Brewery news USA: Households demand for beer still quite resilient despite inflation – AB InBev
Inflation-ravaged households appear to still have a few bucks left over each week to reach for a 12-pack of Budweiser, Yahoo Money reported on June 9.

"Consumer demand in the U.S. has proven to be quite resilient," Anheuser-Busch InBev (AB InBev) CEO Michel Doukeris said at a fireside chat with Evercore ISI analysts on June 8. Doukeris's comments were shared by Evercore ISI in a new note to clients on June 9.

The note detailed how Doukeris citied a strong Memorial Day weekend of sales, with lagers such as Busch, Busch Light, and Michelob Ultra performing notably well in addition to explaining that the company is seeing a normalization of demand trends as consumers return to work and on-premise channels such as bars and restaurants.

Inflation is “higher everywhere,” Doukeris acknowledged, but went onto say that consumer purchasing power remains robust.

AB InBev stock fell 1% in the June 9th session and the shares are down 10.7% so far this year compared to a 14% drop for the S&P 500.

Barley news Canada & Australia: Canada importing around 100,000 tonnes of Australian barley this year
Canada is importing around 100,000 tonnes of Australian barley this year to help it fill deficits left by last year’s drought, and there could be more to follow, the Grain Central reported on June 9.

Australian shipping stems indicate one cargo was shipped in February, with a second due to berth on June 9 at the G3 terminal in Three Rivers, Quebec.

A third is now on its way from the Victorian port of Geelong, and includes barley loaded in South Australia.

The sales are part of a remarkable period in global barley trade in which China, the world’s biggest malting barley importer, closed the door in 2020 to Australian barley.

Since the 1990s, Australia has been one of China’s biggest, if not its biggest, supplier.

World markets have also felt the impact from last year’s drought in Canada, which has reduced its exportable surplus, and prompted it to make atypical purchases from Denmark and France as well as Australia to shore up domestic requirements.

Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and resulting blockades of Ukraine’s Black Sea ports have come as the latest reshaper of barley trade flows, which were outlined yesterday by Ag Scientia principal Lloyd George during an Australian Export Grains Innovation Centre malting barley ...More info on site

Brewery news Canada, BC: Braggot Brewing now open in North Vancouver’s Brewery District
A new brewery specializing in braggot, an ancient drink that combines elements of beer and mead, is now open in North Vancouver’s Brewery District, the Canadian Beer News reported on June 7.

Braggot Brewing has been founded by chemist and brewer Enrico Bovero, and produces its namesake beverage using honey from Bovero’s own beehives, and various local grains. The result is “100% organic, local, chemical free, sustainable, and our processes are optimized to be eco friendly, with low carbon foot print.”

The taproom offers three varieties of Braggot – Golden (5% abv), Amber (6.8% abv), and Dark (5.8% abv) – each created using a specific combination of honey and malt to produce the desired appearance, aroma and flavour. A small snack menu is also available.

Braggot Brewing is located at 102 – 370 Esplanade East in North Vancouver, and is open seven days a week.

Brewery news USA, WA: Natural 20 Brewing Co. opening second location
Spokane Valley-based Natural 20 Brewing Co. is opening a second location in a space formerly occupied by Hidden Mother Brewery in Spokane, The Spokesman-Review reported on June 7.

Owners Reece and Jackie Carlson recently signed a lease with SVN Cornerstone for a 3,750-square-foot space at 1303 N. Washington St., Suite B.

The expansion was prompted by the growing popularity of the brewery’s Spokane Valley location, at 13216 E. Sprague Ave., which has gained a loyal following of customers for its craft beer and tabletop gaming environment.

“The move to add a downtown location has us incredibly excited to be able to cater to our customers, both new and old, as well as to have the opportunity to share our amazing beer with more people who would have never had the chance to experience our product when we were only in the Valley,” Reece Carlson said.

The brewery hosts trivia nights, some of which are themed, and murder-mystery parties, among other events. Its emphasis is serving English, Irish, Scottish and American-style brews in an inclusive environment.

