Brewery news Canada, ON: Junction Craft Brewery acquires Toronto’s Woodhouse Brewing Co.
Junction Craft Brewery (JCB) announced on May 26 their acquisition of Woodhouse Brewing Co.—an independent craft brewer based in Toronto—and the establishment of a new parent company, Junction Craft Beverage Co. (JCBC).

For 11 years, the brewery has been a staple in the west Toronto beer scene, producing a range of exceptional craft beers including their flagship beer, award-winning Conductor's Craft Ale. In October of 2021, the company initiated a formal restructuring, allowing them to streamline their finances and operations, positioning the business for a post-COVID world and fast-changing beverage market. With the creation of this parent company, they are commencing a multi-year expansion and brewery investment strategy, solidifying their evolution from brewery to beverage company. JCBC will build and further define the growing suite of services and brand portfolio established under JCB. Today the business consists of two areas:

• JCBC brand portfolio - Junction Craft Brewery, Woodhouse Brewing Co., Caribru • Craft Beer Services - Co-packing services supporting craft beverage entrepreneurs and businesses

"Over the last two years, JCB has evolved into a multi-brand/co-packing business. We are now well-positioned to accelerate our growth, keeping pace with the changing beverage market. Leveraging our facility strengths, successes and learnings, we've expanded our capabilities to include ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, HI & CO & CA: Maui Brewing Company is planning expansion in Colorado and California
The independent Hawaii-based Maui Brewing Company is planning expansion that includes additional brewing in Colorado and a bid to take over California-based Modern Times Beer. Since closing many of their locations down earlier this year, San Diego’s Modern Times has been in a court ordered receivership to pay back debts that basically requires a sale of the company with little choice in the matter. Meanwhile, Modern Times Portland’s taproom is still up for lease, the New School Beer + Cider reported on May 26.

Maui Brewing reports sales volumes for its Brand ‘Ohana including Maui Brewing Co., Maui Hard Seltzer, Kupu Spirits, and Island Soda at record levels. Despite shipment growth of 17% through April, the company is still under-producing based on customer demand with one estimate of a minimum additional 15% volume growth left on the table due to labor and supply shortages. Demand for the company flagships Bikini Blonde Lager and POG Hard Seltzer, for example, have surged 50% year-to-date while suffering from widespread out-of-stocks at wholesale and retail levels.

That significant growth in demand, coupled with supply chain and logistics challenges had earlier this spring led MBC into a partnership with Sleeping Giant Brewing Company (Denver, CO) for mainland ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, OH: Moeller Brew Barn to expand to additional taproom and brewery in Monroe
Moeller Brew Barn has announced plans to expand and add an additional taproom and brewery in Monroe, Ohio. This marks Moeller’s first Cincinnati-area location after adding Troy and Dayton in recent years to their original homebase in Maria Stein, Ohio, the Sidney Daily News reported on May 27.

“We’ll spend the next few months putting some new touches on the taproom, and we’ll fire up the brewhouse and start brewing our favorites. The new brewhouse and cellar will help us expand our distribution footprint as well,” stated Nick Moeller, founder of Moeller Brew Barn.

The 25,875-square-foot facility at 6550 Hamilton Lebanon Road allows Moeller Brew Barn, founded in 2015, to expand the brand’s taproom presence to the Cincinnati region.

“We are delighted to welcome Moeller Brew Barn to the City of Monroe. As a community, Monroe is “Firmly Founded, Proudly Growing,” and we recognize that same spirit in the Moeller team. The Moeller brand’s dedication to creative spaces and quality products feels like an excellent fit for our residents and businesses to enjoy,” said Jennifer Patterson, assistant to the city manager/economic development for the city of Monroe.

Brewery news USA, CA: Cold Coast Brewery finally open for business
After more than two years of delays related to the pandemic, Cold Coast Brewery Company is finally open for business, keyt.com reported on May 24.

The brewery held its grand opening last Friday, marking the culmination of years of hard work by four Lompoc friends, David Caro, Eric Oviatt, Jason Drew, Michael Lamping and Jason Drew.

"Best feeling that I've had," said Lamping. "That long road that we've had from inception to opening the doors, it felt really good. It's something that we worked at, a lot of blood, sweat and tears."

The name Cold Coast derives not from the often chilly weather in Lompoc, but is actually an acronym using the first letter in the last name of each of the partners.

Located inside the historic site of the former Moore’s Department Store, the brewery is in the heart of downtown Lompoc at the busy intersection of H Street and Ocean Avenue.

The friends had originally planned to open for business right before the pandemic, but when it hit, a myriad of issues followed, pushing their timeline back until now.

"Supply chain issues, staffing issues, trying to get our plans sent to the city, issues with architects, the cost of building materials going up so ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, IA: Guttenberg Brewing Co. to open to public on May 27
Sixteen months after Kathryn Klaes started hatching plans to bring a brewery to Guttenberg, her new business now is poised to open its doors, BizTimes reported on May 26.

Guttenberg Brewing Co., 530 S. First St., will open to the public at 2 p.m. on Friday, May 27, offering patrons a variety of locally made brews, along with Midwest beers and other beverages.

“I hope that it’s a good gathering place for the community,” Klaes said.

The brewery stands at the corner of South First and Schiller streets in Guttenberg, boasting an outdoor patio that will serve the business during the summer tourism season. Inside, customers are greeted by a large, open room with a mix of high-top and regular tables, with the bar set in the corner.

