USA: Beer consumption is shrinking but craft beer still rules
|
In 1873 there were 4,131 breweries in the U.S. Over the next century the number fell and fell, hitting a low—not counting Prohibition, when it went to zero—of only 89 in 1978. It wasn’t that Americans had stopped drinking beer; overall consumption was higher than ever. But the business was following the path of so many others in the Industrial Age, consolidating and squeezing ever more out of each manufacturing facility, Bloomberg reported on June 17.
Then in the 1980s, something not so typical happened. Craft breweries started opening, eventually by the thousands. Last year there were 7,450 breweries in the U.S., according to the Brewers Association, a craft-beer trade group. Brewery tallies from the Department of the Treasury and the Bureau of Labor Statistics are lower but show a similar growth trajectory, and the BLS estimates brewery employment has more than tripled since 2010, to 80,774 as of December.
Beer consumption, reports beverage data analyst IWSR, fell in the U.S. in 2018 for the second year in a row after several years of virtually unchanged sales. This might mean the brewery boom is destined to stall, but a boom amid falling sales could also be a sign of something more interesting.

Canada: Barley supply down 4% from 2017-18
|
For 2018-19, the supply of barley in Canada fell by 4% from 2017-18 to 9.7 million tonnes, Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada reported on June 14.
Exports are forecast to increase by 5% to almost 3.0 mln tonnes.
Total domestic barley use is expected to decrease mainly on lower feed use, waste and dockage (FWD).
Carry-out stocks are forecast to drop by 28% to 0.9 mln tonnes, which is 44% lower than the past five year average.
World barley production for 2018-19 is estimated at the lowest level in six years, according to USDA. Carry-out stocks will be historically low, including a steep decline in major exporters. Due to lower imports by China and Saudi Arabia, world trade is expected to decrease. Amid tight supplies, world prices for feed barley have been very strong, compared to corn prices. Combined with abundant supplies of corn worldwide, corn has been used as an alternative crop for feed barley in some countries. As a result of lower supplies and strong demand, the feed barley price at Lethbridge is forecast at C$255/t, about 12% higher than last year. The average Prairie malting barley price is 17-24% higher than last year.

USA, IA: Marto Brewing Company to hold grand opening on June 20
|
Downtown Sioux City's newest brewery, Marto Brewing Company plans to open on June 20th, fulfilling a nearly 5-year-long dream, the Siouxland News reported on June 15.
The restaurant will feature a wood-fired stove, which will cook pizza, wings, oysters and ribs, all made in house.
"This has been a very long process to open this location. Spent a while trying to get the correct location for what we had a vision of," said Owner Erik Martin.
Brewer, Rod Wellman agreed saying, "I think that Sioux City is ready for a place like this where we'll combine high quality craft beer, a lot of different varieties for people to choose from, as well as an excellent menu that Chef Nick is putting together. It's going to be a very unique experience."
While the brewery will open on June 20, its house-brewed beers won't be ready until mid-July. They say until then, they'll have a selection of "guest" beers on tap.

USA, IL: Forgottonia Brewing officially opens on June 12
|
Forgottonia Brewing, the first craft brewery in Macomb, has launched its business with a series of soft openings during the past week, officially opening Wednesday, June 12.
The 2018 Downtown Macomb Retail Competition winners developed their winning pitch with help from the Illinois Small Business Development Center (IL SBDC) at Western Illinois University (WIU). Forgottonia Brewing won the grand prize, offering incentives totaling over $28,000.
"The SBDC, and the competition, really kicked off our publicity and gave us validity," said Sean West, Forgottonia's brewer. "We've had a huge following waiting for us to open ever since."
The brewery is located near Macomb's Amtrak station, bringing new life to the northern edge of the downtown area. West added, "The location was chosen to facilitate a connection between the town and the school."
A webmaster at WIU, West connected with the Forgottonia founders through Macomb's Homebrew Club, a product-testing group which has provided direction for their menu of six seasonally-rotating beer styles on tap. The brewers will offer light and dark varieties, hoppy, Belgian, a sour and one experimental beer.

USA, NC: Free Range Brewing to open second location in Charlottte
|
A big redevelopment of former factories and warehouses off of Statesville Avenue in Charlotte will soon be home to a brewery, the Charlotte Observer reported on June 14.
Free Range Brewing plans to open a second location at Camp North End this summer, project developer ATCO Properties & Management announced. The brewery, which has its flagship location on North Davidson Street, will serve its locally-sourced, small batch beers in a 1,544-square-foot taproom.
Camp North End is part of a trend across the city known as adaptive reuse, or refurbishing an old building for a new purpose or tenant.
According to a press release from ATCO, Camp North End is one of the largest adaptive reuse projects underway in the country. Ford Model Ts and missiles were once manufactured on the 75-acre site.
The development is already home to tenants like Junior Achievement of Central Carolinas, Goodyear Arts, co-working company Hygge, and art galleries and studios. Ally Bank recently opened an “innovation studio” there, which it will expand into a vintage trailer on the site, according to the release.