“We also have a large focus on tabletop gaming and ‘nerd culture,’ and cater to many customers who come into the brewery to discuss and engage in things such as ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, AL: SteeleHall Brewing Company coming to Main Street Trussville
The SteeleHall Brewing Company is coming to Main Street Trussville in the building of the former Slag Heap Brewing Company. SteeleHall Brewing Company will provide a family-friendly atmosphere for all who enjoy a relaxing environment, The Trussville Tribune reported on June 7.

The idea of SteeleHall Brewing Company came from c0-founders Eric Mitchell and Scott Worthington discussing what it would be like to start their own brewing company. Mitchell and Worthington met in 2014 while working at Heist Brewing in North Carolina, and as the years went by, they began to plan the opening of their own brewing company.

“We talked about it and always kind of knew in the back of our head this was something we wanted to do together, move back home per se and open our community brewery somewhere around here,” Mitchell said. “Trussville just happened to do its own little full blossom in that timeframe as well, and this door opened up for the building down in Trussville. So the opportunity somewhat presented itself at the perfect time. So it kind of wrote itself.”

The SteeleHall Brewing Company logo is an ode to the Alabama state flower, the camellia. It’s also symbolic of an SH to honor two ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, NY: Engine 14 Brewery already open in Naples
Greg and Kate Borden deserve a beer. Actually, make that a double, the Rochester Democrat and Chronicle reported on June 6.

If for nothing else than for their dogged perseverance finally achieving a dream that has been some 30 years in the making, brewing and providing a beer or two for the rest of Naples and those who enjoy visiting the picturesque village.

Supply chain issues because of the COVID-19 pandemic delayed the opening of the Bordens’ firehouse-themed Engine 14 Brewery until March of this year.

The Bordens — along with a cadre of family, friends and former firefighters — spent many long, back-breaking hours converting space owned by Hazlitt Red Cat Cellars, which, way back when it was Widmer Winery, was used to make champagne and other products.

They hauled tanks out, and of course, brought theirs in — and they had to be scrubbed down and polished.

Floors had to be redone. Walls and ceiling had to be redone. Windows had to be replaced. This is an old building, after all, one that used to be two stories high and in which the Bordens even discovered a smoky odor after drilling into the floor, an unexpected reminder of a devastating ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, VA: Bryant’s Cider in Shockoe Bottom, Richmond adding beer to its menu
Just in time for Father’s Day, Bryant’s Cider in Shockoe Bottom is adding beer to its menu on June 18.

Bryant’s Brewing, located at 2114 E. Main St., is an outgrowth of Bryant’s Cider. The business will be launching three beers that day: a Kolsch, an amber ale and a hazy IPA. A selection of 13 beverages will be available on tap, including the beers, several barrel-aged and seasonal ciders, and a peach seltzer.

Bryant’s Cider is the maker of Unicorn Fuel, which is canned and distributed across the state. The canning began after owner Jerry Thornton moved the business from a small location in Jackson Ward to Shockoe Bottom with an eye toward expansion.

The timing of the new location, which opened in March 2020, was less than ideal. Canning and distributing the cider while businesses were shuttered helped keep the operation afloat.

“Beer was always an operating idea,” said Thornton, who started the paperwork to open a business in Richmond in the summer of 2017, shortly after completing a cider-making program at Cornell University.

That fall, he attended brewing school at the University of Richmond to learn the business and logistics side of the alcoholic beverage industry.

When Thornton realized his space in Shockoe ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, TX: City Acre Brewing to close down for good in July
The COVID-19 pandemic has been tough on breweries, and while many have held on as long as they could, a significant number of Houston taprooms have recently closed, almost closed or gone up for sale, Chron reported on June 8.

The latest victim is City Acre Brewing, a beloved small brewery in north Houston whose backyard-style outdoor area served as a chill hangout spot as well as a venue for many weddings. It brewed blonde ales, pale ales, cream ales and IPAs, and offered cocktails, wine, cider and non-alcoholic drinks, too.

City Acre also had a robust food menu, including snacks like a fried pickle basket, and burgers made with pork, venison and bacon patties.

