Brewery news USA, MI: Upper Michigan’s newest brewery now open in Marenisco
Upper Michigan’s newest brewery is now open on Main Street in Marenisco, WLUC reported on April 16.

It’s called Five Sons Brewery, and the soft opening for friends and family was held on April 15.

The owner was bit by the brewing bug back in 2017 and has converted his wife’s former medical clinic into his brewery. For Five Sons Brewery, the focus is on more traditional German brews.

“It’s craft brewing, just like any other craft brewer, but what I’m trying to do a little bit different than some other places is I’m looking at traditional German brewing,” owner Bruce Mahler said. “We’re going to be busy today, I hope we stay busy and I invite everyone to come down.”

The grand opening for Five Sons Brewery will be around July 4.

Brewery news USA, NY: Lasting Joy Brewery to open a brewery in Tivoli in May
The one-of-a-kind brewery will be the perfect place to spend the day, the Hudson Valley Country reported on April 18.

Over the last few years, to nobody's surprise, the Hudson Valley has become a hotspot for wineries and breweries. The brewery business in the Hudson Valley is becoming larger and larger by the day and it looks like the small town of Tivoli, New York is the next Hudson Valley town to reap some of the brewery benefits.

Lasting Joy Brewery has officially announced that they are expecting to open a one-of-a-kind brewery in Tivoli in May and once open, guests are in for an amazing experience while sipping on some great beers, as well as wine, cider, spirits, and food from neighboring producers.

The brewery is the work of longtime brewer Alex Wenner, and as Alex and his wife Emily were looking to make their dream brewery come to life, they were looking for the perfect location to incorporate family, beer, and brewing, and found it in Tivoli. Alex said, "My favorite things are my family, and beer and brewing. Over the years as Emily and I have become parents of four, I’ve always been on the hunt for a place where ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, PA: Antifragile Brewing Company anticipating soft openting for the end of the week
Downtown State College has plenty of coffee shops, restaurants, niche stores and bars, but one thing it hasn’t had is a brewery, StateCollege.com reported on April 18.

Lisa Harpster and John Schaffer are changing that. Their Antifragile Brewing Company, the first brewery within the borough, will open at 324 E. Calder Way, in the former location of Pablo’s Chicken and Barranquero Café. A soft opening is anticipated for the end of the week.

Harpster and Schaffer, who will function as Antifragile’s co-owners, began their brewing journey not with a passion for beer, but for kombucha.

Six years ago, Schaffer was in San Francisco for the Super Bowl and had some fermented tea that he really enjoyed. Upon his return to State College, he couldn’t find anything that remotely compared. Time passed, he went on a beer trip to Vermont, and he noticed that all of the craft breweries had kombucha on tap, too.

“Why can’t we do this in State College?” he wondered.

So, Schaffer came back home, dedicated himself to this idea, and, eventually, the duo landed on their regular naked kombucha. Schaffer worked on the brewing aspect, while Harpster spent time experimenting with flavors and eventually social media and branding.

The pair started off ...More info on site

Brewery news Canada, ON: Newark Brewing Company coming to Beamsville in May
A new brewpub is coming to Beamsville in May, serving up beer and food inspired by Europe, TheRecord.com reported on April 18.

Since 2019, Newark Brewing Company has been creating German- and Belgian-style craft beers with an emphasis on quality and tradition.

Now, they’re opening a restaurant and taproom, hoping to bring a taste of classic European beer to Niagara.

Or, as founder Griffin Data put it, “traditional beers with a Niagara flair.”

The venue, at 4766 Christie Dr., Beamsville, will feature a bar serving all of Newark Brewing’s beers, as well as guest beers, ciders and wines from Niagara.

The brewery is partnering with Bluecollar Catering to create a menu full of European classics to pair with the beer, including wurst and schnitzel with a beer-infused gravy.

Data hopes that they will be able to source everything locally, from the guest drinks to the food.

The mission, Data explained, is simple.

“We want good food, good beer, and we want people to leave satisfied,” he said.

Newark Brewing started making beers in March 2019 and its flagship beer, Dunkel Lager, debuted at the LCBO that November.

However, the pandemic made it hard for the brewers to get the beers into the hands of the public, and Data and the ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, NY: Finback Brewery planning new microbrewery and taproom in Long Island City
Long Island City, Queens’ brewery game is about to get a bit stronger.

Finback Brewery plans to open a 3,800-square-foot microbrewery and taproom at the base of the Sven luxury residential tower at 29-59 Northern Boulevard, the New York Post first reported.

The brewery — known for its India pale ale and stouts — signed a 15-year lease for the ground-floor space, where it plans to focus on “fruit-forward” sour beers conditioned in “wooden foeders [large barrels] and ceramic fermentation crocks” when it opens later this year, according to landlord the Durst Organization. A spokesperson for Durst declined to provide the asking rent.

“Brewery taprooms have become important social spaces in the city and we are thrilled to become a part of the Long Island City community,” Basil Lee, the co-owner of Finback, said in a statement. “The opportunity to create a destination at the iconic Sven deepens our Queens roots, and we are particularly excited to showcase our mixed-fermentation sour ales that highlight New York fruits and ingredients.”

Finback started in 2013 with a 25-barrel brewery in Glendale, Queens, and last year opened its second brewhouse in Gowanus, Brooklyn, where it also roasts coffee, AmNew York reported.

