USA: Justice Department approves AB InBev’s purchase of Craft Brew Alliance
|
The U.S. Justice Department said on September 18 it approved Anheuser-Busch's plan to buy the shares of Craft Brew Alliance that it does not already own, Yahoo Finance reported.
The $220 million deal, which was announced in November, was approved on condition the companies sell Craft Brew Alliance's Kona brand beer.
The Portland-based CBA's other brands include Appalachian Mountain Brewery, Cisco Brewers, Redhook Brewery and Widmer Brothers Brewing.
Anheuser-Busch owned 31.2% of CBA before the deal was announced, and also distributed many of CBA's brands.
"CBA’s diverse portfolio of national lifestyle brands and award-winning regional breweries are an excellent complement to our family of craft partners," said Marcelo Michaelis, president of ABI's Brewers Collective business unit.
The companies said in a release that closing was expected "in the coming weeks."

USA: More than half a million brewing industry jobs at risk because of the coronavirus pandemic
|
More than half a million people in the US brewing industry will lose their jobs this year as a result of the coronavirus pandemic, according to the sector’s figureheads, The Drinks Business reported on September 23.
A report commissioned by John Dunham Associates claims that 651,000 jobs in brewing, distributing and retail “will be lost by the end of the year”, while overall beer sales could fall by as much as US$22 billion by the end of 2020.
Brewing roles are expected to be the hardest hit, with the report warning 3,600 brewers could lose their jobs by year end.
“The beer industry has seen a dramatic decline both in sales and jobs that rely on our nation’s most popular alcohol beverage,” said Jim McGreevy, president and CEO of the Beer Institute.
McGreevy said the US government needs to provide additional support such as freezing federal excise taxes. In 2017, the US congress passed a bill that cut federal excise tax for beer, wine and spirits producers, however, the legislation is not yet permanent. the country’s brewers are now putting pressure on the government to pass a new version of the Craft Beverage Modernization and Tax Reform Act to “make permanent reforms enacted in

UK: Maltsters’ contract prices disappoint malting barley producers

UK’s malting barley producers say they’ve been “kicked in the teeth” yet again with the confirmation by maltsters of the £130/tonne open market element of this year’s contract price, the Press and Journal reported on September 19.
Simpsons, Crisp Malt and Diageo have all announced their prices, with only Bairds left to confirm what it will pay once harvest is complete.
With the feed barley price at £125 – or more in some cases – growers say the effort that goes into producing malting quality grain is not being recognised by maltsters or distillers who gain international kudos for the provenance of their Scottish ingredients.
Yields have been high, and rejections because of “quality issues” have been growing in recent days, with one merchant reportedly accepting only six out of 22 loads of barley contracted for malting.
The fear is that with stores bursting with this year’s harvest combined with significant stocks held over from last year and the prospect of tighter Covid-19 restrictions for the hospitality sector, demand and prices for the product will remain low next year.

Barley harvest is advancing quickly throughout Canada. If it were not for wet, cold conditions in some regions the barley harvest would be close to finished, CMBTC reported on September 22.
The northern regions of Alberta have been plagued by wet and less than ideal growing conditions which delayed crop maturity and pushed back the start of harvest. Meanwhile, the majority of the harvest is complete in Saskatchewan although the Northwest region is being slowed down by nuisance rains. Manitoba is 90% finished their barley harvest.
Overall the malt barley harvested to date is showing very good quality with generally high test weights and plump kernels, low incidence of DON and limited chitting. There has been a relatively wide range of proteins with the majority of the samples in the 11-13.5% range. This is a high quality crop, and there will ample tonnage available for the domestic and the export market.

Recommendations for malt barley variety receivals in the 2021/22 harvest have been handed down by the Grain Industry Association of Western Australia's (GIWA) Barley Council, the Farm Weekly reported on September 22.
The suggestions, contained in a comprehensive report, came as a result of the GIWA Barley Forum discussion regarding the impact of the China barley tariffs and the malt barley variety rationalisation discussion held in late July.
Report lead author and Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development (DPIRD) senior research scientist Blakely Paynter said the malt barley variety receival recommendations have been developed by GIWA in consultation with the WA barley supply chain.
"The reduction in overall market demand for malt barley, associated with the tariffs imposed by China on the imports of Australian barley, favour the production of barley with a yield-feed focus rather than a malt-focus and result in a further reduction of the total area sown to barley in 2021," Mr Paynter said.
"Fortunately, the dominant barley varieties, RGT Planet and Spartacus CL, grown in WA can be received into malt segregations, ensuring we can still respond to any increased demand for malt barley should market conditions change.

The inventory of hops held by US growers, dealers, and brewers on September 1, 2020 totaled 130 million pounds, up 13 percent from September 1, 2019 stocks inventory of 115 million pounds, USDA reported.
Stocks held at dealer and grower locations on September 1, 2020 totaled 94.0 million pounds. Stocks held by brewers totaled 36.0 million pounds.
