Brewery news USA, IN: Afterburner Brewing Company opens its doors in Terre Haute
Afterburner Brewing Company opened its doors in Terre Haute on Wednesday, February 2, WIBQ reported.

Co-Dustin Strole said it’s been a two year process to get the brewery open. He said that there were many hurdles along the way but he’s excited to open the facility.

He said that he’s thankful for neighboring brewing companies for their support during the process.

“We’ve got really good neighbors around us that have helped keep an eye on things over the last two years while this was a construction zone,” Strole said.

Afterburner Brewing Company is located at 629 South 9th Street in Terre Haute.

Brewery news USA, CA: Brew-N-Krew Ale House close to launching in Salinas
Crumbly marzipan, sweet-savory mango with chile, cinnamon toast crunch, pulparindo candy, habaneros aren't typical flavors you find at a brewery, TheCalifornian.com reported on February 4.

Former Salinas educator Marlene Garcia, 31, owner of Brew-N-Krew Ale House, is turning these childhood flavors into her unique beer recipes.

Garcia said she wants to create a place where people can come and try flavors that connect them back to their childhood. After investing thousands of dollars in opening up her brewery, she is close to achieving her dream — in her hometown of Salinas.

"When we talk about our beer, so many people can relate to the flavors we offer," Garcia said. "A lot of them grew up the same way we did, with the same styles of flavors and everything that you see in our beer, whether it's a beer name, the beer label, the colors, the flavors, the way we present it, all of that is significant to us, and everything has a story behind it."

Garcia's parents, Graciela and Gildardo, worked in the fields after immigrating to the U.S. from Guanajuato, Mexico. Garcia said they would go to Los Angeles every month or so, five hours away, to stock up on ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, NJ: Whims Brewing expected to open in Waterford later this year
A new brewery is expected to fill a familiar beer space in Atco, Waterford later this year, the Courier-Post reported on February 5.

Dorien Saunders is hard at work to bring Whims Brewing to the White Horse Pike site vacated by Atco Brewing Company, which closed at the end of 2021.

Saunders, 32, is a Bensalem, Pennsylvania, native and respected homebrewer who now calls South Jersey, specifically Atco, home.

He has homebrewed for about seven years and collaborated with the likes of Icarus Brewing Company in Lakewood and Hammonton's Three 3's Brewing Company.

Experimenting with barrel-aged beers and fermentation processes will be the mission at Whims.

"The focus for Whims Brewing involves the creation of beers utilizing expressive yeast strains and bacteria, exploring different malt varieties, and the use of wood during fermentation and aging," Saunders says on the brewery's website.

He adds a passion for using fruits, herbs and flowers in his beers as well.

In recent years, Saunders has attracted the attention of local brewers and craft beer lovers through his participation in homebrewing contests.

The name Whims Brewing comes from self-reflection by Saunders.

"I'm a pretty reserved guy and spend a lot of time thinking/researching whatever may interest me," Saunders said. "Being ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, VA: Businesses teaming up to open brewery, restaurant in downtown Fredericksburg
Owners of two breweries and the owner of a restaurant were looking for a place to merge their Northern Virginia businesses when curiosity drew them to downtown Fredericksburg, fredericksburg.com reported on February 6.

Zack Mote and Ryan Sharkey, co-owners of Water’s End breweries, and Mike Sarago, who owns Hot Chikn Kitchn, didn’t have Fredericksburg Square on their list of prospective sites, but couldn’t resist taking a peek when they saw that the historic, three-story brick building at 525 Caroline St. was for sale.

“We were intrigued. It was 19,000 square feet and so we decided to stop and be nosy,” said Sarago. “We walked in and we were like, what an awesome, fabulous place this is! Our minds ran wild with what we could do here.”

“We absolutely fell in love with it,” added Mote, who is president of Water’s End.

He and Sarago began negotiations to purchase the property in 2019, but had to push pause due to the pandemic and the passing of Van Perroy, who’d owned and operated the building with his wife Deborah for nearly 25 years. The deal was finalized last December and the partners hope to open there this spring.

“The focus is not going to be just the ...More info on site

Barley news Australia: December malting barley exports down 68% from November’s total
Australia exported 19,199 tonnes of malting barley, 942,725 tonnes of feed barley and 78,574 tonnes of sorghum in December 2021, according to the latest data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS), the Grain Central reports.

The malting figure was down 68 per cent from the November total of 60,431 tonnes to reflect the rundown on old-crop stocks, while the feed figure surged 58pc from the November total to reflect new-crop availability primarily out of Western Australia and South Australia.