USA, PA: Koehler Brewery already open in Elwood City
|
Koehler Brewery on Wampum Avenue officially opened last month in the former Dom’s Market location, bringing craft beers and a different food truck experience each night to Ellwood City, The Times reported on June 14.
Owner Bruce Koehler of Evans City, who also has a brewery in Grove City, said the bar offers his two bottled beers, Amber Ale, with a more bold flavor, and Premiere Lager, which is lighter in taste. Both are also sold by the case.
Head brewer Adam Crabtree said they have eight different craft beers on tap, and they will find what people like and if it is very popular they will bottle it.
“People are welcome to taste the beers,” he said. “We don’t want anyone to end up with a beer they don’t like.”
Beer by the flask is a very popular option, Crabtree said. Patrons can purchase the flask filled with beer, use it, rinse it out and return it to buy more beer. They also have wines from local wineries.
Koehler said they are having food trucks because he wants to concentrate on their beers and still offer people a different food selection each night, including Mexican, pierogies, lobster and others. In 2012, the Cousins Maine

USA, IL: Orkenoy to become Humboldt Park’s first brewery by the end of the year
|
Humboldt Park’s first brewery is pegged to open by the end of the year inside a building near the Bloomingdale Trail and Kimball Avenue, the Eater Chicago reported on June 12.
Orkenoy is from a pair of friends who met while working at Lagunitas Brewing’s Douglas Park taproom. The brewery is opening inside the Kimball Arts Center, 1757 N. Kimball Avenue. The 606 elevated trail overlooks the building near the Kimball Avenue exit.
The bar will have 12 taps, spirits and wine, plus a full kitchen for food. Jonny Ifergan and Ryan Sanders, two beer industry vets — Ifergan works at Whiner Beer and Sanders works inside Lagunitas’s kitchen — have partnered on the project. Ifergan’s brother Tohm Ifergan will also open a coffeeshop inside the space. He debuted Dayglow Coffee in 2017 in Silver Lake, California. Tohm Ifergan will open his second Dayglow inside his brother’s brewery.
Jonny Ifergan confessed that he prefers malt over hops, despite the trendy IPAs that dominate craft beer culture. Ifergan said he wants to “make malt sexy again.” He’s inspired the beers of Norway and other Scandinavian influences. The brewery’s name dates back to the early 17th Century. It’s the name of a Scandinavian ship.

USA, WA: Fish Brewing Co unable to pay its debts
|
Olympia’s Fish Brewing Co, a business that got its start in Olympia 26 years ago, is in financial trouble, according to Thurston County Superior Court records.
They show the business at 515 Jefferson St. SE owes creditors more than $4.8 million, but only has assets of $2.6 million. Fish Tale Brew Pub, which is part of Fish Brewing, operates across the street from the brewery.
“Fish Brewing is unable to pay its debts as they become due,” court documents read.
The petition to appoint a receiver was filed May 22. The result is a Kirkland-based business called McCallen & Sons is now in control of Fish Brewing’s assets.
“The receiver shall have exclusive possession and control over the debtor (Fish Brewing Co.) and its assets, with the power and authority to preserve, protect and liquidate those assets and to distribute the proceeds thereof to the party or parties legally entitled to them,” the documents read.
The court filings show a long list of creditors, including South Sound Bank of Olympia, which has since been acquired by Timberland Bank of Hoquiam. South Sound Bank was owed $1.3 million.

USA, MD: DuClaw Brewing closes down
|
Thursday June 13 was the last day for DuClaw Brewing at Arundel Mills, Baltimore, the Fox Baltimore reports.
The brewery-restaurant announced on Facebook that "unfortunately, the Mall is no longer a place we can call home. For a variety of circumstances, most outside of our control, this will be our last week."
The restaurant noted that many of the staff have "already found new jobs, and some are taking time to reflect. We'll keep our Facebook page updated, and those that want to share where they are going will be posted here. Again, thanks to all who have shared their time with us, we are grateful to you all."

Hong Kong: AB InBev’s Asia Pacific unit to start gauging investor demand for Hong Kong IPO
|
Budweiser Brewing Company APAC Ltd., the Asia Pacific unit of the world’s biggest brewer, starts gauging investor demand on June 28 for a proposed Hong Kong initial public offering, Bloomberg reported on June 17.
The arm of Anheuser-Busch InBev SA tentatively plans to meet investors through June 28, according to terms for the deal obtained by Bloomberg. The offering could raise at least $5 billion, people familiar with the matter have said.
At $5 billion, the share sale would be the city’s second biggest this year if Alibaba Group Holding Ltd. goes ahead with its Hong Kong listing that could raise as much as $20 billion. The Chinese e-commerce giant filed confidentially with the city’s exchange to sell shares, Bloomberg News reported last week.
Budweiser plans to use all the proceeds from the Hong Kong offering to repay debt in Korea in full and a shareholder loan to AB InBev partially, the terms show.
Morgan Stanley and JPMorgan Chase & Co. are joint sponsors for the offering, according to a preliminary prospectus filed to the Hong Kong stock exchange.