Klaes, who will serve as both the owner and brewer for Guttenberg Brewing Co., will have several of her own beers on tap, including an oatmeal stout, a raspberry tart, an amber beer, a white IPA and an Irish red.

Another brew, named Bob’s Beer after her husband’s grandfather, Robert Klaes, has a taste akin to a Miller Lite, Klaes said, noting that the business also will feature paintings of Guttenberg that Robert created.

The brewery already is ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, FL: 3 Daughters Brewing will open June 2 at St. Pete-Clearwater International Airport
For those traveling through the St. Pete-Clearwater International Airport, a well-known St. Petersburg brewery will be opening inside as you wait for your flight, Fox13 reported on May 26.

3 Daughters Brewing will open June 2 for passengers departing in Gates 2-6. In 2020, Mazzaro's opened a location for those traveling through Gates 7-11.

Airport officials said the bar will feature their signature craft beers and their menu items, such as the Beach Blonde Ale BBQ wings.

"Having a branded 3 Daughters Brewing bar at PIE means travelers can start their trip with one of the most popular local craft beer, cider, or seltzers. It also means they can get one last ‘taste of Florida' before they depart our region," said 3 Daughters Brewing VP of Sales and Marketing Brian Horne. "We’re very proud to bring our family-run brewery to the airport and look forward to serving PIE travelers for many years to come."

Brewery news USA, CO: Gunbarrel Brewing to close its doors for good on May 29
Gunbarrel Brewing, which built up a strong local following after it opened in 2017, said on May 26 that it will close its doors for good at the end of the day Sunday, May 29, The Denver Post reported.

Founded originally by Marie and Jamie Fox, the 20,000-square-foot brewery specialized in hazy IPAs, but it also made and served dozens of other styles, some of which it canned and distributed.

“We are very sad to inform you that due to circumstances outside of our control, Gunbarrel Brewing Company will be closing its doors,” Marie Fox wrote on Facebook. “Seeing such an extraordinary expression of creative craft beer and community come to an end is disappointing and difficult. Rather than reflect upon this sadness, we look forward to the future with hope and gratitude for this experience and all of you.”

“It has been our absolute pleasure to serve you these past five years. You have welcomed us into the community with open arms. You have enjoyed our beers and provided us with feedback that helped us improve our craft. You shared a piece of your life with us, and in turn allowed us to share our lives with you,” she added.

Brewery news South Africa: South Africans prefer beer to soft drinks
Thirsty South Africans prefer beer to soft drinks, according to the findings of NielsenIQ SA’s latest research, the City Press reported on May 22.

Nielson reports that beer is the top seller among fast-moving consumer goods, and sales of it have grown by 8% over the past 12 months.

For the five weeks to April 3, beer sales pushed soft drinks out of the top-selling position. Cigarettes are the third-largest product category, with sales growing by about 60% over the past 12 months, according to Nielsen’s data on grocery purchases in the retail sector.

For these figures, Nielsen analyses data from more than 10 000 branded shops (such as supermarkets and shops at petrol stations) and almost 143 000 independent shops (spaza shops, for example). This represents more than 80% of all grocery purchases at South African retailers.

Ged Nooy, managing director of Nielsen SA, says that the ban on sales of alcohol and tobacco products during strict Covid-19 lockdowns in 2020 and last year contributed to the strong growth in these sales from a low base.

According to statista.com, beer makes up the bulk of alcohol sales in South Africa. Sales are expected to amount to more than R116 billion this year. On the ...More info on site

Barley news Ukraine: Ukrainian farmers almost complete 2022 spring sowing
Ukrainian farmers have almost completed the 2022 spring sowing but the acreage is 22% lower than the 2021 level, the agriculture ministry said on May 27, giving no exact figure, Newsmax reported.

Ukraine plans to sow 14.2 million hectares of spring crops this year, down from 16.9 million hectares in 2021 due to the Russian invasion, the ministry said.

The official data showed that farmers had sown 189,300 hectares of spring wheat, 928,400 hectares of spring barley, 4.405 million hectares of corn and some other commodities.

Ukrainian grain traders union UGA has said the area under spring wheat could total 190,000 hectares, 900,000 hectares of spring barley and 3.9 million hectares of corn.

The agriculture ministry gave no 2022 grain crop outlook. It has said the sowing area could fall 20% this year due to fighting with Russian troops in many regions.

Brewery news UK: British Glass has “no concern” over beer bottle supply
British Glass says it has “no concern” over beer bottle supply in the UK despite warnings of a shortage of glassware due to rising energy costs from a Scottish food and drink wholesaler, letsrecycle.com reported on May 27.

Dunns Food and Drinks told media outlets that suppliers were experiencing problems sourcing glassware due to its energy intensive production, pushing prices 80% higher during the past year and sending stocks tumbling.

The wholesaler claims some brewers may be forced to switch to different containers for their products as a result.

British Glass is the trade association representing the interests of primary glass manufacturers and the glass supply-chain.

Dave Dalton, British Glass’s CEO, told letsrecycle.com: “British Glass has no concern over the beer bottle supply in the UK. This has been confirmed by our members and does not support the stories which suggest a threat of shortage.

“It is the case that there is a high demand for beer bottles across Europe, which could lead to a knock-on effect, but it doesn’t appear that there will be a shortage of bottles produced in the UK based on current demand.”

Mr Dalton added that the ongoing energy crisis had not had any “direct” impact on the current price or ...More info on site
