Brewery news USA: Craft brewers generated roughly 0.4% of GDP in 2018
Small and independent U.S craft brewers generated $79.1 billion in economic impact in 2018, which represented roughly 0.4 percent of the gross domestic product, according to industry trade group the Brewers Association’s (BA) 2018 Economic Impact Report, Brewbound reported.

The Boulder, Colorado-headquartered not-for-profit added that the $79.1 billion amounted to a 4% increase over 2017’s $76.1 billion in output. A similar report shared by the BA in 2017 concluded that the craft brewing industry generated $67.8 billion in economic impact in 2016. Another, in 2012, reported $33.9 billion in economic output.

The 2018 economic impact analysis pulled data from the BA’s annual Beer Industry Production Survey, the bi-annual Brewery Operations Benchmarking Survey and other government and market data. Craft brewers’ economic impact was derived from the total impact of craft beer through the three-tier distribution system, as well as sales of non-beer items such as food and merchandise at brewpubs and taprooms.

The release of the new analysis comes about a week before the BA’s largest consumer-facing event of the year, the annual Great American Beer Festival in Denver.

According to the BA, the craft brewing industry was responsible for creating more than 559,545 total jobs last year, with 150,055 jobs directly at breweries. ...More info on site

Hops news New Zealand & USA: New Zealand hops in high demand among US brewers
New Zealand hops are in demand in the United States as craft beer brewers compete to achieve a point of difference, Stuff.co.nz reported on October 1.

The Tasman District produces distinct flavours that cannot be replicated, according to Jason Judkins, chief executive of Nelson's Hop Revolution, and US brewers are keen to use New Zealand hops to stand out among competitors.

Judkins visited 50 breweries on a recent trip the US.

He says Hop Revolution will be working with about 30 of those breweries to supply next year's harvest from its 116 hectare Tapawera hop garden.

Hop Revolution is developing the garden with My Farm Investments and is in the process of buying a second property, Wairua Hop Garden, in Motueka.

Judkins says it was clear from his visit that Tapawera's hop supply could be sold many times over.

Hop Revolution wants a direct relationship with US brewers, who Judkins says are interested in a connection to the farm.

Craft beers account for 13 per cent of beer sales in the US and there are more than 7000 craft breweries in the country.

Hop Revolution is working on an allocation and partnership model and is contracted to supply 60 to 70 per cent of next year's harvest to ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, OH: FigLeaf Brewing Company acquired by March First Manufacturing LLC
March First Manufacturing, LLC, parent company of March First Brewing and Sycamore Distilling (Sycamore Whiskeys, Voltage Vodkas, Cooper Island Rums), has announced its acquisition of Middletown, Ohio-based FigLeaf Brewing Company, the Brew Studs reported on September 24.

FigLeaf Brewing will be celebrating its 3rd anniversary on October 12th and is known for its popular Basmati Cream Ale and Blackberry Fizz offerings. FigLeaf currently distributes throughout eighteen counties in Southwest Ohio and the Miami Valley as well as six counties in Northern Kentucky.

“We are thrilled to welcome the FigLeaf team, brand and product mix into our family,” March First company spokesperson Josh Engel said. “FigLeaf’s lineup is very complimentary to the other March First brands and has a wonderful and loyal following extending well into Monroe, Middletown, Trenton, Greater Miami Valley and metropolitan Dayton markets.”

March First Brewing—whose name pays homage to the state of Ohio, founded March 1, 1803—is Cincinnati’s only brewery, cidery and distillery. They specialize in “drinkable” craft beer, cider, and spirits and proclaim to not follow popular trends or industry norms.

Founders of FigLeaf Brian Yavorsky and Andy Allgeyer say they will continue their original mission to grow and expand the FigLeaf brand, taproom, distribution footprint and product lines.

Brewery news USA, MN: Falling Knife Brewing Co. being launched by three friends in Minneapolis
For several years, three friends — Tom Berg, Andy Rutledge and Dan Herman — spent a lot of time talking about launching a brewery, the Minneapolis Star Tribune reported on September 30.

“Their conversations escalated, and escalated,” said Herman. “Finally, we just looked at each other and said, ‘We’re really doing this, aren’t we?’ And we all said, ‘Yeah.’”

They sure are. Their Falling Knife Brewing Co. is opening in mid-October, but on Tuesday, October 1, beer drinkers can get a preview of their handiwork, when Tilia chef/owner Steven Brown hosts a gathering at his Linden Hills restaurant.

The event is no coincidence: Herman spent eight years behind Tilia’s bar.

“It’s going to be a really cool moment to see our beer at Tilia, where I worked for forever,” said Herman.

