Barley news North America: Export price indications for Canadian barley remain firm
Canadian barley export price indications remain firm, and aligned to France price levels, RMI Analytics said in their latest report earlier this month.

Global market prices have risen to a point where Canada is competitive again on the world stage (crop 2022). Farmer contracting prices for crop 2022 continue to rise in an attempt to secure malting barley area. Prices are still below crop 2021 levels following the drought, which may limit farmer interest.

Imported US corn into Alberta totalled 650 thousand tonnes during February 2022, and continues on a very strong import plan which may reach 5 mln tonnes by the end of this crop year.

Barley news USA: Barley stocks estimated 40% down this year
USDA stocks and plantings report of March 31, 2022 puts U.S. wheat stocks 22% down y/y to 28 mln tonnes, barley stocks 40% down to 1.58 mln tonnes, H. M. Gauger GmbH said in their April report.

The planting intentions upset markets, soybeans are up from 87.2 to 90.95 mln acres, corn down from 93.4 to 89.5 mln acres. Wheat is slightly up to 47.35 mln acres. Barley is up from 2.66 to 2.94 mln acres, the best figure since years and a consequence of the bad supply gap in the present campaign.

Both U.S. wheat and corn stocks and acreage show the risk of very tight balances in 2022/23. The inverse of new crop prices has shrunk.

Brewery news USA, OR: Wild Ride Brewing working on expansion in Prineville
The brainchild of a group of lifelong friends to create a production brewery came alive in 2014, when Wild Ride Brewing opened in Redmond, the Portland Tribune reported on April 19.

The brewery and tap room, which are located at 332 SW Fifth St., in Redmond, have been brewing award-winning beers since the beginning and continue to craft innovative styles. They are now open seven days per week, with food options available from the food cart community located on their patio. The family-friendly tap room has indoor and outdoor seating to fit the Central Oregon lifestyle.Â

Towards the end of last year, Wild Ride Brewing made the decision to expand to Prineville, and plans began to renovate the area by Sunrise Pool and Spa, 1500 NE Third St. There will be a brewhouse, tap room, four food trucks and multiple fire pits on the recently completed patio. As with their Redmond venue, it was a priority to find the perfect location.

"We will have a 5BBL two-vessel brewhouse, with four 5BBL fermentation vessels and two 5BBL brite tanks," said co-owner of Wild Ride Brewery, Brian Mitchell. "The small batch brewhouse (compared to our 20BBL production brewhouse in Redmond) will allow us the ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, WA: Bickersons Brewhouse to open its doors in renton this weekend
The Renton-based Bickersons Brewhouse will be opening its doors this weekend, My Ballard reported on April 20.

Bickersons has taken over the former Peddler Brewing location at 1514 Leary Ave NW; Peddler closed in March after nine years in the neighborhood.

Owners Frank Castro and Shaunn Siekawitch opened Bickersons in Renton in 2020 and told My Ballard they’d been looking to expand into Seattle for the past year. They’re keeping their Renton location open, but plan to do most of their brewing in their new Ballard home.

Bickersons’ first day will be Saturday, April 23. They’ll be open from 12 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Saturday and from 12 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Sunday. For Saturday’s opening celebration, they’ll have live music from Danny Godinez and food from Scooby Dogs food truck.

Brewery news USA, FL: Wolf Branch Brewing Co. opening location in downtown Leesburg
Wolf Branch Brewing Co. is opening a location in downtown Leesburg in less than six months, the Daily Commercial reported on April 20.

Business is booming for this local brewery, which currently has two locations — one in historic downtown Eustis, another at the Mount Dora Marketplace.

Jose Villafana, co-owner of Wolf Branching Brewing Co, said he's thrilled to be opening at 707 West Main Street.

"We're really excited to open especially because this one, we're actually purchasing the building so it will feel like it will be more ours," he said. "I always felt an attachment to Leesburg."

Wolf Branch has been serving up its own craft beer to the community for over four years now.

Villafana said Wolf Branch aims to keep the menu balanced with choices of IPAs, brown ales, pale ales, blonde ale, stouts and fruit beer.

"We love doing a lot of what we call one-offs — like a bunch of different, crazy stuff," Villafana said.

This week they're brewing "Coocha," a creamy, malt-forward coffee milk stout with heavy coffee flavors and hints of cocoa nibs. The beer has a deep brown hue and a dark foamy head.

