USA: Craft beer scene grows by 8% in 2021
|
US craft breweries collectively produced 24.8 million barrels of beer last year, according to new figures from the Brewers Association (BA).
In the BA’s ‘Annual Craft Brewing Industry Production Report’ the findings revealed that, in 2021, the US craft beer scene realised 8% growth, increasing craft’s overall beer market share by volume to 13.1%, up from 12.2% the previous year.
According to the data, the overall beer market in the US grew 1% by volume in 2021 and retail dollar value was estimated at US$26.9 billion, representing 26.8% market share and 21% growth over 2020.
As stated in the figures, this growth is stronger than volume primarily due to the channel shift back to people going out to bars, taprooms and restaurants to drink, which has a higher average retail value than the sell through via bottleshops, stores and online orders.
Additionally, the report revealed that craft brewers provided more than 172,643 direct jobs – a 25% increase from 2020 – showing that the industry gives back to the economy and helps people out of unemployment.

USA: Constellation Brands Inc.’s controlling family proposes relinquishing some of its voting power
|
Constellation Brands Inc.’s controlling family proposed relinquishing some of its voting power, which could make the Corona beer maker more flexible for deals, Bloomberg reported on April 4.
The Sands family has proposed that each share of Class B common stock be converted into 1.35 shares of Class A common stock, Constellation said in statement on April 4. The family would continue to be the company’s largest shareholder, but its voting power would be cut to 19.7% from 59.5%, according to a separate regulatory filing.
A simplified structure would be better aligned with the “one vote per share” policy widely supported by corporate-governance experts, the Sands family said. The family said its proposal wasn’t made in connection with any other corporate transaction. The change should be well-received by investors, since they have been frustrated by their lack of say in how the company spends its cash, Cowen analyst Vivien Azer said.
“This has been particularly topical in the last few months given ongoing unsubstantiated press reporting around a potential transaction with” energy-drinks producer Monster Beverage Corp., Azer said in a research note.

USA, PA: South County Brewing Company holds ribbon-cutting ceremony in York
|
South County Brewing Company held an open house and ribbon-cutting ceremony on April 1, 2022 to celebrate the grand opening of their new flagship brewery located at 170 Crossway Drive in York, PA, Breweries in PA reported.
On hand to cut the ribbon and greet invited guests was the ownership team of Sam and Kellee Terroso and JR and Jen Heaps. They were joined by PA State Senator Kristin Phillips-Hill, PA State Representative Mike Jones, York Township commissioners and administrative staff, and multiple construction partners.
Representatives from Traditions Bank, the York County Economic Alliance, and the Lancaster EDC were also in attendance to celebrate the completion of their support. More than 200 family, friends, media, and long-standing retail partners also enjoyed the unveiling and the festivities. Guests were able to sample appetizers and artisan pizza crafted by South County’s talented and experienced kitchen.
At the celebration, guests toured the new facility and learned about the best-in-class brewing, canning, and distilling equipment that highlight the new flagship location. South County expects to begin distilling operations with their Vendome Copper still in the coming months.

USA, TN: Huckleberry Brewing coming soon to Franklin
|
Huckleberry Brewing will open soon in Franklin, the Williamson Source reported on April 3.
A website, with limited information, has been created for the brewery.
It does give an address of 600 Frazier Drive, which is the previous location of Cool Springs Brewery which recently closed.
On social media, the brewery is showing photos of burgers stating, “Burger Preview! Let us introduce you to the Smashville Hot Burger, Brewery Burger and our Patty Melt. Full menu coming soon!”
They also showed a photo of the brewing tanks stating, “Almost ready to brew, tanks are polished and shining like new!”
At this time, we don’t have an opening date but they did share on social media on Friday, April 1 that opening details were coming soon.