Starting at 9 p.m., three kegs will be tapped: Cloud Surfing, a Hazy Double IPA; Ghost Step, a coffee sweet stout done in collaboration with neighboring UP Roasters, and Freischutz, a Northern German pilsner.

The trio has taken over, expanded and transformed the former NorthGate Brewing facility, located in an industrial park in northeast Minneapolis. The 149-seat taproom will feature table service — a rarity in Minnesota — and is being finished with custom-made furniture ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, NY: Simple Motive Brewing coming to Hudson Valley within the next year
Add Simple Motive Brewing in Yonkers to the list of breweries opening within the next year in the Hudson Valley, The Journal News reported on September 24.

The new Lake Street microbrewery, complete with a tasting room, should open next year and will feature an event space next to the brewing tanks for company gatherings, larger parties and other events.

It is part of a mixed use development called The Mill, located in the historic Alexander Smith Carpet Mills factory. The redevelopment — construction is going on now — will, when complete in spring 2020, include a food hall, axe throwing, an escape room, co-working and other destination tenants. The space is being developed by Momentum Realty Acquisitions.

As for the brewery, head brewer and co-owner Kevin Glessing said beers will include lean hoppy beers, robust porters, stouts and seasonal creations. And, thanks to a one-barrel pilot system, they'll always be experimenting. "We want to keep it interesting," he said.

There will also be small plate items like charcuterie, cheeses and Glessing's own handmade artisan bread. The focus, he said, will be on local and farm-raised ingredients and items that pair well with beer.

Plus, the shared space with The Mill will allow for ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, PA: Iron Hill Brewery & Restaurant to open its first full-scale production brewery
Iron Hill Brewery & Restaurant announced on September 25 that it will open its first full-scale production brewery near Exton, Chester County, the Reading Eagle reported.

The brewery and restaurant, which will be known Iron Hill Brewery & Taphouse, will be located at The Shops on Eagleview Boulevard, 240 Eagleview Blvd., Uwchlan Township. It is expected to open in summer 2020.

Iron Hill Brewery & Taphouse will allow Iron Hill to increase its overall brewing capacity as it continues to expand its restaurant locations and bring canning operations in-house. It will also serve as an innovation kitchen for future companywide menu offerings, company officials said.

The brewery will initially have the capability to produce ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, GA: Chattabrewchee Southern Brewhouse becomes Columbus’ second craft brewery
Columbus continues to grow as new businesses pop up, including Chattabrewchee Southern Brewhouse, the city’s second brewery aside from the Cannon Brew Pub, WBTV reported on September 25.

Chattabrewchee is 100percent veteran-owned and is America’s only active-duty female-veteran owned brewery.

Owner Maj. Kathy Denehy is currently at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, but News Leader 9 spoke with owner Michael Denehy.

Chattabrewchee opened its new location in Columbus on 6th Avenue a little more than a month ago. Their original location is in West Point, Georgia.

Michael Denehy said moving to Columbus, so close to Fort Benning, helps them stay connected with the military community.

“It made sense with the numbers. It’s Georgia’s second-largest city. It was always part of our business plan going back as far as 2015 when we wrote our original plan, and it was always something we wanted to do as veterans ourselves, be part of this veteran community," he said.

Chattabrewchee has 10 beers on tap including the Nine Line Double IPA.

“All proceeds of the Nine Line Double IPA go to a homeless veteran’s shelter right here in the state of Georgia," Michael Denehy said.

Last year, Michael Denehy said Chattabrewchee got recognition as being named one of the top 10 breweries in Georgia ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, OK: Cooper and Mill Brewing Company to get financing assistance for launching in Bartlesville
The Bartlesville Redevelopment Trust Authority met on September 25 and have decided to assist Cooper and Mill Brewing Company with financing assistance, Bartlesville Radio reported.

The Brewing Company will be located at 200 South Dewey Ave. and they hope to be open in late April. John Kane has had a vision to start up a brewery for the last five years. Kane explains how he hopes the company will look when they first open.

With the equipment they are currently buying, the company could currently make up to 10,000 barrels of beer before having to get more. Kane said the company had trouble finding a name, but explains on how they settled with Cooper and Mill Brewing Company. Cooper and Mill Brewing Company hopes to have 10 beers on tap. They plan on having an area for pool tables along with a corn hole set. Their plan is to start selling locally at area restaurants in Bartlesville before reaching out to Tulsa, Stillwater and Oklahoma City.

While they don't plan on serving food, Cooper and Mill Brewing Company does plan on reaching out to area restaurants and have “runners” who would bring food back to the brewery where the patrons could eat ...More info on site

Brewery news Hong Kong: Shares in AB InBev’s Asia Pacific unit up 4% on market debut
Shares in AB InBev’s Asia-Pacific unit, which last week raised about $5 billion after relaunching its initial public offering (IPO), gained as much as 4% on their market debut in Hong Kong on Monday, September 30, Reuters reported.

