While many drinkers may celebrate the easing of pandemic restrictions with a beer or glass of wine, the world's biggest brewers will be urging them to try new zero alcohol lagers, Reuters reported on July 20.
Having lost market share to craft beers and hard seltzers - or alcoholic fizzy water - top brewers like AB InBev and Heineken are betting on a new generation of non-alcoholic beers to help regain ground by tapping into healthy-living trends.
But the pandemic cancelled business lunches, emptied sports facilities and left no one driving back from parties or bars - all prime territories for sales of zero alcohol drinks.
Global non-alcohol beer sales fell 4.6% in 2020 in value terms to $11.6 billion after 9% average annual growth in the previous four years, according to market research provider Euromonitor International.
The ending of restrictions in the United States and Europe is now making it easier for brewers to get drinkers to try out new zero alcohol versions of their top-selling brands - something they believe will be crucial to ramping up sales.

Germany: Craft beer popularity increasing as consumers become more experimental
|
Germany’s traditional beer industry is being ‘threatened’ by craft beer as consumers are becoming more experimental with products, claimed GlobalData, a data and analytics company.
“Since 1516, German breweries have maintained focus on the German Purity Law; however, this is set to change with the entrance of the craft beer segment,” said Holly Inglis, Beverages Analyst at GlobalData. She furthered commented on how COVID-19 restrictions affected the hospitality and trade industry, with a reduction in tourism and on-premise closures hindering consumption opportunities.
According to GlobalData, from 2015-2020 Germany’s beer market recorded a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) loss of 1.3 percent, in line with consumers who are both monitoring and reducing their intake of alcoholic beverages.
Germany’s craft market growth has been slow, as research suggests consumers opt for class German beer. Inglis described the craft market as “unique” and “trendy”, and claimed that, “craft beer types have started to gain a stronger presence since 2019, with larger breweries such as Riedenburger and Glaabsbrau innovating in craft production lines, as well as developments from more niche breweries like Brlo.”

Serbia: Bankrupt Belgrade Brewing Industry put up for sale
|
The bankrupt Belgrade Brewing Industry (BIP), whose value is estimated at 4.17 billion dinars, has been put up for sale followed by a public collection of bids, the Agency for Licensing of Bankruptcy Administrators announced on July 19.
The most important assets of BIP in Belgrade include the production complex on Vojvode Radomira Putnika Street in Belgrade, of a total surface area of more than 26,000 square metres, and the juice factory on Zrenjaninski put, which spans over 11,000, reports the Tanjug news agency.
Apart from BIP, in the same package, the Čačak beer and malt factory, commercial facilities in Obrenovac, Kosovska Mitrovica, Alibunar, a shopping centre in Kragujevac and a flat in Budva are also offered for sale.
BIP also sells 12 brands registered in Serbia, including Bg light and dark beer and Russian yeast, as well as three international brands. Also listed as important assets are disputed rights to vinegar products, as well as equipment in production facilities in Belgrade and Čačak.
The deadline for submitting offers for the purchase of BIP is 16 August. Once one of the biggest beer producers in the country, Belgrade Brewing industry has been bankrupt since 2016.

Malaysia: Carlsberg and Heineken among top gainers on Bursa Malaysia
|
Carlsberg Brewery Malaysia Bhd and Heineken Malaysia Bhd emerged among the top gainers on Bursa Malaysia in the morning session on July 19 as investors bet on their resurgent recovery, The Edge Markets reported.
Carlsberg opened at RM21.20, reaching an intraday high of RM21.66 before settling at RM21.60, making it the second top gainer on Bursa at the 12.30pm break. At RM21.60, the group was valued at RM6.6 billion.
Heineken also rose 22 sen or 1.01% in the morning on July 19 to settle at RM22, with a market value of RM6.65 billion. Heineken — the fifth top gainer on July 19 — saw a trading volume of 85,900 shares.
In a July 7 note, UOB Kay Hian said that Carlsberg’s distribution trade channels were sufficiently stocked despite the suspension of operations running into the sixth week then.
“But should operations continue to be suspended beyond July, we estimate a 4% impact on 2021 earnings for every week it (the suspension) is being extended. However, we think investors would be forward-looking as Carlsberg remains poised for a resurgent recovery,” it added.
The research house maintained its "buy" call on Carlsberg, with a target price (TP) of RM25.