Thailand: ThaiBev shares seen as one of top picks among Singapore-listed consumer stocks
|
CGS-CIMB Research says Thai Beverage is one of its top picks among Singapore-listed consumer stocks, given the kingdom’s improving domestic beer consumption, The Edge Singapore reported on June14.
CGS-CIMB also favours ThaiBev due to the strength in the Thai baht and also its valuation gap to other Thai-listed peers.
“We expect the share price to perform well when results deliver,” says CGS-CIMB which is maintaining ThaiBev at “buy”.
In April, domestic beer consumption was up 21% y-o-y, reversing from the slow demand growth in March, according to Thailand’s Office of Industrial Economics.
Although the inclusion of Sabeco and exports could have distorted ThaiBev’s y-o-y numbers, CGS-CIMB says - on a 7-month basis from Oct 2018 to April – the kingdom’s beer consumption has grown 9% y-o-y.
“We believe ThaiBev will grow in tandem, given that it is the second-largest beer player in the market with an approximate 40% market share,” says analyst Juliana Cai in a report published on June 13.
Meanwhile, Thailand retail sales were up 12% y-o-y in the last two quarters while farm income was stable.

Malawi: Higher taxes on alcohol may force Castel Malawi to shut down operations
|
Castel Malawi Limited has disclosed that it could close its operations in the country due to high taxes charged by Malawi Revenue Authority (MRA) on alcoholic beverages, the Malawi24 reported on June 18.
According to a memo signed by Castel Malawi Limited Managing Director Herve Milhade, MRA is now to be getting 90 percent on production cost as tax.
Milhade said the excise tax charged by MRA is to affect the performance, cash flow and survival of the company.
The Castel boss also disclosed to have been unsuccessful in a meeting with MRA officials to revise the tax that has been charged to the company.
He added that MRA on June 17 “garnisheed” Castel Malawi Limited’s accounts.
“These actions by MRA mean that Castel Malawi LTD is at risk of closure and withdrawal of Castel Groupe from the country due to unrealistic and unaffordable excise calculations,” reads part of the memo.
The Castel boss however assured employees that the company will put in every effort to turn things around and save their jobs.
French Groupe Castel bought the brewery from Danish company Carlsberg in 2016. Carlsberg was established in Malawi in 1968.

Myanmar: Myanmar to allow import of foreign alcohol
|
Myanmar’s Ministry of Commerce has drafted regulations that would allow the import of foreign alcohol, a senior official says, and in the process overturn a decades-old ban that has encouraged rampant smuggling, the Frontier Myanmar reported on June 18.
The rules have come out of a review that the President’s Office initiated earlier this year at a meeting of the National Economic Coordination Committee, said U Khin Maung Lwin, an assistant secretary in the office of the minister for commerce.
The Ministry of Commerce was put in charge of the review and has formed a committee led by the deputy minister that also includes the permanent secretaries of other ministries.
The committee is examining not only the import but also the manufacture and distribution of alcohol, as well as excise rules, said Khin Maung Lwin.
“Our ministry has drafted rules outlining the procedure for foreign liquor imports. The committee is reviewing the rules in cooperation with other ministries. [Imports] will be allowed once consultation with the ministries has been completed,” he said.
A spokesperson for French distilling giant Pernod Ricard’s Myanmar partnership said the review was “a very positive move” that would be welcomed by the foreign business community.

The amount of Australian barley exported to China every year could fill 4.5 Melbourne Cricket Grounds or 2900 Olympic sized swimming pools, the Grain Central reported on June 17.
It’s Australia’s largest barley market, which is why the Australian barley industry is so committed to maintaining and enhancing the long-term relationship with Chinese brewers, maltsters, processors and traders through continual technical support.
Last week the Australian Export Grains Innovation Centre (AEGIC) and Barley Australia hosted two Australian Barley Technical Conferences in Guangzhou and Beijing, in collaboration with Seed Force, University of Adelaide and Victorian grain grower Simon Tickner.
Three Australian government agencies – DFAT, DAWR and Austrade – provided support.
AEGIC barley markets manager Mary Raynes said the conferences had been run for three years and were highly valued by attendees.
“These events are an effective way to help maintain and enhance the excellent relationship between the Australian barley industry and the Chinese brewing industry in the long term,” she said.
“The response this year was again excellent, with 130 people choosing to take part, including representatives of brewing companies, maltsters, traders and students.”
Ms Raynes said China imported 4.5 million tonnes of Australian barley worth A$1.2 billion on average.

Australia: Western Australia looking at its biggest ever barley planting this year
|
Western Australia is still looking at its biggest ever barley planting this year, according to the Grain Industry Association of WA's (GIWA) latest crop report.
According to the report, the crop area mix had changed little in the past month.
It said the trend to increasing barley has eventuated in most areas, except the north, the canola and lupins area was down, oats for hay were up in traditional hay areas and pasture/fallow area was up.
"The wheat area has continued to be substituted by barley and, due to the late start, country has been left out that was initially to be sown to wheat," the report said.
"Wheat area is likely to be historically low at less than 52 per cent of the total crop area in 2019 and this will be the largest area of barley planted for the State on record at 1.91 million hectares.
"The subtle shift to pasture from the late break, and the increasing profitability of sheep has seen the total predicted area of crop drop to below eight million hectares for the first time in many years."
