North America: Canada and US barley crops seen slightly smaller this year

Statistics Canada reduced its barley crop estimate slightly to 10.4 mln vs. 10.55 mln tonnes last year. Private estimates are as high as 11 mln tonnes, with an export surplus of 3.0 mln, H. M. Gauger GmbH reported earlier in October.
The harvest went smoothly, and the barley quality is good, with a large percentage of selectable malting barley. If almost 2 mln tonnes are already sold to China, the export target looks realistic. However, port capacity is large, but limited, and wheat exports from Pacific ports are more profitable than barley.
The Small Grains report of the USDA shows a US barley crop of 165 mln bushels (3.6 mln tonnes), down from 3.75 mln last year. The main production states were: Idaho 1.2 mln tonnes, Montana 1.0 mln, North Dakota 0.63 mln tonnes.

USA: Boston Beer’s Q3 net revenue increases by 30.2% versus last year
|
The Boston Beer Company, Inc. reported on October 22 third quarter 2020 net revenue of $492.8 million, an increase of $114.3 million or 30.2%, from the same period last year.
Net income for the third quarter was $80.8 million, an increase of $36.0 million or 80.6% from the same period last year.
Earnings per diluted share were $6.51, an increase of $2.86 per diluted share, or 78.4% from the third quarter of 2019. This increase was primarily due to increased revenue that was driven by shipment growth of 30.5%, partially offset by lower gross margins and increases in operating expenses.
Earnings per diluted share for the 39-week period ended September 26, 2020 were $12.90, an increase of $4.83 or 59.9% from the comparable 39-week period in 2019. Net revenue for the 39-week period ended September 26, 2020 was $1.275 billion, an increase of $327.0 million or 34.5% from the comparable 39-week period in 2019.

USA, NY: Torch & Crown Brewing Company opening in Lower Manhattan on October 23
|
After a five-month delay, the Torch & Crown Brewing Company is opening its brewery and restaurant in Lower Manhattan on Friday, October 23, Patch.com reported.
The joint at 12 Vandam Street in SoHo will sit inside a 9,000 square-foot space that allows for 430 seats at full capacity. The inside dining room has three 'Brite Tanks' which holds house-brewed beer, an 18-tap blackened steel bar, and fits seating for 250 people on its floor.
There is also an outdoor space with a heated side yard that seats another 180 people.
The Torch & Crown Brewing Company states that it has implemented a number of coronavirus safety protocols to best keep the expansive dining space free of the virus. The restaurant will additionally open at 25 percent capacity, and enforce "rigorous" social distancing and sanitation standards.
The menu has a collection of small plates, vegetables, classics, and sharable dishes, but maybe not one dish stands out more than the "Cannibal Jerky."
There will also be 10 options of tap beer on the restaurants opening menu.
The restaurant will be the first production brewery in Manhattan.

USA, NJ: South 40 Brewing Co. set to open in Edison on October 24
|
Seven years ago, a friend gave Kevin Pacansky a beer-making kit, MyCentralJersey.com reported on October 22.
“I messed it up so bad that it just tasted like funky, murky water,” laughed Pacansky. “It wasn’t even carbonated properly. But I’m one of those people that when I mess something up so bad that it's atrocious, it’s going to eat away at me until I figure it out.”
Much has changed since then. Pacansky is set to open South 40 Brewing Co., a new brewery in the Raritan Center in Edison at noon Oct. 24.
After receiving the beer kit, Pacansky, a self-proclaimed foodie — but one who, at the time, didn’t even enjoy craft beer — spent four years homebrewing and experimenting with ingredients.
“When I was trying to figure out how to make it, I started liking craft beer, and then I started to realize you can put all these crazy ingredients in it like coffee beans and vanilla beans and I then got hooked trying to make different flavors,” he said.
Then, in 2017, he connected with a family friend interested in investing in a brewery. Pacansky found the space, a 2,000-square-foot former Army ammunition depot, at the end of 2018.

USA, IL: Stunt Brewing gets preliminary approval to launch in Glenview
|
There may soon be a new spot to grab a beer in Glenview. Resident Steven Ha, who currently operates Boba Club at 1825 Waukegan Road, is looking to turn that business into a 19-seat craft brewery and taproom for Stunt Brewing, Patch.com reported on October 22.
Following approval from the Glenview Plan Commission last month, the Glenview Village Board gave preliminary approval to a conditional use. The conditional use is necessary for Stunt Brewing to operate in the B-2 General Business District. Final approval is scheduled to be considered Nov. 5.
The proposed brewery and taproom will include food service. It will be closed to the public on Mondays and Tuesdays for brewing. Hours during the pandemic will be 3-10 p.m. Wednesday-Friday, noon-1 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.
Jeff Brady, director of community development, said at Tuesday's Village Board meeting that the owners have not set an opening date with some remodeling work needed.
In the meeting's agenda packet, Stunt Brewing describes itself as "aiming to shock and awe with beers huge in flavor and big in body, pushing the palette with small experimental batch brews. Always offering something new, awesome and even wild."

Australia & Vietnam: Australia engaging with Vietnamese brewers and maltsters to boost barley exports
|
With Vietnam’s malting barley imports set to nearly double by 2030, the Australian Export Grains Innovation Centre (AEGIC) is engaging with Vietnamese brewers and maltsters to ensure Australia maintains a significant market share, Grain Central reported on October 22.
Last week, AEGIC hosted a virtual event for the Vietnamese brewing and malting industry to provide an update on the 2020 growing season and communicate the benefits of Australian malting barley.
AEGIC barley markets manager Mary Raynes said Vietnam was famous for its beer drinking culture.
“Vietnam is in the top 10 beer markets globally and Australia is their largest supplier of malt and malting barley,” she said.
“Vietnam consumed more than 4.6 billion litres of beer in 2019. COVID has had an impact on beer consumption, however Vietnam is the third largest consumer of beer in Asia and the largest in South East Asia.”
Ms Raynes said beer production would increase by 2-3 per cent per annum towards 2030, boosting demand for malt and malting barley.
“AEGIC analysis forecasts that Vietnam’s malting capacity will increase towards 2030, which will result in malting barley imports jumping to about 330,000 tonnes, nearly double that required in 2019,” she said.

UK: Diageo to roll out alcohol-free Guinness next week

Diageo has unveiled an alcohol-free Guinness stout that will be rolled out in the UK next week, The Drinks Business reported on October 22.
The beer, which was made at Guinness’ St James Gate brewery in Dublin, comes in at 0.0% ABV, contains 16 calories per 100ml, and will be rolled out in the UK from 26 October. A full 440ml can contains just over 70 calories, and carry a recommended retail price of between £3.50 and £4.50 for a pack of four.
It is a de-alcoholised beer, where the alcohol is removed through a cold filtration method.
Most mainstream beers are either cold filtered to remove the yeast and bacteria, or heat pasteurised to kill all yeast and bacteria. Cold filtration allows the alcohol to be filtered out “without presenting thermal stress to the beer, protecting the integrity of its taste and character”, according to a spokesperson for Diageo, which owns the Guinness brewery.
Guinness 0.0 will be available in 440ml can 4-pack format in off-licences and supermarkets Waitrose and Morrison’s from 26 October, before rolling out to other retailers.