USA, WY: Frontier Brewing Company applies for microbrewery license for its new location
|
Frontier Brewing Company has applied for a new microbrewery license that it plans to use at its new downtown Casper location inside of the former Fox III Theater, the Oil City News reported on April 5.
The Casper City Council will look to set April 19 as the public hearing date for consideration of the request from Brewstory, LLC (which does business as Frontier Brewing Company) for a new microbrewery license, according to a memo from city staff included in the council’s work packet. The fee for a microbrewery license is $500 and there is not a limit on the number of this type of liquor license that the city can issue.
Saturday, April 1 marked the final day for Frontier at its original 117 E. Second St. location as the brewery prepares to move a block over into the former theater space located at 150 W. Second St.
Frontier general manager Asia Eisenbraun said that phase one for the brewery’s plans at the new location include opening space in what was the lobby and one theater inside the former Fox. USA, CA: Tipping Pint Brewing Co. to debut in North County
|
A new brewery — Tipping Pint Brewing Co. — will debut in North County this weekend, the Pacific San Diego reported on April 1.
Tipping Pint’s taproom and production facility is located inside Hangar 76, a former warehouse turned venue. Helmed by head brewer Adam Jester (previously Pizza Port Solana Beach’s head brewer), Tipping Pint will have a seven-barrel brewhouse and a dozen beers on tap, from a honey wheat to a hazy IPA.
Besides the brewery, Hangar 76 will also house urban winery Carruth Cellars, as well as commercial kitchen for mobile food vendors, office spaces, and a design showroom. Hangar 76 is one of the first local projects to benefit from Assembly Bill No. 1825, allowing a brewery and winery to hold overlapping licenses and produce alcohol on the same premises.
This weekend, Hangar 76 will host a grand opening — happening 3 to 10 p.m. Friday, noon to 10 p.m. Saturday, and noon to 8 p.m. Sunday — with free live music, food trucks, raffles and games.

Australia: Asahi Beverages planning to win back Australian beer consumers
|
Will Asahi Beverages ever stop being a beer company? No, says the CEO of the biggest beer and beverages company in Australia, Robert Iervasi. “Beer is at our core,” he insists, the Wall Street Journal reported on April 6.
But almost everything else that was discussed between him and WSJ’s Patrick Durkin next over a two-hour, steak-and-beer at the Builders Arms in Melbourne’s Fitzroy is how the Japanese beverages giant moves “beyond beer”.
Beer consumption has hit a 55-year low as both the amount of beer and the level of alcohol within it has fallen. The beer Australians consume is drastically shifting – 30 per cent of sales are now low-, mid- and zero-strength beers such as Asahi’s Great Northern brand, which has taken the title of the country’s best-selling beer.
Asahi paid A$16 billion for Carlton & United Beverages in 2020 to bring household beer brands such as VB, Carlton Draught and Crown Lager into the fold.
Asahi also owns international beers such as Asahi, Peroni, Grolsch, Pilsner Urquell and it distributes Corona. It controls about 18 per cent of the craft beer market with its range including Balter, 4 Pines, Pirate Life and Mountain Goat, as well as alcoholic ciders Somersby

Malaysia: Analysts upgrade brewery sector to “Overweight”
|
Hong Leong Investment Bank (HLIB) Research has upgraded the brewery sector to “Overweight” and said many of the consumer stocks have experienced a strong and almost full-blown recovery when the economy gradually reopened since mid-Aug 2021, The Edge Malaysia reported.
In a sector update on April 6, the research house however said the brewers were laggards, given the pandemic restrictions in place that were less favourable to the brewers.
It said with Malaysia’s recent transition into an endemic phase on April 1, the brewers will benefit from the removal of certain restrictions (i.e. resumption of operations for bars and pubs, normalising of operating hours, reopening of international borders, etc.) that are expected to boost alcohol consumption.
“We are also not overly concerned on the recent jump in raw material prices as we think the brewers would be able to pass this on to consumers, due to the relatively inelastic demand of beer.
“The brewers “premiumisation push” coupled with better economies-of-scale (arising from the absence of brewery closure), are expected to support the recovery in margins going forward.
“All in all, we are positive on the brewers, and we upgrade our rating on the brewery sector to Overweight,” it said.

EU: Diageo returns to bonds market for the first time since 2020
|
Diageo Plc is returning to Europe’s market for new bonds for the first time since 2020, Bloomberg reported on April 5.
The maker of Guinness beer and Smirnoff vodka is selling at least 1.6 billion euros ($1.75 billion) of debt in a four-part deal in euros and sterling, according to a person familiar with the matter. It’s the company’s first venture into the public market since September 2020, when it sold a two-part 700 million euros and 400 million pounds deal, according to data compiled by Bloomberg.
Diageo’s offer is a signal of improving market sentiment, as measures of credit risk fall to the lowest in about three weeks. It adds to a resurgence in supply, with borrowers resuming sales after having largely stayed on the sidelines following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
“We are now returning to our usual regular issuance strategy, and we believe that current market conditions are supportive of an appropriate time to access the capital markets,” a Diageo spokesperson said in response to Bloomberg News questions.
The offer follows strong demand seen for industry peer Pernod Ricard SA’s sale last week, which pulled in 3.4 billion euros of orders for 750 million euros of sustainability-linked notes due in seven years.

