USA: Beer sales in dollars up midway through 2019
|
A majority of Americans say beer is their alcoholic beverage of choice during the July 4 holiday, according to a survey commissioned by national trade group the Beer Institute (BI).
The poll — conducted by Quadrant Strategies between June 21-25 — asked 1,000 legal-drinking-age adults which alcoholic beverage they’d be consuming or serving during Independence Day. Beer was the answer for 75 percent of the respondents.
That’s good news for breweries as an important summer selling season gets underway, and as the beer category continues to lose so-called “share of throat” to wine and spirits and works to stem ongoing volume declines. Through the first four months of the year, U.S. beer companies have shipped nearly 439,000 fewer barrels of beer compared to 2018, according to the BI, citing unofficial estimates of domestic tax paid shipments by the Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau (TTB).
The Fourth of July holiday, along with Labor Day, are typically the two largest beer selling occasions each year. In 2018, the July 4 holiday week accounted for nearly 3 percent of beer dollar sales — with nearly $800 million in sales — making it the largest beer selling week of the year, according to market research

India: AB InBev sets aside USD55 mln for tax liabilities
|
Anheuser-Busch InBev, the world’s largest brewer, revealed in a filing with the Hong Kong exchange that it has accounted about $55 million or Rs 380 crore as liability in its books, though it has challenged Indian tax authorities that accused the American firm of avoiding taxes, the Economic Times reported on July 3.
In 2016, AB InBev acquired SABMiller for over $100 billion to create the world’s largest beer company, which in turn generated two legacy issues for them in India. For one, the Indian tax authority issued a demand notice for alleged capital gains tax liability last year on SABMiller’s 2006 acquisition of Foster's India business, trademarks and other intellectual properties.
While SABMiller had renamed royalty transactions as management services, the Authority of Advance Rulings, that examines cases of income tax liability involving non-residents in India, said the services qualify as technical know-how and should be taxable under Indian law.
“The company is challenging the tax demand on a number of grounds. The potential amount of potential liability is $55 million, which has been fully provided by the group's financial statements,” said Budweiser Brewing Company APAC in its prospectus for the Hong Kong initial public offering.

South Korea: Liquor companies brewing trying to expand overseas

South Korea’s liquor companies are brewing for global markets, shipping to a growing number of regions across the world and opening pop-up stores to target local consumers, industry officials said on July 4.
Hite Jinro held a series of promotional events earlier this year in Europe to introduce Korean alcohols and offer engaging experiences to customers.
It opened pop-up stores called Corea Spirit 2019 in Paris and A Midsummer Night's Jinro in London in May.
More than 500 people visited each of the pop-up stores, showing high interest in Korea's drinking culture and alcohol beverages, according to the company.
"Since 2016, we've been putting a lot of effort into globalizing soju. We will prepare more opportunities to experience Korean liquor culture and strengthen overseas markets," a Hite Jinro official said.
Regarding the pop-up store marketing strategy, the official said, "We thought opening a pop-up store would be a great idea to promote our products, ranging from beer to fruit-flavored soju, and offer tasting events to enhance our brand awareness."
In 2018, Hite Jinro's overseas sales stood at 97 billion won, up 3 percent from the year before. Meanwhile, it exported soju worth $53.84 million last year, up 12.5 percent from 2017.

UK: Heineken planning sale of 150 pubs across the UK
|
Heineken is planning to sell around 150 pubs across the UK, the HeraldScotland reported on July 3.
It was reported the value of the package would be around £60 million and many premises are Punch pubs.
The brewer sparked concern when it bought nearly 2,000 Punch Taverns two years ago, prompting a competition probe before approval of that £300m deal.
The group said then it would sell pubs in around 30 areas around the UK to ease concerns the merger could lead to reduced competition and consumer choice in some places.
Heineken UK said it is unable to provide locations of the planned sales at this stage.
However, a spokesman for its Star Pubs and Bars said: "We are in the process of marketing a small number of pubs for sale.
"We have consistently said that we regularly review our estate, and with the growth of any pub estate there is also ongoing optimisation which includes some disposals."
Ben Wilkinson, Campaing for Real Ale (CAMRA) national director, said: "Having decided to dispose of these pubs, we welcome Heineken's responsible decision to market them as going concerns and seek a different pub operator to take them on.

France: Winter barley production expected 3.5% below the average of the past five years
|
France is forecast to harvest 3.8 million tonnes of winter rapeseed this year, down 22% from 2018, the farm ministry said on July 2, confirming widespread expectations of a plunge in production following adverse growing weather. The ministry's initial outlook for rapeseed production was more than 25% below the average of the past five years, it said in a crop report.
It was based on a forecast yield of 2.94 tonnes per hectare (t/ha), down from 3.06 t/ha last year and the lowest since 2007, along with an area of 1.31 million hectares, down from 1.61 million in 2018. Rapeseed production in France is made up almost entirely of winter crop, with the ministry estimating that just 2,000 hectares of spring rapeseed were sown this year.
A sharp fall in rapeseed production in France and elsewhere in western Europe has been widely anticipated after drought reduced the sown area, with analysts forecasting the smallest EU harvest in over a decade. "With the exception of Normandy the crop situation is very poor," the farm ministry said of rapeseed.

Canada: Barley prices buoyed by weather threat both locally and abroad
|
Canadian feed barley prices are being buoyed by a triple threat of weather circumstances both locally and abroad, the Western Producer reported on July 5.
Three years of dry growing conditions in Australia have tightened global feed barley supplies to the point that domestic Canadian prices have increased. Current feed barley bids are topping out at C$6.25 per bushel in Alberta, according to Prairie Ag Hotwire data.
“When you look at the entire world for barley exports, the only appreciable increase in production has been in Canada and Kazakhstan,” explained Geoff Backman, manager of Business Development and Markets for Alberta Barley.
“So we’re seeing feed markets increase the price of barley to ration that demand,” he said.
Backman noted that recently, in Alberta, feed barley prices are approximately equivalent to that of malting barley, and sometimes better.
Prolonged dryness across the Canadian Prairies also buoyed feed grain prices, as pastureland carrying capacity has suffered to the point that producers are seeking alternative feed sources. Though slightly alleviated by recent rains, a July 4 report from Saskatchewan Agriculture emphasized more rain is required for crop and pastureland to thrive.
Typically, said Backman, readily available feed corn exports from the United States keep a lid on barley prices.

Hungary: Heineken backs hop growing in Hungary
|
The hop-growing territory around the village of Kastélyosdombó in Somogy County (SW Hungary) is to increase by 20 hectares thanks to financial support of HUF100 million from the Ministry of Agriculture, in cooperation with Heineken Hungária Breweries, the Budapest Business Journal reported on July 3.
Via a joint program with Hungarian Interchurch Aid (HIA-Hungary), Heineken Hungária will look to support disadvantaged families around Kastélyosdombó (253 km southwest of the capital), the company said.
According to Minister of Agriculture István Nagy, producers may take out a HUF6 million non-repayable loan per hectare, which will be used to build up the necessary infrastructure. The aim is to further increase the amount of land given over to hop cultivation.
“It is a question of national strategy to decrease the Hungarian food industry’s dependence on imports and to help agriculture stand on several feet,” Nagy said at an event in Sopron, northwest Hungary, where one of Heinekenʼs two Hungarian sites is located.
