rates; however, the supply of cheaper brands may be adversely affected,” Dewan added.

Other beer makers like United Breweries and B9 Beverages, maker of the craft beer Bira 91, are also hiking prices.

United Breweries is implementing price increases in Delhi, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh and a number of smaller states, said Rishi Pardal, MD and chief executive officer (CEO).

Pardal indicated the company is contemplating “judicious ...More info on site

Brewery news Kenya: East African Breweries commissions construction of microbrewery in Ruaraka
The East African Breweries Plc (EABL) has commissioned the construction of a Sh1billion microbrewery that will serve as an innovation center for alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages, the Capital Business reported on May 30.

The facility next to the Tusker brewery in Ruaraka will consist of a microbrewery, taste room, taproom and a flagship store.

The construction was commissioned by Group Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director Jane Karuku and is expected to be opened to the public by December, in time to celebrate the 100-year birthday of the business’s first beer Tusker.

The microbrewery will serve as a brand home for the company’s flagship beer, Tusker, bringing to life the Tusker experience and imprinting the brand in the hearts and minds of present and next generations, fueling the next 100 years of growth for the business.

In addition, it will serve as an innovation center that will provide an indispensable platform to nurture upcoming talent in brewing and liquid development in Kenya, East Africa, and the entire Diageo.

“Through this facility, EABL seeks to shape the future of the alcoholic beverage sector in the region through the development and release of craft and novelty beers. We will target our beer lovers, curious millennials and ...More info on site