Myanmar: Myanmar military's beer sales tumble after junta boycott
|
When Japanese brewing giant Kirin called time on its Myanmar operations last month, the news made little difference to Kyaw Gyi - like many drinkers, he had long boycotted the beer it produced with a military conglomerate, AFP reported on April 4.
For years, Myanmar Beer dominated bars and supermarket shelves, its Japanese backing a sign of the economic liberalisation washing into the country after the military relaxed its iron grip on power in 2011.
But after the generals ousted Aung San Suu Kyi's civilian government in February last year, many turned their backs on the brew, along with a host of other goods made by companies linked to the armed forces, from soap to coffee.
"We know other beer brands are paying tax to the military, but we don't want all of our money going to them," said sailor Kyaw Gyi, sitting outside a bar on Yangon's 19th Street, a popular drinking haunt.
"We avoid it. If there is only Myanmar Beer in the restaurant, then we don't drink beer," he said, using a pseudonym.
Farther along the street in Yangon's bustling downtown, restaurant manager Zaw Naing said his establishment hadn't sold the light, five per cent brew since April last year.

The Czech Republic: Czech Beer and Malt Association wants Czech beer culture recognized as world’s Intangible Cultural Heritage
|
Beer is one of the Czech Republic's most famous exports, and it might soon become UNESCO-recognized. The Czech Beer and Malt Association has begun the process of submitting Czech beer culture to UNESCO's list of Intangible Cultural Heritage, its spokesperson František Šámal told reporters on April 1.
According to Šámal, the process may take about four years, meaning Czech beer culture could be added to UNESCO's list in 2026 if the campaign is successful.
The Association is coordinating efforts with the Czech Ministry of Culture. In its application, it refers to Czech beer as a symbol of national pride that increases tourism to the Czech Republic.
Czech beer culture wouldn't be the first to receive UNESCO recognition. Belgian beer culture was added to the list of cultural heritage in 2016.
The Czech Ministry of Culture currently recognizes thirty items in its List of Intangible Assets of Traditional Folk Culture of the Czech Republic. Seven of those items have also achieved status in the UNESCO list of Intangible Cultural Heritage.

Ukraine & UK: Budweiser bringing Ukrainian beer brand to the UK
|
Lager brand Budweiser is bringing a Ukrainian beer brand to the UK with profits being donated to charity, Yahoo News reported on April 4.
The brand Chernigivske is one of the most popular beer’s in Ukraine and will be hitting Britain’s pubs, restaurants and retailers from the end of April with the help of Budweiser, who will donate profits to humanitarian NGOs and hope to raise $5 million (£3.8 million).
On the new launch, Chernigivske’s marketing director, Anna Rudenko, said: “I am proud that we can launch Chernigivske in the UK to support humanitarian relief.
“Chernigivske has been enjoyed by generations of Ukrainians. As a brewer, we can use our daily interactions with consumers to bring this beer to market and enable consumers to support humanitarian relief efforts.”
The brand is named after the city of Chernihiv in northern Ukraine, where the beer was first produced, and now it is mainly made in the cities of Mykolaiv and Kharkiv – which have been hit hard amidst the countries ongoing war with Russia.

Qatar: Qatar to relax alcohol rules ahead of World Cup
|
Ahead of a FIFA World Cup already marred by reports of corruption and human rights abuses, Qatar seeks to boost its image in the West by relaxing its strict laws on alcohol during the event, The Drinks Business reported on April 4.
Thirsty football plans heading to Qatar to watch the World Cup action later this year will be able to buy beer from a select number of beach clubs and kiosks within the stadium grounds, but not in the stands themselves.
Berthold Trenkel, chief operating officer for Qatar Tourism, told The Mirror that fans will “be able to buy beer once they are inside the perimeter of the stadiums” but there will be “zero alcohol” within the stadiums.
Budweiser, owned by AB InBev, is the official beer sponsor for the tournament, which kicks off on 21 November. It is thought that a pint will cost around £6 throughout the duration of the event. The imposition of a “sin” tax, which significantly increases the price of alcoholic drinks outside of stadiums, may also act as a deterrent against binge drinking.
