Brewery news Canada, SK: Craft beer sales in Saskatchewan double since 2014
Craft beer is becoming more popular in Saskatchewan and many brewers say it isn't slowing down any time soon, CBC.ca reported on August 2.

According to the president of the Saskatchewan Craft Brewers Association (SCBA), Mark Heise, craft beer sales in the province have doubled since 2014.

Heise, who is also the president of Rebellion Brewing, said many of the province's craft brewers are home grown.

"We're all local folks born and raised here and you know that really means something to people," Heise said. "We're just genuine, hardworking Saskatchewan people and you know we are still a small enough province that that really resonates with people."

Heise said one of the obstacles for craft breweries is provincial regulations.

"The government is usually not great at being ahead of the curve when it comes to change," Heise said. "Change is difficult and cumbersome, there's a lot of bureaucracy and there's lots of regulation."

Heise said he expects the popularity of Saskatchewan craft beer to grow.

"I feel very very strongly that we're going to double in the next five years," Heise said. "We're really scratching the surface of what we can do with this industry."

Heise said he's currently in discussions with the Ministry of Advanced Education on ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, TX: Plateau Brewing Company going ahead with opening plans
In spite of the coronavirus pandemic, Greek-American Michael Choate who co-founded the Plateau Brewing Company with three of his high school friends is going ahead with plans to open the business, hopefully this year, according to a report on Fox West Texas.

Choate said that “he first got into the craft beer hobby while studying at the University of Texas at Austin” and “he and one of his partners began home brewing in their small apartment before involving their two friends,” but it wasn’t until “years later, in July 2018, Plateau Brewing Company was incorporated and born,” Fox reported.

Choate said that “it made sense to all of them to set up their headquarters in the hometown they keep returning to,” and “they each have family, friends and memories in San Angelo, and they wanted Plateau Brewing Company to be something the city could be proud of,” Fox reported.

Choate told The National Herald that Moutos is his mother’s maiden name and the building at 214 S. Chadbourne Street where his great-grandfather opened his restaurant after immigrating from Greece has been in the Moutos family for four generations.

“The story of the building is that of a Greek immigrant who was able to be ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, TX: Czech-inspired Pivovar Brewery coming to Waco
A Czech-inspired brewery, restaurant, bakery and boutique hotel is taking shape in downtown Waco despite some hurdles caused by COVID-19, which hit just weeks after construction on the massive project began, KWTX reported on August 3.

The 32,000-square-foot development in a building that last housed a plumbing company at South 8th Street at Jackson Avenue near the Magnolia Silos is called Pivovar, which means brewery in Czech.

The project is the brainchild or a Prague businessman named Julius Kramaric who visited some friends in Central Texas and fell in love with the area.

Brain Mitchell, owner of Mitchell Construction, visited Kramaric in Prague to get a better handle on his vision and is overseeing the project locally.

"He has always wanted to do something in the U.S. and had some friends while getting his doctorate degree in Hawaii and those friends are in Waco," Mitchell said.

"Originally he thought he'd do it in West but he needed a little larger town to pull from so he settled on Waco and has fallen in love with it and wants to make this his home."

The boutique hotel currently under construction will offer 27 rooms with views.

"The boutique hotel is going to be incredible with rooms overlooking McLane ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, SC: Five Forks Brewing to open in new development in Five Forks’ retail corridor
Five Forks Brewing has formally announced plans to open in the new development off Woodruff Road in the heart of Five Forks’ retail corridor, the Upstate Business Journal reported on July 30.

The brewery, which plans to open in November, is set to join Sidewall Pizza, Soul Yoga and Cocobowlz in the planned Five Forks development located at 2613 Woodruff Road, beside BI-LO and across the street from Publix. Tipsy Taco was originally set to open a new location in the development as well, but company officials said those plans were canceled after a new Tipsy Taco location took over the old Havana Kitchen space at 1133 Woodruff Road.

Five Forks Brewing will feature an outdoor space that stretches 225 feet long, enough “for you and your friends, family and dogs to enjoy and spread out,” according to a post on the brewery’s Instagram page.

Spencer Hines Properties, which is handling sales for the development, said in a statement that a key driver behind the project was the population growth in the area, with 50,600 residents living within a three-mile radius of the property, an 85% increase since 2000. An additional 10% growth is expected over the next five years, according to Spencer ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, MN: South x Southeast Minnesota Brewing Co already brewing in Pine Island
Ann Fahy-Gust and Tessa Leung, co-owners of South x Southeast Minnesota Brewing Co., a new brewery in Pine Island, began the process of making beer this week, PostBulletin.com reported on August 3.

