Brewery news USA: Constellation Brands reports first-quarter profit topping analysts’ expectations
Constellation Brands Inc. on June 30 reported fiscal first-quarter earnings of $389.5 million, AP reported.

Brewery news France & Central African Republic: French anti-terrorism prosecutors open investigation against Groupe Castel
French anti-terrorism prosecutors have opened an investigation into allegations of potential complicity in war crimes made against Groupe Castel in the Central African Republic (CAR), a source close to the matter told Reuters on July 1.

A local unit of the French wine, beer and soft drink group is suspected of having made payments to local militia, the source said.

A spokesman for Groupe Castel said the company was fully cooperating with French authorities on the matter, and that an internal investigation following the first accusations had shown no evidence of wrongdoing.

Non-governmental organisation The Sentry earlier said the probe had been launched after it submitted a report detailing how a subsidiary of Groupe Castel, SUCAF RCA, may have made payments to the militia groups responsible for torture, rape, and mass killings.

Groupe Castel runs a sugar operation in the CAR, a country that has been racked by violent conflicts for years.

The source close to the matter said the probe that opened in Paris did not formally target the group or executives, but had been opened “against X”, which allows prosecutors to investigate in all directions.

With the launch of the investigation, The Sentry’s lawyers Clemence Witt and Anaïs Sarron told Reuters the prosecutor’s office ...More info on site

Barley news Canada: 2021-22 barley carry-out stocks projected at record low level
For 2021-22, the Canadian barley supply and demand situation includes sharply lower carry-in stocks, production and supply, as well as significantly reduced domestic feed consumption and exports, as compared to last year, Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada said in its June report.

Carry-out stocks are projected at 0.4 million tonnes (Mt), a record low level, due to sharply decreased supply.

The stocks-to-use ratio will continue to fall to a record low of 4%, versus 6% last year and 13% for five-year average.

The Lethbridge feed barley price for 2021-22 is forecast to hit a new high of C$435/t, up sharply from the old record of C$294/t set in 2020-21 and well above the previous five-year average. The 2021-22 prices are supported by uncertain new crop production prospects, tight domestic barley supplies, the decline in the availability of other domestic feed grain substitutes, robust demand and stronger prices of other grains. Barley prices though are being tempered by the large quantities of US corn imports into Western Canada since last September, limiting the price increase.

For 2022-23, Canadian barley acreage is projected at 3.0 million hectares (Mha), 10% lower than 2021-22 but still 5% and 8% above the previous five- and ten-year averages. Of the total, ...More info on site

Barley news Ukraine: Grain exports plunge 43% in June
Ukraine's grain exports plunged 43% year-on-year to 1.41 million metric tons in June, the agriculture ministry said on Friday, July 1, highlighting the damage being inflicted on a key sector of the economy by Russia's invasion.

Still, grain exports for the 2021-22 season ending June 30 rose 8.5% to 48.5 million tons, driven by strong shipments prior to the Feb. 24 invasion, the data showed.

Ukraine's grain exports have slumped since the start of the war as its Black Sea ports — the key route for shipments — have been largely closed off, driving up global food prices and prompting fears of shortages in Africa and the Middle East.

The ministry data showed wheat exports rose to 18.7 million tons in the 2021/22 season from 16.6 million a year earlier.

Corn exports edged up to 23.5 million tons from 23.1 million, while barley sales increased to around 5.8 million tons from 4.2 million.

The government has said Ukraine could harvest up 65 million tons of grain and oilseeds this year, compared with 106 million in 2021, due to the loss of land to Russian forces and lower grain yields.

The ministry said farmers in southern and eastern Ukraine had already started the 2022 harvest, threshing 293,800 ...More info on site