Sorghum exports in December fell 32pc from the November total of 116,400t, again due to a rundown in stocks ahead of the harvest which has gotten under way in recent weeks.

Flexi Grain pool manager Sam Roache said December barley exports marked a return to the big numbers seen early in the 2020-21 (Oct-Sep) marketing year.

“It was the largest export month since March 2021, and it was posted in December rather than November because of the softer finish and delayed harvest.”

The jump in feed barley exports more than compensated for the drop in malting month on month.

The reduced malting tonnage was reflecting uncertainty around barley quality after the rain-affected harvest in eastern Australia as well as dwindling old-crop stocks.

“This is not a flag ...More info on site

Barley news Ukraine: Barley exports total 5.5 mln tonnes in the 2021/22 July-June season
Ukraine has exported 39.2 million tonnes of grain so far in the 2021/22 July-June season, up 32.8% from the same stage a season earlier, agriculture ministry data showed on February 7.

The total volume included 17.2 million tonnes of wheat, 5.5 million tonnes of barley and 16.1 million tonnes of corn, the data showed.

Agriculture ministry has said Ukraine harvested a record 84 million tonnes of grain in clean weight in 2021 versus 65 million a year earlier.

The ministry has forecast that the 2021/22 exports could include 25.3 million tonnes of wheat, 33.8 million of corn and 5.5 million of barley.

Ukraine's exports last season included 23.1 million tonnes of corn, 16.6 million of wheat and 4.2 million of barley.

Brewery news UK & Thailand: Shepherd Neame to brew Thai lager Singha for the UK market
Shepherd Neame is to brew Thai lager Singha for the UK market, Kent Online reported on February 7.

It expands on a distribution agreement it has had with the Boon Rawd Brewery Company since 2019.

Now the Faversham firm will also brew the popular tipple in 330ml and 630ml bottles and kegs. Singha 330ml cans will continue to be imported.

Sheps will distribute the UK-brewed Singha to selected pubs in its 310-strong estate across London and the South East, and to on and off-trade customers nationwide. It will continue to manage Singha’s UK marketing strategy, sales, distribution and promotion.

Shepherd Neame chief executive Jonathan Neame said: “We’re delighted to build on our successful partnership with Boon Rawd Brewery, drawing upon our well-established brewing credentials to produce Singha and continue working to raise its profile as an exceptional world lager throughout the UK.”

Boon Rawd chief executive, Khun Bhurit Birombakdi, added: “We are extremely happy to further strengthen our successful relationship with Shepherd Neame with this local brewing agreement. We both share the same family values and commitment to quality, and look forward to working together to continue serving our British consumers.”

Singha has been served in the UK since 1974. The Boon Rawd Brewery is Thailand's ...More info on site

Brewery news Australia: Lion hires former Diageo executive as CEO
Beer group Lion, which makes brands including Tooheys, XXXX Gold and West End, has hired Diageo executive Sam Fischer to become its new chief executive as the company tries to reinvigorate a declining mainstream beer market and faces a hospitality sector battered by the pandemic, AFR reported on February 8.

He will take over from Stuart Irvine, who signalled he was departing in May last year but will stay in the job until July.

Mr Fischer is currently president of Asia Pacific and global travel with the global spirits company Diageo and part of its global executive committee. He is also a non-executive director with luxury goods and fashion company Burberry Group.

He has an uphill battle as Lion tries to turn around falling mainstream beer sales, and grapples with the continued difficulties of its hospitality venue customers in the pandemic where shutdowns and capacity restrictions have crippled many businesses.

The company is pinning much of its hopes on expansion in the faster-growing craft beer segment. Lion in November made its second large acquisition in craft beer in the United States in three years, with the buyout of Michigan-based Bell’s Brewery from owner Larry Bell, who built up a business which now employs 550 ...More info on site

Brewery news UK: Krombacher launches its Pils variant in the UK
German beer brand Krombacher has launched its Pils variant in the UK in a new 330ml can (4.8% ABV), KamCity reported on February 9.

Stephan Kofler, Krombacher’s Director for Sales & Marketing in the UK & Ireland, said: “Our Pils has become a mainstay in quality On-trade establishments and leading retailers so with the ever-growing trend for cans, it was only right that we rolled out this new SKU.

“The desire for our authentic, natural, full-flavoured beers from retailers, pubs, restaurants, hotels and most of all consumers is continuing to grow and we are confident that this thirst for quality and real German provenance will only increase further as 2022 heats up.”

The new Krombacher 330ml can is available through Manchester-based importer and distributor Morgenrot in cases of 24 with a list price of £27.18.