The kitchen closed on June 5 and the brewery will keep pulling pints until July 3, coinciding with its sixth birthday. In a message shared on City Acre's website and social media accounts, the team shared: "Rebuilding after Hurricane Harvey had us naively believing that we'd seen the worst disaster City Acre would encounter. We had some great years since, but after the pandemic hit, we've just never quite been able to get back to where we once were."

Some brewery operators seek new ownership before, or instead of, ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, IN: Barley Island Brewery closing at the end of July
Barley Island Brewery, one of the of the earliest craft brewers in Indiana, is closing at the end of July after 23 years, the IndyStar reported on June 9.

The bar and restaurant at 639 Conner St. announced in a Facebook post its last day would be July 23 when its lease nears expiration. The bar opened in 1999 but the building was sold a year ago.

“We have been through really good times and really bad times together,” the post by long-time bartender Michael Smith reads. “But the one thing I could always count on was that we would always be there for each other.”

The bar serves food, hosts musical performances and has a devoted clientele of regulars. The pub's craft beers are distributed throughout Indiana, including its signature brew, Barfly IPA. Other beers include Flat Top American Wheat and Brass Knuckles Oatmeal Stout.

Barley Island was serving craft beer long before the industry exploded in Central Indiana around 2014 and well before the area’s best known brewer, Sun King, launched in 2009.

When Barley Island opened, there were only a few local brewers, including Broad Ripple Brew Pub in Indianapolis, which claimed to be the state’s first in 1992.

Brewery news Namibia: Namibia Breweries financial diretor confidente of approval of majority stake sale to Heineken
Listed beverages maker Namibia Breweries Limited's financial director, Walder von Lieres, said he was confident the sale of 50,01% of the company to Heineken will be approved by the competition watchdog, the Namibian reported.

He said this at the public consultations on the deal on June 9, citing that competition will not be negatively impacted.

“We are very confident that we have presented a good case of why this is a compelling merger for Namibia Breweries and for the merging parties. We are confident that approval will be granted within the time frame set,” he said.

Considered to be one of the biggest deals in the country recently, Netherlands beermaker Heineken NV last year entered an agreement with the Ohlthaver & List (O&L) Group to buy its stake in Namibia Breweries Limited (NBL), valued at about N$3,5 billion.

Heineken, to date, has not disclosed how much it will pay for the stake.

At the public consultations in Windhoek on June 9, the Namibian Competition Commission chief executive Vitalis Ndalikokule said the deal was one of the big transactions in the economy and all views would be respected and considered in rejecting or accepting the buyout.

“We want to bring the voice of all concerned before we ...More info on site

Barley news Australia: Malting barley exports up 15% in April
Australia exported 774,340 tonnes of barley and 234,529t of sorghum in April, according to the latest export data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS), the Grain Central reported on June 10.

The malting total of 139,797t is up 15 per cent from the 121,452t shipped in March, while the feed total of 634,553t is up 3pc from the 614,055t shipped in March.

Sorghum exports more than doubled over the month to 234,529t, with China the destination for 94pc of the total.

Flexi Grain pool manager Sam Roache said reported April malting barley shipments, plus 33,000t classified as feed barley to Canada, but with malt as its likely endpoint, make it the biggest month for malting exports in more than two years.

“Numbers like this take us back to pre-COVID and even pre-China tariff days.

“South America continues to consistently underpin the program, with Asian demand also consistent.”

Mr Roache said malting stocks in Australia are tight, with spreads holding and even extending versus feed barley, despite the already high flat-price levels.

“The tight stocks and the onset of the Canadian harvest shipping in Sep-Oct will likely see shipments trimmed to well below current levels, but demand is expected to stay strong overall.”

Mr Roache said April was ...More info on site

Brewery news Germany: Brewers begging buyers to return empty crates of beer bottles
German breweries are begging buyers to return their empty crates of beer bottles amid ongoing shortages.

The New York Times reported the news.

Energy prices for the manufacture of glass have played a role in the shortage, as has the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, which supplies German brewers with glass.

Russian blockades of Ukrainian ports have also hampered exports out of the country, threatening a global food crisis that could become catastrophic.