The pair have moved the brewing operation from the old Grand Rounds restaurant on Broadway in Rochester to the new space in Pine Island. And while much of the equipment and several of the beer recipes will be the same as ones made popular at the Rochester brew pub, the new space in Pine Island comes with its own challenges.

"Brewing in a new place, we've had a little glitch now and then," Fahy-Gust said. "We're using well water. We use propane instead of natural gas."

All these little differences affect the beer, she said, so as they begin their brewing, they — along with brewers Jason Pahl and Aaron Espy — are mindful of little things that might impact the flavor of their brews.

None of that, of course, is stopping them from opening their brewery and providing tasty beverages to the public.

Once beer is ready to be sold, they'll have a "soft open," where, Leung said, they'll take online and phone orders for growlers and crowlers of beer and literally ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, ND: Icewind Brewing ready to open in Mapleton
After eight weeks of waiting, Icewind Brewing is ready to run its 3-day grand opening, giving people an opportunity to enjoy themselves with a cold drink outdoors, KVRR reported on July 30.

“There are a lot of breweries in town, making a lot of good beer, but there are a lot of classic styles that have been neglected, so we are trying to hit those and that has helped us quite a bit.”

The brewery makes over 13 different types of beers.

Brandvold says the business is a craft of love over years of making his own brews.

“I have been homebrewing for about 18 years, so it’s just one of those things. You can only take a hobby so far before you can make the jump, so we made the jump.”

Brandvold says it’s important for the business to bring in food trucks and live music to provide a full experience for their customers.

They hope this 3-day celebration can bring in both new and returning customers for years to come.

“So it’s kind of that small town feel of being at a brewery, a great brewery.”

Brewery news USA, TX: Two Wheel Brewing Co. looking for a buyer
Two Wheel Brewing Co., located in the Central Texas town of Buda, is looking for a buyer, San Antonio Current reported on July 31.

New Mill Capital, a national asset disposition firm, has been hired to sell the craft brewery as a turnkey operation, including its real estate, equipment and intellectual property. The facility's indoor taproom is a modest 50 by 100 feet, but there also are shaded areas outside with picnic benches and even a food truck, according to its listing.

Of course, the property — located about an hour and a half north of SA — also includes all the equipment new owners will need to make a lot of beer, and do it quickly.

The 5,000-square-foot production site includes a brewhouse, fermenters, brite tanks, hot and cold liquor tanks and the list goes on. Some of the equipment will go up for auction August 19.

“Two Wheel Brewery is the ideal location for someone to break into the suburban Austin area. It is close to the city, just a quick 15-minute drive, but also offers the Buda hometown feel,” Tim Watters, principal at New Mill Capital, said in a release.

The brewery is still open for business and will remain open pending ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, MA: Somerville Brewing Company going up for auction
According to the "Notices of Sale" section of the United States Bankruptcy Court website, Somerville Brewing Company is looking to sell its property and equipment and is planning to hold an internet auction, with a hearing on this scheduled for August 11, the Boston Restaurant Talk reported on August 3.

Back in September of 2019, the business filed for Chapter 11 Bankruptcy, with a U.S. Bankruptcy judge subsequently giving approval for the company to use its cash collateral and pay the workers' wages, allowing both the brewery and taproom on Ward Street and American Fresh Brewhouse & Beer Garden at Assembly Row to remain open through November 4, at which point it was awarded ongoing Chapter 11 protection, which allowed both locations to keep operating as usual. American Fresh Brewhouse & Beer Garden shut down temporarily in March of this year as the COVID-19 pandemic started to take hold, and it has remained closed while the brewery had been open for curbside beer pickup until recently.

Somerville Brewing company first opened its brewery and taproom in 2014, with its brewhouse at Assembly Row opening in 2017; the company also operated a seasonal beer garden at Assembly Row and is known for ...More info on site

Whisky news World: Beam Suntory sees net sales decline in January-June this year
Maker’s Mark owner Beam Suntory saw net sales decline 3% in the first six months of 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic, The Spirits Business reported on July 31.

From January to June 2020, Beam Suntory’s net sales in the US fell 3% as a result of “significantly lower” revenue due to the closure of the on-trade, which was offset by a boost in the off-trade.

“While our sales were substantially below our expectations at the start of the year, the people of Beam Suntory rose to the challenge and fuelled stronger momentum than we expected at the onset of the pandemic,” said Albert Baladi, president and CEO of Beam Suntory.

“Our teams demonstrated impressive agility to pivot in many important ways – to redirect resources to fast-growing channels such as off-premise and e-commerce, to meet consumers in the new ‘home premise’ and to support restaurants and bars through new revenue streams like cocktails to-go.”

The firm took a big hit in markets such as Spain, India and global travel retail, which were “severely” affected by the pandemic, resulting in double-digit losses.

However, the company recorded a low-single-digit sales increase in Japan, Germany, the UK and Russia, while Canada grew by double digits.