France: France reports worsened condition of soft wheat crop, winter barley harvested from 44% of the area
|
The condition of French soft wheat declined in the week to July 12 while farmers made little progress in harvesting during unusually wet weather, data from farm office FranceAgriMer showed on July 16.
Some 76% of soft wheat was in good or excellent condition against 79% a week earlier, it said in a cereal crop report. That remained well above a score of 55% a year ago when France was harvesting one of its smallest wheat crops in decades.
France, the European Union’s largest grain grower, is widely expected to see a rebound in wheat production. The farm ministry this week forecast a 27% jump in soft wheat output compared with the 2020 crop, 11% above the average of the past five years.
However, heavy rain so far this summer has raised concern about late losses to yields and particularly a deterioration of grain quality that determines wheat’s suitability for milling.
FranceAgriMer’s crop ratings give an assessment of yield potential and not grain quality, which is hard to assess until crop is harvested.

Australia: East Coast barley prices under pressure as farmer selling picks up
|
East Coast barley prices came under pressure as farmer selling picked up into a market as buyers eye-off another thumping harvest, the Queensland Country Life reported on July 19.
An abundance of natural pastures and the absence of export buying from China have significantly eroded demand for Australian barley in recent years.
Two years of drought through 2018 and 2019 forced farmers to feed barley to keep livestock alive. In many cases farmers were forced to buy in supplies at a crippling cost. This was reversed in 2020 as record high barley yields filled on-farm storages to the brim, offering an abundance of supplies for the domestic feeders.
The situation was further complicated in the south. An absence of export demand from China left Victorian farmers looking for new overseas buyers to absorb excess supplies from last year's bumper crop.
Southern Queensland barley bids slipped as farmer selling in NSW picked up to make room for another massive harvest. Old crop barley prices fell A$5 to A$295 delivered into the Daring Downs last week. New crop barley prices into the Downs were steady at A$270 a tonne.

Ukraine: Barley export reaches 207,000 tonnes so far this season
|
Ukraine's grain export has reached 1 million tonnes so far the new 2021/22 July-June season, 108,000 tonnes less than a year earlier, agriculture ministry data showed on July 19.
That included 292,000 tonnes of wheat, 207,000 tonnes of barley and 498,000 tonnes of corn, the data showed.
Ukraine, which has already started the 2021 grain harvest, plans to thresh around 76 million tonnes of grain in 2021 compared to 65 million tonnes in 2020.
The government has said grain exports could rise to 56 million tonnes in the 2021/22 season including 20.7 million tonnes of wheat, 30.7 million tonnes of corn and 4.1 million tonnes of barley.
Exports totalled 44.6 million tonnes in 2020/21.

UK: Owners of The Scotch Malt Whisky Society reports 28% increase in online sales
|
The Artisanal Spirits Company, the owner of The Scotch Malt Whisky Society, has enjoyed a 28 per cent lift to online sales in the UK despite minor membership growth, City A.M. reported on July 19.
Despite last year’s lockdown spurring on drinking habits, the spirits company pulled in £1.7 mln in the six months to 30 June, in comparison to £1.3 mln during the UK’s first lockdown.
Executive managing director, David Ridley, said: “While Brexit continues to present logistical challenges for exports to the EU, we are working through these issues.
“We welcome the long-term suspension of US tariffs which took effect last month, not only does this provide an economic benefit to the business but also enables us to progress our strategic objectives in the USA with confidence.”
Demand from European members remains robust, the company said, despite the “ongoing challenges Brexit continues to pose to EU exports”.
International sales grew 24 per cent, pulling in just over £1 mln more than in the same period in 2020 from its global members, buoyed by the suspension of US tariffs on imports of Scotch whisky this year.
