Brewery news USA, TX: Meanwhile Brewing Co. to open its doors to the public on October 16
Amid a landscape dotted with business closures spurred by corrosive effects of the coronavirus, one enterprise is poised to open this week: Meanwhile Brewing Co. will open its doors to the public on an expansive piece of South Austin on October 16, Patch.com reported.

Located on 3.7 acres of land containing a brewery, taproom and grounds at 3901 Promontory Point Dr. in the southeast portion of the city, Brewing Co. is envisioned as a hub for "...creating community through the bonds of specialty beer, good food, and entertainment," its operators wrote in an advisory.

Meanwhile Brewing is the passion project of Will Jaquiss, formerly of renowned and award-winning Breakside Brewing of Portland, Oregon. He brings Nao Ohdera with him from Breakside, where they were known for their very easy drinking IPAs among other award-winning brews.

The opening beer list has something for all palates, from hoppy, to easy, to classic.

Brewery news USA, MN: Lake Superior Brewing Co. coming back to Duluth
Lake Superior Brewing Co. is coming back to Duluth with new owners, a new vision, and a new location in the Lakeside neighborhood, FOX 21 Online reported on October 13.

“It’s one of the oldest breweries in Minnesota we’re hoping to preserve the legacy of everything that it’s been but kind of reinvent it,” says new co-owner Sarah Maxim.

The brewing company has sat idle since December 2019 and the new owners are changing the business model and moving away from Lincoln Park.

Sarah and Seth Maxim have a combined 30 years of work in the hospitality, restaurant, and brewing business and say they are ready for this new venture.

“We’re up for the challenge we’ve got a lot of work ahead of us but we are up for the challenge,” says Sarah.

The Maxims are a husband and wife duo who both grew up in the Lakeside neighborhood of Duluth.

Lakeside was famously dry for decades until the city council changed that and a couple of liquor stores opened up in recent years.

The new brewery is planned for the former Xcel Xercise and Sun City Tanning center on the 5300 block of East Superior Street.

The couple hopes to give the neighborhood a place people can ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, AZ: Tombstone Brewing Company launching a Phoenix location on October 16
Tombstone Brewing Company, a destination beer lovers drive from around the state to find, is opening a Phoenix location on October 16, AZCEntral.com reported on October 14.

The company will take over the space that's been home to Phoenix's Helio Basin Brewing Co. and will call the new brew pub Tombstone North.

The brewing equipment at Tombstone North is more extensive than what the brewery has in southern Arizona and will allow brewers to create styles of beer that were previously impossible including Saisons and hefeweizens.

Founder and co-owner Matt Brown and brewer Weedy Weidenthal started Tombstone Brewing Company in a historic building in Tombstone.

Tombstone's owners have another location in the works in Sierra Vista, but as it's a completely new-build still, it will be months before any beer can be made there.

Brewery news USA, CT: SoNo Brewing Company launches its first beer
A new brewery is joining the scene in Fairfield County, Thehour.com reported on October 14.

SoNo Brewing Company has launched its first beer and announced plans for a taproom in 2021, according to a press release.

"We set out to share with the town and the neighboring communities all that is great about SoNo," said Don Trooien, co-founder of SoNo Brewing Company, in the press release. "We see no better way to honor this community than to put a small, simple tribute in the hand of each our customers as they enjoy a cold, carefully crafted local beer."

Trooien and fellow co-founder John Buckman have lined up a whole series of brews that are inspired by "Oyster Town." Upcoming beers include the Switch Tower pale ale and the Flax Hill Porter. The first beer in the series, Water Street Double IPA, is a New England-style DIPA with "a symbiotic collaboration of Citra and Galaxy hops."

According to the press release, the duo are also aiming to expand their product selection to include spiked seltzers and whiskey made with beer.

“It’s a crowded market with a lot of competition, but we believe we have a brand that local people will get behind – and a product that ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, MA: 1 Way Brewing hopes to open in Longmeadow by the end of the year
1 Way Brewing is set to open in Longmeadow on 807 Maple Road, the Reminder Publications reported on October 14.

Owners Jason Tsitso and Zach Schwartz were approved by the Longmeadow Zoning Board of Appeals and are now approved for brewing beer in the town of Longmeadow.

