Brewery news USA, WA: Stemma Brewing Co. already open in Bellingham
Stemma Brewing Co. may have just opened, but it’s been a nearly decade long dream for Jason Harper, the Bellingham Herald reported on July 7.

Harper and his wife, Kim, opened the brewery on June 29 at 2039 Moore St., near Interstate 5 and Iowa Street. It currently offers five Stemma beers and two locally made ciders on tap. A food truck called Mr. Frank’s “The Bus” is expected to open there in coming weeks.

Jason Harper has been home brewing since 2010. While at Western Washington University he wrote a business plan on a brewery for one of his classes in 2011, a time when Boundary Bay Brewery and Chuckanut Brewery were the main local breweries in Bellingham. After graduating from Western he needed to make some money for his brewery idea to happen, so he landed a job at Dickerson Distributors.

While the number of breweries in Bellingham has exploded to more than 12 during his time at Dickerson, Jason Harper said his original business plan hasn’t changed that much. He believes Bellingham has the capacity to be like Bend, Ore., which has around 22 breweries.

“I believe there is still room for good breweries to shine,” he said in an interview ...More info on site

The new location is scheduled to open by the end of 2019, according to the Facebook post.

The company has several locations across Mid Missouri with one currently in Columbia. The Columbia location has been up and running for five years.

Brewery news USA, CA: Helmsman Ale House to open in Newport in a few weeks
Through good times and bad, Newport’s Balboa Peninsula has always attracted the curious. From the Balboa Pavilion and the Fun Zone to the Rendezvous Ballroom and Lido Marina Village with its Art Deco movie theater, the long, low sand spit has offered a wide variety of pleasures over the last century, the Los Angeles Times reported on July 2.

A recent renaissance has brought new restaurants, bars and hotels. Via Lido and other neighborhoods have been attractively revitalized.

One of the visionaries has been Mario Marovic. His Lounge Group has created several successful and forward-looking concepts in Newport, such as Dory Deli, Stag Bar + Kitchen and Malarky’s Irish Pub. They own popular properties in other parts of Orange County as well.

Marovic and partner Andrew Gabriel are about to place another big bet on the Peninsula. They’re opening the Helmsman Ale House in a few weeks. It will occupy the former site of Newport Beach Brewing Co., a popular watering hole for more than 20 years. Dylan Mobley, who held positions at Stone Brewing Co., Angel City Brewing and Bottle Logic Brewing, will be the brew master.

Hatch Design Group, a local firm that has reimagined many O.C. restaurants, is renovating the 4,200-square-foot ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, ND: Phat Fish Brewing Company now open in Dickinson
Dickinson is expanding its brewing scene. Phat Fish Brewing Company, a new brewery and pizzeria is now open in Dickinson, KFYR-TV reported on July 5.

There are four partners, a couple who moved from Montana and a couple from Dickinson. Melissa Scharf said she left her job in Montana and moved to Dickinson to fulfil this goal.

It began a lifetime membership program, called Mug Club, it provides guests with discounts and sold out the first five weeks. She says many breweries in Montana have similar promotions.

"When we think of a brewery, we think of people coming in and just hanging out and playing games, food, people visiting, we have a biog patio area outside where we have games people can play in the yard out there, we really just want it to be a low key and relaxed place where people can come and enjoy their time," said Scharf.

The company says it's excited to bring something unique to Dickinson and still has open positions. Owners say the environment is family friendly, and there's a room for children.

Brewery news USA, CT: Winsted’s Little Red Barn Brewers soft opening exceeds expectations
One of the newest businesses in Winsted, Little Red Barn Brewers, say their soft opening last week exceeded expectations, the Danbury News Times reported on July 2.

Nils Johnson, a co-owner of Lake Street brewery with Matthew and Nathan Day, all Barkhamsted natives, called the first week in business “phenomenal.”

“We didn’t just meet our expectations, we just blew past them,” he said. “We’re very encouraged. We had a tremendous turnout, and got a lot of positive feedback. I don’t know who was more excited about it, us or the people who showed up.”

A grand opening is scheduled for July 14, but Johnson said the brewery now is on a full schedule and will be open from 3-9 p.m. Wednesdays; noon to 10 p.m. Thursdays through Saturdays; and noon to 8 p.m. Sundays.

Last week, the brewery added food trucks, so people could enjoy a snack or meal with their beer.

“We’ll continue that,” Johnson said. “Our goal is to have it least one, if not two, food trucks a week. It’s tough to get them, because a lot of breweries are taking on the same concept.

“But we were lucky,” he said. “We got startup trucks and they wanted to come, and they were ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, SD: Severance Brewing Company to launch in Sioux Falls in less than a month
The doors to Severance Brewing Company will be open to Sioux Falls in less than a month, the Sioux Falls Argus Leader reported on July 3.

The new brewing company is set to open its brewery and taproom on Aug. 2 inside The Cascade, the apartment complex on Phillips Avenue across from the Levitt Shell inside Falls Park.

“It’s been a long time in the making,” said owner and co-founder Mark Stavenger. We’ve been working on it for almost two years now so we’re ready.”

Stavenger said the team is still planning the specifics of their opening, such as food trucks or catering, but they plan to have 11 beers on tap, along with cold-brew coffee and dry-hop infused waters and lemonade for non-drinkers and designated drivers.

Two of those beers include the Monster Cookie Stout — an oatmeal stout with the hints of peanut butter, chocolate and brown sugar — and a hazy, fruitier New England IPA.

Construction on Severance Brewing began April 1. Today, Stavenger said they’re installing countertops and fermenting six of the beers that will be on tap on opening day.

Brewery news USA, GA: Round Trip Brewing looking for property in Atlanta’s neighborhood of Underwood Hills
Another brewery plans to open in the Underwood Hills neighborhood in Atlanta’s Westside.