Another Wolf Branch favorite is "The Beastwood," a peanut butter banana brown ale, that ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, WY: Casper City Council grants new microbrewery liquor license to Frontier Brewing Company
On Tuesday, April 19, the Casper City Council voted 6–0 in favor of granting a new microbrewery liquor license to Frontier Brewing Company that will allow the business to operate out of its new space inside of the former Fox III Theater, the Oil City News reported on April 20.

Frontier is in the process of moving from its original 117 E. Second St. location to the former theater space located at 150 W. Second St. The company opened in Casper in 2017. Since that time, the number of breweries has grown to include Gruner Brothers, Skull Tree, Mountain Hops, Oil City Beer Company, Black Tooth, and, most recently, Stahoo’s Brewery and Taproom.

Another new brewery called Bull Horn Brewing has applied for a microbrewery license in Casper. On Tuesday, April 19, the city council set May 3 as the public hearing date for consideration of that request.

The fee for a microbrewery license is $500 and there is not a limit on the number of this type of liquor license that the city can issue.

Brewery news Canada, BC: Old Yale Brewing to expand to second location in downtown Abbotsford
Old Yale Brewing has announced plans to expand beyond its current home in Chilliwack, BC, with the upcoming opening of a second location in downtown Abbotsford, the Canadian Beer News reported on April 19.

As described in the announcement:

The 10,000 square foot, 220 seat Craft Brewery + Kitchen will feature a 10 hectoliter brewhouse, a full bar with 15 beers on tap, 4 of which will come directly from 10hl serving tanks, a full service 700-square foot kitchen and a cozy 30-seat covered patio.

Other features for the outdoor and cabin-inspired Abbotsford location include a games area, Little Explorers corner, a beer and merchandise store and unique design elements like a 12 ft tree, cabin-like booths and a river-inspired mural created by local artist Pencil Fingerz.

“We are thrilled to finally announce our expansion into Abbotsford,” said Zach Van Leeuwen, Managing Partner of Old Yale Brewing, in a statement. “We started this project in late 2019, and it’s been a long road. We’ve been furiously working behind the scenes to ensure that we can replicate the amazing customer experience we offer to our customers in Chilliwack, and bring it to our friends, family and customers in the beautiful city of Abbotsford.”

Brewery news USA, FL: Wulfaven Brewing Co. to debut in Tampa later this year
Marketing itself as “Carrollwood’s first microbrewery,” family-owned Wulfaven Brewing Co. says it will debut in Tampa later this year, cltampa.com reported on April 20.

A combination of the words “wolf” and “haven,” the name of Tampa’s newest brewery comes from the collective and welcoming and mindset of the Lazzara family—the owners of the upcoming Wulfaven Brewing Co.

“Our tap list will be a combination of all things crisp and clean. Of course, also we’ll be slinging some juicy and bitter IPAs and pale ales for all of you hop chasers out there!” its website reads.

The Lazzara family has spent the last six months building its new brewery from the ground up, located at 10828 Perez Dr. in Tampa’s Carrollwood neighborhood, near the intersection of Gunn Highway and Casey Road. According to Facebook, recent construction progress on the new Wulfaven space includes a new bar base, freshly-stuccoed patio walls and installed window frames.

Future customers can expect a shaded and fan-equipped patio and recreational outdoor space when the new brewery opens in a few months. The FAQ section on the Wulfaven website also states that dogs are welcomed on the patio, while kiddos are welcome until about 8:30 p.m.; after that, service becomes 21+.

Brewery news USA, VA: Rockfish Brewing Company opening new location in Charlottesville’s Downtown Mall
Rockfish Brewing Company is opening the doors of its new location in Charlottesville’s Downtown Mall, NBC29.com reported on April 19.

The micro-brewery is currently open Thursday through Sunday, but it hopes to soon be operating every day.

“Having the actual beer produced here on-site and consumed on-site, I think, gives a local flare,” owner Peter McMindes said. “I think it gives more reasons for people to come down and explore the area.”

Rockfish also has its other location on Preston Avenue.

Brewery news USA, OR: Xicha Brewing opening second location in Eugene
Xicha Brewing, Oregon's only Latinx-owned brewery, is extending its roots and opening a location in Eugene, the Statesman Journal reported on April 20.

Owner Ben Mendoza said they're excited to find more opportunities to introduce themselves to more of the community, and since Eugene's was so close it was the best first step.