And Finback will be in good ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, ND: Goose River Brewing hopes to have a soft opening as early as this week
With the Hillsboro Cafe open under new ownership and a new coffee and ice cream shop on its way, Goose River Brewing will be one of a few new businesses this spring in downtown Hillsboro. Owner Terry Sando hopes his soon-to-open brewery will help make downtown a destination, the Grand Forks Herald reported on April 19.

“We think a brewpub will help do that,” said Sando. “With some of the beer apps and stuff that is available to help locate us, we’ll hopefully be able to draw some people off I-29.”

He hopes to hold a soft opening with a limited restaurant menu as early as this week.

“We’re going to hold off on the grand opening until we have our first batch of beer,” he said.

Once fully operational, Goose River Brewing will be a family-friendly brewpub establishment with food and drinks. Beer will be sold on and off sale, and the bar will have 24 taps. Sando says half of those will be Goose River Brewing beer that rotates with each season. Once the kitchen is open, the menu will include food that uses the brewery’s own beer — things like beer cheese soup, beer brats and different varieties of chili.

Brewery news USA, FL: Pinellas Park is getting its first craft brewery
A family dream brought to life, Pinellas Park is getting its first craft brewery with the opening of Pee-Pa’s Garage this May. Located at 6340 49th Street North, Pee-Pa’s Garage Craft Brewery is opening in the former home of North St. Pete Collison. Renovation of the site began in January and the brewery is expected to open its doors in mid-to-late May, I Love the Burg reported on April 19.

The 4,000 square foot brewpub will put guests in the middle of the brewing action, and its stage will host live music, comedy shows and bingo nights. Pee-Pa’s Garage will also have a BBQ food truck on weekends and offer assorted light bites during the week, but ownership is putting a beer-first emphasis on creating “a cozy,” welcoming and relaxed place to enjoy local craft brews.

A family-run brewery with decades of local ties and a strong devotion to the community, Pee-Pa’s Garage is bringing a new approach to craft breweries in the area, creating a place that fits the personalities of St. Pete and Pinellas Park. The brewery and its tasting room are a combination of the characteristics that inspired it – cars, beer, industrial art, and an easygoing country vibe. ...More info on site

Brewery news World: Heineken due to raise beer prices for consumers
Heineken is due to raise beer prices for consumers as it expects significant increases in production costs, ITV reported on April 20.

Earlier this year, the world's second largest brewer, which also makes Birra Moretti and Amstel, saw soaring costs due to commodity inflation and rising supply chain costs.

On April 20, the Dutch brewer said it will look to raise prices further as it warned of tough conditions ahead.

Dolf van den Brink, chairman of the company, said: “Looking ahead, we see more macro-economic uncertainty and expect significant additional inflationary headwinds putting further pressure on our cost base.

“We will take additional actions including pricing to manage these challenges whilst we continue to invest in superior, balanced growth and sustainable value creation.”

Despite the uncertain outlook, Heineken sold more beer than expected over the past three months as drinkers returned to pubs and bars following the removal of Covid restrictions.

The group said net revenues jumped by 24.9% to 5.7 billion euros for the three months to March.

The company added that revenues also benefited from a 5.7% increase in volumes.

But, along with other brewers, Heineken has faced financial pressures as Russia's invasion of Ukraine has caused grain costs to spike, alongside steep rises in the ...More info on site

Barley news Ukraine: Agriculture ministry revises up its spring crops area forecast
Ukraine's agriculture ministry on April 15 revised up its forecast for the area to be sown to 2022 spring crops, giving no reason for the new outlook, the Successful Farming reported.

Around 14 million hectares of various grains, cereals, and oilseed might be sown this year, compared with the previous forecast of 13.4 million hectares, the ministry said in a report.

The acreage is still smaller than in 2021 due to hostilities in some Ukrainian regions cause by the Russian invasion. Ukraine sowed a total of 16.9 million hectares of spring crops in 2021.

Ukraine is a major global agriculture producer and exporter, but the Russian invasion since February is expected to lead to a sharp reduction in the 2022 harvest and exports in the forthcoming 2022/23 season.

The ministry said farmers had already started sowing spring wheat, barley, peas, sunflower, rape seed, sugar beet, and soybeans.

It said farmers had sown 146,400 hectares of spring wheat, 742,900 hectares of spring barley, 100,500 hectares of peas, 122,600 hectares of corn, 433,700 hectares of sunflower, 110,300 hectares of sugar beet and some other crops.

The ministry gave no exact expected sowing acreage for each commodity.

In the autumn, Ukraine also sowed 7.6 million hectares of winter grains, including ...More info on site

Brewery news UK: Guinness launches cold brew coffee beer in the UK
Guinness has launched a cold brew coffee beer in the UK as parent company Diageo looks to expand the brand beyond pints of the black stuff, Yahoo Finance reported on April 19.

The new beer, which will be available in 440ml cans in Tesco stores from April 19 and other stores in the coming weeks, has already been on sale in the US for a number of months.

According to Guinness, the drink picks up on the existing coffee flavours in a pint of Guinness by adding cold brew coffee, which has been steeped in cold water for long periods.

The drink has around 2mg of caffeine per can, about the same as a cup of decaf coffee.

“The coffee notes already in Guinness make the creation of Guinness cold brew coffee beer a natural – and delicious – next step in our proud history of innovation,” said Grainne Wafer, global brand director for Guinness.

She said the company hoped the product would introduce new consumers to the brand.

Guinness hopes to launch the produce in more countries across Europe and Asia this year.

It comes amid a major expansion of the Guinness brand beyond the traditional pints it is best known for.

Over the last year, Diageo ...More info on site