“Our goal is to give the community a place to come and enjoy fresh local beer that we make,” Tsitso said. “Being residents of Longmeadow, we saw this as a gap in what the town has. There wasn’t a place where you could go for breweries and have fresh beer made right there. We thought this was a good opportunity for us to come and brew beer in a town we live in.”

1 Way Brewing has a few signature styles. Their most popular beer is their Spilled Milk Mango, a mango milkshake IPA. They also brew a New England IPA and a beer called Breakfast at the Kitchen, a chocolate coffee milk stout.

Tsitso and Schwartz met 22 years ago at the Log Cabin in Holyoke where Schwartz was the waiter for Tsitso and his wife’s wedding party. When Tsitso and his family moved to Longmeadow in 2013, his daughter made a new friend. That ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, WI: Gathering Place Brewing Co. to open a second brewery in Milwaukee
Gathering Place Brewing Co. will open a second brewery and taproom inside the Flour & Feed food hall and marketplace, 2160 S. Kinnickinnic Ave., Milwaukee. The food hall, expected to open in 2021, is being developed by New Land Enterprises, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported on October 16.

Joe Yeado, who founded Gathering Place at 811 E. Vienna Ave., said the Flour & Feed location will function as a satellite taproom with a one-barrel brewing system.

“Our pilot brewery and taproom within the Flour & Feed Marketplace is a unique concept among food halls nationwide," Yeado said. "The brewing system will allow us to experiment with new recipes while the taproom provides the chance to share beers made on site and from our Riverwest brewery."

It also lets him promote his own neighborhood as a beer destination. Enlightened, Component Brewing, 1840 and Beer Barons Cooperative all have breweries in the Bay View neighborhood. Another, Super Moon Brewing, is in the works.

“As a Bay View resident, I want the neighborhood to be known as much for its beer as its outstanding restaurants and bars,” said Yeado. “There is excellent beer being made in the neighborhood and we believe our European-inspired, session-able ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, TX: Urban Jungle Brewery looks to switch up Austin’s craft beer industry a little bit
Shannon Harris aka 'The Brew Brotha' is a man on a mission, CBS Austin reported on October 15.

"I'm looking to switch up the industry a little bit," said Harris.

'The Brew Brotha' wants to diversify the craft beer world starting in Austin.

"I really kind of built a name for myself in the beer industry," said Harris.

After years of learning and observing the trade, Harris is ready to pour out his own brew with Urban Jungle Brewery.

"I wanted to travel the world and brew beer. So I brewed all over the place," said Harris.

Harris says his brewery would also be a tap room, garden, and bakery. He's working with his wife Tiana to make it happen. She's got farming experience.

“It’s for sure a team effort,” says Harris. "She'd be making a mark herself... there's not many women in the brewing world."

According the Brewers Association, out of the over 8,000 breweries in the U.S. less than 1% are owned by Black people.

Of the over 340 breweries in Texas, only one is operated by a Black owner, there's none in Austin.

"When you walk into a brewery. What do you see? Not a lot of diversity right?" explained Harris. " Let's start the conversation and ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, CA: Temecula Brewing Co. ready to open its taps
While businesses began moving into Vail Headquarters – the restored living historic park and retail center on Temecula Parkway in Temecula – several years ago, there came word that Temecula Brewing Co. was moving in, and area craft beer fans rejoiced, the Valley News reported on October 15.

The craft brew company created a social media account and the audience grew in anticipation. They attended some beer events and provided tastings and, again, anticipation grew.

After two years of trials and tribulations, the craft brewery plans to open its doors with a soft opening.

“Finding the location, getting cool with the (Temecula Valley) Historical Society, getting approvals to even be here, to produce beer on this side of town,” Head brewer Joshua Lee Chambers said. “All that was just kind of like a long road, not to mention COVID-19 and every other thing that could possibly get in our way did.

“We have a lot of people (that have been) just waiting until we can get this done,” he said.

Located on the backside of the Vail Headquarters complex, there will be very little seating on the inside of the building, which houses tanks and a bar and tap area.

There is plenty of area outside ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, WI: Rockhound Brewing forced to close down permanently
A Madison brewpub is closing its doors, saying it can’t see a way forward through the pandemic, WISC-TV3 reported.

