Canada: Barley harvest begins in Alberta with good yields and proteins
|
Barley harvesting has begun in southern Alberta with good yields and proteins, but then slowed down in rainy weather, particularly in Saskatchewan, H. M. Gauger GmbH reported earlier in September.
On August 31, StatsCan published its crop forecast, 10.545 mln tonnes of barley as expected. The split up is 0.6 mln tonnes in Manitoba, 4.5 mln in Saskatchewan, 5.4 mln tonnes in Alberta.
Farmers sales are reported to be slow. Sales to China are thought to be 1 mln tonnes by now , the trade hopes to sell up to 3 mln tonnes of malting, FAQ, and feed barley to that country.

USA: Alcohol market must increase volumes by 19% in off-trade to offset on-trade losses
|
The US alcohol market must increase volumes by 19% in the off-trade to offset losses in the on-trade, which is unlikely to return to the same level as pre-Covid for some time, the IWSR Drinks Market Analysis has predicted.
According to research from the IWSR, around 80% of alcohol sales in the US were typically made in the off-trade, while the remaining 20% came from the on-trade.
However, the coronavirus pandemic has impacted the on-trade alcohol landscape, the IWSR said, with the balance between the two channels shifting as consumers move to at-home consumption.
The significant increase in US off-trade alcohol volumes is not enough to offset the losses in the on-trade, the IWSR said.
According to IRI measured channels cited by the IWSR, total alcohol volume sales for the off-trade rose by 9.3% in the year ending 16 August 2020. To overcome the losses in the on-trade, which is estimated to be down by approximately 75%, the off-trade would need to increase volumes by 19%, the IWSR has estimated.
Sales of alcohol through e-commerce channels are predicted to be up more than 300% year-on-year through July 2020. The IWSR said this is driven by convenience.
The IWSR said spirits and ready-to-drink products have been performing

USA, GA: Three Rangers Brewing Co. to hold its grand opening on September 11
|
Art Attaway is channelling his support of fellow U.S. Army Ranger veterans by starting a brewery in Dahlonega, the Gainesville Times reported on September 10.
Nestled in the North Georgia mountains, Three Rangers Brewing Co. set its grand opening for Friday, Sept. 11. The brewery, located at 3003 Morrison Moore East Parkway, shares a space with Etowah Meadery, which will celebrate its third year in business this October. Attaway co-owns the brewery with Blair Housley, who runs Etowah Meadery.
Three Rangers will launch with a lineup of six brews including a porter, IPA, pale ale, double IPA, wheat ale and lager. Attaway said each beer has an Army Ranger-inspired name like “Path Finder,” “Jump Master” or “Door Kicker.”
To give back to the Ranger community, Attaway said the brewery intends to redirect 20% of its profits to several Army Ranger-supporting organizations like the Three Rangers Foundation, Darby Project and GallantFew, all of which help veterans transition from military service to civilian life.
“Three Rangers represents U.S. Army Rangers’ past, present and future,” he said.” We honor the past, support the present and assure the legacy for future Rangers.”
Both co-owners of the brewery are veterans. Attaway served as a

Canada, AB: Two Pillars Brewery opens in Calgary’s Crescent Heights neighbourhood

A new brewery and taproom that is “built on authentic community enjoying life together, helping each other find hope and fulfillment, and inspiring those around them to do the same” has opened its doors in Calgary’s Crescent Heights neighbourhood, the Canadian Beer News reported on September 8.
Two Pillars Brewery has been founded by Boaz Leung and Jacob May, both immigrants to Canada who aim to use the “universal language of good food and good drink” to connect to their community.
The brewery opened over the Labour Day weekend with a line-up of core and rotating beers including Golden Strong Belgian Ale (8.6% abv), Wit Wheat Beer (5.5% abv), Pillars of Fire Tripel (5.5% abv), Get Punched Fruit Sour (4.5% abv), Blonde Ale (6.2% abv), Campfire & Scotch Scottish Ale (5.3% abv), Petrichor Brown Ale (5.9% abv), and Sticky Marriage Fruit Beer (5.6% abv).