Anheuser-Busch InBev NV (AB InBev), the world’s largest brewer, relaunched the unit IPO this month after cancelling a plan for a bigger float in July citing “several factors, including the prevailing market conditions”.

The Asia unit, Budweiser Brewing Company APAC Ltd, raised about $5 billion in the world’s second-biggest IPO this year, after pricing the Hong Kong float at the bottom of a marketed range.

Budweiser APAC shares rose to as much as HK$28.10 at open on Monday, compared to its IPO price of HK$27 per share. The stock was trading at HK$28, up 3.79%, at 1001 local time (0201 GMT), while the market index <.HSI> was down 0.2%.

Proceeds from the IPO of Budweiser APAC, whose portfolio of more than 50 beer brands includes Stella Artois and Corona, will help AB InBev reduce debt of over $100 billion accumulated following the purchase of rival SABMiller in late 2016.

The brewer also has another goal – to create an Asian champion to spur consolidation. Analysts see the ...More info on site

Brewery news Denmark: Carlsberg to half amount of water needed for its Fredericia brewery
Beer giant Carlsberg is poised to half the amount of water needed to run its brewery in Fredericia, Denmark, with the unveiling of plans for a ground-breaking water recycling plant at the site last week, BusinessGreen reported on September 30.

The Frederica brewery is set to be home to Carlsberg's first water recycling system, which will reduce average water consumption at the site from 2.9 hectolitres (hl) of water per hl of beer to 1.4 hl of water per hl of beer.

Carlsberg says the system will make it the first brewery to "virtually eliminate water waste", future-proofing the site as part of the firm's Together Towards ZERO sustainability strategy.

The upgrade is also expected to cut energy consumption by 10 per cent by reusing hot water and generating biogas.

The company said it expects the water recycling plant to be in test production by the end of 2020, and fully operational by early 2021.

"This is a big investment for us, but also a necessary next step on our journey towards ZERO water waste across all our breweries," said Philip Hodges, EVP of integrated supply chains at Carlsberg Group. "By recycling 90 per cent of all process water, the Fredericia brewery will halve its ...More info on site

Brewery news Russia: Introduction of ‘homebrew index’ could help monitor economic performance - economists
A group of economists in Russia have suggested that the answer to forecasting future economic crises could lie in the country's cherished samogon, or illegal homebrew, BBC reported on September 30.

A team led by Alexei Zubets, a researcher at Moscow's Financial University, carried out a nationwide poll about drinking habits earlier this year, and discovered that people feeling the financial pinch tend to switch to homemade spirits or bootleg booze.

This shows that the introduction of a "samogon index" could provide the government with another way of monitoring economic performance, he told the official newspaper Rossiyskaya Gazeta, adding that the latest findings suggest things are already looking up.

"Our research shows that production of home-made alcohol and its trade volume in Russia have not increased in the last year. And there are a number of signs they are in decline. We'll most likely see real incomes grow in the coming months," Mr Zubets said.

The proposal has made waves among analysts of the sector. Some, like Vadim Drobiz of the Centre for Research of Federal and Regional Alcohol Markets, agree that alcohol could be used as a "barometer of economic prosperity".

But he suggests that an index based on the quantity of legal spirits ...More info on site

Brewery news UK: Supermarkets close to Scotland report increased alcohol sales after minimum unit pricing introduction
Supermarkets close to Carlisle and Berwick reported a surge in alcohol sales after minimum unit pricing was introduced in Scotland, The Guardian reported on October 2.

A study for NHS Scotland found that alcohol sales jumped by 40% in one English supermarket close to the border and 25% in another, in the three months after cheap alcohol sales were banned in Scotland.

Minimum unit pricing (MUP) came into force in Scotland on 1 May 2018, in an attempt to cut Scotland’s higher-than average alcohol consumption and high death rates from alcohol-related diseases.

It bars retailers from selling alcoholic drinks, including beers, wines, spirits and ciders, at less than 50p per unit of alcohol. The Welsh government is also introducing minimum pricing and its cross-border effects will be closely studied by ministers in Cardiff.

The NHS analysis of the impact of MUP on retailers found this meant sales of cut-price drinks such as ciders or own brand vodka fell in Scotland, while overall consumption of alcohol fell slightly.

A study in the British Medical Journal last week found that MUP led to alcohol consumption falling by 1.2 units per person per week, equivalent to a measure of spirits or half a pint of beer. The impacts ...More info on site
