Brewery news USA, WA: Common Language Brewing Co. getting ready to open in Spokane
A space that was once home to the Spokane Daily Chronicle’s newspaper presses will soon gain new life as a brewery, The Spokesman-Review reported on August 17.

Sean Owens – a former veterinarian and retired professor from the University of California, Davis School of Veterinary Medicine – and five business partners have leased a 3,500-square-foot, first-floor space at 926 W. Sprague Ave. in downtown Spokane.

Renovations are underway to convert the space formerly occupied by River Rock Taphouse into Common Language Brewing Co.

Owens aims to make Common Language Brewing Co. a welcoming and inclusive place that supports career advancement of women, people of color and the LGBTQIA community in the craft beer industry.

“Obviously, we want to make great beer, but also be an agent for change and diversity in the profession,” Owens said. “We also want to be a research place for students to train how to make beer.”

The brewery plans to donate a significant portion of sale proceeds to organizations that support women, children and BIPOC – Black, Indigenous and people of color – communities, he added.

Common Language Brewing ‘s co-founders include Jeremy Johnson, chief financial officer; Chris Durrant, chief technology engineer; Alex Lowrie, chief educational officer; Dallas Hobbs, director of ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, OH: Earnest Brew Works to open new taproom and small-batch facility in downtown Toledo
South Toledo's Earnest Brew Works said on August 16 it will open its new downtown taproom and small-batch facility next week, and is on track to unveil a larger production facility and taproom off Byrne Road next year, the Toledo Blade reported.

The downtown location, at 25 S. St. Clair — formerly home of Seed Coworking — will host its grand opening from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Aug. 25. To celebrate, Toledo Mayor Wade Kapszukiewicz will tap a large cask of beer, known as Kilderkin, the brewery said in an announcement.

Earnest said the new spot is modeled after the original, at 4342 S. Detroit Ave., including the casual atmosphere and allowing carry-in food. Hours will be 4-10 p.m. Thursdays, 2-11 p.m. Fridays, and noon to 11 p.m. Saturdays, plus opening whenever the Mud Hens and Walleye play home games.

The downtown location, under construction since February, will brew small-batch experimental and limited-release beers while also serving its normal lineup of brews. To-go DORA cups and six-packs will be available.

Earnest, founded in 2016, also said Monday it has begun renovating a former Kroger, at 1415 Byrne Rd., with the goal of turning it into a 20-barrel production facility and taproom sometime ...More info on site

Whisky news Canada: Distillers pushing for changes to ‘crushingly high’ federal tax on liquor
Some of the most famous names in Canadian liquor have teamed up with craft distillers to push for a cut to what they call “crushingly high” federal taxes on spirits that put the industry at a disadvantage compared to rivals in other countries, the Regina Leader-Post reported on August 17.

The spirits industry has for years complained of an unfair tax burden, but this newly formed coalition of small and large players is hoping to turn the plight of craft distilleries into a federal election issue.

They argue that the federal excise tax on spirits — about C$4 per standard bottle — is “tone deaf” and holds back the fledgling micro-distillery industry from the sort of explosive growth that micro-brewers have enjoyed for years.

“We’re having a hard time competing when we’re paying such an exorbitant amount of tax,” said Tyler Dyck, chief executive at Kelowna, B.C.-based Okanagan Spirits Craft Distillery, who is leading the Lift Canada’s Spirits coalition. “Obviously, we want to get this in front of all the federal leaders.”

A reduction in tax revenues could be a tough sell during an election cycle that is expected to focus on unprecedented levels of government spending on pandemic support and recovery.

The coalition, however, ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, WI: Wizard Works Brewing Company already open in Milwaukee
Wizard Works Brewing Company in Milwaukee is a new brewery owned by Chris Ragaisis, WTMJ-TV reported on August 17.

"Well I've been wanting to do this since my 20s. My very first brew company that I went to was a brew pub in the 80s in Denver. It was such an amazing experience. So, I wanted to do this too," said Ragaisis.

Ragaisis started his career brewing at home. He has his own style that is unique at his brewery.

"You come on down the stairs into the basement, and we brew everything on a seven-barrel system. I focus on traditional beers, and I brew to style, so our Pilsner is a true hoppy, and the Indian Pale Ale is a real English IPA. We want to make things that are classic beers," said Ragaisis.

Brewery news South Korea: Beer sales at Korea’s convenience stores changed by rise of local craft beer and boycott of Japanese products
The boycott of Japanese products, which began in South Korea in July 2019 with the Japanese government's export control, changed the sales of convenience stores' canned beer, the New Kerala reported on August 17.

Even now, two years after the boycott, the convenience store industry continues to see a decline in sales of Japanese beer, so orders are almost cut off.

Some industry believe that it is not because of the boycott, but because Korean domestic craft beer products, which are mostly targeting young people, have gained popularity.

According to South Korean chain of convenience stores GS25, sales of Japanese beer decreased by 90.2% year-on-year in the first half of 2020, whereas the first six months of this year saw a 91.2% drop versus the same period last year.

Convenience store chain CU's sales of Japanese beer declined 1.3% year-on-year in the first half of 2019, before the boycott, but in the second half of 2019, sales dropped every month: -88.5% in August 2019, -92.2% in September, -91.7% in October, -93.1% in November, and -93.8% in December 2019.

In the first half of 2020, it was -96.1% year-on-year and continued to decline with -13.1% in the first half of this year. However, overall sales of ...More info on site

Brewery news Croatia: Garden Brewery launches Croatia’s first zero-alcohol craft beer
Zagreb-based Garden Brewery has presented Croatia’s first zero-alcohol craft beer, the Croatia Week reported on August 17.

The Garden Brewery’s Double Dry Hopped IPA was created in partnership with alcohol-free craft beer pioneers Coast Beer Co from Scotland.

“Unlike many alcohol-free beers, Double Dry Hopped IPA features huge amounts of classic hops (Citra, Simcoe and Mosaic) for the perfect balance of flavour and drinkability; with the juicy flavour and aroma we love so much,” The Garden Brewery said.

“It’s hazy, hoppy and refreshing – and at 0.0% ABV, endlessly sessionable.”

Late last year, The Garden Brewery was named the best brewery in the EU for the second year in a row by beer club Beer52.

Since opening around five years ago, The Garden Brewery has been spreading the story of Croatian craft brewing all over the world, recently adding China to the list of countries to which it exports.

In addition to exporting to the UK, France, Germany, Denmark, Belgium, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Spain, Portugal, Luxembourg, Australia New Zealand, Estonia, Macedonia, and Bulgaria, they are present in Malaysia, Ireland, Singapore, Thailand, Japan, Malta, Greece, and the United Arab Emirates.

The new non-alcoholic Double Dry Hopped IPA is available on the brewery’s webshop.