USA, KY: Louisville's newest brewery Atrium Brewing about to open
|
Louisville's newest brewery is about to open in Shelby Park, the Courier Journal reported on September 10.
After three years in the works, Atrium Brewing is set to open Sept. 25 at 1154 Logan St. in a renovated building dating back to the 1890s. The team, led by owners Mark Rubenstein and Princeton Hurst, brought the building "down to the brick in some places" and built it into a comfortable, casual neighborhood brewery.
Now, the 4,000-square-foot building has booths lining the edges of the taproom, with tall beer hall-style tables in the center and a poured concrete bar top. Eventually, a stage will be set up for live performances, when the pandemic allows.
Rubenstein spent 23 years working at the University of Louisville as an assistant to the Dean of Arts and Sciences and has been a homebrewer since 1988. After a while, friends kept asking if they could buy beer and suggested he should open a brewery. After he retired from the University of Louisville a few years ago, a friend connected him to Hurst, and the brewery process began.
He said he's always liked the Shelby Park area.
"It was super important to me to have a great outdoor

Canada, ON: Red Barn Brewing now fully up and running in Ontario’s Chatham-Kent region
|
Two months after a opening a pop-up retail shop that saw them sell what they’d expected to be a month’s supply of beer in just a weekend, Ontario’s newest farm-based brewery has announced that it is now fully up and running in the province’s Chatham-Kent region, the Canadian Beer News reported on August 31.
Red Barn Brewing has been co-founded by married couple Denny and Sandy Vervaet, along with Sandy’s brother and head brewer Dan English. Sitting on a 100-acre farm that has been in the English family for three generations, Red Barn is located in a namesake building that has been purpose built for the brewery.
The brewery opened for patio service and growler fills this past weekend, with five beers available including Home Farm Blonde Ale (4.8% abv), Five Acre Island Citrus Blonde (5.1% abv), Belgian Heavy Draft Ale (7.6% abv), English Farm Session IPA (5% abv), and Harwich Moon Chocolate Porter (5.6% abv).
Red Barn Brewing is located at 20466 Lagoon Road in Blenheim, and will be open on Saturdays and Sundays, with patio table reservations available online starting at 9:00 AM on Thursday each week.

USA: Boston Beer to launch a craft non-alcoholic brew in early 2021
|
Boston Beer plans to launch a craft non-alcoholic brew in early 2021 with Samuel Adams Just the Haze. The company said in a statement it spent two years researching and brewing to create its hazy IPA, the Food Dive reported on September 11.
Just the Haze will be sold in 12-ounce cans, six packs and single cans. Boston Beer said the brew has an upfront citrus aroma with hints of grapefruit, tangerine and lime, as well as tropical and stone fruit notes including pineapple, guava, melon and peach.
The non-alcoholic beer space has been rapidly growing, with Boston Beer being the latest company to introduce a product. Earlier this year, Anheuser-Busch released its first zero-proof beer under the Budweiser brand called Budweiser Zero.
While some brewers may have been reluctant to enter the non-alcoholic beer space, its rapid growth in recent years has prompted some to take the plunge anyway.
“I may have once said that we would never brew a non-alcoholic (NA) beer, but I’ve learned over the years never to say never,” Jim Koch, founder and brewer of Samuel Adams, said in a statement.
While non-alcoholic offerings represent a small slice of the American beer market — just 0.37% of dollar