Round Trip Brewing is apparently seeking to acquire property along Seaboard Industrial Boulevard on the edge of the northwest Atlanta neighborhood of Underwood Hills, according to Atlanta Business Chronicle.

The brewery’s Instagram account states they hope to open sometime early next year.

Round Trip is located between Atlanta Brewing Company and Second Self Beer in the neighborhood, which will also include a second location of Scofflaw Brewing at the Chattahoochee Food Works.

Steady Hand Beer just opened earlier this year along Ellsworth Industrial Boulevard off of Chattahoochee Avenue in Blandtown.

Brewery news USA, TX: Auld Brewing Company to become Borger’s first nano brewery
More than 4,200 breweries have opened across the country over the last five years.

Two years ago, a record number of breweries opened in the United States, but the number of closures also rose to 70 percent, according to a report from an industry trade group.

For the first time in Borger’s history, a nano brewery will soon open its doors, abc7amarillo.com reported on July 6.

“We decided to find a small community to put in a nano brewery,” said Andrea Auld, co-founder of Auld Brewing Company.

“We kind of tested the waters in a lot of places and we like that there was more of a drive to get a brewery put in Borger,” said Raymond Auld, co-founder of Auld Brewing Company.

There are more than 250 breweries open in Texas. That number is up from 59 in 2011. The nano brewery will sit inside a Tax Increment Reinvestment Zone. This has the potential to bring the City of Borger a big economic boost.

“We had to make some changes to the zoning because our zoning was so old,” said Karen Felker, Mayor pro tem. “The old zoning didn’t even address where a brewery or a gunsmith for that matter could open, so we addressed ...More info on site

Barley news France: Barley crop ratings fall after heatwave
The condition of French cereal crops declined in the week to July 1, farm office FranceAgriMer said on July 5, suggesting a negative impact from a record-breaking heatwave.

In a weekly crop report, FranceAgriMer estimated that 75% of soft wheat was in good or excellent condition by July 1, down from 80% a week earlier although still above a year-earlier score of 73%.

Spring barley saw the sharpest deterioration, with the good/excellent rating losing 10 points to 76%.

For winter barley, FranceAgriMer rated 73% of crops as good/excellent, down from 75% from a week earlier.

Some 22% of the winter barley area had been harvested, up from 1% a week earlier, FranceAgriMer said.

Brewery news New Zealand & India: DB Breweries acquires licensing rights for India’s Kingfisher beer
Auckland brewing company DB Breweries has acquired the licensing rights for Kingfisher beer from Bangalore-based United Breweries for an undisclosed sum, the New Zealand Herald reported on July 8.

From 2020, Kingfisher beer sold in New Zealand and Australia will be manufactured and distributed exclusively by DB Breweries, adding the popular beer brand owned by South India-based conglomerate to its portfolio which already includes international beer brands Tiger and Heineken.

Kingfisher beer sold in this country has been produced in New Zealand for more than a decade. DB Breweries will take over licensing from Independent Liquor, owned by parent company Asahi Beverages, in February.

DB Breweries sales director Paul Millward said the company was still "working through" where in the country it would produce Kingfisher beer but said it had the ability to do so with its current infrastructure.

Millward said DB Breweries was now focused on how it could manage the brand and grow its distribution across the country.

"Kingfisher, in terms of dollars of the beer category in New Zealand, [makes up] 1.5 per cent of the beer category so this is quite a significant brand. It's also the largest and fastest growing Asian beer brand in New Zealand," Millward said.

"We're pretty rapt ...More info on site

Brewery news UK: UK’s Trappist brewers struggling with demand
The only monks in the UK to brew an officially recognised Trappist beer say they are unable to satisfy demand, BBC reported on July 7.

The brewery at Mount Saint Bernard Abbey, near Coalville, Leicestershire, was set up one year ago.

Since then, it has produced about 30,000 bottles of Tynt Meadow but there have been worldwide requests for more.

The brewery is one of only 14 in the world allowed to call itself a Trappist brewery - where all the money raised is used to fund the monastery.

The beer - named after the meadow where monks settled in 1835 - is sold at the abbey shop and by some local retailers, but about a third is sold through a distribution company. It is proving particularly popular in Belgium and the Netherlands.

The monks also drink it themselves on a Sunday.

Father Joseph Delargy said: "We haven't had any difficulty in selling it. What we produce, we can sell.

"We have a pattern of regular production and regular sales so now, after this first year, we're in a position where we're quite happy."

Abbott of the monastery, Erik Varden, said they had been approached by retailers around the world wanting to stock the beer including in the ...More info on site

Brewery news Rwanda: Government to reduce tax on alcohol brewed from local raw materials
Rwanda’s government has moved to reduce consumption tax on alcoholic drinks brewed from locally sourced raw materials, The New Times reported on July 8.

In a draft law presented in Parliament on July 8 by the Minister for Finance and Economic Planning, Uzziel Ndagijimana, the Government seeks to reduce consumption tax rate on beers and wines made using locally produced raw materials.

Once the proposed amendment to the law on the excise duty on some imported or locally manufactured products and determines the procedure of its collection is approved by Parliament, the consumption tax levied on locally produced alcohol could reduce significantly.

The excise duty levied on beers whose local raw material content excluding water is at least 70 per cent by weight of its constituents, will be set at 30 per cent, down from the current 60 per cent.

The same rule incentivising locally-based production will apply to wines, whose local content excluding water is at least 70 per cent by weight of its constituents, paying 30 per cent excise tax instead of the current 70 per cent.

The current consumption tax law doesn’t distinguish the taxing rate for wines or beers found on the Rwandan market based on whether their ingredients are based ...More info on site
