USA, IL: Alter Brewing + Kitchen opens its doors in downtown St. Charles
|
A new brewery and kitchen has opened its doors in downtown St. Charles, Kane County Chronicle reported on May 19.
Alter Brewing + Kitchen is now open from 4 to 8 p.m. seven days a week at 12 S. First St. for takeout orders. Establishments are not able to open their dining rooms at this time because of the state’s stay-at-home order put in place to slow the spread of COVID-19.
The to-go menu features a variety of items, including crab cake bites, shrimp linguine, breaded chicken sandwich and a caprese melt. Call 331-901-5949 to place an order. Online ordering will be available soon.
Alter Brewing + Kitchen has an indoor seating capacity of 160 people and its outdoor patio that overlooks the Fox River can seat more than 100 people. Alter operates another brewery in Downers Grove.

USA, NC: Thirsty Nomad Brewing to close for good on May 28
|
Charlotte’s Thirsty Nomad Brewing will close its doors for good May 28, the Charlotte Observer reported on May 21.
While the video announcement founder Brad Ledbetter posted to Facebook was short and matter of fact, he has since shared a few reasons that the brewery — which he founded in 2016 — would soon shut its doors. And he said it has nothing to do with COVID-19.
“I just want everybody to not make the same mistakes I did,” Ledbetter said.
Chief among the reasons Ledbetter gave for the brewery’s closure was its location. The office park where Thirsty Nomad is located isn’t far from The Olde Mecklenburg Brewery, Sugar Creek Brewing Co., GoodRoad CiderWorks, Queen Park Social and others in Lower South End.

USA, IN: 3 Floyds Brewing Co. brewpub closes indefinitely, brewing operations to continue
|
When 3 Floyds Brewing Co. closed the doors to their brewpub on March 15 in response to the coronavirus pandemic, their leadership made it clear that safety was their top priority while expressing a desire to reopen as soon as possible, The Indianapolis Star reported on May 20.
More than two months later, the 3 Floyds team has determined that the risk created by the outbreak is too great, and has decided to close the Munster eatery and gathering spot indefinitely.
All plans to expand the brewpub have also been suspended.
"There’s no other way to put it — 2020 has sucked. We’ve been navigating this new world day by day and rolling with the punches it has thrown at us," 3 Floyds officials wrote in a Facebook post shared around 12:45 p.m. on May 20.
According to the Lake County Health Department, restaurants and bars that serve food in the county could begin operating at 50% capacity beginning May 18.
"The safety of our customers and staff is our first priority, and at this time, we do not have immediate plans to reopen 3 Floyds Brewpub for bar or dine-in service," the post continues. "We’re going to continue to brew the beer that brought

Australia: Fewer Australians drinking alcohol at home
|
Fewer Australians are drinking alcohol at home despite reported stockpiling of booze from liquor stores and supermarkets during COVID-19 restrictions, Inside FMCG reported on May 21.
Roy Morgan’s latest Alcohol Consumption Report found that drinking at home is closely connected to age and the older generation is more inclined to drink alcohol at home.
The research agency said that a total of 66.3 per cent (13,073,000) of Australians aged 18+ in the year to March 2020 consumed alcohol in an average four-week period, down from 67.5 per cent (13,102,000) 12 months ago.
“Our data shows a consistent decline in Australians’ alcohol consumption. Looking back to 2006, 73.5 per cent of the adult population were regular drinkers. That has dropped to 66.3 per cent in the 12 months to March 2020, which represents a large number of people who no longer choose to consume alcohol regularly,” Roy Morgan CEO Michele Levine said.
Roy Morgan said that about two-thirds of Australian drinkers (65.4%) ‘drink alcohol mostly at home’.
“During the early stages of the COVID-19 lockdown, the panic buying of large quantities of alcohol prompted understandable concern from health authorities and saw the introduction of buying limits. However, it’s likely the alcohol bought was simply a substitute

UK: Innis & Gunn submits planning application for new Edinburgh brewery
|
A top Scottish brewing company has submitted an application for planning permission for the first large-scale new brewery in Edinburgh for over 150 years, the Scottish Daily Record reported on May 20.
Set to be built at Heriot-Watt University’s Research Park in the west side of the city, Innis & Gunn's planned full-scale brewery will create up to 30 new jobs and see the brand’s 45 office-based staff relocate from its current head office in Edinburgh’s Randolph Crescent.
The partnership is the UK’s first major collaboration of this type between a brewery and a university and will create a world-centre for brewing studies and applied learning.
As well as brewing Innis & Gunn’s flagship Lager Beer and The Original, the brewery will include a high-speed canning and bottling line and will enable the company to consolidate all currently outsourced production under one roof.
By installing modern equipment and technology Innis & Gunn’s Founder Dougal Gunn Sharp stated the project will reduce Innis & Gunn’s carbon footprint by up to 30 per cent.
The master brewer said: "I am excited that today we submit our planning application. This means that the project now enters a statutory phase during which our application will be considered by the