Rockhound Brewing owner and brewmaster Nate Warnke made the announcement in a video on the brewpub’s Facebook page on October 15.

“Unfortunately, the world has changed dramatically around us, and all good things must come to an end,” the Madison native said in his video.

Rockhound Brewing opened in 2016, growing out of Warnke’s homebrewing hobby. Prior to opening the brewpub, Warnke worked as a business analyst and consultant for a Fortune 500 company.

“If I was my own analyst, I’d be advising myself that it’s time for this project to end. I can see no logical path forward for Rockhound,” Warnke said.

The brewpub will wind down its operations in the coming weeks, with the kitchen fully closing on November 14th. From there, they’ll plan to sell their beer in growlers and crowlers for as long as they can, or until the beer runs out.

Warnke says he’s offering one last new creation — a double IPA he’s calling “Last Call.”

Barley news China: China’s feed needs seen 10% up from last year
China had sold the bulk of its national corn reserves over the past years. The African swine fever destroyed a large part of its pork production. Although the government talks of a good crop, there are other reports of flood damage in the south and storm damage in the north, H. M. Gauger GmbH reported earlier in October.

The nation’s feed needs are seen 10% up from last year. In early September, the USDA estimated the Chinese imports in 2020/21 as follows: 99.0 mln tonnes of soybeans, 7.0 mln tonnes each of wheat and corn, 5 mln tonnes of barley, and 6.1 mln tonnes of sorghum; by now the estimates are considered much too low.

China already bought 10 mln tonnes of corn in the U.S., further U.S. sales of 3.4 mln tonnes to “unknown destinations” will probably go to China as well; total corn purchases for the crop year are seen between 20 and 30 mln tonnes (from the US., Ukraine and South America). Import numbers of wheat, barley and sorghum will be larger as well.

Brewery news UK: Marston’s reveals plans to cut about 2,150 jobs
Brewery and pub giant Marston's has revealed plans to cut about 2,150 jobs because of the ongoing impact of the Covid-19 pandemic, the Insider Media reported on October 15.

The Wolverhampton-headquartered company's chief executive Ralph Findlay said the move was an "inevitable consequence of the limitations placed upon our business".

The news comes in a trading update to the London Stock Exchange for the 53 weeks to 3 October 2020, days after its £780 mln joint venture with Carlsberg UK was cleared by the CMA.

The update has revealed that the company's group sales totalled £821m, 30 per cent below the prior year while total pub sales were £515 mln, a 34 per cent drop due to the Covid-19 lockdown and the disposal of 168 pubs for £61 mln in the first half.

Marston's Beer Company's sales were £306 mln, 22 per cent down, but off trade volumes were up 23 per cent.

Findlay said: "This year has been testing on many fronts, predominantly from having to navigate the consequences of Covid-19.

"Trading has been difficult, but to operate at 90 per cent of last year on a like-for-like basis is better than our forecast, ahead of the market and a highly creditable result.

"In part, this ...More info on site

Brewery news UK: Heineken fined for breaching UK pubs code
Heineken has been fined £2 mln ($2.5 mln) in the UK for forcing pubs it owned to sell “unreasonable levels of Heineken beers and ciders”, Yahoo Sports reported on October 15.

The Dutch brewing giant was handed the fine on October 15 by the UK’s Pubs Code Adjudicator, an ombudsman set up to oversee the Pubs Code. The adjudicator also released a damning report alongside the judgement, calling Heineken a “repeat offender.”

Heineken rejected the findings and said it was considering appealing against the fine.

The Pubs Code, which came into force in 2016, legislate for how pub owners with more than 500 establishments should treat landlords. Heineken’s fine is the first financial penalty imposed by the Pubs Code Adjudicator.

“The report of my investigation is a game changer,” adjudicator Fiona Dickie said in a statement. “It demonstrates that the regulator can and will act robustly to protect the rights that parliament has given to tied tenants.”

Dickie investigated how Heineken’s pub company subsidiary, Star Pubs and Bars, treated its tenants between 2016 and 2019.

Pubs can be either tied or untied to a brewery. Tied pubs agree to stock a certain amount of a brewery’s beer. Untied pubs — or free houses — can stock ...More info on site