"Eugene makes a lot of sense for us primarily because of the size and location by the I-5 corridor," Mendoza said. "We've been (shipping and offering products to Eugene) for a while now, and we know Eugene a little better, so that's partly why we're going in Eugene — specifically south Eugene."

For now, Mendoza is keeping the address of the second location under wraps. The idea for their second location had been in the works prior to the pandemic, but like many other business owners Mendoza had to rethink the strategy until some more stability returned to the economy.

The location is not expected to open until late June. Originally, Mendoza had planned to open closer to early May to coincide with Cinco De Mayo. However, delays in getting supplies and construction forced a later opening date.

"In some weird crazy world, (opening on our original projected date) may happen, but ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, NC: The newest Legion Brewing location in Charlotte to open to public on May 2
The newest Legion Brewing location in Charlotte will be opening to the public on May 2, WBTV reported on April 20.

Known for its Juicy Jay IPA, the new brewery located at 2013 West Morehead Street will be 25,000 square feet with a 4,000-square-foot taproom and 4,000 square-foot courtyard beer garden.

A unique feature of the new taproom is that the brewing equipment that begins the brewing process is right behind the bar, so guests will have an open window into the production facility to watch the brewing take place.

“The entire Legion team has been looking forward to this day for a while,” said Phil Buchy, owner and CEO of Legion Brewing. “I’m excited to finally share our West Morehead taproom with the local community. This is a fast-growing, evolving part of town and such a great tailgating spot for our football and soccer team fans.”

Legion West Morehead will also offer a unique chef-driven menu with a focus on international street foods—tacos al pastor, schwarma, gyros and more, served on house-made tortillas and pita bread

The Legion team started producing beer at the new location in Fall 2021, but the taproom build-out was delayed due to several COVID-related setbacks

With a 100,000-barrel capacity, the ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, IN: Kismetic Beer Company launches on the near east side of Indianapolis
A new microbrewery with a speakeasy vibe and '70s style has opened on the near east side of Indianapolis, WRTV reported on April 20.

Kismetic Beer Company is situated inside the 201 Studios, located at 201 S. Rural St., in the Twin Aire neighborhood.

Kismetic is almost like a cocktail bar—just with beer.

Their groovy kismet purple and turquoise blue brand colors surround the wide-open brew bar, providing a warm welcome. The various seating options include long booths with velvet royal blue exterior, single black leather chairs, and plenty of high-top options.

It's definitely all in the details for Kismetic's owners, Nicole and Ryan Oesch.

"[It's] a curated experience, from the beer to the brand name to the interior decor," Nicole told WRTV ahead of its grand opening event over the weekend. "I just wanted somewhere that I felt was really comfortable with really great beer that I felt I could sit there for hours with my friends and just like, hang out, listen to great music, and have some great beers."

Kismetic is a microbrewery Nicole has wanted to open for a while. She and her husband Ryan have been in the craft beer industry for years, and the last two years of the pandemic ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, WY: Bull Horn Brewing LLC applies for new microbrewery liquor license
The City of Casper has received an application from Bull Horn Brewing LLC for a new microbrewery liquor license, the Oil City News reported on April 20.

Bull Horn is seeking the license to operate at 2027 E. Yellowstone Highway Unit B. If the City Council approves the request, Bull Horn would add to what is a growing brewery district in the area. In March, the council approved a new microbrewery license for Stahoo’s Brewery and Taproom at 1015 East C St.; Skull Tree Brewing and Mountain Hops Brewhouse also are located in the neighborhood.

On Tuesday, the City Council will look to establish May 3 as the public hearing date for Bull Horn’s request. City staff explain in a memo that Bull Horn would be located inside the same building as O’Reilly Auto Parts.

“This building was split in half, and the brewery will occupy the back portion of the building while O’Reilly Auto Parts will occupy the front portion,” the memo states.

Bull Horn plans to open in June, according to city staff.

Casper currently has seven microbrewery licenses issued. A cap on the number of microbrewery licenses a municipality can issue was repealed in 2021, city staff explain, so there is no ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, IA: Thew Brewing ceases brewing operations
Cedar Rapids Thew Brewing posted on Facebook on April 19 it had ceased brewing operations, The Gazette reported.

“As you are no doubt aware, the pressures on small businesses are at an all-time high, and the craft beer market is increasingly competitive. After much reflection, we have decided to take the business into an exciting new direction that will allow us to continue making positive contributions to the community. As part of this, we have made the difficult decision to cease brewing operations at Thew effective immediately,” co-owners Travis and Haley Flenker wrote.