USA, IL: Conrad Seipp Brewing Company making a comeback in Chicago
|
Schlitz may have been the beer that made the Midwest famous, but Chicago’s Conrad Seipp wasn’t far behind. In the 1870s, The Conrad Seipp Brewing Company was one of the largest in Chicago, rolling out more than 250,000 barrels from its massive operation at 27th and Cottage Grove, InsideHook reported on September 11.
Coal and grain shortages during World War I didn’t do his business any favors. Neither did the Volstead Act. The brewery shut down for good in 1933, just months before the repeal of Prohibition.
But now Seipp’s great-great-granddaughter, Laurin Mack, is bringing the business back.
“Chicago has an amazing craft beer scene, one of the best and biggest in the country. But what we are is missing is a connection to our very rich brewing history,” suggests Mack. “By reviving Seipp’s beer, I wanted to help fill that gap.”
A German immigrant, Seipp began making beer in Chicago in 1854. Although he didn’t maintain a taproom at the brewery, folks didn’t have to go far to grab a glass: Seipp beer could be found in bars across the city.
As one of the few breweries to survive the 1871 fire, Seipp’s was well positioned to take a lead as Chicago

Canada, MB: Black Wheat Brewing aiming to open in Brandon by the end of the year
|
The first modern-day brewery in Brandon, Manitoba is aiming to open before the end of 2020, the Canadian Beer News reported on August 31.
Black Wheat Brewing is being established by Ted and Gloria Birch along with two other investors, and will be located in a recently constructed 4000-square-foot building at 402 10th Street.
As suggested by the name, the brewery’s signature beer will be Black Wheat Dunkelweizen, with 3 or 4 other core brands also planned, along with a rotation of seasonal and small-batch beers.
In addition to the two-vessel brewhouse, the facility will include a 75-person capacity tasting room, plus a seasonal patio with room for 25 more customers. The retail shop will offer takeaway beer sales, and core brands will also be packaged for sale at local Liquor Mart locations.
Black Wheat Brewing is aiming for an October opening, although potential construction and licensing delays could push its debut until later in the year.

Vietnam: Government to ban alcohol sales via ‘electronic channels’ - report
|
There’s going to be a new ban on alcohol sales in Vietnam, but apparently just on so-called “electronic channels”, The Thaiger reported on September 9.
Those who order craft beer that can’t be found at local stores might be out of luck. An announcement on the Royal Gazette says no more online alcohol sales. The ban will take effect 90 days after publication.
Selling and buying beer, wine and spirits online has become more popular, but the internet alcohol sales are harder to control than sales at local liquor stores, according to the announcement signed by PM Prayut Chan-o-cha. The announcement says it’s difficult to make sure the Alcoholic Beverage Control Act is being followed, like no alcohol sales before 5pm or on certain holidays, although some local stores don’t even follow all the rules.
Selling alcohol online without the buyer and seller physically meeting will be banned. The prime minister got advice from the National Alcoholic Beverage Policy Committee and decided to prohibit other online actions relating to alcohol sales. The Nation Thailand says the ban also includes persuading, introducing the alcoholic product or related services through electronic channels.
People will still be able to use electronic methods of payment, like bank

Mozambique: Heineken’s new production line to save Mozambique US$50 mln dollars a year in foreign exchange
|
The Mozambican government believes that a new production line at the brewery operated by the Dutch beer company Heineken, in Marracuene district, just outside Maputo, will save the country about 50 million dollars a year in foreign exchange which is currently being spent on importing Heineken beers, AllAfrica.com reported on September 10.
The new production line can fill 16,000 bottles in an hour, corresponding to 666 crates, each holding 24 bottles. According to a note from Heineken, the company invested 20 million US dollars in the new production line.
This is in addition to the 100 million dollars spent on building the brewery, which opened in March 2019. Initially the brewery only produced a local beer, baptised "Txila", which Heineken boasted was "specially made by Mozambicans for Mozambican consumers". Txila is brewed using 4,000 tonnes of maize a year, grown by Mozambican farmers in Catandica district in the central province of Manica.
There is no such concession to local inputs in the new production line which aims to produce Heineken that tastes exactly the same as Heineken brewed in Holland.
The Minister of Industry and Trade, Carlos Mesquita, who inaugurated the new line on September 9, said that in the past Heineken beer was
