USA, NC: Gilde Brewery to launch in Charlotte on February 26
|
The long wait is over. Gilde Brewery will be opening in Charlotte’s Lower South End on Saturday, Feb. 26 at 3 p.m., the Charlotte Observer reported.
The brewery’s first U.S. location has been in the works since 2018, but the COVID-19 pandemic and supply chain issues caused multiple delays. It will also serve as Gilde’s U.S. headquarters, overseeing the brewery’s distribution across the country.
“Our opening is as much anticipated for us as it is for the German beer lovers in Charlotte and across the U.S.,” Gilde CEO Karsten Uhlmann said.
The 9,500-square-foot brewery and restaurant showcases German architectural details and design touches, and millwork, while focusing on the brewhouse’s Caspary copper kettles and stainless steel fermenting tanks.
“We’ve created an immersive experience for our guests to give them a true interpretation of German culture, cuisine, and, of course, beer,” Gilde President Mike Gaertner said. “We have been brewing beer since 1546, and we look forward to sharing our heritage and authenticity with Charlotte and the U.S.”
There’s seating for 350 guests to spread out across the bier haus, outdoor bier garten, patio and semi-private event space. Local artisans Tenon & Tailored created custom millwork inside the brewery, while Carla Garrison-Mattos created murals

USA, TN: Star Spangled Brewing Company opens new brewery in downtown Clarksville
|
Star Spangled Brewing Company has opened its new brewery in downtown Clarksville, and owner Josh Romaker was more than excited, the Clarksville Now reported on February 18.
“This one is a unique location just due to the fact of the proximity of downtown and the new convention center,” he said. “When you come into the brewery, you’re going to find that it’s a 1970s camping-themed tap room,” Romaker said.
One of the many highlights of the tap room is a 1977 Airstream used as a bar and serving area. Romaker said he purchased the 31-foot Excella 50 Airstream and cut it down to be used inside the tap room.
Star Spangled cut a ribbon with the Clarksville Area Chamber of Commerce this weekend at the new location, 614 N. Spring St.
They will be open Saturday, Feb. 19, at noon and then on Wednesdays and Thursdays 3-8 p.m., Fridays 3-10 p.m., Saturdays noon-10 p.m., and Sundays noon-7 p.m.

USA, MN: Broken Clock Brewing hoping to be up and running by this fall
|
Broken Clock Brewing is set to be the only Minnesota brewery directly on the Mississippi River, kstp.com reported on February 18.
Production and taproom facilities will be moving one-and-a-half miles south of their current location to 1712 Marshall Street Northeast in Minneapolis.
The move will allow for a tripling of their production capacity, moving from a five-barrel system to a 15-barrel system.
Event coordinator Samantha Colenso said that more parking will be available to patrons as well as access to several other local businesses including Psycho Suzie’s and Fletcher’s Ice cream.
Broken Clock hopes to be up and running in its new location by this fall.

USA, MA: Lamplighter CX brewry opens its doors in Cambridge, Massachusetts
|
The rapidly evolving Cambridge Crossing (CX) neighborhood is celebrating the opening of Lamplighter CX, a brewery and taproom, the newest addition to its vibrant ecosystem of restaurants, retail, and public spaces, Brewbound reported on February 22.
Located at 110 North First Street in the heart of the neighborhood, the brewery joins a collection of locally curated retailers now open at CX. Lamplighter CX will be the brewery’s second location in East Cambridge and will be an urban destination brewery that not only offers Lamplighter the opportunity to increase production and taproom services, but to create an inclusive community space that provides friends, both old and new, to experience the local Cambridge flavor in a vibrant new place.
“Lamplighter is all about creating unique beers and great experiences; in looking for our second location, we wanted to be in a community that shares our creative spirit,” said Cayla Marvil, co-founder. “Being a part of Cambridge Crossing and its mix of local restaurant concepts, innovative companies, and abundance of outdoor spaces makes for a great setting. We’re really excited for our customers to experience this new taproom space among a dynamic new neighborhood.”
Lamplighter CX has over 6,000 square feet of taproom and

USA, VT: Collaborative Brewing to close down on February 22
|
Brett Seymour walked into a meeting late last month with his partners at Collaborative Brewing and was floored immediately by what they had to tell them: They needed to close the brewery, the Burlington Free Press reported on February 19.
“This just isn’t really working,” Seymour, the brewer for the Waitsfield beermaker, said he was told by one of the partners, accountant Craig Isvak. They held a vote and, according to Seymour, Isvak and the third partner, Steve Parker, voted to shut the brewery down.
“I didn’t even bother casting a vote,” Seymour said on Monday, 14 afternoon at Collaborative Brewing’s taproom, which will close Feb. 22. “I was pretty shocked. I hadn’t digested it yet.”
Brewery openings have been extremely common in the past decade as Vermont’s reputation as a beer-intensive state has grown nationally and internationally. A state with just over 20 breweries in 2011 has seen that tally skyrocket past 60.
A brewery closing, however, is exceedingly rare in Vermont. Then again, so is a pandemic like COVID-19, which hit about a year after Collaborative Brewing started making beer and four months after the brewery opened its taproom in the Mad River Green plaza off Vermont 100.
It takes a good five