They opened the business, at 301 Second Ave. SE, in the city’s Kingston Village neighborhood, in 2018.

“We will be making announcements about our new venture in the coming weeks,” the post said. “Our taproom will remain open until further notice.”

Brewery news India: Owner of Indian craft beer Bira 91 goes back to its roots to beat inflation
B9 Beverages Pvt., the owner of Indian craft beer Bira 91, is pushing its premium bottles more to protect its margin as costs of ingredients, energy and transport escalate.

The current operating environment is “extremely tough” as costs have risen 30-70%, forcing the company to sell more of its premium portfolio compared to the mass-market products, Chief Executive Officer Ankur Jain, who founded the brewer in 2015, told BloombergQuint in an interview.

The company began by selling premium beer and expanded into the mass-market category just before the pandemic. Still, it has a “double-digit” market share in the premium segment, Jain said without disclosing the number. Having a stronger portfolio of beers targeting consumers in larger cities than towns gives it an advantage: wealthier drinkers are less sensitive to price increases.

The brewer's strategy underscores how consumer firms are trying ease the pinch of higher costs. Covid-19 disrupted supply chains, sending commodity prices soaring. Barley has surged 62.5% over a year earlier and 5% sequentially in the quarter ended March, according to Motilal Oswal report, with the latest spike driven by Russia's war in Ukraine. Ukraine, with 18% of exports in 2022, is among the top five producers of barley, it said. ...More info on site

The largest Australian owned brewery Coopers Brewery has announced plans to enter the whiskey market and will build a A$50 million visitor centre, microbrewery and whisky distillery at its Regency Park site in Adelaide, the Australian Manufacturing Forum reported on April 22.

In its 160th year, privately-owned Coopers has its eyes on domestic and international tourists with the investment which brings total investment at the site to more than A$400 million.

Coopers Managing Director Dr Tim Cooper said: “We’re very proud of our story over the past 160 years, arising from humble beginnings to prevail as an Australian-owned and operated brewery despite wars, recessions and takeover offers.

Brewery news Romania: Molson Coors’ Pravha beer expands into Romania
Praha, a Pilsner from Staropramen that brings together lower alcohol, light taste and bold flavor, has expanded into Romania, continuing its rapid expansion across Europe after launching just over a year ago, the MarketScreener reported on April 19.

Praha has proved popular among drinkers in Bulgaria, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Slovenia, Hungary and Serbia because of its combination of bold flavor and light taste, says Boris Jaranovic, senior manager for premium brands in Central and Eastern Europe.

"Younger consumers want to try new, progressive types of beer that are smooth in taste but also bold in flavor and image. That's why Praha achieved such success in a short amount of time," Jaranovic says. "The quality and craftsmanship mean a lot."

The brand's momentum led to the decision to expand into Romania, one of the region's biggest markets and its sixth in Central and Eastern Europe.

With the expansion, the brand expects to double its volume.

The opportunity to introduce a premium, 4% alcohol-by-volume Pilsner with a strong Czech pedigree like Praha's is illustrative of Molson Coors Beverage Company's strategy of growing its above-premium portfolio.

Along with Praha, the company has found resounding success with Madri Excepcional in Ireland and the U.K., leading an expansion into the ...More info on site

Barley news UK: Defra approves field trails of genetically modified barley
Defra has approved field trials of genetically modified barley that scientists say could reduce the need for synthetic fertilisers, the Farmers Weekly reported on April 21.

The trial, run by researchers at the Crop Science Centre in Cambridge, will evaluate whether improved crop interaction with naturally occurring soil fungi can result in more sustainable food production.

The barley variety has been genetically modified to boost expression levels of the NSP2 gene.

This gene is naturally present in barley and boosting its expression enhances the crop’s capacity to engage with mycorrhizal fungi.

Starting this April, the small field trials will take place over the next five years at three sites operated by the Crop Science Centre, which is a partnership between the National Institute of Agricultural Botany (Niab) and the University of Cambridge.

Professor Giles Oldroyd is leading the trial and said there was an urgent need to satisfy the demands of a growing population, while respecting limits on natural resources.

“We believe biotechnology can be a valuable tool for expanding the options available to farmers around the world,” he said.

The trial will also test varieties of barley that have been gene-edited to suppress their interaction with arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF).

The scientists say this will help them ...More info on site