Brewery news Latvia: Carlsberg’s Aldaris brewery sees exports increase 58% in H1 2020
Latvia’s Aldaris brewery in the first half of this year saw its exports climb 58 percent from the respective period last year, LETA reported on August 4 citing Edgars Berzins, the logistics director of Carlsberg Baltic which owns Aldaris.

He said that before the Covid-19 pandemic, the company made a strategic decision to strengthen its positions in the existing markets, for example, in the UK. Even though restaurants and bars in the UK were closed during the pandemic, sales in stores increased.

At the same time, Berzins said that Aldaris' turnover slightly decreased in the first half of this year compared to 2019 because the increase in off-trade segment (stores, kiosks, alcohol stores, etc.) could not compensate for decline in on-trade segment (bars, restaurants, clubs, hotels, etc.).

Nevertheless, sales in June and July were positive and viewed with cautious optimism. If the global situation does not deteriorate, the turnover for this year could be similar to last year's results.

In 2019, Aldaris generated EUR 25.882 million in turnover, down 4.4 percent from a year ago, while loss increased 2.8 times to EUR 3.303 million.

Aldaris is part of the Danish beer giant Carlsberg. The Latvian brewery employs approximately 190 people. Aldaris’ portfolio comprises around 40 ...More info on site

Barley news Australia & India: India’s increasing beer consumption good news for Australian barley
An increase in the consumption of beer by a more affluent population in India is part of what makes the country an attractive alternative market for Australian malt barley, the Farm Weekly reported on August 2.

In 2017 and 2018 India produced about 3.2 billion litres of beer per year, making up about 25 per cent of the alcohol industry.

The population of the country is about 1.7 billion people in India, but only just over 200 million of those can afford to drink beer and of that 200 mln, there are only 22 mln who can afford to drink premium beer.

Speaking via video link at the Grain Industry Association of Western Australia's (GIWA) 2020 Barley Forum on August 3, Australian Export Grains Innovation Centre (AEGIC) barley technical manager Mary Raynes said there were more than 140 beer brands in India.

"Each State pretty much has its own brewery, primarily because out of the 25 States and seven Territories, they're all individually governed.

"Beer is highly taxed and with COVID-19 the tax on beer imports and exports went up around 25pc.

"The beer in India is marked as a strong beer, meaning it's higher in alcohol content, about six to eight per cent and it ...More info on site

Barley news UK: Early spring malting barley showing good yields and quality in southern England
Early spring malting barley crops are showing good yields and quality across southern England, helped by April and May rainfall, while other crops into East Anglia have suffered from the drought, Farmers Weekly reported on August 4.

Crops on the chalklands of Hampshire, Dorset and Wiltshire are showing promising harvesting results, although those further east suffered in the bone-dry May and yields and quality are down on last year.

Some early crops south of the M4 motorway showed yields of 7-8.5 t/ha, and many have low nitrogen contents of 1.35-1.55%, which the maltsters prefer. East Anglia was braced for lower yields and higher nitrogens.

One of the early-harvested crops was in Dorset, where farm manager Martin Ford has just finished cutting 140ha of the variety Propino, yielding 8.2t/a with a respectable specific weight.

“We are very pleased with the Propino – it did well through the drought and seems to like our light chalky soils,” he says.

The nitrogen content is not yet known, but he is hopeful of good quality after 180 ha of the old winter malting variety Maris Otter yielded 6.8 t/ha at a low nitrogen content of 1.35-1.45%.

Most maltsters look for a nitrogen content below 1.65% for distilling and specialist beers, ...More info on site

Brewery news Japan & South Korea: Japanese brands from beer to clothes walloped by boycott by South Korean consumers
Japanese brands from beer to clothes were walloped by a boycott by South Korean consumers last year - but tech names stood out for their resilience, according to data assessing the effects, the Nikkei Asian Review reported on August 2.

The boycott was sparked a year ago when Japan's government imposed curbs on exports of chipmaking materials needed by South Korean semiconductor producers such as Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix. Although Tokyo says the restriction was prompted by concerns over South Korea's own export restrictions, some see the move as related to South Korean court rulings that allow assets of Japanese companies to be seized and used to compensate Korean victims of World War II-era forced labour.

Tokyo's action sparked a strong response by South Korean consumers, who began to shun Japanese products -- in some cases with severe financial effects.

According to Seoul-based research company CEO Score, the combined operating profits of 31 Japanese consumer companies in their South Korean businesses plunged 71.3% to 145.9 billion won ($121 million) in 2019, compared with the previous year.

The companies' combined revenue fell by 6.9% to 7.9 trillion won during the same period.

The biggest impact has been on companies with products more easily substituted - ...More info on site