"It is deadly for small brewers," Stefan Fritsche, who runs a German brewery, told the Times, citing difficulties in getting customers to lug their empty crates back to the stores.

In a statement sent to Insider, general manager of the German Brewers' Association, Holger Eichele, said the shortages were "indirectly related" to the conflict in Ukraine.

"It is a fact that unfortunately several glass factories in Ukraine have been destroyed by Russian attacks or had to close down and therefore can no longer deliver to Western Europe. This has increased the overall demand for glass products and glass containers in Germany as well," the statement added.

Eichele also cited reduced activity at factories as a result of rising energy costs as a reason for the shortages, which was also pushing up the price ...More info on site

Barley news Ukraine & Russia & Turkey: Ukraine grain export plan deemed reasonable - Turkey
Turkey's foreign minister said on June 6 a United Nations plan to ease a global food crisis by restarting Ukrainian grain exports along a sea corridor was "reasonable", and required more talks with Moscow and Kyiv to ensure ships' safety.

Speaking alongside Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, Turkey's Mevlut Cavusoglu said their meeting in Ankara was fruitful, adding Turkey's latest contacts and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy's recent statements showed there may be a basis for a return to talks.

But Ukraine's ambassador to Turkey accused Russia of putting forward unrealistic proposals, such as checking vessels.

Lavrov said the onus was on Ukraine to solve the grain shipments problem by clearing mines from its Black Sea ports and that Russia needed to take no action because it had already made the necessary commitments.

"We state daily that we're ready to guarantee the safety of vessels leaving Ukrainian ports and heading for (Turkish waters), we're ready to do that in cooperation with our Turkish colleagues," he said after the talks with Cavusoglu.

Ukraine's foreign ministry, however, dismissed as "empty words" Lavrov's assurances that Moscow will not use the situation to its advantage if Kyiv allows grain shipments to leave safely via the Black Sea.

Brewery news Thailand: Bill seeking to give opportunities to small-scale brewers sails through the first reading
Thai opposition Move Forward Party’s Progressive Liquor Bill, seeking to give opportunities to small-scale brewers, sailed through the first reading with 178 “yes” votes, 137 “no” votes and 15 abstentions, The Nation reported on June 2.

The bill, which seeks to amend the Excise Tax Act, will be scrutinised by a 25-member committee over the next seven days before it is submitted for second and final readings.

The 178 who voted affirmative included several MPs from the government camp, including 23 from the Democrat Party, nine from Bhumjaithai and two from Palang Pracharath.

After the vote, Move Forward MPs cheered and several hugged Taopiphop Limjittrakorn, who had proposed the bill.

The bill was inspired by Taopiphop’s arrest for brewing craft beer without permission in January 2017.

He proposed the Progressive Liquor Bill on May 29, 2020, when he was a Future Forward Party MP. However, it was rejected by the Cabinet in February this year and returned to the House for further deliberation.

Taopiphop has been pushing for the Excise Tax Act to be amended because it limits brewers’ rights and freedom to do business.

He admitted that he was excited when the bill returned to the House of Representatives for deliberation on February 2.

Brewery news India: Corona beer switches to barley straw packaging
In India, AB InBev’s popular Corona beer brand has switched its cardboard six-pack packaging to waste barley straw, TheDigest reported on June 6.

The new material is as durable as its predecessor but does not require virgin wood. The straw would also otherwise be burned—a widespread practice for agricultural waste that is a key contributor to India’s notoriously poor air quality.

“This is also a vital step towards achieving our larger global goal of ensuring that 100% of our product packaging will be returnable or made from a majority of recycled content by 2025,” Ashwin Kak, Head of Procurement & Sustainability, India & South East Asia, AB InBev, says in a press statement. “At AB InBev, our dream is to create a future with more cheers, and we are proud to invest in sustainable solutions that positively impact the environment and our communities.”

The new six pack holders were developed by AB InBev in partnership with sustainable packaging company Craste. More than three years in development, the holders are being piloted in Bangalore before being rolled out to other Indian states.