USA, PA: Manayunk Brewing Company to shut down brewing operations
|
Based on a report from Philly Voice, Manayunk Brewing Company will officially be calling it quits on the brewing side of their business. According to the report, the decision to shut down brewing operations is a direct result of Hurricane Ida which hit Philadelphia in the Fall of 2021.
Manayunk Brewing, which is no stranger to floods, sustained a large amount of damage during this most recent hurricane. The Philadelphia Business Journal reported that brewery owner Mike Rose estimated the damage to the brewing equipment alone to be around $500,000.
The financial burden to the brewing side of the business proved too much to overcome, and Manayunk Brewing has made the official decision to cease all brewing operations immediately.
In Philadelphia, Manayunk Brewing is one of the longest standing breweries to date. Opening in 1996 they are just one of a handful of Philadelphia area breweries with an almost 30 year history. At one point Manayunk Brewing was widely known for producing over 600 different beers all across the Philadelphia beer landscape, many which could be found in cans in almost every bottle shop in both the city and suburbs.
As of this writing, the change in operations has already taken place. The current

Japan & Myanmar: Kirin says Myanmar brewery partner filed new liquidation petition
|
Japanese beverage company Kirin Holdings said on Monday, February 21 that its military-linked partner in a Myanmar brewery has filed a new petition to liquidate the joint venture.
Kirin has been in a dispute with local partner Myanma Economic Holdings Public Company Limited (MEHPCL) on how to dissolve their brewery venture following a military coup that ousted the democratically elected government last year.
Kirin said in a statement it just became aware that MEHPCL filed a petition on Jan 27 to a Yangon court seeking to liquidate the venture, a day after the same court dismissed a similar petition.
The Japanese brewery said it would respond to the new petition accordingly.
Kirin said last week it intended to sell its stakes in two businesses in Myanmar and withdraw from the country.

UK: Diageo to carry out £1.7 bln share buyback
|
Diageo PLC said it is to carry out a share buyback worth £1.7 bln as the third part of a previously announced capital returns programme, ProActiveInvestors.co.uk reported on February 21.
The Johnnie Walker, Smirnoff and Guinness maker had already bought back shares totalling £2.25 bln on 31 January 2020 and 11 February 2022 as part of the £4.5 bln exercise, which is scheduled to finish by the end of its financial year to June 2023.
UBS will carry out the latest buyback with £1.4 bln of the shares to be acquired by June and the whole amount by 5 October 2022.

Thailand: Major manufacturers to raise liquor and beer prices
|
Thailand’s major manufacturers and distributors of liquor and beer have notified trade partners that they will raise prices of selected products from next week, said an informed source on February 22, The Nation reports.
From next month, the price of rice whisky will rise by Bt120 per case of small bottles – from Bt1,242 to Bt1,362 – and by Bt54 per case of large bottles, from Bt1,158 to Bt1,212, said the source. “The price of beer will also go up by Bt2-4 per can, or Bt48 per case of large bottles [from Bt805 to Bt853],” the source added.
However, the Excise Department said on February 22 that no manufacturers have notified the department of prices rises. The law requires that manufacturers give notice if they intend to raise the price by more than five per cent of the level suggested by the department.
The department insisted that the government had no policy to increase tax on alcoholic beverages, so any price hike must be due to other reasons.
Krungthep Turakij newspaper on February 22 surveyed alcohol retailers in Chiang Mai’s Saraphi district and found that though prices were still the same, most shops anticipate rises after March 1.
“Small retailers will be severely affected as

South Korea: Soju prices to rise, beer may follow suit
|
HiteJinro announced it will raise soju prices by 7.9 percent, and other alcohol makers are expected to follow as the price of ethanol goes up, The Korea JoongAng Daily reported on February 20.
The factory price of HiteJinro’s Chamisul Original and Chamisul Fresh will rise an average 7.9 percent to 1,166 won (98 cents) for a 360 mililiter (12 fluid ounce) bottle starting Feb. 23.
The price of Jinro Soju will also rise 7.9 percent. The company didn't state the factory price after the rise, but said it will be lower than for Chamisul.
It is the first price hike for Jinro Soju since its release in 2019. For the two Chamisuls, it is the first rise in two years and nine months.
HiteJinro blamed a rise in raw materials and logistics costs for the increase, and said that production costs rose more than 14 percent over the past three years.
The Korea Ethanol Supplies Company raised prices of ethanol, a key ingredient in soju, for the first time since 2012. A 200-liter drum of ethanol now costs 391,527 won, up 7.8 percent from 351,203 won.
